About the Author
Kaja Finkler (PhD CUNY) is professor emerita of anthropology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she had taught for twenty five years. Previously, she taught at Eastern Michigan University. Professor Finkler has published widely in her field: she is the author of five books in her areas of expertise, including her last book Experiencing the New Genetics. Family and Kinship on the Medical Frontier published by the University of Pennsylvania Press, and over fifty articles in refereed journals dealing within her specialties, With Lives Lived and Lost she is drawing on personal experience, with the eye of a participant and observer- informed by her anthropological and ethnographic proficiency. Golda Finkler, born into a prominent rabbinical family, was descended from several Hasidic dynasties, and was immersed in and profoundly knowledgeable about Jewish Orthodox life and Hasidism. She was also a feminist, and studied law in the Wszechnica Polska University in Warsaw at a time when very few women, particularly Orthodox Jewish women, attempted such programs. After surviving World War II ghettos and slave labor camps, she arrived in the United States in 1946. She had an exceptional memory, and this book is largely based on the more than 100 audio tapes she left behind upon her death in 1991 describing her life, the spirituality that helped her resist the Germans and survive the war years.

This is a unique book that revives a lost chapter of history and with exquisite detail tells the remarkable (call it miraculous, perhaps) narrative of her own survival as a captured child during the Shoah (Holocaust) and that of her mother who also survived separately. The Finklers also portray an intimate view of the Polish Chassidic community before, during, and after World War II.

I don't believe this is a "deep dive" book at all. I agree with previous comments that its at the same level as the standard Oracle documentation.There are no useful insights or traps to avoidl Very disappointing.
The content does not dive deep into the SOA management and monitoring. Specifically, talks nothing about the SOA dehydration store.
This is a good extensive work on 12c.The material is explained with more details. I would recommend it to 12c readers.
Having attended Mike's GC 10g deep dive training classes to fellow Oracle Consultants, while working with Oracle Consulting, I was impressed by the way how the author structures and presents the complex matter of deploying OGC 10g in major real life projects in a logical and systematic way. This was a compelling enough reason for me to purchase the first Mike's book `Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Implementation Guide'. The book was a crystal clear summary of Mike's experience on a dozen of GC10g real life deployment projects and training deep dive classes delving into the inner working and deployments of the GC product. It goes without saying that the first book raised the bar of expectations from a book on a complex product such as Oracle Grid Control 10g and his successor Oracle Cloud Control 12c.Few years later, once Oracle Corp. released Oracle Cloud Control 12c a lot of improvement was introduced to the product and the complexity and new features and functionalities of the product were overwhelming. That is where, after already having a quite high expectations for a GC/CC book, I purchased the `Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Deep Dive' book. Mike and his co- authors in their book brilliantly managed to present the new concepts, architecture,new features and functionality of the product while explaining in a systematic and methodological manner and delving into inner workings of the installation, configuration, support and maintenance and real life's deployment scenarios of the product and usage of the various product features and functionalities. The new `Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Deep Dive' book is NOT another re-write of the official Oracle Cloud control documentation or an illustration of how to follow the documentation in order to have a OCC12c running but rather a well structured deep dive into the complexity of the product for a real life deployment using the new product functionality. The book is all you need to get an insight into OCC 12c complex real life deployment no matter whether you are new to OGC/OCC product family or you have a previous OGC experience.The 1st part of the book familiarizes the reader with the OCC 12c concepts, helps to assess the readers' needs of OCC12c deployments , plans the deployment and thoroughly examines the installation, configuration, patching, upgrading and deployment options and describes the subsequent OCC12c post installation maintenance, support and performance tuning tasks, processes and methodology.The 2nd part of the book focuses on leveraging the rich OCC 12c functionality for managing the cloud and the pertaining components such as databases, systems, storage, infrastructure, middleware to name a few. The new book achieves a successful blend of the overall picture while diving deep into the implementation and deployment details and how they fit into the big picture.
The new trend of pasting the words "deep dive" (and other colloquial terms) is an abuse of customer and user trust. This book merely parrots what you can already find in the Oracle documentation, with perhaps a couple extra screenshots here and there.The one possible good thing about this book is that it collects a summary of the available documentation and relevant notes into one place.Those 5-star reviews..... *laugh*

