Do NOT buy this!!If you are looking for 9 year old code, then fine. But if you were expecting an up to date publication based most recent relevant code (specifically 2015 editions of IRC/IBC etc..) look elsewhere.The description given for this item on Amazon is VERY deceptive. It does not clearly indicate which publications of code this book is based on. Let me remedy that.The chapters of this is book are as follows:-Building (based on 2009 IRC)-Plumbing (based on 2009 IRC, 2009 UFC and scattered pieces of NFPA up to 2011)-Mechanical (based on 2009 IRC, 2009 UMC and scattered pieces of NFPA up to 2011)-Electrical (based on 2009 IRC and 2011 NECIf i had know I would not have ordered, in hindsight I should have read the reviews better. Am reporting this to Amazon for incorrect product information which also covers "creative" product descriptions.
Contains All Relevant Residential Building Codes for in the field actual construction, even includes simplified span tables for rafter, ceiling, floor joists.  Egress widow requirements, Gives header sizes for window and door openings. EVERYTHING for passing a residential building inspection without problems.... You build with this book and your golden. The Book's Very well laid out, easy to find the info your looking for , sorted by, HVSC, BUILDING, PLUMBING, ELECTRICAL. I downloaded and referenced all the residential codes, but so many pages, too clunky, too much info.  This simplified version is what i built my house by and was all that was needed to stay compliant and pass every building inspection the first time without trouble.  I cant say enough good things about this book! Every Builder, Tradesman, Contractor, Plumber, Hvac, should have a copy of this book. And every Home Owner having work done should keep a copy to keep their Contractors in check!
This is my third. It's real value is to make sure the job is done to industry standards, not to simply conform to codes. Afterall, the codes are written for our safety, after a history of improvements. In my county, I don't even have inspectors, but still refer to my code book to get the job done in the best way. Just met a client, and she was seriously hurt falling to concrete because no railing - a code violation to be sure, but she could have lost her life. I was a licensed contractor for 15 years. This book and the JLC field guide are indispensible tools.
This book has made my life much easier, especially while explaining something to a client. The print is a little small for my 50+ eyes but having it compact makes it nice to store in the work truck. I have recommended it to a few other contractors and those who have got one use it regularly. Mine is getting a little worn so I may buy the new version soon. A must have for any legitimate contractor or handyman type.

I used prior versions in 2000 when I built a 22x40 addition with bathroom on our prior house. I loved them so much that I knew I had to get the complete book now that we're building a pool house with kitchen and bathroom. It's simple and yet has enough detail with just the right amoint of charts and pictures to keep it clear. I'm a simple homeowner with some handyman skills; not a contractor. This was the first time I ever built anything that needed a permit/ inspection. Using these books, I passed all my inspections, without any problems.
Small and easy to use. So helpful for someone wanting to do it right. My husband does volunteer building and repairs for a children's home in Mexico. This has been used over and over to make sure it's being done safely and correctly.
I used to do lots of building contracting, however lately I still do a few projects a year. This book is an excellent resource for verifying up to code information on your own, and not just relying on the sub contractors word of mouth. I really enjoy the hard binding and the tabular mehtod to which this book is arranged. Have only had it for 1 month and already have used more than I could ever have imagined. I used to have the individual code check for every category (building, plumbing, mehcanical, electrical) however trying to keep track of all of them was a hassle. Having it all in one binding is great. Would definately recommend this to anyone in the field.

