But Dart does an incredible job getting behind the WHY this is happening. This is the only way to figure out what solutions actually have a chance of working. His framing of the problem and possible solutions are unique in writings on the topic to date. As with New Rules of Retail, his first book, there is a compelling combination of facts, company examples to make it real and interesting, and questions we should all be asking ourselves. It is incredibly well written, also unique for most business books. And if you get a chance to hear him speak live, go.
I read a lot of books about this subject, but this book its much better. They don't repeat the same thing like many books just to fill the pages they need. The authors talk about the present and the future of retail. If you are in the retail business and don't agree with what this book is saying please do your self a favor and close your store. I read it in 3 days and love it.

I loved the book and would highly recomend it to anyone facing modern retail challenges as I do , running a few large scale e-commerce as well as brick-and-mortar classical retail projects.
Great book. Comprehensive characterization of the many fault lines destabilizing the retail sector. Perhaps the largest pressure point is retail companies' imperative to grow facing real declines in consumer demand, causing huge oversupply and drastic discounting. As a strategy consultant to the industry, most of my work now is helping retailers adapt to shrinking market segments. The authors suggest several possible solutions, including my favorite, "liquify". (Read the book to find out what that is!)
With all the changes happening in the retail world--this book provides a clear roadmap to the drivers of these changes, and how businesses can best position themselves to evolve to this new normal. Michael paints a fascinating picture of the new supply and demand model and how we are truly in an era of price deflation. Material purchases are on the decline, so the emphasis on convenience and speedy delivery is increasing. Retailers have a lot to grapple with in this new normal, and this book provides a fascinating behind the scenes look of what is happening, and how this will continue to change the retail industry as we know it.
I read this book like a novel - new insights for me. It WAS my first dive into research to upgrade our school's tired marketing text, but a great start. Two things: Chapters are a bit repetitive, like a research book that you can look up a topic in, read a few pages, cite it, and move on - or read it straight through. I also wonder if things will be as "seismic" as the authors predict. Anyway, a good read for marketing nerds like me.

If you have DocBook markup that you need to turn into html or pdf YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT THIS BOOK! That's right I'm shouting. This book is really that important, and that well written. Do bear in mind that you need to know a thing or two about XSLT and XSL-FO or you won't understand a thing you are reading.The DocBook stylesheets have been carefully written to be both customizable and extensible; after all, no two organizations are likely to have the same format requirements for their documents. This book describes how you can develop your own customization layer between the DocBook stylesheets and your formatted document. Most developers, even those with a lot of time on their hands, would be unlikely to discover all of the techniques described in this book for accomplishing that task.This book is especially useful if you need to produce pdf documents using XSL-FO. The html output is nice but you can easily format it with CSS. XSL-FO is a large and complex specification for marking up text and images to produce pdf documents. XSL-FO is so detailed that it takes a ton of markup to create even a modest document. The DocBook stylesheets generate a ton and a half of XSL-FO markup and the beauty of the techniques described in this book is that you only modify those things that represent the special needs of your document. I totally agree with previous reviewers, this book is essential.
This book MUST be on your bookshelf if you do any work with docbook and use the standard stylesheets. It is true that the contents of the book are fully available online as HTML documents, but that is no substitute for having the printed book in your hands if you need to do extensive work. Bob Stayton covers nearly all aspects of user customization available in the stylesheets from simply setting a few parameter values (which can be done from the command line in most cases) to writing or rewriting templates for extensive user customization.
I purchased that book as soon as it came out: I just knew I'd need it some day. That day came three weeks ago and I got into the book with a vengeance. I needed to utterly customize the docbooks stylesheets and produce 12'000 different pdf's in four languages out of a huge documentation DB. With the book next to me it was a breeze. Extremely well written, knowledgeable, accurate, just verbose enough to get the point across and and and.Beware: this is a book for people who are already very well versed in docbook in general, and in XSL in particular.One does wish the author would have offered ant versions of his scripts as well as Make versions. But that's a matter of taste.
Yes, I know there is another manual but it's more of a starter. This is the book you need to help you figure out how to actually make Docbook work. I keep it by my side (and have advised an intern working in Docbook to do so as well). I guarantee if you get on the Docbook-apps discussion list, and ask a question most times the answer will come out of this book.