I want to attempt a comparative review of six instructional books for the beginning painter, which I will eventually rank. Before I go into this, here are a few words about where I'm coming from. Needless to say, if your background and expectations are different from mine, you may well arrive at a completely different evaluation of these books.I am relatively new to painting, but had some drawing skills already. I was looking for a book that starts at the very beginning (what supplies to buy etc.) and then introduces me to a range of techniques for painting in realistic style. More specifically, I would like to see the following in my ideal book:(a) Reasonably specific step-by-step instructions that don't leave me guessing how the author got from A to B; at the same time, I would like to be treated as an adult and have clear explanations of why I'm doing what I'm doing throughout;(b) exposure to a variety of techniques such as painting in layers, alla prima;(c) demonstration artwork in realistic style that inspires me to learn what is needed to get there.One more general remark: four of the books I'm reviewing here work with oils and two with acrylics, please keep this in mind if you have already decided on what your favorite paint is. I'll note this below. (I used both oils and acrylics at an early stage and would actually recommend this approach.)(1) Still Life Painting Atelier: An Introduction to Oil Painting (oil): For me, this is head and shoulders above the rest. It succeeds in all three criteria (perhaps the author's artwork is not the most stunning I've ever seen). I'll give it a clear A.(2) Painting for the Absolute and Utter Beginner (acrylics): Pretty good in my opinion, with many useful little tips in it, though sometimes it could be a bit more specific (rather than "work on the shapes, refine the colors") and it wasn't always clear to me why the author made the choices she made (why glaze here, use opaque color there?). I'll call it a B+.(3) Painting in Acrylics: The Indispensable Guide (acrylics): This is actually an excellent book, just a bit different from what I described above. It works great as a reference book (and as a coffee table book, fantastic artwork in it). I won't grade this one.(4) Lessons in Classical Painting: Essential Techniques from Inside the Atelier (this book, oil): A pleasure to read and look at, and similar in approach to Friel's book actually in the instructional parts, but it has a rather different feel to it, much chattier and philosophical and light on the actual hands-on instruction. That's a B for me.(5) Oil Painting Secrets From a Master (oil): Sorry, but advice such as (random example, the book is full of this) "it's not how to paint what you see, but how to see what you paint" doesn't do it for me. Also, much of Leffel's work (the "master" from the title of the book) is too loosely painted for my taste. I'll give it a C-.(6) The Oil Painting Course You've Always Wanted: Guided Lessons for Beginners and Experienced Artists (oil): This seems to be a popular book, but I honestly can't understand why. The instructions are unmotivated and too vague, and the author is an abstract painter whose attempts at realistic demonstration painting in the book are unconvincing (especially the portraits). Some useful information, for example on color mixing, but the book just didn't work for me at all as a course. I'll give it a D.By the way, the drawmixpaint videos on youtube are another wonderful resource, in my opinion.
This is a very detailed and well illustrated high quality book for the artist who wants to master traditional representational oil painting. I used to teach oil painting at the college level and would use this as a textbook. The lessons are thoughtful and move progressively from value to color study. I highly recommend this book to any painter at any level of development. I consider myself a professional, but everyone has more to learn.
This is by far the most helpful book on painting I have ever read. First of all, the writing is philosophical, beautiful, and inspiring. Secondly, the technical information, especially on color mixing and theory, is invaluable. Although it requires more thought, patience, and practice, the classical approach to painting rewards the artist with the satisfaction of understanding.
This is by far one of the most useful books on the underpainting technique. I saw it after I had read her book on Drawing and it used my skills by half at least. she writes well and actually gives you practical lessons to achieve , if you are not serious about painting for thousands a week then do not buy this book, give it to a student who is willing to put in the time to find his chops.
This is an amazing book on painting. It teaches you how to see as a painter, and focuses on overall questions of composition, value, form, etc. rather the step-by-step approach offered in many other books. I'd much rather see something that tries to impart universal approaches to visual art than a how-to on painting every subject matter imaginable. If you're interested in painting as an art, buy this book.
As a classical painter, I was curious to compare ideas. I love the book, it is well written and well organized, with refreshing insights and ideas.

