Author David Grann spent years doing research and uncovering new evidence in writing Killers of the Flower Moon. Since I was a fan of his from reading The Lost City of Z, I expected this latest book to be the sort of non-fiction I love: the kind that reads like the best fiction. I was not disappointed. What I did not expect was just how infuriated I would become by reading it.Having been a huge horse racing fan when I was a teenager, I knew about the wealth of the Osage Nation in the 1920s. One of the Osage owned a winner of the Kentucky Derby. But that knowledge was just cursory. I had no idea how rich the Osage really were, and I certainly didn't have a clue that the government didn't trust them with all that money. I should not have been so naive. It had to madden many whites that, although they'd shoved the Osage onto a piece of land they deemed unfit for themselves, oil would be discovered and the Osage would turn out to be the wealthiest people in the world. The one way they had of trying to horn in on this wealth was by declaring that the Osage were not fit to use their own money wisely. In many cases whites were put in charge of the families' money, and they gave their wards allowances (and themselves large fees for their business knowledge).Why on earth should I be so surprised that this greed would escalate to murder? It is the natural progression after all. To this day, the Osage have trust issues, and who can blame them? They tried to get dozens of murders investigated, but instead the killings were covered up. What Grann did in Killers of the Flower Moon was to dig deeper and deeper and expose just how huge the problem actually was. As I read, words like horrifying, unspeakable, and several others flashed through my mind. This is an uncomfortable read for anyone with a conscience; nevertheless, it is a fascinating and important one.(Review copy courtesy of NetGalley)
This is one of the best true crime historical accounts I've ever read. From start to finish it is compelling reading that didn't let me put the book down. A darkly fascinating subject well rendered.
This is one of the most heartbreaking and terrifying books I have ever read. I hope that it becomes a staple of reading lists for American history classes. It is an incredibly well told story of a staggering real world evil in an America only two or three generations removed from our own. You should read it. It won't take long - it is, though it feels crass to say so, a genuine page-turner. And I at least will likely wrestle with it for a long while. Man o man.
Since the 17th century, the Osage tribe claimed land from Missouri west to the Rockies. With the Louisiana Purchase, the tribe was forced to cede land to accommodate the flood of western expansion. In Chronicle One of Grann's book, the history of the tribe is laid out. By the 1870's, what remained of the Osage tribe settled in NE Oklahoma because their chief deemed the land too hilly for white settlers to want to file claims there. The tribe negotiated with the Department of the Interior that any reservation land used for oil drilling or mining, had to be leased from the tribe and that the full blooded Osage would share in any profits from these natural resources. Logs where kept of Osage tribe members and indeed, when oil gushed from leased reservation land, head rights were claimed. The Osage tribe were among the wealthiest people in the country. Starting in 1921, Osage tribal members began to die. Some were shot in the head while others suffered from a mysterious "wasting" disease. Many suspected murder and lived in fear of who might be next.Chronicle Two describes in detail the role of the Bureau of Investigation (the early FBI) to unravel the murders during what became known as "the Reign of Terror." The Bureau was formed under Teddy Roosevelt in 1909. By 1924, J. Edger Hoover became head of the Bureau. He wanted to highlight the expertise of the Bureau by solving the Osage murders. He hired a former Texas Ranger, Tom White, to lead the investigation. The reader discovers clues along with White as he methodically collects evidence and interrogates witnesses and suspects . This is the most exciting part of the book. Many, but not all of the culprits are brought to justice.How are the Osage doing now? This is the gist of Chronicle Three and it is, unfortunately, the weakest part of the story. Grann checks in with the descendants of some of the murdered Osage. Their sense of unease and lack of justice is palpable. The oil has dried up and the tribal population has diminished. Some press Grann to help them bring closure to the holes in their family histories. But the ancestors are in their graves along with the murderers and the paper trail is weak or inconclusive. As Grann runs out of answers, this reader ran out of interest. It is a compelling and important story up to this point. Now that wind turbines dot the prairie of the Osage reservation, their future seems as bleak as their past and the lack of justice seems as limited as their future. Despite Grann's extensive notes and lists of resources, the reader is left, like the Osage themselves, with more questions than answers.
I loved Grann's The Lost City of Z so I was eager to try this. Unfortunately, it was drab in its telling. I’m glad I’ve finished it, though. It’s a fascinating & important story, that shows the appalling extent of exploitation that Native Americans endured.The first three quarters of the book are spent in minute details. That was interesting, but too long. That case had little to do with the birth of the FBI, other than it was one of their first (if not the first) investigation and coincided with the rise to power of J Edgar Hoover. The final quarter rushes through the implications and unsolved mysteries of the murders, then the book abruptly ends.In short, far too much detail about one case, then not enough detail about what it all meant and the larger picture.Not terrible, but unlike The Lost City of Z, not great.Larry Nocellaauthor of Razor Wire Karma: a novel, available on Amazon