This book needs to be beside the computer (and I do mean RIGHT beside) anyone who is attempting to support or modify docbook applications for the first time. Do that, and you may just be able to put away the extra strength excedrin. Without it, you might have a few problems......Here's why:Last year, I had the pleasure of implementing docbook for a large company down in Oklahoma. However, I didn't know much about XSL at the time or for that matter docbook; other than how to markup documents and make changes to the DTD. In other words I was a rookie. I had two tools at my disposal; the definative guide and docbook documentation. Any developer would understand what a rookie who is trying to muddle through docbook documentation is trying to go through..... I had a bit of consulting from Arbortext but other than that I was on my own. The definitive guide has very little information on publishing XML information and barely even mentions XSL. Thus, my modifications consisted of looking at existing code and attempting a patch job. Even with the training I'd had on XSLT it did not help me to find files that I didn't know existed. This book solves that problem and gets you off the ground running.While the book is NOT a tututorial on XSL is does give a brief overview on the subject. This book talks about implementing XSL in a docbook environment as there are plenty of books in the market that teach you how to code XSL. An understanding of XML is expected and knowledge of docbook is certainly helpful. Topics covered include how to find docbooks XSL stylesheets (or obtain them for free, if you don't already have them)and tells you how to set them up, customize them for your environment, use special stylesheet output features and work with docbook options.In short, if you need to learn how to implement XSL in a docbook environment; get this book in your hands and don't let it go. It's too valuable a commodity!

It is structurally a mystery story, but it can be best characterized as a compelling portrait of political violence in contemporary Peru. Mario Vargas Llosa is a captivating story teller and I found myself wanting to know more about the people that inhabit the harsh mountains of Peru."Peru's Indian Peoples and the Challenge of Spanish Conquest - Huamanga to 1640" by Steve J. Stern exactly met my needs. This scholarly text tells the story of how conquest transformed a resilient and vigorous people into an inferior caste of Andean Indians. The geographical focus is a mountainous region in southwest Peru dominated by the city Huamanga (today known as Ayacucho, a city not too distant from the fictional town of Naccos, the setting for Death in the Andes).The lengthy title, "Peru's Indian Peoples and the Challenge of Spanish Conquest - Huamanga to 1640", may be a little intimidating, but the book is well-written and is largely accessible without undue effort. The first chapter paints an intriguing view of a pre-Columbian society based on complex reciprocity relationships between members of extended families or kinships called ayllus. These arrangements allowed dispersed groups to exploit isolated, island-like, ecological niches like cold high mountain pastures or low dry valleys while depending upon others for products grown or created elsewhere.The ethnic groups native to Huamanga welcomed the overthrow of the Incas and allied themselves quickly with the victorious Spaniards. "Local communities sacked warehouses once dedicated to the discredited Incas." Chapter 2 examines the rise and subsequent demise of these post-Incaic alliances with the Spanish.Chapter 3, "A Historical Watershed", describes the revival of Andean religious fervor (the Taki Onqoy) and an unsuccessful effort to expel the Spanish colonizers. Remarkably, the Spanish, under the formidable leadership of Don Francisco de Toledo, within a decade had dramatically revised their colonial structure, and largely eliminated any possibility of future revolt by the Andean Indians.Chapter 4 details the political economy of colonialism in the Huamanga region while chapter 5 investigates the contentious legal battles between the Indians and the colonizing elite under the Spanish judicial system. Both chapters are intriguing, but are more difficult for the non-specialist. I was surprised by how carefully the Spanish structured the taxation system; it siphoned away the maximum wealth without completely devastating the Andean economy. The Indians resisted this economic oppression through evasion as well as by tenaciously exploiting the Spanish legal system to protect their rights.The final three chapters explore the ways in which the Andean Indians gradually adapted to Spanish colonization and how this adaptation fostered a political economy of dependence. Stern devotes chapter 7 to the "tragedy of success", the story of the successful few that escaped the burdens of the peasantry by becoming integrated into the ruling Spanish colonial structure. The final chapter, Huamanga's colonial heritage, admits that much has changed in modern times, but argues that "the present seems to superimpose itself upon the past, not destroy it."