I own a dizzying number of grilling and barbecue cookbooks, most of which hew closely to established techniques and tropes, with variation mostly in the details - an interesting marinade here, a refinement of technique, a new take on a side, perhaps a bit of gentle encouragement to weekend warriors to try out a new cut or throw that salmon on a plank. And that, truly, is great - too many grillers limit themselves to steaks and hotdogs every Sunday. Anything that gets people trying new stuff is a great thing by me. But a lot of us have a bunch of grills, know our way around a semit kebap or jerk chicken or a pork shoulder, and we're restless. We're looking for some inspiration, for someone doing a new thing with food and fire.Chef Byres' cookbook is a new thing. What he's done with the flavors and techniques of Mexico, the Southwest, Texas, and the Deep South is more than a cookbook: it unpacks the creative process, inspirations, favorite techniques, and ideas of a uniquely creative open-fire cook. Doing so is no easy thing: the weight and pressure of tradition and "how it's always been done" is hard to get out from under in this genre, and many have tried and failed to bring something new to the table.Whether you work through his recipes or simply use them as launching points for your own innovations and work based on your own "nostalgic food memories," you'll be creating fresh, interesting food that touches what we all love about the foods of the Southern and Southwestern US but which carries a unique imprint. This is a great, great book for the experienced griller.
If you're looking for a cookbook with simple, straightforward recipes, this is not for you. There are some very simple recipes, such as his red chile vinegar ( which just whisks together vinegar, cayenne, salt, lemon, and sorghum). But this appears as part of a spread on how to roast a whole hog.And the red chile vinegar is just one of 36 ingredients you'll need to make his recipe for crispy pork souse with deviled egg (138-9) - five to brine the pork, eleven to cook or "pickle" the head and hocks, six more for assembling the terrine, six each for the deviled eggs and the salad to accompany the souse, and finally two more to complete the presentation.And three of these "ingredients" are actually recipes from elsewhere in the book, one of which combines four other recipes (with ingredients that come from still other recipes, etc), so, all in all, there are 9 recipes to consult, 75 ingredients required, and days of advance preparation, just to assemble this one, deceptively simple dish. Similarly, his Bloody Mary Mix (236) calls for 14 ingredients, 6 of which are recipes elsewhere in the book, so really you need 40+ ingredients and 7 different preparations to make the "mix" that's just one of seven ingredients (several of which - you guessed it! - are recipes from elsewhere in the book) you need to make his Bloody Mary. If you want to serve his Bloody Mary Sunday morning, you better start early in the week.In other words, cooking from this book requires a real commitment to cooking from this book.But in my experience, it's well worth it. His recipe produced the tastiest souse I have ever had. And for my part, I relished (pun intended) the opportunity to see how a gifted chef assembles a satisfying plate from his store of ingredients. You can learn more from thinking through this one recipe than you can from other entire cookbooks. Similarly, I've spent hours gazing at photographs that illustrate how he plates a dish - particularly the Pickled Beet Carpaccio (70) and the Pork Jowl Bacon with Half-Sour Cucumber Salad (137). There's nothing foofy about his arrangements - no silly squeeze bottle daubs or squiggles, no biscuit-cutter-assembled towers, no ingredients tweezered into place - just simple ingredients laid out with great artistry. Again, I've learned more from this book about putting together a beautiful plate than I did from years working in some kitchens.Even though I'd rank this cookbook as one of the best in recent years, and it definitely deserves its James Beard award, it does have its faults.His technique for making sausage is poor - he grinds the meat and fat too warm, which will degrade the texture, and he adds salt just before mixing and stuffing, with the result that he has to rely on added binders like dried milk powder.More seriously, for a restaurant called Smoke and a cookbook dedicated to "New Firewood Cooking," some of the things that he says about smoke and wood are plain wrong.In his primer on firewood cooking (18-20), Byres claims that "a constant white smoke" is what's "desired." Anyone who's serious about true slow and low barbecue knows better. White smoke may be acceptable, to get a lot of smoke flavor in a short time, but thin, blue smoke is best. Blue smoke is the sign of a fire that is hot (around 750º F) but smoldering rather than igniting. This combination produces a rich, aromatic smoke, full of the invisible gases that color and flavor smoked food.Byres notes correctly that green wood is undesirable for smoking, as it "produces an extremely bitter, tarlike smoke." But then, like countless others, he recommends soaking wood chips in water before using them for smoking. The only difference between "green" wood and "seasoned" wood is the moisture content, so taking dry wood and trying to wet it is the opposite of what you want to do. It's true you don't want chips igniting, and soaking will help prevent that, but wet wood yields steam not smoke, and while doing so it cools your fire down, and low temperature smoke is "bitter, tarlike smoke."He also claims that it's possible to over-dry wood, "which causes it to lose energy." This is pure mystification. Trees convert solar energy into stored energy in the form of carbon, specifically cellulose. As you'd think, cellulose is not degraded by over-drying (or wood-built houses would fall down every winter, when the air dries out). On the contrary, the energy value of wood is directly related to its dryness, as heat is lost in the process of evaporating and driving off whatever moisture remains. Cellulose can be dissolved by fungi, which cause the wood to rot and soften, but they require moisture. ("Dry rot" is another myth.)So four stars rather than five, even though I love a lot of things about this book and heartily recommend it.
I wanted to make sure I wrote a good review for this book. I bought it for my dad for Father's Day and he loves it as much as I do. He wanted a book about smoking meat (he does a lot of fish already and wanted to expand). This book is perfect for anyone who wants to smoke meat, build their own smoker, and/or so much more. All the recipes for condiments (home-made sour cream? pickled mustard seed? yes and yes!) are included. Fire-pit cooking, building a barbacoa pit... I literally spent hours going through this book looking at the recipes. Did I mention the photography is great and it comes on a solid, hard-back binding. No complaints about this book, 5-stars hands-down!

