My 9 year old daughter loved this book. It was definitely below her reading grade level but it was fun to see a new spin on an old story. It represents the black experience as a whole so I had to explain different religions that were represented in the book. She looked forward to seeing everyone character and called out with excitement "I can't wait to see what the mad hatter looks like and the......". She's a reader so she curled up with the book, went on her adventure then shared with her friends and family than her school. There was a voodoo part that could have been left out in my opinion. We used it as a teachable moment. There's a glossary in the back of who the people are in the pictures

Love this book! It's so rare to find children's books that represent a diverse audience and this one definitely does a great job of that. Plus it's such a creative take on the Alice in Wonderland story—I especially loved the twist on the traditional characters like Tweedledee & Tweedledum, which modernizes the adventure and makes it more relatable for kids today. It's such an engaging approach to re-telling this classic that also incorporates many important figures in African American history, adding that educational element. I bought it to give to my 9-year old nephew and my niece's baby, who are all of mixed African American heritage, and everyone (including the adults) enjoyed it. The illustrations are really cool too and as a creative professional I also appreciated the book's visual design and dynamic layout. The art itself is just beautiful. I highly recommend it and it definitely makes a great addition to anyone's children's book collection / library!

This book is fantastic! This is an amazing remix of a classic American story. The artwork Is simply outstanding and the cultural references teach African American history and offer opportunities to educate throughout the book. I got the book for my nieces who are stuck at the hip (4 and 5) years old and this is the only book they want to read now! I cannot wait for more books from this amazing company. This book is well worth the purchase, it’s educational, and I just love to see my nieces smile and garner a true love for reading.

There are about 4 typos in this book. I spent 20 dollars for this book as a gift and when I went to read it with my sister I sounded like a first grader, trying to figure out what the book meant. What a disappointment. I was so excited to support this book and author but the typos were just sloppy. I was so embarrassed reading this. I spent so much money on books and this was the most expensive and only one that was entirely messed up.

This book is absolutely beautiful and amazing. I am so VERY VERY impressed. The Glossary is everything. Educational, entertaining, abd a fun spin on a classic.

As a parent who reads a plethora of books to our children, I must tell you that this is a must-have book for your collection. It’s entertaining, sweet and educational. I like how this book appeals to children of every ethnic background whether you are white or Hispanic or African American or mixed race. Love it and can’t wait for more from the author!

I really love this book and so does my daughter. Buy it if you are AFAM for your family... Really like it.

just picked up a copy of this book at local used bookstore. bought without really looking at it because I own a pizzeria and whenever I'm in berkeley I go to the cheese board and am always in awe of the 40 minute line they have all night every night for two choices of take home pizza. i figured it would have something interesting to make it worth buying. thumbing through it today, it's a much more interesting find than I expected. there is an in depth sourdough and yeasted bread section but also all sorts of stories and insights into the behind the scenes stuff of a bakery and their business practices that I find particularly interesting. this book is definitely worth checking out from the library or picking up a used copy. several used copies on amazon for less than $5.

This is one of the best cookbooks that I own. The bakery from where these recipes come from is in my neighborhood and after eating many of the items whose recipes are in the book I was delighted to find that I could purchase the book. I have had a weakness for their Cherry Corn Scones and when I tried the recipe I was delighted that they turned out so well. The directions are excellent especially for making the yeast breads. If you love baking a variety of pastries, cookies and breads with easy, helpful directions then this is a great book to own.

While I was lucky enough to live in Berkeley, the Cheeseboard was a legend in every sense of the word. The Cheeseboard is THE place by which I judge all other breads and baked goods. I made the scones and they were declared "f@%*ing amazing" by people who normally eschew "dry, brittle" scones. Next, I made my own sourdough starter and it's awesome. Afraid I'd screw it up, I emailed the coop to see if I could buy some of the Cheeseboard starter the next time I was in town. Their reply: "We offer starter as a neighbor would offer a cup of sugar." This is more than a business, it's a community project. These people are Berkeley at it's best. I never made it back to the Bay Area, but I did start my own as per their directions and it's really, really, really good. This book is awesome and everything I've made (scones, sourdough, focaccia) has exceeded expectations. It's well-written and contains excellent instructions for fool-proof bread. The only time my bread failed is when I struck out on my own. I make the City Bread on weekends and enjoy a slice every morning with some butter and jam. It is moist and lasts about 5 days without losing too much texture. The older it gets, the longer I toast it. I actually get cranky when I miss out on it. My thanks to Cheeseboard for writing this great book for those of us who are no longer able to walk to the "Gourmet Ghetto" but keep a place for it in our hearts.. and stomachs!

