When I walked into Barnes & Noble two weeks ago, I wasn't actually looking to purchase a book. Usually, I go in, browse for 30 minutes, and get out. But when I walked around to the Physics and Science section, the first thing I saw was Elon Musk's face.Inevitably, I picked it up and began reading.2 pages in, I decided I was in this for the long haul and sat on the floor, right there in the middle of the store. 15 pages in, my friends finally found me and forced me to leave. But I couldn't part with this. I needed this book. Those first 15 pages captured me like so few books do (in fact, only one book in the past year has totally stolen my attention like this).So I bought Elon Musk feeling on top of the world and excited to keep reading.I travel a lot between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, PA, so, since I'm in the middle of taking classes in Pittsburgh, I swore to only read this book on the bus, because I knew once I picked it up again, I wouldn't put down.I was right.The next day, I got on the bus, got to reading, and tuned out the world. Three hours later, I was nearly halfway through -- and WOW. Vance's writing style flowed right through my mind. No clunky sentences, no jarring phrases. It's such an easy book to read, despite the complex nature of the contents.Elon Musk, if you don't know, is a biography. Yes, a biography. You'd expect the case-study of someone's life to be boring and uneventful, dragging until the very end.This wasn't the case at all.Vance opens the book at an interview with Elon Musk himself. The first line, a quote from Musk, "Do you think I'm insane?", perfectly captures the whole context of the biography. Because as you experience the story, as you see the challenges Musk went through to reach the pinnacle he's at today, the question nags at you. Musk isn't soft-spoken, or easy on his employees, or a man who kicks his legs up on his desk and snoozes while his companies mill around him. Vance shows how Musk is both the CEO and an employee of his companies, simultaneously the teacher and student. He gets in the work, asks all the right questions, gives all the right orders. His vision is THE vision, and if you get in the way, Musk has been known to fire you on the spot.Musk breaks every convention, every tradition, every standard. Vance takes you deep into the details, from Musk's childhood and lineage in South Africa, all the way to Canada and the United States, where the bulk of the story unfolds.When Musk looks at big businesses, he sees unmovable behemoths that refuse to change their methodologies. American innovation became a thing of the past. Technology and industry was growing - but nowhere near as fast as it should. So we follow Musk's journey from his small start-ups, Zip2 and X.com, and move into his larger, more permanent ventures, namely SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity.I myself am a huge fan of Elon Musk. Still, until the past year or two, I only thought of him as "that guy who made SpaceX" and "that guy who runs Tesla." Until reading this book, I never knew the struggle -- no, the hell he went through to make and keep these companies. You think, oh, he just has a lot of money.Yeah, now he does. But did you know SpaceX and Tesla were hours away from going bankrupt? Did you know that the Falcon 1 rocket kept failing, and one more failed launch literally meant the end of SpaceX? Did you know SpaceX tested these rockets on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and would fix problems they encountered in a matter of days, as compared to months by standard companies?This book is the first time Musk has explicitly let anyone interview him for a biography. Aside from a few questionable quotes that have been publicly denounced by Musk after the publication of this book, we're still given a tremendous amount of insight into his head and how he runs the companies. Vance interviewed more than 300 people and spent over two years compiling this account. And I have to give credit to how up-to-date the information is. There are several events Vance mentions that occurred into 2015, such as the first landing attempt of Falcon 9 on the sea barge, which took place in January, and he refers to the second attempt as being in a couple weeks, which means that Vance included this information on a very tight deadline, probably mid-March (the second landing attempt happened on April 14, 2015).I want to congratulate you, Mr. Vance. Well done. Very well done. I'm going to reread this book in a few weeks (probably after the scheduled June 19th third Falcon 9 landing attempt, this time on solid ground, as opposed to a barge). Anyone who wants a ridiculously thorough insight into Elon Musk's life and companies should read this book. It had me from Page 1 all the way to Page 363, and even the appendices that come after.This is an incredibly inspiring book, a important look into a game-changing business strategy, and a valuable lesson to the world. As Musk says, "If something is important enough, even if the odds are against you, you should still do it."
