I ordered the book for research as part of a restoration project involving an early model Bell helicopter. I found photos and text that was useful.
Bought the book as a gift for a friend, he loved it I haven't read it yet as it was a Christmas present!
Spenser's _Whirlybirds_ describes the evolution and development of the helicopter. Although Leonardo Da Vinci's notes and several European refinements are discussed, the book primarily concentrates on the efforts of four Americans: Igor Sikorsky, Frank Piasecki, Arthur Young, and Stanley Hiller.Sikorsky, an immigrant from the Ukraine, is occasionally credited with inventing the helicopter. Although he did not invent the helicopter, he made many refinements. Sikorsky is still the first name in helicopters today.Piasecki built a small helicopter at a young age. His company eventually became Boeing Vertol.Young also got started with helicopters early in life. The company that he founded became Bell Helicopters, later Bell Helicopter Textron.Hiller was unique among the four helicopter pioneers in that he started out in California, not on the east coast. He was somewhat isolated from the centers of early helicopter development. Hiller Aircraft exists today as a manufacturer of light helicopters.Helicopters proved to be invaluable for the military, and served in wars from Korea onwards. Much of the onward development of these machines depended on continued military support. A number of commercial uses were developed too: crop spraying, aerial surveys and photography, air ambulances, etc.Although Piasecki and Hiller developed small helicopters for personal use (like an automobile), they proved to be unaffordable for the vast majority of people. Helicopter "airlines" flourished (with Federal subsidies) in the 1960's, but fizzeled out about 10 years later due to high costs and accidents._Whirlybirds_ is long (almost 500 pages), but is well-written and easy to read. (It is helpful to have a nodding familiarity with aviation vocabulary such as "roll", "pitch", "yaw", etc.) I recommend this book for anyone interested in helicopters or aviation history.
This is a masterpiece on the four US helicopter pioneers -- Sikorsky, Bell (Arthur Young), Piasecki, and Stanley Hiller. Only faults to the book are (1) that it primarily focuses on the pioneers (hence the title), not the machines, and (2) he has nothing at all good to say about Hughes helicopters. In fact, it's pretty well damning. I think it should've been a little more objective. Also doesn't cover Charlie Kaman, who was also one of the early pioneers and still active today.
Whirlybirds is very well written account of the early history of the helicopter, and its pioneers. Filling a long needed gap in aviation history, this book tells how four men looked into the future of vertical flight, and turned it into a reality. This book is a must have. Jay Hendrickson

As with the first two installments in this series, I finished this quickly -- the reading level is clearly aimed at late-elementary and tween readers. It somehow managed to offer even more action than the prior volumes, though I'm grateful for the moments that allowed me a breather. It picked up immediately from Book 2's ominous cliffhanger; but here, instead of a PokemonGo take, the focus was robots -- not just giants, but sizes ranging down to that of insects.Speaking of which, I appreciated how a newcomer brought in a presence that nearly reminded me of BB-8 from "Star Wars." Not only that, it was refreshing for me to see another introduction break the, shall we say, boy-centric tone of the series. One instance of raw, lonely despair was unexpected -- I'd almost deem it a bit risky for kid-oriented literature. Yet I welcomed it because it injected a dose of realism to all the sci-fi/fantasy goings-on.
The ONLY negative thing I can say about this series is that there isn't a number 4 yet! My boys (9,7,& 5) and I flew through these and we all really loved them. Please keep them coming Dustin!!
My son absolutely loves these books!!! He's actually a pretty good reader to the point where he was getting bored. Concerned he'd get out of practice, I found these books before Christmas and he's now on the fourth book in just a month( and re-read books one and two twice before getting three and four for his birthday Jan19)! We're already eagerly awaiting book five. It's so great to find a children's chapter book that captivates what so many kids are passionate about.
I had given Book 1 to my grandson for his 9th birthday. It became his favorite book. For Christmas he asked for the remaining books in the series. He loves playing Minecraft and Roblox so this was perfect for him.
I bought 3 of the Trapped in a Video game for my grandson. He loves video games and I am hoping he also will love to read and maybe will happen since they are all about his favorite thing to do. Fingers crossed. He liked them
My son loved when I read this series aloud to him. It's very creative. The words create vivid pictures in both of our minds.