I'm in my sixties, and that means I've had about six decades of eating the wrong diet, including wayyyyy too much sugar. While that kept me from going nuts as I negotiated the stress and work overload of being a teacher, it had to stop for my health. For the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE, I have found a way to face the things that have kept me overweight and undernourished: Sugar, caffeine and processed carbs. I heard Ms. Werner-Gray on a podcast last spring. I bought this book. The idea of eating pure, real food mulled in my mind and heart for a few months until one morning in July, I woke up and knew I could change -- or face the rest of my life like so many Americans, heading for disease. This prospect of dying with my legs up in the air is not for me. So, I pictured my life as a cupboard. I completely cleaned mine out! The first two days, I repeated a hundred times to myself: "There is nothing I wouldn't do to be healthy" and then totally enjoyed another juice. I had a migraine the second day from leaving caffeine in the dust, and I soaked in the pain a while to impress upon myself that being sick is not fun. Then I went to bed and woke up on the third day absolutely surprised at how good I felt and how much I just wanted good, real food. Now I wake up every, single morning wanting my shockingly beautiful, magenta-colored beet-orange-lemon-ginger-carrot-celery-parsley juice ... then have a sweet, bright, icy glass of spinach or kale with date, chia and sunflower in a spring green smoothie for lunch. For dinner, I eat foods that are colorful, alive and full of joy. My plate looks like a picture in a magazine. I take a walk everyday, listen to The Earth Diet podcasts (oh, my goodness, they are so excellent, informational, encouraging, hopeful and forgiving, and Liana's voice is so sweet and easy to listen to) and I also enjoy bouncing a few ten-minute sessions on my rebounder (Google that one. I was literally amazed at how many ways the rebounder helps the body and brain and WHY it's so good for us.) I buy organic food, have watched "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" and "Hungry for Change" a bunch of times for the inspiring, incredible information, and with all that enjoyable, exciting stuff going into my head, I simply have no interest or time for the Standard American Diet (SAD). I appreciate my Vitamix Blender and my Breville $99 juicer every day. These are excellent, important tools that make a pleasant difference. If all this sounds expensive, remember that so are cancer, diabetes and heart disea$e. In eight weeks, I have lost 16 pounds effortlessly, my nails and cuticles are naturally healthy for the first time, no more dizziness or ears pounding, no more headaches, I can get a deep breath anytime I want one, and in only another seven pounds, I will be the weight I was when I was 25. I feel lightened and enlightened. I've bought this book seven times plus once on iBooks. I keep finding people, loved ones and strangers, who need it as badly as I do. I have ordered another hard copy today, as the photographs, recipes and organization are as inspiring as Liana's incredible information. It's my coffee table book! I never knew food was so powerful. I never knew I was, either! If you wish to change your health or just validate what you're already doing for yourself and for your family, you will find a light bulb glowing above your precious head in this book by Liana Werner-Gray.
I checked this out at the library then downloaded the Kindle version when it was on promo at the beginning of the year. I have listened to Liana Werner-Gray for about 6 months on Hay House Radio before reading this book. I enjoyed what she had to say and her view on nutrition. I didn't realize her views also encompassed so much of lifestyle. I found a lot of the advice and recipes informative and easy to understand. Liana provides numerous resources at the end of the book. She also states that originally this book was self-published because she had such a desire to get the information out into the world, which I think is admirable. Based on customer testimonials, Liana mentions numerous ailments and diseases that eating whole, unprocessed foods from nature can help heal. She never states any backed medical claims, which I think is only fair. The only part I didn't appreciate was the 7-day cleanse style diets (including mono meals) because they seemed too-low in calorie, in my opinion. I am not a trainer or nutritionist, but as someone who is used to intense workouts (plyometrics, weights, yoga) and working 8-12 hour days, it just doesn't seem realistic to sustain on a net calorie less than 1200. Overall, the book is full of common sense, easy to understand whole foods recipes, and a simple format.
I was so excited to order this book, when I heard Liana on her radio talk show. To me this book really shows just how simple it is to live a more conscious & healthy life style. I've never considered myself much of a cook, let alone a vegan one. Being a lover of chocolate, my first receipe I tried was the "Raw Three-ingredient Chocolate." What a delightful surprise, & so easy to make & healthy all in one! Im in love! So, instead of rolling them into balls, I made hearts. Perfect timing for Valentines Dayâ¤
LOVE IT!!! best book I ever got , want to buy for all my close family and friends. Also the author is soooo nice and emails reply to me. Very good book def recommend it!!! This is exactly the way to live , so confusing with all these diets out there Paleo and more but this is what your looking for. A healthy way of life back to the natural.
Reading this book for the second time since finding out that I have high cholesterol and high triglycerides. She has what seems to be a simple way of eating. I also think it requires less cooking than many diets. I'm going to try as many of her suggestions as I can incorporate into my diet. I may not be able to do all organic, but hopefully just adding more fruits, veges, etc. will help. I would recommend that we follow her lead and go back to food that is not processed.
While the information and recipes are very good, there is some repetition of information, so the book could have been a bit smaller than it is. Having looked into many herbal remedies and other healing protocols, I was able to take the information in this book to heart; and though this author is very opinion-based in her presentation, I have the knowledge base to support the claims that she may seem to be making in an arbitrary way. The healthy protocols she presents are efficient and the recipes are wonderful, though some have rather involved steps, banking on a previous recipe to complete a more complex dinner dish. She has some very simple and basic recipes as well and I find them to be very diverse to satisfy many tastes. Over-all, I found this book and its recipes to be very beneficial.