There are two types of generosity that one deals with in regard to cooks, bakers and other culinary artists. The first is generosity of table where what is put before you food wise reflects time, effort, attention and care. Memorable meals, hosts and foods all show a generosity of the table.What is harder to find is generosity of knowledge where a cook will give you their prize techniques, recipes and knowledge for no other reason then to spread knowledge and pleasure though it might dilute their "brand" or mystique. You know people who never let go of a prize recipe because it is too valuable, too precious; something to be passed on to generations.I am happy to say that this cookbook reflects both kinds of generosity. The Collective really tries to convey the table type of generosity by providing a lot of blurbs from members and clients. Trying to give the atmosphere of a cheese shop where you and the seller spend time establishing trust and tasting models one thin cheese slice at a time.This book displays the generosity of knowledge by providing ALL the recipes loved by customers of the Cheeseboard. I spent a fortune buying the Olive Provolone bread, zampanos and other heady bread goodness that could be bought every time I left home and returned. When I left Berkeley sometimes I would think back longingly to bread from the cheeseboard during my travels.Now to the technical aspects. The book is definitely designed for people who have had previous experience with baking though they do show some rudimentary things like the window pane for gluten development. Still I would say that this book is not for the beginner but someone already comfortable with the bread making process.It is not as technically exhaustive as Silverton's _Breads of La Brea Bakery_ or Rheinhart's _Baker's Apprentice_but it does provide basic ideas and recipes that are used.Layout --The layout is not as user friendly as I would like with clear break-out steps so it is highly recommended that you read the recipe before using because the movement of the eye is not broken with subheaders and lines.The color of the paper is cream with use of black and red typography. It is done as a paperback that with use will become the scratch and sniff type of cookbook easily. If you bake and collect consider getting two copies because one will get quite a beating.Recipes -Solid gold for those who know how to bake and have the necessary equipment, like a baking stone. For those who have no patience to spend DAYS doing a sourdough starter this is not the book for you. Also, if you are a newbie to baking bread use Reinhardt's _Baker's Apprentice_ as a way better introduction since this book assumes you know what tacky and elastic dough refers to.I recommend this book highly with its anecdotal style, generosity of knowledge for any baking collection especially, a collection specializing in the northern California food revolution. However, for those just starting the adventure of baking there are way better teaching books.

If you have ever lived in (or even just dreamed of visiting) Berkeley, California, you are familiar with The Cheese Board's delicious breads and know why this is an absolute must for any baker's kitchen. I have had a lot of success with this book, and I am definitely just a casual baker.

Hard examples of major recent power outages and time it took to recover, instead of just a few examples.For instance if 1 major transformer is lost do we stay or do we go?If you know nothing about the grid and the potential for it failing, nothing about cyberwarfare and the possibilities, this might be a good introduction.It's a very easy read without a ton of details. And it shows what the government is not doing. If you remember the Northeast blackout of 2003 in which a software bug plunged 55 million in to the dark then you know the possibility of computer failure taking down the grid.

I have no real way to explain away what is likely, so, now it is to try and figure out how a small family makes it through and to seriously consider if it is even something that we should desire.This is a book worth reading and acting upon. A very interesting story about this particular portrait. I find it highly ironic that the subject and her Mother initially were happy with it and then recoiled when the critics found the dropped shoulder strap scandalous. Then later, she apparently wanted to try to get some notoriety back and had another painter do a similar painting, which was essentially greeted by yawns by both the public and the critics.