I bought this as a gift for a friend who loves to cook. I had the chance to peruse through it the last time I saw him. I'm not sure if he has used it, but I definitely would!

I can't say enough good things about this graphic novel. There are many fictionalized accounts of Musashi out there, including the long running Vagabond manga series, but this is the only factual historical graphic novel. Sean Michael Wilson manages to tell an engaging story while maintaining rigorous attention to detail. The artwork is also beautiful yet carefully researched.This book is a real treasure. It's obvious that the creators have a real love for Musashi and Japanese history, and they really do it justice here. I was surprised to see how complete of a life story this was, given the relative brevity of the book. After finishing this I went back and re-read The Lone Samurai, and was pleased to see that not only wasn't anything left out, they even added a few extra details. And using a brilliant storytelling move of having the story told by Musashi's adopted son Iori, they were even able to deal with some of the historical controversies surrounding Musashi's life.After seeing so many fictionalized movie portrayals of his duels (many of which are frankly quite silly), it was exciting to see the famous duels as they really were, over in a matter of seconds. Musashi's precision was astounding, as seen in the scene where Sasaki Kojiro's famous long sword (The Laundry Pole) slices through the cloth tied on Musashi's head but leaves him untouched, while the wood sword (which he famously carved from a boat oar only that morning) came crashing down into Kojiro's forehead. And Sean Michael Wilson applies this same precision to his storytelling.Simply AWESOME!
As a lifetime student of numerous martial arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, Kenjutsu, Kendo, Wakizashi-Jutsu, Tanto-Jutsu etc.) I have read numerous versions of “The book of five rings†by Miyamoto Musashi as well as many articles and books on Japan’s most famous “Sword Saint.â€This is the first graphic novel version of Miyamoto Musashi (by Sean Michael Wilson illustrated by Michiru Morikawa) I have ever read on this famous figure in Japanese history. This wonderful book is organized into nine chapters and the story of Musashi is told through his adopted son Miyamoto Iori. The story begins with the completion of a monument to Miyamoto Musashi designed by Yonemura-Sensei. Yonemura-Sensei desires to know more about Musashi and his son, Miyamoto Iori is happy to answer all questions concerning his father.The nine chapters relate the various stages in the life of Musashi, including his most famous battles. Even though I had read much about Musashi in other books and articles I still learned a lot of other information on Musashi reading this graphic novel version. Musashi was not only an undefeated swordsman, fighting sixty duels, but was also an accomplished and respected poet, garden designer, and Zen master. Besides his most famous work, “The Book of Five Rings†which is still read today by all serious martial artists, he also wrote “The twenty-one maxims of the way of walking alone.†These maxims are considered the basic philosophical principles he has followed and they are included at the end of chapter nine.If you are into the martial arts this is a book that should be in your personal library, along with his “The Book of Five Rings.†A beautifully fully illustrated book.Rating: 5 Stars. This is a must have for Miyamoto fans. It's different than the usual Toshiro Mifune or TV Drama ,but it's interesting. It includes a battle in which Musashi was injured. Beginning with Musashi's death after finishing the Book of Five Rings, it's shows the aftermath of his death. He was the best Ronin in Japan and deserves to be remembered for his skill.
I am not certain I would recommend this work.However it might be appropriate for an impressionable adolescent reader interested in the romance of martial arts as a form of personal magic.M
It was by chance that i came across this book. Having never heard of musashi, I decided to try it out after watching the movie 47 ronin.it's interesting took read about ancient legends. Worth it for sure if you enjoy Japanese tradition.
I do wish the fighting scenes would give some idea of the action.Other than that it's a nice way to learn about the life of the person who wrote "five rings".