This book is a must if you are into Russian history - it tells the story of the Romanovs, since the first one to the fall of the dinasty. It is definitely some heavy reading in some parts - you have to think that you cannot understand Russia without, at the same time, knowing something of what was happening in Europe and the Middle East. But in general, the prose if fluid, full of details yet not overwhelmingly technical or for the scholar.
For those who like their history both interesting and readable, this is your book. This author writes in a very journalistic, or even novel-like, style, and it's easy to forget as you're reading that this is more than a "story." The book moves along very quickly, and you'll find it is very much of the "don't want to put it down" variety. I was pleased that it was available in e-book/Kindle format, as one can read along, and quickly look up unfamiliar historical references, or just investigate parts of the story that are interesting. As for the subject matter, the book truly is a riveting story of the various luminary members of the dynasty, and their greater place within the times they lived and ruled. The author helpfully provides a family tree, and brief single line identifier of the major characters during various periods, so that readers can keep track of the many players, some of whom were around for a very long time. If you're a Game of Thrones fan, the story line will seem quite familiar in some places, with the difference being, of course, these events really happened!
Fascinating story. The geneology gets a bit complex at times, but it certainly helps explain the Russian mindset that led them back to what is essentially an autocracy under Putin. It was interesting to learn that the first tsar of the Romanov dynasty was very reluctant to accept the mantle of leadership when it was offered. While the dynasty ended in blood and tragedy, it was also born during a period of blood and tragedy. Apart from Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and Alexander II, there was little to distinguish the other Romanov tsars in terms of improving the lot of their subjects during their respective reigns. While the story of Nicholas II and Alexandra and the end of the dynasty has been told by many other authors, I didn't realize until I read this book how much Nicholas contributed to his own demise and that of his family by the decisions he made during his time as tsar. Probably wouldn'lt have changed the course of history, but it might have saved his life and that of his immediate and extended family.
Human history is full of violence and ineptitude. Nothing makes that more clear than Mr Montefiore's examination of the Romanov dynasty. This is a well-researched, well-documented, and well-written volume that is essential to anyone interested in reading European history. You will be amazed, astounded and disgusted (sorry, but there is no getting around it) by the machinations of the Romanov royal family. It is only surpassed by the brutality of the revolutionaries who put an end to the dynasty, murdering Tsar Nicolas and his immediate family, as well as other family members whose only threat was Lenin's own insecurity. You will recognize some names that are still in Russian government today. I will say only that if evil were genetic, there would be little hope for the Russian people. The lesson is simply that you may change a style of government, but if you don't change the mindsets of the people governing, the result will not be better. This is a lesson for all nations. You must read this book if you hope to understand modern Russia.
Most of the book reveals how scientists confirmed the remains of the Romanovs through DNA etc. The author has definitely done a lot of research on the subject but he gets into a lot of technicalities that seem to drag on. The last third of the book deals with the different imposters particularly the most controversial Anna Anderson who was eventually proven an imposter. The discussion of her only remaining tissue samples and the court proceedings go on too long. For his research Massie gets five stars, for losing the reader's interest along the way, I give this book another five stars.
As a master in his chosen field, and a natural orator, thinker, philosopher SSM was born for this line of work and I'm grateful he's channeled his gifts to help make a less nonsensical world through the power of fascinating historical details so skillfully woven and presented. Knowledge is life, and now is a time to learn and listen and heed! After Lytton Strachey SSM is our latest next best and all I want is more. Thank you Simon!
Wonderfully written. I had read Peter the Great and Katherine the Great. This book covered all the Romanov generations in order and really increased my knowledge of the whole family. Just a great book and factually supported very well.
I found Romanovs to be a very intriguing and enlightening read. As my heritage (on my paternal grandfather's side) is Russian, I found the book extremely interesting, and I learned a history of this dynasty that I know I never would have learned otherwise. Knowing how atheistically communistic the U.S.S.R. and Russia have always been portrayed, I found it unusually interesting that the Romanov families appeared to be quite religious, even to the point of being Christian. That is a part of their history of which I was never aware. I feel the author did an excellent job of explaining in great detail all the events happening in this entire family right up to the deaths of the final family members in 1918. The asterisked footnotes were extremely helpful in filling in a lot of the gaps regarding various events and characters who played major roles in the Romanov family history. It was very obvious that the author did a great deal of historical research in putting this book together. For anyone who is interested in this kind of history, I would highly recommend this book, for I don't feel anyone could go wrong in adding this historical account to his or her library.

Super book. 90% of tech-related books "for beginners" either 1) assume somewhere around Chapter 3 that you have acquired prior information from whatever secret club such information is actually acquired or 2) treat you like someone who is incapable of understanding the really sophisticated stuff. This is one of the exceptions: It takes you every step along the way from absolute basics that any person who understands how to use gmail and has ever had to figure out their IP address (without fully understanding what that is) will get to all the things you've wanted to know, like how exactly do I get data from a website, and what the hell is "SSH"? Only drawback: the illustrations are utterly and completely useless.

Some have complained that this text does not include many of the finer details of networking. To those, I would argue that's not the point of this book.I have the paperback. I have read portions of this in pdf format. Both are great. The illustrations are simple, but effective.If you have next to no knowledge of networking, having this book under your belt (should not take you longer than a week or so to read through, at a leisurely pace), reading through this will ensure your acquaintance with the various concept which you will later delve into further with other networking textbooks, which can often be dry and dull. The author does a marvelous job of keeping the various concepts fresh in your head so you can tie them all together. To get lost in the details so early in the game could be counterproductive to your integration of these concepts.
The book is concise, and provides enough context, history, and examples to make it very easy to understand the problems that early network engineers were trying to solve. Highly recommend this book as an entry point for learning how network infrastructure works.
He's simply a good communicator, has a knack for explaining it at the TRUE starting point and taking it in steps that are easy to understand. This book doesn't come close to getting you certivied as a network engineer, but is a very good introduction for people who don't know the basic building blocks and design concepts of networks.

How am I supposed to read 3 chapters in a timely manner when I have to look up every other word?There isn't any evolve resources for this book, frustrating when students have a hard time summarizing the information and deciding what is importantBlack and white everything- makes it very hard to pick up the book and find something quickly.Topics within the chapters are organized in a way that doesn't flow and makes learning harder.No index.To top it off my professor for this class wasn't the greatest. Added to the hatred of this textbook to be honest. BUT I really think this book wasn't made for an undergrad maternity class, the information was much too in-depth and the textbook assumed that the student was already knowledgeable on the subject.Would not recommend.