One of the most inspiring books I have ever read. A few life changing points for me:1) First intro chapter shows how relentless the author was. Great lesson there. He didn't ask for permission, he just went out and wrote it. Said he was going to write it with or without him on board. Which ultimately won Elon's respect since that's how he operates too.2) Elon and his brother Kimbal coming over at 18 years old from south Africa. Their tactic about picking up the newspaper and cold calling the most interesting people to take to lunch is awesome. I challenge myself to do this now and I think its a great strategy to get out of your comfort zone. I gather he had the idea for pay pal with that tactic - it landed him the bank internship where he discovered the inefficiencies of banking world.3) Elon has no "fear" button. Inhuman ability to withstand massive risks, pressure, and family drama all at once.4) I bought 20 books. That's how much I loved it. Would call up and take a "mad scientist" or business investor or tesla owner For coffee/lunch/networking and tell them about how great this book is and see what crazy ideas they had brewing as well. Started connecting them together and meeting all kinds of moonshot thinkers. Great Networking Icebreaker.5) Requested a tesla charging station be installed at my place of work because well...we need to encourage more telsas around here and If Elon stops by we will be ready.6) Googled Justine found her Ted talk she did about him And enjoyed Elons commencement speech too. 7) Started an interest in this whole solar idea, Bought a solar cell phone charger that will be a gateway into way Into it and go from there. Tours of people that have solar homes in the area.8) Most ambitious dude ever with this whole Mars thing.9) After you read this book you will never again complain about being busy.10) I didn't realize Larry Page and Elon were so close. Hope he is wrong about the AI thing though, but also triggered me to buy the book "the singularity is near"I love the impact of the cover and I write a favorite quote in and give as a gift of inspiration to innovators in the area.
I've been inspired by Elon Musk for a while. His accomplishments are legendary and I wanted to know more about the men behind them. This book doesn't disappoint. We see both the amazing drive and unstoppable vision as well as the ongoing challenges Musk has had working with people who are inevitably either not as smart, but as driven or more likely, both. Few had the fortitude to stick with him and the ones that do are fiercely loyal.What I love most about Elon's story is how powerfully he deals with every obstacle thrown into his path. Literally nothing could stop him. Not looming bankruptcy or bad press or any of dozens of other issues that would have stopped most of us. I hope to find 5% of that drive in myself after reading this book.
This book has made me one highly motivated aerospace engineering student and given me some great insight into what it would be like should I ever get hired at SpaceX.

Author and prolific punster Richard Lederer was once asked which of his own works was his personal favorite, and the answer was The Miracle of Language, in which the reader is treated to a collection of fascinating and enlightening essays. Dr. Lederer celebrates language as "incomparably the finest of our achievements" and passes along some eloquent testimony on the emancipating power of language in the lives of such people as Helen Keller, Richard Wright, Malcolm X, Anne Frank.The author identifies William Shakespeare as the most prolific word-maker who ever lived, a man credited with the first use of over 1,700 words, nearly eight percent of the different words that he used in his writing. Next is Samuel Johnson who, with his breakthrough dictionary, captured the majesty of English and gave it a dignity long overdue. Others include writers such as Ambrose Bierce, Lewis Carroll, Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, T. S. Eliot, and George Orwell. Going on to Harvard Law School, he discovered that he was even more interested in the language itself than in the law cases which he was reading. He switched to a Master of Arts and Teaching program at Harvard, and that lead to a teaching career in Concord, New Hampshire.Lederer earned a Ph.D in English and Linguistics at the University of New Hampshire, and was inspired to write books on language, starting with Anguished English: An Anthology of Accidental Assaults Upon Our Language. This was followed by More Anguished English, and then by Fractured English.The popularity of these book and and the subsequent titles motivated him to leave his teaching position and pursue further writing and speaking opportunities... and we gained from reading his books on word play, language bloopers, puns and his frequent use of the oxymoron. Dr. Lederer is known as a "verbivore," a word that he coined in the 1980s. His interests include pointing out common grammatical errors and fallacies, uncovering word origins, and exploring palindromes, anagrams, and other forms of recreational wordplay. On top of that, he was Punster of the Year (P.O.T.Y.) in 1989.A few year ago he wrote The Cunning Linguist, a book in which he shows us the naughtier side of wordplay, revealing hundreds of hilarious, ingenious, unabashed, and adults-only puns, jokes, limericks, one-liners, and other adventures in humor. As the author says, this book is "300 pages of good, clean, dirty word play for appreciative punographers." I had to fully agree in my review of this book.More recently, author Lederer has released Amazing Words: An Alphabetical Anthology of Alluring, Astonishing, Beguiling, Bewitching, Enchanting, Enthralling, Mesmerizing, Miraculous, Tantalizing, Tempting, and Transfixing Words. Wordsmiths of all ages will appreciate what they find here, despite the author's hippopotomonstrosesquipedalian title (the word is in the book), which is made up of nineteen words and 166 characters. For this reader, it's another that has been added to my personal favorites.The Miracle of Language is one of those books that has had a special place on my bookshelf for years. My original copy was replaced some years ago, and even that copy is getting a bit dog-eared from frequent use. Next time I'll probably have to get The Miracle of Language: Kindle Edition so that it never gets lost.10/20/2012

Who knew that the English language could be so interesting?