When the Nazis came to power in 1933, Victor Klemperer (1881-1960), honored as a frontline veteran of World War I, was a distinguished professor at the University of Dresden. A scant few months later he was merely a Jew, protected from deportation to a death camp only by his marriage to an Aryan. He suffered every other indignity to which German Jews were subjected, from losing his job to having his driver's license revoked to being denied permission to own a pet, and all are recorded with bitter clarity in his diary entries, which cover the years 1933 to 1941. (A second volume continuing through 1945 will be published in English in 1999.) The German edition of this book caused a sensation when it was published in 1995, and it's easy to see why: the relentless, quotidian nature of Nazi racism comes through forcefully in Klemperer's litany of daily humiliations and insults, a painful chronicle of situations in which readers can readily imagine themselves. In April 1935, Klemperer (1881-1960) was a Protestant professor of French literature at Dresden University and a front-line veteran of WWI. By early May, he was simply a Jew and, like other Jews, forcibly retired. His marriage to an Aryan gave him (precarious) protection, and by 1945, he was one of only 198 registered Jews left in Dresden. Through it all, Klemperer kept a diary (Vol. II, 1942-1945, is due out in 1999) that turns out to be one of the most important to come out of Nazi Germany. While his early entries are filled with work and health, as circumstances worsened his focus turns to the nuances of Nazism's degrading influence. Small acts of kindness and solidarity from Gentiles were surprisingly frequent, yet pervasive isolation and lack of courage left real resistance a fantasy for everyone but the Wends (Catholic Slav peasants) and the Communists (whom Klemperer would later join). Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this book is Klemperer's parallel record of the insidious progress of laws that stripped Jews of their rights and of the propaganda and censorship that stripped the Germans of their judgment. But through it all, Klemperer maintained his "commitment to Germanness," making his account more akin to the complexities recorded in Peter Gay's recent My German Question than Daniel Goldhagen's simplistic Hitler's Willing Executioners. The diaries weren't intended for publicationAthey are in part a m?lange of notes for a study of Nazi manipulation of language and jottings regarding quotidian concerns about Klemperer's teeth, the cat's health or the price of supplies. This catch-all quality adds veracity to Klemperer's shrewd understanding of Germany's nightmarish decline, however, evincing the kind of clarity that usually comes with hindsight. Extremely depressing and more visceral look at the Nazi occupation of Europe. Grittier, darker, and more personal than the Anne Frank diaries. It's terribly sad because, as the reader, we all know how it's going to end, but Victor doesn't. Reading about his horror, month after month, as the Nazis continue their reign of brutal genocidal hate, his reactions are gut wrenching as he details how friends, family, and colleagues are taken by the SS.They even take Victors cat, as 'true aryan cats have no business with The Jew.'Don't read it before bed.
These two volumes comprise a remarkable book, both as a historical document and as a compelling, humane account of the experience of living in Germany during the Nazi years. Klemperer has indeed "witnessed," not only by providing a telling, bottom-up history of the period and place, but particularly by showing how individuals of all kinds struggle with accommodation, resistance and simple survival under a murderous, totalitarian regime.There are numerous, detailed reviews of the particulars, so I won't add to them, beyond saying: If you want to better understand the history of the period, and also approach an appreciation of human coping in such circumstances, I have not read a more compelling account and highly recommend Klemperer's diaries.
Having read many books on the Third Reich, this one details the personal life of a Jew in Nazi Germany. His personal struggles mixed with the ongoing edicts of the Nazi race policies, laws and sudden oppressive rules that continued to close in the walls of those that were Jews and at times even the Christians. Amazing Victor Klemperer's work survived. As I was reading and living his experiences with him, I came to know him... and realized how easily it could have been me.
This is an extraordinary first-person account of daily life in the Third Reich from the years 1933-1941. Written by Victor Klemperer, a Jewish convert who lived through the entire Hitler period in Germany and whose life was apparently spared because his wife was "Aryan," the diary reveals the petty inconveniences, the fear, and the constant humiliations that were the everyday experiences of the author and his wife. The diary is a portrait of Nazi Germany written from the inside out, and in that sense is unlike any book I have ever read on this subject.