This book was in poor shape, the binding was seperated completely and pages were falling out, product is being returned
Got this used and it was in great condition. Good book on the topic, easy to read. I don't understand why these books don't give solutions to all the problems...seems to be something all text books have done from the beginning of time. That's silly.
Answers are wrong in the back of the book. Our professor also mentioned that the book has many mistakes.

I recently tutored a co-worker for the electrical engineering Professional Engineering license exam and this book greatly helped out in explaining Laplace transforms. The book covers transform circuit analysis by starting out with the basics and then building up to Laplace transforms. After reading this book and working through the examples, I feel much stronger in this area of electrical engineering. I have a B.S. in electrical engineering and a P.E. license since 1995. I have read several other books on this subject, including differential equations text books and I think this book presents the clearest explanations and examples applied directly to electrical engineering. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in electrical engineering.
I'm a few chapters in. The information seems to work out ok, more examples would be nice. I bought this brand new and its already falling apart :( I tried to flatten a section to get it to stay open and the binder glue is letting go, now I have pages on the verge of falling out. Sad construction.

There has been a great deal of publicity surrounding this book, the meticulously researched fictionalised account of the events leading up to the execution of Agnes Magnusdottir - the last woman to be executed in Iceland and so I began the book with high expectations. They were surpassed. From the first page I was transported to a different place and time and I became oblivious to everything around me. ended up staying up nearly all night to finish this book not because it is full of suspense but because I was "there" with the characters and did not want to / in fact could not leave them. The writing is beautiful,the research fantastic. - I am recommending it to all my family and friends.
Based on the tragic and harrowing story of Agnes Magnusdottir the last woman executed in Iceland in the early 1800's. It's a deeply moving account of Agnes a workmaid, and her two co-accused who were sentenced to death for the brutal murder of two men. One her lover and master.Awaiting her execution, Agnes is sent to the small and isolated holding of Jon Jonsson a District Officer and his family to await her execution. Spiritual salvation is delivered by the young and untried Assistant Reverent Toti who is appointed by the court after Agnes requests his services. During her time with Toti, Agnes tells of her life leading up to the murder through a series of flashbacks.Agnes herself comes alive as a compelling character and has a quiet dignity. Abandoned by her mother and fostered out to various families until she becomes an almost nomadic servant who travels from each isolated holding looking to make ends meet. It is a grim and gritty existence. Agnes wants to be loved and falls into the mistaken belief that the love she felt for the murdered Natan will be returned.It took me some time to sort out the characters and familiarize myself with the names, but once that was established it was very easy to fall into this mesmerising and evocative story. The writing style is almost lyrical and a picture of Iceland, the judical system and living conditions are vividly brought to life on the page. A time steeped in paganism, premonitions, dreams, sagas and a struggle to survive.It's an emotionally draining and compelling novel, that has a very genuine feel for time and place. The claustrophic and dirt packed squalor of the crofts, the isolation and characters allow the reader to glimpse a time past.A beautifully rendered and powerful story, lovingly delivered on the page.
This book touched me deeply. My father was born in 1920 in a sod house in the north of Iceland. He was descended from Snorri Sturleson, who wrote many sagas, but he was also the illegitimate son of a Scottish/Australian father who abandoned his mother in Copenhagen. In despair, she went back to her family's sheep farm.As a child growing up in California, I would ask my father to tell me about his childhood. He would just say that he was never a child. For the first time in my life I can understand what his life must have been like and why he never wanted to go back to Iceland. When he was 5 years old, he rode his horse one full day to the nearest doctor to get his tonsils out, then rode back the next day. He spent several years in a tuberculosis asylum. He didn't see a car until he was 12. A year before he died, he told me that at age 12 he was sent to work on another farm where the farmer often beat him. Miraculously at age 20, he got a scholarship to John Hopkins University. He was supposed to go back to Iceland after graduation, but went the opposite direction to California instead.Looking at Iceland now, it's hard to remember its impoverished past.Thank you Hannah Kent for all the research and care you put into this book! It's right up there with Nobel laureates Sigrid Undset and Halldór Laxness. I'm looking forward to many more of your books!