This book made me think so much about many things I had taken for granted, like toothpaste. The recipes are mostly easy to follow, and the insights encouraging. I haven't found a dessert yet which tempted me, so I'm sticking to smoothies and fresh fruit! The chocolate desserts are very grainy, as is sadly the recipe for homemade almond milk (the figs never broke down enough regardless of how long I pureed them), unfortunately. However, the juices, salads, and main veggie recipes are wonderful!
It is good but some of the recipes have too much sugar, and I am against that.

In high school I would have told you this is my favorite book. I just re-read it 2 decades later. And I realize that I grasped about 20% of it at the time. Maybe. Something about the meandering philosophical flow captured my imagination at the time. But reading it now, as a father, I grasp the concepts underneath. I don't readily admit this but I wept at the end. Then I read the afterward and totally lost it. Beautiful, courageous work.
Looking at the reviews here, this book is loved by hundreds and reviled by a small percentage. I wonder what causes so much passion? It's wonderful that we have, among those who gave the book just one star, so many people who are so far above it intellectually -- too familiar with philosophy, too personally enlightened, perhaps -- to find any value in it. But I would like to point out to the subset of our best and brightest, those who tell everyone else not to waste their time reading it, that just because you got nothing out of the book doesn't mean no one else will.One of the complaints I see here is that there isn't much of the title's Zen nor much motorcycle maintenance, either -- and I note that the author says something about this in his introduction, so it must be true, right? -- yet I believe there is plenty of both. If the reader is expecting an introduction to Zen or a How To manual on motorcycle maintenance, those will not be found. It's not even the author sharing his enjoyment of either of the two fields with his audience. But the themes that run throughout the book explore many of the same ideas the Buddha did, and several concepts important to motorcycle maintenance that will not be found in manuals are discussed throughout the work. But the title really represents the duality that Pirsig puts under his microscope: Zen represents the hippie "go with the flow" attitude that is contrasted to the "slice and dice" schemes of technology, via motorcycle maintenance. And in the end, the title doesn't say just motorcycle maintenance; it's the "Art " that's critical, because one thing the book is aiming for is to show us that the science of technology is an art -- or at least should be an art -- and that the two ways of looking at life don't need to be in opposition, but can be quite naturally blended, to the benefit of all concerned.It might seem like the novel is caught in its time, with language about those who see things as "groovy" vs. "the squares" but the dichotomy between the two has been under discussion in various forms for centuries: romanticism vs. empiricism, passion vs. logic, science vs. religion. The same split is found today underlying two sides of the debate over climate change. If the book is not approached as being literally about Zen and motorcycle maintenance, but as using these as stand-ins for concepts that can be much larger -- or even much smaller -- there is a lot to be gained here.Another complaint is that the protagonist is not sympathetic, but that's because this isn't a novel written from the romantic side, nor, really, the empirical side -- it's not even a novel, though it reads a lot like one -- it is a true-enough tale of relationships between two related men, and a father and a son, and a road trip that carries with it time for plenty of slow discussion of philosophy. The book takes its time putting the pieces together, and the author isn't trying to win our love -- if you can approach the book on its own terms rather than with a whole load of expectations about what it should do and how it should do it, you may get something out of it -- but to truly enjoy it, you've got to go with the flow, you know?I know I get a lot out of it every time I read it. I love road stories, and this one is paced just like a real long-distance trip, with long stretches of time to think things through interspersed with short breaks for taking care of the business of life. That what's going on in the environment, relationships, and other encounters reflects what's being thought through in the long stretches is a small bonus. The writing is clean and evocative, enjoyable. For the most part, the carefully constructed introduction to all the elements needed to understand the philosophy is gentle enough to be clear and not overly taxing, at least until the deepest parts, which can be hard to follow (and for good reason). The elements of psychological mystery captivate me each time.I first read ZAMM the year it was released, in the mid-70s, and have read it at least every five years since then, and each time I thoroughly enjoy it. The first time through, I could not follow the philosophy all the way down into the descent into madness it brought on. Five years later -- with time for the ideas to be examined through my own life -- I got it, even agreed with it. This time, this reading, is the first time I ended up doubting the validity of the greatest philosophical insights the story offers. Ironically, it's my deepening understanding of Buddhism that changed my mind.There really is a lot of Buddhism in this book, and not specifically Zen, either, but the deepest themes common to all forms of Buddhism. The questions about the wisdom of dividing the world up into a duality of the physical vs. the mental, of seeing ourselves as somehow separate from everything else, these were explored by the Buddha, too, though the framework he used to discuss these ideas was -- obviously -- nothing to do with motorcycles. In Dependent Arising he, too, considers how it comes to be that we split the world in two. "Name and form" he calls this split, and later thinkers have described what he was talking about as the same subject-object division that Pirsig is mulling over in ZAMM. The Buddha, though, says that it is "desire for existence" -- not quality -- that, to borrow Pirsig's phrase, "is the generator of everything we know". I tend to agree with the Buddha because I can see in our lives, and through our sciences, what that desire for existence is and why it drives us to divide the world up the way we do, and exactly how it leads us into trouble. I can't say the same for Pirsig's metaphysics, but that doesn't stop me from deep enjoyment of the book. I hope to have another half-dozen five-yearly reads, if I'm lucky, and -- who knows -- maybe I will come around again to see it the way he does.