I couldn't put this book down. It is such a vivid and realistic account of a highly educated professor surviving in Germany during the Third Reich. He, a nonobservant Jew who has converted to Protestantism even before the war, is humiliated and demeaned by the Nazis. They even take his typewriter away. Fortunately, his wife is "Aryan," and she helps him through some rough spots. I was impressed by his ability to persevere in spite of all the oppression and horror of it all. Am anxious to read the next volume!
This is a day-to-day account of the horrors of living as a Jew in Nazi Germany--the daily insults in the press, on the streets, through the laws that daily require more restrictions, more penalties, more taxes, more debasement. This is only the first part of the enormous record Klemperer kept, and it ends, dramatically, right after America has entered the war. While the other Jews in the "Jews' House" in which Klemperer and his wife have been forced to live express dismay at this new development, fearing it will only drag out the war to Hitler's benefit, he writes that it might be a very good thing. "Adding weight to the clock makes it wind down faster."Everyone should read this absorbing, harrowing, sometimes nit-picky and on rare occasions petty (after all Klemperer is eminently human) but always astonishing account.
Excellent reading, Victor Klemperer's book, I Will Bear Witness. Rates up there with Anne Frank's diary. It is an amazement to read his thoughts and daily trials whilst we, the readers, know the outcome... but at the time Mr. Klemperer was submitting his daily life to his diary, he did not know how his life and Germany were going to end. As each law passed he had his home taken from him, his car, his clothes became ragged without recourse to replacing them. Food rations were constantly lowered and taxes levied. A very touching and interesting read.

When I walked into Barnes & Noble two weeks ago, I wasn't actually looking to purchase a book. Usually, I go in, browse for 30 minutes, and get out. But when I walked around to the Physics and Science section, the first thing I saw was Elon Musk's face.Inevitably, I picked it up and began reading.2 pages in, I decided I was in this for the long haul and sat on the floor, right there in the middle of the store. 15 pages in, my friends finally found me and forced me to leave. But I couldn't part with this. I needed this book. Those first 15 pages captured me like so few books do (in fact, only one book in the past year has totally stolen my attention like this).So I bought Elon Musk feeling on top of the world and excited to keep reading.I travel a lot between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, PA, so, since I'm in the middle of taking classes in Pittsburgh, I swore to only read this book on the bus, because I knew once I picked it up again, I wouldn't put down.I was right.The next day, I got on the bus, got to reading, and tuned out the world. Three hours later, I was nearly halfway through -- and WOW. Vance's writing style flowed right through my mind. No clunky sentences, no jarring phrases. It's such an easy book to read, despite the complex nature of the contents.Elon Musk, if you don't know, is a biography. Yes, a biography. You'd expect the case-study of someone's life to be boring and uneventful, dragging until the very end.This wasn't the case at all.Vance opens the book at an interview with Elon Musk himself. The first line, a quote from Musk, "Do you think I'm insane?", perfectly captures the whole context of the biography. Because as you experience the story, as you see the challenges Musk went through to reach the pinnacle he's at today, the question nags at you. Musk isn't soft-spoken, or easy on his employees, or a man who kicks his legs up on his desk and snoozes while his companies mill around him. Vance shows how Musk is both the CEO and an employee of his companies, simultaneously the teacher and student. He gets in the work, asks all the right questions, gives all the right orders. His vision is THE vision, and if you get in the way, Musk has been known to fire you on the spot.Musk breaks every convention, every tradition, every standard. Vance takes you deep into the details, from Musk's childhood and lineage in South Africa, all the way to Canada and the United States, where the bulk of the story unfolds.When Musk looks at big businesses, he sees unmovable behemoths that refuse to change their methodologies. American innovation became a thing of the past. Technology and industry was growing - but nowhere near as fast as it should. So we follow Musk's journey from his small start-ups, Zip2 and X.com, and move into his larger, more permanent ventures, namely SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity.I myself am a huge fan of Elon Musk. Still, until the past year or two, I only thought of him as "that guy who made SpaceX" and "that guy who runs Tesla." Until reading this book, I never knew the struggle -- no, the hell he went through to make and keep these companies. You think, oh, he just has