Amazon.com Review
I consider myself an open-minded person, but I tend to become itchy and skeptical when I encounter most books about the "unexplained"--there are just too many secret Soviet laboratories, mysterious disappearances (of the phenomena, and the investigators and data for that matter). And, I must admit, I've was somewhat skeptical of Sheldrake's previous books on "morphic resonance". But being an open-minded person, I am glad when I can change my mind, and I am glad to report that this is a worthy book--because of its practicality. Sheldrake confronts some of the outstanding questions facing "PSIence"--and proposes level-headed experiments that readers themselves can become engaged in. Science has often made its greatest advances not when areas of the unknown were summarily dismissed--but when a proper balance between paradigm shifts and experimentation fell into place. It is conceivable that books such as this may help with the evolution of PSI to science.

Some books are written just because everyone feels they too can write a book; this is one of them.
Great book! It will open up the eyes of many people I hope.
The book pages were slightly damaged as if thrown into a box with other books which gouged the edges.Sheldrake's book describes experiments with no cost or low cost which reveal unexplained aspects of consciousness.
must read
Astounding!!!
Rupert Sheldrake (born 1942) is an English biochemist and plant physiologist who has also written or co-written books such as A New Science of Life: The Hypothesis of Morphic Resonance,The Presence of the Past: Morphic Resonance and the Habits of Nature,Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home: Fully Updated and Revised,The Physics of Angels: Exploring the Realm Where Science and Spirit Meet.Natural Grace: Dialogues on creation, darkness, and the soul in spirituality and science, etc.He wrote in the Preface to this 1995 book, "The idea of writing the present book arose ... (when) I was asked what I would do if I ... wanted to support interesting and productive research with limited resources. My answer was to draw up a list of simple, low-cost experiments that could change the world, and then to encourage this research program... I finally selected the seven in this book. So, this is not just a book, but a broad-based research program, with an open invitation to participate."Here are some additional quotations from the book:"Committed Skeptics tend to equate the mechanistic worldview with reason itself and are passionate in its defense. They are scientific fundamentalists." (Pg. 24)"So although the prospects for this line of research (Kirlian Auras) are not too hopeful, it might be worth a few more tries." (Pg. 157)"Organized groups of Skeptics, such as CSICOP... are always ready to challenge results that do not fit into the mechanistic worldview, and try their best to discredit them. Parapsychologists are so accumstomed to these critical responses that they are unusually aware of the pitfalls of experimenter effects and other sources of bias. But conventional science is not subject to a similar degree of skeptical scrutiny." (Pg. 172-173)"Many scientists carry out experiments with strong expectations about the outcome, and with deep-rooted assumptions about what is and what is not possible. Can their expectations influence their results? The answer is yes." (Pg. 210)"I cannot foresee the outcome of the experiments proposed here, but I think there is a good chance that at least some of them will yield very interesting results. I would not have written this book otherwise." (Pg. 244)
I picked up this volume because its title suggested that it would encourage hands-on science activities that are essential to good teaching and effective learning. Unfortunately, I discovered on reading it that the author combines a deep antagonism for the scientific "establishment" with credulity for numerous fringe ideas. The first experiment that he suggests tests the hypothesis that your pet uses psychic powers to tell when you'll be home for dinner! Sheldrake frequently presents anecdotes as "evidence". The "do it yourself" promise of the title is broken for the reader who doesn't intend to begin raising homing pidgeons or doesn't happen to work in a laboratory capable of measuring the physical constants (such as the speed of light) to nine significant figures. Far too few cautions about the pitfalls of psychic research are given (in chapters about the feeling of being stared at, or "feeling" the touch of a severed limb). Despite the nearly fatal flaws of the book, I liked a part of its message, that important science can still be done by amateurs. That's about the only aspect of this book that is commendable.
Neither a skeptic nor a believer in science, the author was searching for an opponent to box with -- more like friendly sparring. His theory of morphic resonance states that all matter and energy is governed or shaped by some sort of evolutionary habit or cumulative memory. If his perspective were broader he would fit in with David Bohm and other science mystics, but Rupert chose to fence himself in the "little science" surrounding pet dogs, homing pigeons, migrating birds, termite colonies, phantom limbs, evil eyes, and the placebo effect. Why Rupert thinks that clearcut experimental results in these areas of anecdotal, imaginative tall tales would support his morphic field theory, I haven't a clue. What is more likely is that these animals and insects have the hidden ability to detect Gaia's gravitational curved space (much like air and ship LORAN navigators read lines of position). The author was forever hinting that chaos theory, Jung's collective unconscious or other ideas would someday reveal the whole story without telling what that would gain us (for instance, if we accepted that the fundamental constants were slightly variable). Although I would encourage new viewpoints such as morphic fields to shape the matter of the universe, I was left with the impression that this writer bit off way more than his dog could chew.

