I was blown away by the process that the professor developed for his class and how effective it was in creating real businesses. As a successful entrepreneur, I am passionate about idea and business generation, and I actually came out of the class with a new business that I feel confident will be enormously successful. After purchasing and reading his book, I realized the process isn't just a great way for entrepreneurs to identify promising business ideas, but the same process can be used to innovate within an organization. I have since bought the book for the Director of Sales at my business, and he is going to lead an innovation tournament across our organization. I can hardly wait to see the results!

The concepts in this book are not limited to R&D. We used the method to implement cost savings and productivity programs in our company and to define the next big market opportunity. The text has specific examples that illustrate the main points and the website compliments the book nicely. Go Darwinator!

this book was for class, not very helpful or well written.

This book is an overrated disappointment. Although it is good that the authors wrote a book on Innovation Tournaments, they really didn't go through any examples of organizations that are doing this and the challenges and opportunities to making it happen.Innovation Tournaments are not an easy thing to make happen in your organization (as an individual who has done this, I can attest to it.) And, having some organizational case studies on the pros and cons side would have been useful.I guess that it should have been obvious, when they defined innovation as an internally driven process as opposed to a customer driven process. I maintain that any innovation tournament that doesn't include the customer will fail.Instead the authors get caught up in a slick risk adjusted financial analysis tool that they recommend to evaluate new ideas.Too bad - what a disappointment.

This is one of the better recent books on innovation, although it has a slightly misleading title. Yes, authors Christian Terwiesch and Karl T. Ulrich define and discuss innovation tournaments and their possible role in making organizations more successful at innovating. But the title is too limiting; innovation tournaments are really only a portion of what it offers. In addition to being written in an easy, familiar style and being full of examples and illustrations, the book is rich with tips, models and guidelines to help readers navigate all stages of the innovation process. Terwiesch and Ulrich candidly discuss the necessity of failure and the costs of developing innovations, but they're also realistic when they describe the benefits. getAbstract recommends their book to managers who are responsible for evaluating ideas and fostering innovation.

With this meal plan and great, super-nutritious recipes, you will not be hungry. The only problem with this diet is the expense. Carbs, it turns out, are fairly cheap (pasta, potatoes, bread), while vegetables, meat and cheese can be expensive. Every time you turn around, you will be off to the vegetable stand, but it is well worth it. On this diet, you will be well fed and your family, friends, doctor and insurance company will be impressed.

This diet is full of common sense and I have lost weight by following the guidelines. It is easy to follow with lots of veggies, sensible proteins and cutting out processed foods, white flour and sugar.There are some errors in the book though. In the first two week phase, you are supposed to avoid carrots (higher sugar content) yet in the first phase recipe section, the recipe includes carrots.A minor detail to be sure, but still, this is not the only example I've noticed and I am wondering who proofed/approved this and what other errors there may be. (Hey, if you are following something to the letter and the letters are wrong....not good)This is easier to follow than Atkins and allows "good" carbs and fats.This is not so much a "diet" as a way to eat well , enjoy your food and make good choices for life.I am learning to "eat to live" instead of "living to eat" and this is a help.

I did this diet in high school and the beginning of college where I lost over 60 pounds. I never gained it back! I've been stagnant for the past few years and want to lose a few extra pounds, so I'm going back!

After I purchased the South Beach Diet book I lost 25 pounds in 45 days. It surprised me too. My doc asked me if I was starving myself. I told him and another doc that i was just following the book's advice. Mostly eggs and meat to start. Got to get that protein. I also drank Ensure high protein drinks. The book came after two doctors recommended it. I'm way thru the first phase and now I can eat other foods and still eat out. I mostly have given up the bread and baked potatoes.This diet is working for me . Unbelievable.

If you're not careful, you might mistake this for a regular cookbook rather than a diet one. My wife, who is not on a diet, has been enjoying these recipes as well. There's a wonderful variety in here. The recipes are simple and easy to fix. I like how each recipe is clearly marked to indicate the corresponding phase. Some miss the mark, but the majority are right on target. There's a heavy emphasis on flavor.

