About the Author
Jeff Benner has had a long interest in the Hebrew language of the Bible and in 1996 he began researching the ancient pictographic alphabet used by the Hebrew people and other Semitic tribes. He has made many significant discoveries linking the ancient Hebrew culture with the ancient Hebrew language and alphabet. In 1999 Jeff founded the "Ancient Hebrew Research Center" to research and teach Biblical understanding through the alphabet and language to those with little or no Hebrew background. Jeff's current project is the Ancient Hebrew Lexicon of the Bible. This Lexicon defines Hebrew words of the Bible according to their cultural context revealing the original Hebraic meanings of Biblical passages and words.

Who did he pay for the 5 star ratings? Appears to be just another Jewish guy trying to make an easy buck for junk. Much of it is available from online encyclopedias and he attempted to weave some new theory out of unrelated information. Save your money.
This book on each Hebrew letter which includes the Hebraic thought and the culture brings a full bodied teaching that will lay a great foundation to the study of Hebrew rather than the normal language lessons that others present. If you know how to read Hebrew great! BUT do you know why YAHWEH used this used that particular letter or word? Almost all of us only know what we were told or taught by another. This book delves into the whole Jeff Benner approach on his education center of his website......I am home schooling and we are learning Hebrew through Jeff Benner's books and website modules.....If you are interested in the Torah - even though you might not know Hebrew nor want to learn to read or write it - you will love this book just on the Hebraic thought and culture.
Provides Wonderful Background Information for the Hebrew Language/Alphabet... Benner has done an excellent job of taking his extensive research and condensing it down in to a clear and understandable manner. He seems to have written this as a caring teacher who wants his students to understand and learn. Great Job!!!
Great insights into how the language influenced the written word. I started a Hebrew language class and it started with the ancient history of the aleph-bet. I had a heads up since I had read this book. Also interesting to learn that the Hebrew language is actually written in Aramaic letters, not ancient Hebrew letters. I recommend this book highly.
Jeff Benner is a fantastic writer who breaks down the complexity of language and culture and philosophy into understandable ideas. Love this book and how Benner goes deep into the life of the Hebrew and how it makes sense of understanding the Bible better.
Love it! Too bad Jeff uses the corrupted modern Hebrew though but I still love it anyways. But also Study it out yourselves. The Jewish conjunctions and vowel points are a corruption so they can continue in sin. So be careful but this book is still worth it!
I am happy to recommend this book for the imaginative devotional insights that Mr Benner's knowledge of Hebrew inspires. However, as someone with a PhD in ancient Hebrew and other NW Semitic languages from Yale University, I can say unequivocally that this book has serious methodological flaws and is filled with obvious mistakes and leaps of logic. His book is living testimony that a little knowledge can be dangerous. (There are too many examples of mistakes to cite. If you don't believe me, take as evidence the obscure non-academic publisher, and his own lack of formal training. Amateurs are capable of doing good scholarship; unfortunately, Mr Benner does not show himself up to the task here.)PS: My objections are not religiously motivated; like Mr Benner, I am a Christian. In fact, that is one reason for my writing: so people might not be misled by pseudo-scholarship.
I'm not quite finished with the book, but it is very interesting to see an ancient perspective. The words are a lot like poetry. The pictograph language is controversial, but it does make sense that the Hebrews would use an alphabet like this because Abram, who became Abraham, came from Ur, which was a major city back then and became a nomad. It does help the meaning of words that have been taken out of context and the original thought and intent has been a bit lost. I would recommend this book. I think it will need further research to correlate meanings, but it is a great start into the deeper meaning of words, and the pictures the words create are quite beautiful. The ancient languages were pictoral; Chinese and Egyptian were as well.
Anybody who is remotely interested in ancient Hebrew should own this book. It packs a lot of very useful information into a small package, and it is very inexpensive and gets straight to the point. Buy this book and add it to your collection. :-)

This book reads like a novel. Our troops have been fighting in Afghanistan for so long, yet if feels as if we still no very little about the conduct of the war. This book will help young readers gain a real understanding of the conflict. The story of Ryan Pitts and the incredible bravery he and his platoon put on display is nothing short of amazing. In the story of the Battle of Wanat you see the courage, discipline and sacrifice these men are willing to give without a thought to their own safety. Spradlin had done a marvelous job bringing this story to life.
We read this after reading about Jack C. Montgomery. Another amazing story bought to life by Spradlin. A great introduction and explanation of the Afghan War. And how Ryan Pitts fought so bravely is just incredible. It should be a movie, but no one would probably believe it.