My daughter brought home a copy of this book, and during her visit, we talked about it and language in general. The author is brilliant and funny. We ended up reading more of his books, and books about language all through the summer. With her in Texas, and me in central PA, we've had many discussions about local speech. It's been a fun addition to our relationship.
It was what I expected the book to deliver.
Useless. A waste of money. So overly dramatic, it's like reading a love story that never ends, without any complete characters. Just wish it had gotten straight to the point and gave instructions on how to use language to bring words and writing craft to life. If I didn't pay next to nothing for it, I would've sent it back. But for a penny, I'll keep it and let it take up shelf space. I hate I wasted the shipping and handling costs.
Excellent 101 book! I highly recommend it to anyone fascinated with the mystery of communication. It is a memorial to the vicissitudes of symbolic consciousness.

About the Author
UMRAN S. INAN is Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, where he serves as Director of the Space, Telecommunications, and Radioscience (STAR) Laboratory. He has received the 1998 Stanford University Tau Beta Pi Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, and actively conducts research in electromagnetic waves in plasmas, lightning discharges, ionospheric physics, and very low frequency remote sensing. Dr. Inan has served as the Ph.D. thesis advisor for 13 students and is a senior member of IEEE, a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, the American Geophysical Union, the Electromagnetics Academy, and serves as Secretary of U.S. National Committee of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI). AZIZ S. INAN is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Portland, where he has also served as Department Chairman. A winner of the University's faculty teaching award, he conducts research in electromagnetic wave propagation in conducting and inhomogeneous media. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi and IEEE.

Integration of authors earlier two books on Engineering Electromagnetics (which did not do transmission and reflections vs arbitrary incident angle) and Electromagnetic Waves (which had general transmission and reflection case, but not electro and magneto statics). If you have the earlier two books, you have just about everything and more that is included in this single volume with the exception of some newer examples. Very nice descriptions of distributed vs lumped components and time delay. Wish some author somewhere would explain how size of hole in Faraday cage affects shielding effectiveness and include enough of a discussion of variational methods so undergrads would realize that the capacitance of a pair of conductors of an odd shape is always smaller than the capacitance of some known configuration that would enclose them, such as parallel wires enclosing rectangular wires (i.e. how to set useful upper and lower bounds for capacitance, resistance, inductance without detailed calculation) but you still need to find such usefuls facts in Jackson or Collin end of chapter problems.