This is a life changing book have lost 5 lbs in a week not even following the diet just cutting out the foods that he says we need eliminate in the1st Phase like White Bread & Rice, Honey, Sugar ect and eating the good vegetables and lean meat with a little fruit. I will be starting phase 1 assoon as I eat most of the few things I chose not to throw out such as fruit ect that will spoil. I have lost the weight around my waste asstated in the book. I am ready to loose weight and get healthy. I think this is a lifestyle of eating rather than a diet or a change of dietreally. The hardcover arrived today. I can see phase 1 as being a little restrictive but it only lastsTwo Weeks.

This is a very good diet if you have a lot of motivation. I have been fortunate that several people in my family and friend are also on this diet. My husband has already lost 25lbs in a month and I have lost 11lbs.The food is easy to eat maybe a little expensive and hard to find at times but good. I still have more to lose so I plan to stay on the diet for a while. Then there is a final phase to teach you how to eat the rest of your life.

I love this plan! It is more a lifestyle than a diet: it gives tips to change your eating habits for the rest of your life, without feeling hungry that was my big complain with other diets. It is well balanced and I got rid of high cholesterol after 2 months on this diet/exercise plan. I do not longer take cholesterol prescription since more than 3.5 years ago. I bought this book again because I gave my 2 ones as gift to other friends.

I am a psychologist and I treat war veterans, the majority of who are Vietnam Veterans. Yes, older men. Nonetheless, I chose this book for one of my books in a bibliotherapy group I run, taking a chance that they would go running when they saw the angel/butterfly on the cover and a book written by a woman. They LOVED this book and related greatly to the author's struggle with depression, anxiety and suicidal attempts. More importantly, I asked if Mrs. Horbochechski would do a phone conference with the veterans once they completed the book. She did so and the veterans were able to learn even more about how to cope with their own struggle through the author's sharing and her generosity. Her words are so open and beautifully put. Thank you for helping others by what you do.

Lee Horbachewski eloquently described the terror and loneliness that accompanied her on this journey through her own darkness. She speaks with wisdom and love, and having not only survived this experience, she now loving holds her hand out to all of those whose lives have been touched by similar darkness. She beautiful exemplifies the power in asking for and allowing others to help us! She is an inspiration! I highly recommend this book!

Lee Horbachewski spares no words in describing the emotional turmoil she went through. The path this book leads you down touches your heart and soul because it is an issue which directly and/or indirectly effects every person on this planet. The courage Lee shows in writing about her struggles with depression and anxiety and how it nearly cost her, her life is absolutely incredible. She shows unparalleled leadership in writing about her struggles. This story is inspiring for anybody who has been touched by mental illness and it is a must read for anyone trying to understand the issue better.

I have read this book twice now, and both times, have gleaned something more eye-opening from it. The honesty, compassion and depth in which it is written is a gift to anyone going through similar struggles, as well as those who know someone who is. The tools in this book are invaluable - they also help to erase the negative stigma attached to mental illness. This is a must read for anyone and it deserves to be shared with everyone you know. A great piece to have on the bookshelf for anyone who is interested in reading about the Iran-Iraq war. Being the longest conventional war to happen in the 20th century between any two nations, there is a tremendous amount of historical, military, economic, and political details to cover. However, the author does a superb job of weaving all of these details and information together into a relatively easy to read and interesting narrative.

Good book. Very detailed and very thorough. The writing is a bit choppy because English is not his first language.

I wanted a quick overview of this conflict and this book fulfilled that perfectly. It was refreshing to read a book about the middle east seemingly devoid of any bias. I would recommend this book highly.

An interesting book on a subject that does not have a lot of coverage. It's chapter arrangement by actor is sometimes confusing but in the end I saw why the writer used that method rather than a strictly chronological narrative.One error in the book was that it talked about Reagan campaign staffers meeting with Iranians in Paris prior to November 1980 elections. This story has been debunked by many reliable sources.