It was with a bit of trepidation that I started this book, being that there was a lot of hype about it and the assumptions I had made from this hype and what the 'Zen' part of its title implied. My concern being that I didn't want to set myself for disappointment if the book didn't live up to the (very) high expectations I had. I must say, this book is very dense and it was not an easy read... for me at least. Intermingled with the story of the father-son duo traveling through several states on their way West, there are many inner monologues where we learn A LOT about ancient philosophy and how the relentless pursuit of understanding Quality and Truth by the father affected his life and those around him. I had to make a point of finding a quiet place AND a quiet time to read this book just in order to keep up with it.I think that to categorize this book and give it a "grade" without the benefit of having enough time to thoroughly "digest" it is a nearly impossible task to achieve, but the one thing I can say is that I feel that I learned a lot more about philosophy than I thought I was able to, mostly because of the way ideas and terms were described by the author. I also enjoyed how the relationship between father and son was developed and how it all came together in the end, by which time I was reading as fast as I could, barely able to contain my curiosity!Is "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" for the 'faint of heart'? Probably not. I think that the analogy where wines get better with age is applicable here, where you, the reader, is the 'wine' and you must be at a later time in your life to truly be able to grasp what this book is all about. I may be giving it another go later on just to see what other things I may find, once I give myself enough time to (hopefully) grow wiser and have more 'miles' to show for. :)

The most outstanding thing about this CD is the language in which these stories are told. This is serious literature for children, and it is told in a traditional, rather archaic fashion. I think young listeners might find it difficult to follow and will need a grown up help to guide them along some of the outdated phrases and vocabulary. That, in my opinion, is NOT a bad thing. Who says children can't be entertained and learn something at the same time? They can and they enjoy it.My children are 6 and 8 and upon 1st hearing the stories I myself thought perhaps I was aiming too high for them, but they liked it and insisted upon listening over and over again. Some stories are more quick paced and there is not much need for explaining such as "7 in a blow" which was an instant hit with my children, and some are more complex and takes a few listening and some explaining before they could fully understand and enjoy it.I particularly enjoyed Bernard Cribbin Narration - pleasant voice and perfect diction. very well done.
I was drawn in by the promise of classical music used along with these stories. I thought it would be integrated along with the stories. I planned to use them for my elementary music classes. Yes, there is some music, but it's usually only at the beginnings of the stories. The stories are just dry readings of the tales, and lost my interest about 2 minutes in. Unusable for my classes.
A wonderful telling of fabulous stories while remaining true to a rich linguistic tradition. These stories are not dumbed down in the least and the narrator is a pleasure to listen to.My three and five year old have listened to these stories over and over again! I also read "Dick Whittington and His Cat" (retold by Marcia Brown) to my girls. This combination quickly became a favorite of my three year old. I can't recommend this cd highly enough if you are a fan of well written literature for children.
What a waste of money. Got this for my 3-yr-old, but the language is far too advanced AND the reader has a thick british accent. Thought it would be good stories for her to relax to, but it lasted about 2 minutes before she gave up.
My 18-month-old just loves the story of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, so I purchased this thinking that I could expose her to some more stories (which I've forgotten from my youth). She did truly love Goldilocks, and was so-so on the Three Little Pigs, but the others are a little mature for her. I know she'll grow to love them, though! The way the music is present in the tales, but truly not prevalent, is great in breaking up the monotony of the story. Also, the voices are terrific. Definitely fun for a growing toddler (and not so bad for mom, either).
I absolutely love to listen to Bernard Cribbins's well-animated voice when reading these favorite tales! He has a delightfully friendly British accent, and a wonderful cadence to his reading as well. While my nieces and nephews love these stories too, I've found his soothing voice to be rather calming myself on nights when I've felt particularly stressed, and decided you are never too old to listen to a great fairy tale at bedtime.To the reviewer who gave it one star...if you are so illiterate as to not read that this is an audio book, and therefore you will not be receiving a "read along" book, it likely would not have done you any good anyway had you received one. It's unfair to give anything one star because of your own misunderstanding and inability to understand what you are ordering.