Madame X is one of those paintings that everyone knows, or thinks they do. And there are many books about John Singer Sargent. So why another one? The simple fact is that the story behind the painting is even more fascinating than the story we think we know. Two Americans, trying to make their way in Paris society of the Gilded Age. One a painter on the cusp of greatness. The other a woman whose seductive power has opened doors that many American society women could not budge. The painting was to be their master stroke. But it backfired, and how! This book is well written, has plenty of illustrations (so important in a book about paintings), and is a glimpse into a world so very foreign to our own. What went wrong? Read on.

I really enjoyed this easy to read book. The author's style is informative but not too academic and she keeps the actions going by just describibg the many interesting characters that inhabited the Parisian art scene at this time. Although she never uses the word, the book is an interesting commentary on the sexism that women have suffered through the centuries. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in this painting, John Singer Sargent or women, men and scandals of a not too distant era

Always a devoted fan of John Singer Sargent and enthralled by Madame X from the moment I first saw the painting, I devoured Strapless. I believe Deborah Davis did her research and I wish there was more to know about Amelie Avegno as both Sargent and the painting Madame X certainly have eclipsed the original woman. Sargent captured her in what I consider to be his best work, which is saying something considering he was prolific and left a mesmerizing look into the Gilded Age and those privileged few who inhabited that world. Amelie's life began in Louisiana, the daughter of the Proud South and a product of the plantation system, guided by her very strong grandmother and mother. The haunting photograph of Amelie and her sister, Valentine, during the Civil War shows the long arms and tiny waist as well as the Avegno nose which would be her trademarks later. Her life as an expatriate in Paris during a truly fascinating time period is intriguing while her ambitious mother set about marketing her daughter for a good marriage. Amelie embodied the modern woman of Paris but sadly, being a Professional Beauty has a short shelf life which doomed her to a miserably empty existence.I think the chapter, Dancing on a Volcano, dealing with the peculiarities of the citizens of Paris who found viewing corpses in the morgue as entertainment yet were shocked by Sargent's painting is very well done. Ms. Davis explains how confounding the duplicity of this was. There were plenty of "traditional" nudes of women on display but people chose to be shocked and horrified by Sargent's depiction of Amelie as she really was, with that shoulder strap casually slipped down and her proud arrogance. One is left wondering how differently things might have turned out if he had sent the copy with the strap on her shoulder to the Salon instead, would everyone have been as outraged?Honestly, I wish there were more details into this woman's life, but she lives on in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, beguiling and elusive, a testimony to the unwise strategy of basing one's entire existence on one's beauty when we all grow old.

I never knew the portrait was originally called Portrait of Madame X. I always thought that was how people referred to it because of its femme fatale attitude. This is an engaging back story to the painting of this iconic portrait. The author worked in Hollywood as a story developer and it shows. She takes what is essentially very little hard information and paints a vivid picture of the lives involved in this masterpiece and the era which produced it. The story development comes through in an overabundance of phrases like "One can imagine that she was among the guests at the grand ball." and "He might have felt..." Loaded with storytelling license that sometimes goes too far, it's still good to know the background of one of America's greatest portraitists and the woman whose reputation he ruined with his most famous work.

This book is simply awesome and a great read! This is an honest bio of a very funny guy who doesn't pull any punches. I find myself laughing out loud as I read it and really gives you a great inside look into the life of David Spade. I think after writing this review I'll go catch Joe Dirt 2 on Crackle. LoL!. Highly recommend this book!

This was a funny and casually well-written book, a good read But it's a little frustrating because it abandons the "narrative," if you will, without finishing it. The first 2/3 of the book deal with Spade's upbringing, his grind through the comedy club scene, and his slow climb from SNL writer to SNL performer. Even though it's written with a light touch, that stuff is all pretty compelling. But it drops that thread after he's made it as an SNL cast member. It doesn't tell the story of what prompted him to leave SNL, or his movie career (except for Tommy Boy), or his experience on sitcoms. Instead, the last 1/3 of the book morphs into more of a George Carlin "Brain Droppings" type thing -- little observational essays on miscellaneous topics ranging from doing cocaine to his thoughts on dating tricks that women pull. I would have been really interested to hear why he made the jump from SNL when he did (given how hard his climb there was) and whether he's happy or not with his sitcom and movie work. The guy writes so well and so honestly about his career that I certainly could have read a lot more of it. But still, this is an entertaining read and I'd recommend it for anyone who likes a fun, self-aware memoir.