Dilip Hiros book on the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980's is up to his usual standard; the facts are presented in an impartial and systematic way giving the reader a thorough if somewhat prosaic account of the lengthy and bloody Iran-Iraq War.The Longest War is divided into four phases, each having a chapter that accounts for the action (political and military) in Iran and Iraq and with an accompanying chapter on the role played by outsiders. The book also puts the war into context with regard to Saddams rise, the Shahs fall and the founding of the Islamic Republic in Iran.Saddam, with support from Saudia Arabia and Kuwait, and a nod and a wink from Washington initiated a war he expected to last weeks against an Iran in turmoil after its 1979 revolution. Instead it dragged on for nearly a decade resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands on each side.Hiro dispassionately reports the developments on each side- the Iraqi attempts to extracate themselves once it became clear that it wouldnt be a walkover, the Iranian Islamic Republic, consolidating itself in the face of the attack from Iraq and sticking out for what in world war 2 terms would be called "total surrender". The outside powers roles are also documentated, the then USSR seems to be constantly reacting to events, half the American government supports Iraq at first tentively and then more overtly including supplying Iraq with intelligence, financial credits and the deeply dubious Donald Rumsfield aswell as militarily intervening in the Gulf. The other half of the American government is meanwhile selling Arms to the Iranians to fund their murderous war in Central America. The British, Germans, French, Swedes, Israelis are selling arms willy nilly in pursuit of profit to one side or the other.There are interesting comparisons on how the two countries made war, the Iraqis got into debt with the West and the Gulf States for tens of billions of dollars, in stark contrast the Iranians had a national debt of only $500million at the end of the war. They saw, correctly, that getting into debt would compromise their independence and their Islamic Revolution. To the Iranians credit they never reduced themselves to Saddams level by resorting to Chemical Weapons (the Ayatollah was against it).If a criticism of Hiro writing can be made it is that it will not have you sitting on the edge of your seat. It is calm, matter of fact, thorough and a valuable account of the Iran Iraq war which has tended to be overlooked given the recent turmoil in the region.

In my opinion, the definitive account of the Iran-Iraq War has yet to be written, and in fact probably never will be. The destruction of Iraq (including much state/historical documentation), and the difficulty of interviewing major participants on both sides of the conflict (several are already dead), have made this a near-impossible task.Nevertheless, Dilip Hiro's book provides an excellent source on the conflict. He bases most of his research on newspaper articles, official documents and speeches, and his own extensive war reporting. His account therefore relates an insider's view of the war, written by someone who witnessed the course of events on the ground. The book is organized on a chronological basis, offering first a reflection on the causes of the war before moving on to a detailed recounting of events, and ends with a final chapter of personal conclusions. Hiro does not hesitate to supplement his historical narrative with personal analysis. He does a good job of backing up his interpretations by using statistics, charts, economic data, etc. The maps he provides are adequate but by no means exceptional. There is also a section of approximately thirty photographs; however their print quality is extremely poor and diminishes their analytical value.The author attempts to remain neutral in his work, and generally tries to base his investigation on facts. The war is clearly portrayed as having been triggered by Iraq, with the tacit support of the US and its allies in the Gulf. Hiro makes it clear that this constituted an attempt to smother the Iranian Revolution, and that it ended up seriously backfiring. Instead of inspiring the Iranians to oust Khomeini, the war had the opposite effect and united the population in support of his new regime. Saddam also seriously underestimated the manner in which the Iraqi Shia population would react to the war - a mistake which nearly ruined him, and partially explains his resort to chemical weapons. Two chapters are devoted to Iraqi and Iranian perspectives, detailing the political, social and military aspects of the war in each country.This work also vividly illustrates the scope of foreign meddling and interference in the war. The author produces a very thorough assessment of the conflict in an international context. Iraq reprized the role previously held by Iran in America's network of client states in the region (this lasted until the first Gulf War). Iran was systematically hampered in achieving its objectives due to its very low prestige on the international scene (its main trading partner was West Germany). The Soviets - who had originally planned to ally with both Iraq and Iran to stabilize the Afghan situation - were increasingly worried about US intervention, and gradually adopted a policy of containment towards the Iranian Revolution. All these points are elaborately discussed in the book.Moreover, Hiro does an excellent job of emphasizing the central importance of oil and weapons sales. Attacks against tankers (the 'Tanker War') in the Persian Gulf are well-documented, as are the nepotism and corruption of western governments. Unfortunately, the famous photo of Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam in December 1983 is not included. I was also slightly disappointed by the rather cursory explanation of the Iran-Contra Affair. Apart from these minor drawbacks, the book is generally impartial and does enough to serve its purpose.In conclusion, I would strongly recommend this work to those who are interested in the Iran-Iraq War. It offers the best general survey of the conflict I have come across. If you wish to concentrate on military matters, then Efraim Karsh's book is probably better. Both works should be complemented by articles from academic journals for further in-depth analysis.