a lot of money.Yeah, now he does. But did you know SpaceX and Tesla were hours away from going bankrupt? Did you know that the Falcon 1 rocket kept failing, and one more failed launch literally meant the end of SpaceX? Did you know SpaceX tested these rockets on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and would fix problems they encountered in a matter of days, as compared to months by standard companies?This book is the first time Musk has explicitly let anyone interview him for a biography. Aside from a few questionable quotes that have been publicly denounced by Musk after the publication of this book, we're still given a tremendous amount of insight into his head and how he runs the companies. Vance interviewed more than 300 people and spent over two years compiling this account. And I have to give credit to how up-to-date the information is. There are several events Vance mentions that occurred into 2015, such as the first landing attempt of Falcon 9 on the sea barge, which took place in January, and he refers to the second attempt as being in a couple weeks, which means that Vance included this information on a very tight deadline, probably mid-March (the second landing attempt happened on April 14, 2015).I want to congratulate you, Mr. Vance. Well done. Very well done. I'm going to reread this book in a few weeks (probably after the scheduled June 19th third Falcon 9 landing attempt, this time on solid ground, as opposed to a barge). Anyone who wants a ridiculously thorough insight into Elon Musk's life and companies should read this book. It had me from Page 1 all the way to Page 363, and even the appendices that come after.This is an incredibly inspiring book, a important look into a game-changing business strategy, and a valuable lesson to the world. As Musk says, "If something is important enough, even if the odds are against you, you should still do it."
One of the most inspiring books I have ever read. A few life changing points for me:1) First intro chapter shows how relentless the author was. Great lesson there. He didn't ask for permission, he just went out and wrote it. Said he was going to write it with or without him on board. Which ultimately won Elon's respect since that's how he operates too.2) Elon and his brother Kimbal coming over at 18 years old from south Africa. Their tactic about picking up the newspaper and cold calling the most interesting people to take to lunch is awesome. I challenge myself to do this now and I think its a great strategy to get out of your comfort zone. I gather he had the idea for pay pal with that tactic - it landed him the bank internship where he discovered the inefficiencies of banking world.3) Elon has no "fear" button. Inhuman ability to withstand massive risks, pressure, and family drama all at once.4) I bought 20 books. That's how much I loved it. Would call up and take a "mad scientist" or business investor or tesla owner For coffee/lunch/networking and tell them about how great this book is and see what crazy ideas they had brewing as well. Started connecting them together and meeting all kinds of moonshot thinkers. Great Networking Icebreaker.5) Requested a tesla charging station be installed at my place of work because well...we need to encourage more telsas around here and If Elon stops by we will be ready.6) Googled Justine found her Ted talk she did about him And enjoyed Elons commencement speech too. 7) Started an interest in this whole solar idea, Bought a solar cell phone charger that will be a gateway into way Into it and go from there. Tours of people that have solar homes in the area.8) Most ambitious dude ever with this whole Mars thing.9) After you read this book you will never again complain about being busy.10) I didn't realize Larry Page and Elon were so close. Hope he is wrong about the AI thing though, but also triggered me to buy the book "the singularity is near"I love the impact of the cover and I write a favorite quote in and give as a gift of inspiration to innovators in the area.
I've been inspired by Elon Musk for a while. His accomplishments are legendary and I wanted to know more about the men behind them. This book doesn't disappoint. We see both the amazing drive and unstoppable vision as well as the ongoing challenges Musk has had working with people who are inevitably either not as smart, but as driven or more likely, both. Few had the fortitude to stick with him and the ones that do are fiercely loyal.What I love most about Elon's story is how powerfully he deals with every obstacle thrown into his path. Literally nothing could stop him. Not looming bankruptcy or bad press or any of dozens of other issues that would have stopped most of us. I hope to find 5% of that drive in myself after reading this book.
This book has made me one highly motivated aerospace engineering student and given me some great insight into what it would be like should I ever get hired at SpaceX.

It's Lederer. What can I say that I haven't already said? So good for learning about the English language at any age, including teenage.