As a Gen Xer going to college during much of David Spade's SNL stint and loving the entire cast and every sketch during those early 90's, I became a fan of his a long time ago. I love his standup, so funny to watch. This book is not written by a professional writer which makes this better...he writes this book like he's doing standup which works perfectly for his story and his personality. As was mentioned previously a million times, I hope he comes out with another book picking up where he left off and talking more about the rest of his professional life (and personal). Dennis Finch is one of the best TV characters of the last few decades....would love to read more about that. This book gives a really fascinating insider's look at how the SNL sausage was made during that time. I have read several books by comedians but this one gets more personal than other's I've read. After you read this, you come to the understanding that he was a regular schlub, just like the rest of us, who worked his butt off to get where he is...and he must be a really charming guy.

Sure, I expected this to be laugh-out-loud funny, but who knew one of the year's most honest, engaging and fascinating celeb-memoirs would be David Spade's "Almost Interesting". I could not put it down. I blazed through it. Obviously and refreshingly NOT ghost-written, the book flows in such I way I could practically hear his voice in my mind as a I read it, his funny asides and interjections a constant source of amusement throughout. His behind-the-scenes insights into the challenges of stand-up comedy, life on the road and his years in the trenches of "Saturday Night Live" are appreciated, as are memories of his friendship with Chris Farley.Being an Arizonan I also got a kick out of his Arizona youth in the slums of Scottsdale (still probably pretty nice compared to most poor kids' upbringings), running loose in the 1970s desert. His observations about Generation X and the pre-internet Instragram-less world are hilarious.I'd like to have read more about his film career, and TV series post-SNL (we were huge fans of "Just Shoot Me" and Spade's Dennis Finch character, which are barely mentioned here) but perhaps that will be in a subsequent sequel which I will gladly buy.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading David Spade's memoir about his upbringing in Arizona, his SNL and movie career and the crazy anecdotes he acquired along the way. I particularly enjoyed reading how the movie Tommy Boy was made. In fact, I watched this movie again after reading this book just to see all the jokes and craziness that he mentioned in this book. If you enjoy David's comedy and his frequent use of juvenile language, then you will enjoy this book. If you are not a fan of his comedy and colorful language, this book is probably not for you. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it wasn't well written. The language and word choices were pedestrian, almost as if a high school student wrote it. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading his stories about his life and career, and I'm glad I read it.

Lets face it David Spade is a funny guy, so as expected his book was funny yet honest. The way it is written it makes you feel as tho your hanging out in his den, having a bud and chatting. He lightly touches on Chris Farley which everyone always wonders about. I mean come on, they were THE comedic duo! As expected there is an inherit sadness which is totally understandable. Of course he isn't going to divulge everything but that period of time had to be extremely painful. Even with that sort of brutal honesty and raw emotion, his tale of making his way thru comedy mean streets is fantastic. I laughed, I cried and everything in-between. It made me view David Spade as more than just Dirty Joe Dirt. However, I get the distinct feeling Dirty Joe Dirt lives somewhere in Mr. Spades past. It was a eye opener to learn he grew up in Casa Grande, Az. I live not too far from there, but he has left Casa Grande in the dust. All in all I would highly recommend this endearing book to anyone who is, or isn't a fan of David Spade.