I had no idea how rich the Osage really were, and I certainly didn't have a clue that the government didn't trust them with all that money. I should not have been so naive. It had to madden many whites that, although they'd shoved the Osage onto a piece of land they deemed unfit for themselves, oil would be discovered and the Osage would turn out to be the wealthiest people in the world. The one way they had of trying to horn in on this wealth was by declaring that the Osage were not fit to use their own money wisely. In many cases whites were put in charge of the families' money, and they gave their wards allowances (and themselves large fees for their business knowledge).Why on earth should I be so surprised that this greed would escalate to murder? It is the natural progression after all. To this day, the Osage have trust issues, and who can blame them? They tried to get dozens of murders investigated, but instead the killings were covered up. What Grann did in Killers of the Flower Moon was to dig deeper and deeper and expose just how huge the problem actually was. As I read, words like horrifying, unspeakable, and several others flashed through my mind. This is an uncomfortable read for anyone with a conscience; nevertheless, it is a fascinating and important one.(Review copy courtesy of NetGalley)

This is one of the best true crime historical accounts I've ever read. From start to finish it is compelling reading that didn't let me put the book down. A darkly fascinating subject well rendered.

This is one of the most heartbreaking and terrifying books I have ever read. I hope that it becomes a staple of reading lists for American history classes. It is an incredibly well told story of a staggering real world evil in an America only two or three generations removed from our own. You should read it. It won't take long - it is, though it feels crass to say so, a genuine page-turner. And I at least will likely wrestle with it for a long while. Man o man.

Since the 17th century, the Osage tribe claimed land from Missouri west to the Rockies. With the Louisiana Purchase, the tribe was forced to cede land to accommodate the flood of western expansion. In Chronicle One of Grann's book, the history of the tribe is laid out. By the 1870's, what remained of the Osage tribe settled in NE Oklahoma because their chief deemed the land too hilly for white settlers to want to file claims there. The tribe negotiated with the Department of the Interior that any reservation land used for oil drilling or mining, had to be leased from the tribe and that the full blooded Osage would share in any profits from these natural resources. Logs where kept of Osage tribe members and indeed, when oil gushed from leased reservation land, head rights were claimed. The Osage tribe were among the wealthiest people in the country. Starting in 1921, Osage tribal members began to die. Some were shot in the head while others suffered from a mysterious "wasting" disease. Many suspected murder and lived in fear of who might be next.Chronicle Two describes in detail the role of the Bureau of Investigation (the early FBI) to unravel the murders during what became known as "the Reign of Terror." The Bureau was formed under Teddy Roosevelt in 1909. By 1924, J. Edger Hoover became head of the Bureau. He wanted to highlight the expertise of the Bureau by solving the Osage murders. He hired a former Texas Ranger, Tom White, to lead the investigation. The reader discovers clues along with White as he methodically collects evidence and interrogates witnesses and suspects . This is the most exciting part of the book. Many, but not all of the culprits are brought to justice.How are the Osage doing now? This is the gist of Chronicle Three and it is, unfortunately, the weakest part of the story. Grann checks in with the descendants of some of the murdered Osage. Their sense of unease and lack of justice is palpable. The oil has dried up and the tribal population has diminished. Some press Grann to help them bring closure to the holes in their family histories. But the ancestors are in their graves along with the murderers and the paper trail is weak or inconclusive. As Grann runs out of answers, this reader ran out of interest. It is a compelling and important story up to this point. Now that wind turbines dot the prairie of the Osage reservation, their future seems as bleak as their past and the lack of justice seems as limited as their future. Despite Grann's extensive notes and lists of resources, the reader is left, like the Osage themselves, with more questions than answers.

I loved Grann's The Lost City of Z so I was eager to try this. Unfortunately, it was drab in its telling. I’m glad I’ve finished it, though. It’s a fascinating & important story, that shows the appalling extent of exploitation that Native Americans endured.The first three quarters of the book are spent in minute details. That was interesting, but too long. That case had little to do with the birth of the FBI, other than it was one of their first (if not the first) investigation and coincided with the rise to power of J Edgar Hoover. The final quarter rushes through the implications and unsolved mysteries of the murders, then the book abruptly ends.In short, far too much detail about one case, then not enough detail about what it all meant and the larger picture.Not terrible, but unlike The Lost City of Z, not great.Larry Nocellaauthor of Razor Wire Karma: a novel, available on Amazon