It is impossible for me to give a meaningful number of stars to this book, so I will just compromise with this middle of the road rating. In summary, the content is 5 star material; the problem is that there is nothing new here. Context for a 5 star rating: I own everything Rupert has published. All contemporary non-dual teachers have their strengths. Furthermore, different people learn with different approaches , so there is no way I am going to say that Rupert is the best. However, in my humble opinion, this man's ability to express complex ideas is nothing short of miraculous. Again, in my humble opinion, no one comes close. This book might not be his best, but if it was the only one he published, it would be a slam dunk 5 stars. Context for a 1 star rating: I live well under the poverty level, and have to be very careful how I spend money. Within that context, I am sorry I bought this book. I know that one cannot judge books on how thick they are... how much material they contain. But, just to let you know, it is a small book (5" X 7") with 102 pages. With huge margins. Fifty to sixty pages of material in a normal book. I can't say this with 100% certainty, but I don't remember seeing a single new idea in this book. That's not necessarily bad, as different perspectives, different metaphors, different examples can turn such a book into a must read. But there wasn't much of that either. In summary: if you enjoy non-dual authors or are a Rupert fan and have no real book budget, what the heck... buy it. You'll probably get something out of it. If you haven't read Rupert, try The Nature of Consciousness. But if you've read much of Rupert and don't want to spend $14 to read stuff you have already read, I'd suggest you stay away from this one.
This feels like a shining GEM capturing the essence of meditation and the Direct Path (the pathless path) as well as language can possible do this. It continues his almost fractal way of writing from many directions to get at the heart or essence. His Transparency of Things and other books are so very excellent, but this little guy at 101 pages and around 8.00 is truly an offering to humanity from and for the ages. What better time in the midst of the upheaval most all of us feel going on in these modern times.
Page per page this tiny book is the most profound spiritual work I've read (and I'm including the Tao de Ching). It really connects one to the silent awareness behind all forms that arise and dissolve.
I preordered this book last October. Well worth the wait! A small but powerful, thought stopping, silence filled delight. Mr. Spiras' books have always hit their mark with me. He is in on my spiritual bookcase with all the other amazing teachers that have come to teach us our true identity as unblemished,eternal,formless Awareness. His works sit with Nisargadatta,Ramana,Muktananda,Paramahansa Yogananda,Tolle,Thich Nhat Hahn,and Adyashanti.
"Being Aware of Being Aware" culminates a year of reading (and contemplating) Spira, Wolfe, Adams, and Lucille, Osho, and Merton. 23 years ago, I picked up "ACIM" and read it and reread it for many years. Then "ACOL." Then "The Way of Mastery." It's quite clear to me now what all these books and authors are saying. I'm done. All that's left now is adjusting to being back Home.
Rupert Spira takes the essence of awareness of awareness and puts it into words in a way that leads the reader to grasp its nature without having had the experience. This has helped me in better understanding how to meditate along the direct path. This book also has so clearly and touchingly described the source of our longing for things and relationships...a longing that in my life has been a source of disappointment and anguish.
Rupert Spira quoted his teacher as saying the truth has to be reformulated by every generation. In my opinion, Spira did a very good job of reformulation.Spira presents an ancient truth in modern language that anyone can understand. He reveals that realizing our true nature -- pure awareness -- doesn't involve taking a spiritual journey, because our true nature is already at hand in the here and now. He explains this using a metaphor of a movie projected onto a screen. There is no separation between the ever-changing image and the ever-present screen. Other wonderful metaphors are used in the text, like the one of a small wave upon a boundless ocean.The only criticism I have about this book is that it is easy to confuse the meanings of the simple terms that were used. For example, it wasn't always clear whether "mind" was referring to the individual ego mind or the boundless Eternal Mind. Also, the terms "consciousness" and "awareness" seemed to be used interchangeably, although I suspect they may have slightly different meanings. So although it was commendable that Spira avoided esoteric Sanskrit terminology, there were times when a little more specificity would have helped to understand what he meant. The metaphors were most helpful in understanding the meaning of being aware of awareness.Spira says the great difficulty people have in becoming aware of awareness is entirely due to the fact that awareness cannot be observed from an exterior vantage point, as is the case in normal object/observer dualism. So although awareness really is closer than close, it seems distant and inaccessible because of this non-dual property. He drives home this point by using the metaphor of the Sun illuminating itself.This is a short book, and it can be read in a little over an hour, but I'd recommend savoring it to get the most from it. You may even want to read it twice. ;-) I disagree with other reviews that complained that the book didn't say anything new. After all, how many versions of he truth are there? Although the book is indeed quite brief, it is well worth five stars in my opinion. The significance of a truth doesn't depend on the total number of words that are used to reveal it.