John W. Creswell, PhD, is a professor of family medicine and co-director of the Michigan Mixed Methods Research and Scholarship Program at the University of Michigan. He has authored numerous articles and 28 books on mixed methods research, qualitative research, and research design. While at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he held the Clifton Endowed Professor Chair, served as director of a mixed methods research office, founded SAGE’s Journal of Mixed Methods Research, and was an adjunct professor of family medicine at the University of Michigan and a consultant to the Veterans Administration health services research center. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar to South Africa in 2008 and to Thailand in 2012. In 2011, he co-led a national working group on mixed methods practices at the National Institutes of Health, served as a visiting professor at Harvard’s School of Public Health, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. When I purchased this book, I thought I’d be getting the legit 5th edition, not a book from “bad” batch that was accidentally printed and now being sold as the “real thing”. C’mon. In my class of 20, two others students had the same issue. With 3-4 errors (typos, spacing, punctuation) on each page, it can be difficult to take the book seriously and follow along. This version SHOULD NOT be sold for $40! I should’ve gotten my book from the original publisher.Edit: I posted a review on the distributor's page and, when I requested a refund, they were going to withhold my refund until I deleted the review.

I bought this as suggested by a professor... only to find out that we cannot use Creswell as a source because the information is too general and not as relevant as the school wants. After reading the book, I kind of agree. It's find for a very general use, but some of the information makes it more confusing than helpful. If you want to learn about research design and are enrolled in classes, just check your school library section for articles on specific designs.

An excellent resource on the research process, stepping through the entire sequence step by step, including selection an approach, literature review, application of theory, strategies for writing, and ethical considerations. The entire research process is covered, with numbers examples and tables to provide guidelines and insights. Under the actual chapters on research design, the authors cover the specific contents of the research report - introduction, purpose statement, research questions and hypotheses, as well as specific guidance on the design of all three approaches - qualitative, quantitative, and mixed method approaches.An exceptional resource in the design and implementation of a research project.

I have been reading Creswell's work since I was a PhD student years ago. It is still very good and very useful. Now I am using this as a text for my research methods course. Students find it just as easy to read and just as useful as I did. This latest edition has more illustrations of the various methods than previous editions. That is a strength. It is fairly basic, but that, too, is a strength - it doesn't overwhelm the student with information they are not yet ready to process. If you want depth in any of the methods, you need to consult some of the original sources that Creswell cites. For a good, usable view of the basics, this is a very good book. My only problem, and this may be just my problem, is that Creswell is by his own admission a fan of mixed methods research, so he includes a lot on mixed methods. My experience is that students in academic settings will seldom use mixed methods only because this form of research tends to be more time consuming than allowed by academic constraints. Even so, it is a very respectable way of knowing, and students ought to be familiar with it.

I have earlier editions of Creswell and find the book to be well written and easy to follow; he helps you to just "get it" and breaks the information down and makes it make sense....stats not my most liked but area but necessary and much needed part of the big picture.

Comprehensive and clear, Creswell provides a scientifically useful and extremely well written guide to research design. This book has to be one of the most important books I have read during my course of study.If you are in a doctoral program or just thinking about one, get this book. If you are contemplating a career in research, either academic or practitioner, get this book. And if you are just trying to figure out what to book to get next for your kindle, get this book.Yes, it's that good.ADDENDUM:I wrote this review months ago. Since then I've given this book as gifts to friends. It's interesting to me that in that time the price of this book has gone steadily UP! Amazon is no fool. They would not increase the price if there was not increasing demand. As such, if you are considering buying this book, save yourself some money by buying it TODAY. Chances are later it will cost you more.

This book does have some strengths - it is very scholarly and thorough. However, it was not very readable and tended to present topics sometimes at least, in an overly complex and jargon filled way. I found that Google searches were often more helpful at explaining the concepts. At the same time, this is a good reference for a serious researcher who is revising a paper, but a beginner to the research process is likely to find it unhelpful/excessively erudite. In sum, should be a required text for doctoral students, but handled with care for mere beginning graduate students.

First off, why is the digital version twice as expensive as the print? That literally makes no sense so shame on Amazon for that one. Secondly, the digital version is a vastly inferior product, the text doesn't line up, the tables are all broken up over several pages and not really comprehensible. It is not hard to fix this on the front end so in the end you get a broken product for more money. Nicely done Amazon.