My granddaughter loved this cd. She loves to listen to stories, so this was perfect. This would be for children who do not need to have visuals. I would say the child needs to be at least 4 or 5 years old. Love the fact that there are stories I listened to as a child.
I put them on at the bedtime for my child when I absolutely have no time to read, my parents used to do the same thing for me, so I want to create the same great memories for my son too.

I've been eagerly awaiting the publication of Janine Marsh's memoir, My Good Life in France, and was honoured to receive an ARC for an honest review. It's no surprise that this book is everything readers hope it will be. With her sharp insight after many years as an ex-pat in France and her engaging sense of humour, Marsh takes us on the bumpy road of highs and lows restoring a "truly awful" (her words) property in the north of France that captured her heart.Through the author's eyes and experiences we discover the (relatively unknown to tourists) Seven Valleys area in the Pas-de-Calais, which is now on my "must visit" list. Easily drawn into Marsh's entertaining narrative by her sharp observations and warm-hearted nature, we get to know her neighbours, the local traditions and her growing family of dogs, cats, and assorted feathered friends.Thank goodness for an understanding husband who is also an enterprising craftsman. There are challenges that would deter most from staying the course. Yet not only do the Marshes survive, but a brilliant new career path is born.This book is a delightful read that I highly recommend.
I have not read a book in a very long time (shame on me) because I care for my aged mother and have a small chicken farm AND a brain injured son, which keep me hopping. For the past 4 years, I would de-stress at night, by hopping into bed with my laptop and looking at real estate in France. I saw major projects, like Janine and Mark's barn-home, and some old, stone homes that needed upgrading but not to the extent that their's did. I always got lost in the fantasy of moving there....growing a few veggies, herbs and flowers....raising chickens, learning the language and leaving the stress of American politics in the dust.While reading Janine's book....I was living vicariously through her. Her description of the first house they looked at had me chucking out loud...I had seen so many houses that fit that description. I even wondered if I had seen THAT house on the Legget website! I learned so much...laughed out loud, and got incredibly anxious when I saw there was only one chapter left. Now what to do? Read it again??I do hope Janine will write another...and soon. I love her style, wit and knowledge. I doubt I will ever move there....much to my chagrin, but do hope to go back again. (I was there with my late husband for our honeymoon, in '99) Funny, I was only there for 2 weeks, but felt homesick once I came back to the states. I get that homesick feeling whenever I watch a French movie....and got it while reading the book. A great read. Seriously! Vive la France!

On a "whim" she and her husband embarked on the challenge of restoring a dilapidated building in northern France. With minimal language skills, small budget, and the frustration of dealing with the French bureaucracy, she found a way to maintain her optimism and sense of humor.The reader gets a reality check of what it takes in time, effort and money to take on such a project. Along the way you learn about the climate and culture of this region-the things that would endear you or terrify you.While I never planned on setting up a future home in northern, rural France, I discovered I will need more money and patience and a never ending sense of humor to successfully maneuver my move.I found myself chuckling out loud! Can't wait for a sequel.
I've purchased over twenty books about France this year and My Good Life in France by Janine Marsh is my #1 favorite. This book details, without providing long, drawn out details, the author's decision to leave London and live in France. I love how creative the author is with words and the storyline. At times she made me feel as if I was right there observing her adventure in person. Filled with rich details and stories about French people, the French culture, French foods, and language, as well as French customs and landscape. Love, love this book and would highly recommend it to anyone hungry for details about what it is like to relocate one's self to France.
I had been so looking forward to this book and when I downloaded it on kindle I started it immediately and literally could not stop til the end. Brits Janine Marsh and her husband impulsively bought an awesomely dated, rundown house in northern France. This books is an accounting of that renovation over many years. It is also an exploration of very loving relationships in her family and with the many people who have become her "family" in France. Marsh writes very well indeed and her writing captures her persistence, curiosity, courage, intelligence, always good humor and most important her love of all things French and of all animals, especially discarded ones. She never liked to cook but fortunately her husband does. Despite the trials (and there were many) they are still in the house in France and friends and family still visit! She still loves all things French and admits she is still learning though she studied French in school for years. She writes an ongoing blog that now has more than 500,000 followers! I am now rereading The Good Life in France.