I've shelves full of beautify books about the Middle East and the wider world of Islam. There is nothing like this out there. . .each double spread page, complete with maps. . . describes a bazaar and helps you find your way through labyrinthian alley ways. I just wish it was easy to carry around. Guess I will make copies of those maps and highlight on each, what makes that particular bazaar a "must experience"!
I would recommend for any one interested in the history of the bazaars in the middle east. many pictures help reader visualize the feel.

What an amazing book - i have been to most of these souks . The sad truth is that many of them are no more , since the Arab Spring 2011 ... Aleppo was my favourite, till it was burnt down in the civil war.
I checked this out of the library, and when I get back from Syria and Lebanon, am going to buy it. An entirely different perspective from anything I've ever seen. Even if it does omit anything about the ongoing conflicts of the region, we already know all of that. This tells us and shows us something we don't know. When I'm walking through the bazaars in Damascus and Aleppo, I will be carrying this book in my head and seeing everything differently because of it.

After reading and enjoying "World Made By Hand" I almost immediately moved on to this sequel (2nd in the series). I enjoyed it just as much as the first one, hence the five stars. I can already sense that the author is beginning to flesh out his future vision more substantially here. Is it a perfectly-constructed vision of a post-oil future? Probably not, but the occasional minor improbabilities that did pop up were not big enough to distract from my enjoyment of the story.As with the first novel, the story takes place in rural upstate New York, with the main characters living near Union Grove. At least a few of the residents seem to be shaking off some of that apathy that seemed so prevalent in the first novel, learning to be grateful for what they have and starting to think about how they can make it better.I'm not quite sure why the author chose to title his book after "The Witch" since looking back from the end of the book, I did not see her as the most central character of this story. I think I'd have to award that honor to Jasper Copeland, the 11-year-old son of the Union Grove doctor. I found most of the characters interesting, and liked the way that all of the separate threads were woven together in the end. A part of Jasper's dilemma put me in mind of something from "Lonesome Dove" involving former Texas Ranger Jake Spoon and the characters he got mixed up with.As far as other reviewer comments about the state of technology are concerned, I agree that after serious depopulation and the leavings of an entire Industrial civilization to pick through, I can think of a few things not mentioned that should still be lying around and capable of being put to use, at least at the point in time at which this story takes place (not SO many years after the collapse). One does need to remember that large objects need to be hauled by animal or muscle power to the place they will be used, however, which is not likely to be a trivial undertaking, especially in mountainous terrain.A little more mysticism was introduced this time around with The Witch, but even the previous story left the reader wondering exactly what powers Brother Jobe, the leader of the New Faith sect, might have at his disposal.Down in the 1-star and 2-star reviews I saw more of the now-standard complaints about the lack of strong female characters in this novel, and the fact that those people found this a weak and unbelievable tale on that account. While it true that the women of this world aren't central to the story (perhaps The Witch excepted), I would respond with a few observations. The first of these is that for the greater part of pre-Industrial history, women most often had just such invisible roles, and it is certainly not outside the realm of possibility to consider that things might revert to that again on the backside of the Age of Oil. It actually seems a little silly to assert that the most implausible thing one finds in this post-Apocalyptic novel is not the collapse of technological civilization itself, but the reversion of women's roles to something more in line with historical precedent.There are thousands of post-apocalyptic novels out there, embodying countless visions of the future. Most of them won't agree in every particular with one's personal vision, personal preferences, or politics. I have read a number of these that I found unpleasant to contemplate and unlikely to occur (for example, "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy), but were to me fascinating visions nonetheless. It's silly to let your politics spoil a good read, and if you need a fantasy that matches your own dream of the way the post-Apocalyptic world should be, there are still plenty of others to choose from.
I was swept up in Kunstler's vision of a post-apocalyptic America in World Made by Hand: A Novel, and while its been awhile since I read it, I was excited to revisit the story line with _The Witch of Hebron_. While several of the characters from the first novel are part of this story, the focus is primarily on Jerry Copeland's son and his his (mis)adventures. In some respects it is reminiscent of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (a young pre-adolescent boy leaving home and very quickly getting in way over his head in the wide, wold world) - but in this case there is sinister and dangerous aspect to young Jasper Copeland's odyssey.Kunstler also provides some backstory to how the modern world ended and gives depth and complexity to the "new comers" of the New Faith organization. Kunstler's world isn't quite Coramc McCarthy's The Road, but it is a complex and potentially lethal place as well. What I enjoyed - and what keeps me coming back to his storytelling - is the minutae and detail he provides: the way in which life has slowed down with the absence of modern distractions, his eye for ecological detail as nature in all its forms reasserts itself and they generational differences between those who knew the way the world was before things changed so dramatically and those (like young Jasper) who have never known anything different.The epynonomous Witch of Hebron, like the New Fiath sect, also lend an air of the mystical and magical that had been forgotten (or was squeezed to the margins) in the modern age, but like the wild things of the forest and streams is returning as technology has recessed. Young Jasper's journey widens the universe of the first book, but the role of the "Witch" - who she was, who she is and what she does resonated with me as much as Kunstler's vision of the slower and more deliberate way of life that is central to his storytelling. While the conclusion of Japser's story was satisfying, I couldn't help but also see echoes of Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in the way the story of the Witch of Hebron was concluded.I tremendously enjoyed the book, which is perfect fall reading as the days grow short and the weather turns cooler. A recommended read.