Author and prolific punster Richard Lederer was once asked which of his own works was his personal favorite, and the answer was The Miracle of Language, in which the reader is treated to a collection of fascinating and enlightening essays. Dr. Lederer celebrates language as "incomparably the finest of our achievements" and passes along some eloquent testimony on the emancipating power of language in the lives of such people as Helen Keller, Richard Wright, Malcolm X, Anne Frank.The author identifies William Shakespeare as the most prolific word-maker who ever lived, a man credited with the first use of over 1,700 words, nearly eight percent of the different words that he used in his writing. Next is Samuel Johnson who, with his breakthrough dictionary, captured the majesty of English and gave it a dignity long overdue. Others include writers such as Ambrose Bierce, Lewis Carroll, Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, T. S. Eliot, and George Orwell. There's a chapter on the beauty of using short words, that rounds out this a delightful and and highly edifying collection."A large vocabulary is a great predictor of success, according to the Johnson O'Connor studies and others. I believe that it is also one sign of certain kind of intelligences. It's a matter of simple math. The more words you have, the better you can describe and live in this world. As Holmes said, 'Language is the skin of living thought.'"But Lederer is also no dry author, for there's an amazing amount of humor in many if his works. His interests include uncovering word origins, pointing out common grammatical errors and fallacies, and exploring palindromes, anagrams, and other forms of recreational wordplay.While attending Haverford College as a pre-med student years ago, Lederer soon discovered that he was more interested in language, and he switched his major to English, which was a good things for all of us. Going on to Harvard Law School, he discovered that he was even more interested in the language itself than in the law cases which he was reading. He switched to a Master of Arts and Teaching program at Harvard, and that lead to a teaching career in Concord, New Hampshire.Lederer earned a Ph.D in English and Linguistics at the University of New Hampshire, and was inspired to write books on language, starting with Anguished English: An Anthology of Accidental Assaults Upon Our Language. This was followed by More Anguished English, and then by Fractured English.The popularity of these book and and the subsequent titles motivated him to leave his teaching position and pursue further writing and speaking opportunities... and we gained from reading his books on word play, language bloopers, puns and his frequent use of the oxymoron. Dr. Lederer is known as a "verbivore," a word that he coined in the 1980s. His interests include pointing out common grammatical errors and fallacies, uncovering word origins, and exploring palindromes, anagrams, and other forms of recreational wordplay. On top of that, he was Punster of the Year (P.O.T.Y.) in 1989.A few year ago he wrote The Cunning Linguist, a book in which he shows us the naughtier side of wordplay, revealing hundreds of hilarious, ingenious, unabashed, and adults-only puns, jokes, limericks, one-liners, and other adventures in humor. As the author says, this book is "300 pages of good, clean, dirty word play for appreciative punographers." I had to fully agree in my review of this book.More recently, author Lederer has released Amazing Words: An Alphabetical Anthology of Alluring, Astonishing, Beguiling, Bewitching, Enchanting, Enthralling, Mesmerizing, Miraculous, Tantalizing, Tempting, and Transfixing Words. Wordsmiths of all ages will appreciate what they find here, despite the author's hippopotomonstrosesquipedalian title (the word is in the book), which is made up of nineteen words and 166 characters. For this reader, it's another that has been added to my personal favorites.The Miracle of Language is one of those books that has had a special place on my bookshelf for years. My original copy was replaced some years ago, and even that copy is getting a bit dog-eared from frequent use. Next time I'll probably have to get The Miracle of Language: Kindle Edition so that it never gets lost.10/20/2012

Who knew that the English language could be so interesting?
My daughter brought home a copy of this book, and during her visit, we talked about it and language in general. The author is brilliant and funny. We ended up reading more of his books, and books about language all through the summer. With her in Texas, and me in central PA, we've had many discussions about local speech. It's been a fun addition to our relationship.
It was what I expected the book to deliver.
Useless. A waste of money. So overly dramatic, it's like reading a love story that never ends, without any complete characters. Just wish it had gotten straight to the point and gave instructions on how to use language to bring words and writing craft to life. If I didn't pay next to nothing for it, I would've sent it back. But for a penny, I'll keep it and let it take up shelf space. I hate I wasted the shipping and handling costs.
Excellent 101 book! I highly recommend it to anyone fascinated with the mystery of communication. It is a memorial to the vicissitudes of symbolic consciousness.