"Mao's Last Revolution" is not about Mao. And it is not really about the Cultural Revolution. Instead it tells the story of how high governmental officials and organizations were affected by the Cultural Revolution and how they jockeyed with each other, and with Mao, in deciding how to react to it. The point of the title is that the revolution was Mao's idea and that even people immediately below him didn't know what was going on, what the point of it was, or what they were supposed to do about it. The book describes the actual events of the revolution indirectly, if at all. It seems at times to assume that the reader already has a good basic knowledge of the Cultural Revolution and of the Great Leap Forward; that knowledge is not essential but is helpful.The book is well-written and useful, though more for those with a special interest in the Cultural Revolution than for the general reader.The Kindle version does not contain any of the book's photographs. To add insult to injury it does contain their captions -- with an instruction to refer to the printed version for the photos themselves! Nothing on the product page (now, at any rate), reveals that. In my opinion this is essentially misrepresentation on Amazon's part. The Kindle version also contains the formatting errors that we are becoming accustomed to seeing -- hyphens between paragraphs, gaps between words, etc. I read it on an iPad but at least one other review here also complains about this so its apparently not an iPad-only problem. And the footnotes are not hyperlinked.I've been reading Kindle books since they were introduced. You would expect the technology to improve over time. But as Kindles are becoming more expensive they are also becoming shoddier.
I have only just started reading this book, but love it already. The introduction is GREAT! You can read about the first half of it in the "Look Inside" feature here on Amazon. The book may be too detailed for a casual reader, but to anyone studying this period of history it is invaluable, and you must quickly memorize the single page of abbreviations in the front of the book.One problem I have is that there appear to be no "notes" in the footnotes-section, simply references to publications that most people will have almost no ability to access. Frequently, the text will state something as a conclusion, without any background on why that particular conclusion was reached. In many, many cases there should be anywhere from a sentence to a couple of paragraphs of elaboration, not merely a reference to a specific page in some obscure text.
Mao Zedong’s notion that the population of China was expendable for the cause of revolution, no matter how many suffered, warrants further examination into understanding the destructive events surrounding this complex man. Yet, explaining an event as complex and lasting in impact as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution in China is no easy task, let alone doing it through a book with writing that can be detailed and impartial in its bias, whilst simultaneously remaining engaging. The exhaustive research of the authors provides not only accounts of specific events, but indeed, what the perpetrators of such a calamity were thinking as they masterminded this event, through access to journals, letters, and conversations. This book is an excellent choice not only for those who wish to learn more about the Cultural Revolution, but for any teacher or professor of Political Science, International Studies, History, or Sociology who is looking to enhance their students’ understanding of this event.
The best book I have read on the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The authors have added a great deal of depth to the subject. Their analysis of Zhou Enlai's role was different then the usual approach that makes him the good guy saving Mao's victims. The book is worth reading just for this view. The view of Mao is no surprise and should make sure Mao is seen as a strange driven unstable person who was addicted to revolution and bored with the work of organizing a successful society. He needed to be the center of attention. The short biographies at the end of the book is useful to keep the players straight and there are many people to keep track of. I often flipped back and forth from the body of the work to the glossary. There are many biographies of Mao but this one focuses on the last decade of his life organizing one last revolution,this time against his own fellow revolutionaries. Reminds one of Stalin killing off the Russian revolutionaries. Liu Shaoqi loyal #2's purging, imprisonment and horrible end makes a sad comparison to the adulation given the leader who does such damage to so many Chinese. Leads one to think nothing more dangerous then being a Communist who isn't top dog. Book is a must for any library about the history of modern day China.

About the Author
Timothy G. Stout lived in Japan for 20 years and has taught Japanese language for 23 years in public and private schools, and at the university level. While teaching at the American School in Japan, he conducted research on the use of keyword mnemonics in the instruction of Japanese. Stout has a Doctorate in Education (EdD) from Utah State University, an M.A. in Japanese Pedagogy from Columbia University and a B.A. in Japanese Teaching from Brigham Young. He currently teaches Japanese at Utah Valley University and resides in Lehi, Utah with his wife and five children. Stout is the author of Japanese Hiragana and Katakana for Beginners and Let's Learn Japanese, both available from Tuttle.