About the Author
Robert Davidson was born in London, England in May 1947 and moved to Canada with his wife Heather in 1973. Robert is a Chartered Accountant and Trust and Estate Practitioner and a fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales. He worked with various CA firms in London before joining Price Waterhouse in Toronto. After a 9 year spell as the CFO of a large private company he opened his own tax practice in Markham Ontario, running that until January 2010 when Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis made it impossible to service his clients.Robert founded the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation in late October 2009, just 3 months before his life-saving double lung transplant on January 30, 2010.Robert and his wife live in Markham Ontario. He has two sons. Mark, who also lives in Markham with his wife, Alyshia and new baby daughter Alexis. His other son, Matthew, lives in Neurenberg, Germany where he works with Adidas and is marrying Gemma there in June 2013....

I read this book as my brother, too, was suffering from this horrible disease, (Pulmonary Fibrosis, Familial type) and I had just read the first three chapters, and thought, oh, he needs to read this, too. (as he had been talking about seeking a transplant in the future) So I purchased it, and had it shipped to him. It gave him a lot of hope, and sent him on his way to be tested for a transplant, but alas, it wasn't meant to be, I suppose. He passed away, the same day that he was listed, at UCLA. Thank you Robert for the spark of hope you gave my brother. If only he had been listed much earlier. This disease is the worst possible of all diseases (I think, except for possibly ALS), and has taken away four of our family members. May they all Rest in Peace. Thank you for telling your story, Robert, and I hope your gift of life continues to give you life, for many years to come.
Thank you for writing your story! It helped me to remember, after watching my husband fight this disease for 3 years that's there is still another chapter to be written! One of survival! Life after Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis! I will read this often while we battle on. My husband is a fighter! We find so often doctors almost seem reluctant to give you any hope, they don't seem able to face you either at the same time! It's like not talking about the elephant in the room. We've been told the worst, but no one has really ever talked with us on positive out comes of transplant. Hope even a little, for even a little while is so good to feel! The end stage stuff was very hard to read! We've not walked that journey yet! I pray that maybe a cure or treatment will by the grace of God be available before then. We are hanging on to the hope that we are one of the lucky ones, that this disease will be slow in its progress. I will pray for your good health. Also for the family that gave you the gift of life. May god bless and reward you! He already has!
The book is very informative for old patients, especially those who are preparing for a transplant and those who have had a transplant. A little too much on some personnel issues.
Was helpful in understanding the disease and inspiring to keep living through this disease.while the travel was interesting, I was a little lost in these parts.
As a lung transplant recipient I would have liked to see more detailed info about his journey through the transplant than his his detailed account of his trips. Got confused and thought it was a travel guide.
I would recommend this to other IPF patients. Reading this was scary but gave me something to think about in the future.
got this book for my father who is suffering from the same lung disease.. he liked it but did mention how the main guy talks a lot about his trips to out of country (china.) i asked him and he said he would rate the book 3 stars.
With so little written on IPF, I appreciate learning of the authors journey. A little too much on the vacation details but all in all a good quick read that gives some hope.