I was going to give this book two stars but then I finished reading the book. In the end Shah sells a deceased neighbor's stamp collection and gives the money he makes from the sale to the neighbor's widow. He also earns the trust and respect of his household caretakers by holding a ceremony to expel Jinn's (evil spirits) from his house in Casablanca, his work as somebody who has escaped drab London complete. Other fun parts of the book are learning about Moroccan craftsmanship, trading practices, religious practices, coffee, and food. Shah observes and reflects and repeats, and reveals himself as a thoughtful person, which I also gleaned from reading his Wikipedia page. He wants the world to be a more peaceful place and works toward that goal.The reason I can't give this book four stars is because it could be about half the length it is. For example, in one sequence late in the book he describes in great detail how he buys cedar wood for construction of his new library. Hemingway is turning over in his grave. The other reason this book can't be higher than three stars is because it is episodic and formulaic. Here is the formula of each episode: Shah wants to do a renovation project in the house, the caretakers tell him it will be difficult because the house is haunted by evil spirits, his other assistant Kamal finds some back alley way to get the job done. Repeat that sequence and you have the book. Also, Shah has this incredibly annoying habit of ending each episode with a cliffhanger quote that is I suppose supposed to be amusing but is in fact irritating because the situations are never that dangerous or worrisome. He tries to build in drama where simple descriptions might do.Lastly, Shah must be a wealthy man. He isn't transparent about how much money is required to buy a house in Casablanca, employ anywhere from four to ten servants, keep up a local school through donations, renovate the house with intricate work, buy a car, and such is, but this is no task that an average person can perform, and as such the book leaves you with the knowledge that as long as you have enough money, life will be secure, albeit at times unpredictable due to the varying levels of dependability of those you interact with. It reminds me a little of the TV show West World in the sense that you pay a ton of money to have a "real" experience in an exotic place while all the normal, non-wealthy people out there have to work through their drab existence from paycheck to paycheck.
A confession: I adore Morocco. It is a place of dreams, beauty and ideas that are foreign and lovely. The food is fresh and fragrant with spices. As a tourist, a people watcher and a scholar, I have studied the place. So when I picked up the Caliph's House, I expected to return to the place of my dreams and spend a week enjoying the book. Instead, I met a new and different Morocco of workers, customs and household djins never before encountered.The story line involves a Londoner of Afghan descent who moves his young family to a rundown but beautiful estate home just outside a bidonville of Casablanca intending to restore the house to its former glory. Work proceeds, or not, based on a complicated system of beliefs and customs that we learn about through a series of work stoppages, destructions and contractors. As it turns out, the house comes with three longtime resident guardians who have much advice that varies as to usefulness and self-servingness. Some of this is laugh out loud funny and some provides deep cultural insights. I knew nothing about djins before reading this book and the author knew nothing about them before writing it. Nonetheless, if you have djins in your toilets or wells, there is hell to pay.This is a beautifully written book replete with cultural context and human concerns. It evokes a powerful sense of place. It is also by turns hilarious and deeply moving. In the end, it is a delightful book that is also insightful about working class Moroccan life.
This book gave a wonderful, entertaining account of moving from London to Casablanca. The obstacles the author encountered provide the reader with a window into life in Casablanca, with all it's checks and balances. Surviving the renovation of The Caliph's House is a nightmare that makes one appreciate the saner, if frustrating issues we western renovator's regularly encounter. Tame by comparison. An interesting, humorous, and enlightening read.