From Publishers Weekly
Johnson painstakingly details the last 18 months of the Cold War–era fast-attack nuclear submarine U.S.S. Scorpion, which disappeared with all hands on May 22, 1968, in the mid-Atlantic. Commissioned in 1960, the Scorpion tested nuclear sub warfare tactics in exercises around the world until its final voyage following four months of duty with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. When the ship didn't emerge at its homeport of Norfolk, Va., on its scheduled arrival date of May 27, 1968, the navy launched its largest search in U.S. naval history and reported the ship and its 99 crewmen officially dead on June 5. Four months later, the navy located pieces of the ship's hull in more than 10,000 feet of water. Further investigations came to no definitive conclusion about what caused the demise of the Scorpion. Was it a Soviet attack? Did one of the Scorpion's torpedoes accidentally detonate? Did its hull crack due to poor maintenance? Did its main storage battery explode? Mining navy documents and first-person testimony, Johnson's deeply researched effort explores these and other possible explanations, but concludes that the ship's end will remain an enigma. (Jan.) From Booklist
On February15, 1968, nuclear attack submarine USS Scorpion left Norfolk, Virginia. On May 22, 1968, the Scorpion, with 99 men aboard, was lost in the Atlantic. After 37 years, a court of inquiry, and three undersea investigations--the latter two headed by Dr. Robert Ballard, best known for his discovery of the Titanic--why the sub sank has not been determined. Johnson offers a very readable account of the very tragic mystery, complete with sketches of crew members and a well--delineated picture of the naval and submarine culture of that time. While he describes the evidence generated by all three investigations, the question of what caused the Scorpion to implode and smash with such force on the floor of the Atlantic is still a controversy. Mr. Johnson's "Silent Steel" deserves an extra star, but I had to highlight just five that showed up. I have been involved with this tragedy, this mysterious saga, since day one. That all began when I received, as a radiomen stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (at that time) the distress call from "Brandywine," SSN 589. I heard those faint, garbled calls three, perhaps four times, and worked the circuit for the next two hours, hearing nothing more. Since then, and knowing what happened, in part knowing, I have lived with the ghosts of these 99 men on eternal patrol. Reading "Silent Steel" somehow gave me closure, but I don't know how to explain this comment. It just did. Mr. Johnson writes an intelligent, thoughtful, and very sensitive account, if not outrageous in some ways due to the failure, in my view, of entire Navy Department that should have taken better care of its attack sub force, especially the USS Scorpion that was long overdue for an overhaul. I have the other tomes on this tragedy, indeed wrote my own yarn, but none compare to the erudite handling of the myriad details one reads in "Silent Steel." He can't tell us what caused the sinking of the Scorpion, then again no one can. There are many theories, but it's just too much drama, too much speculation, and certainly insensitive in some ways. Sure, we played 'tag' with the Ruskies in those years, their boats or our boats playing dangerous interference games, but to think, as one book's author attests, a Soviet helicopter killed the Scorpion with an ASW torpedo and we did nothing about it. . .that, folks, is a huge yarn. And Dr. Craven's theory espoused in "Blind Man's Bluff" of the Scorpion destroyed itself with one of its own torpedos, possibly an MK-37. . .hugely nonsense. The fact is something went terribly wrong onboard the Scorpion, perhaps the entire battery sector exploded, which set up a domino effect that could not be stopped. Mr. Johnson merely sites the many systems and mechanical problems that plagued the Scorpion even before its final deployment to the Med in 1968. He doesn't presume to say any more. What he does say, however, is what we have never been told before, especially the families and friends of the USS Scorpion's crew: there were potential killer problems on that boat, and it all happened inside the hull, and not from somewhere beyond. So thank you, Mr. Johnson, for an excellent read and take on this story that seems never to go away. You have told the story the best way possible. There may also be no final verdict as to what caused the Scorpion's final dive, yet somehow there is closure for the boat and her stalwart crew. As a thought, you are all inextinguishable, indestructible. Dream other dreams, and better. RK Alleman
Well researched, well written and well edited. Thankfully absent some of the excess dramatics of Blind Man's Bluff. Much of the book focuses on the search for the submarine and then the search for the cause among competing theories. One thing that's clear is that the Scorpion suffered from both design and maintenance problems in the midst of a critical period of the Cold War. The Navy had lost control of the construction and maintenance operations of its attack submarines. Vboney in Dark Waters provides some much stronger insights near the end of his book when he is working at Electric Boat. Thanks to management deficiencies and very militant unions the work on the submarines lacks planning and management is is performed in a very inefficient manner thanks to union rules. both the cost and time budgets are consumed without fully preparing the boats for their difficult missions.Silent Steel notes the problems but not the cause. While the subs are desperately needed at sea and need better maintenance to operate effectively and safely they are receiving less maintenance and repair due to the inefficiencies ashore. At some point you simply run out of luck and deferred maintenance takes a toll on airplanes and ships. From the author's accounts the Scorpion was plagued with problems relating to its critical hydraulic and cooling systems in addition to a variety of other issues including a shaking like vibration. The inability to obtain quality construction or repairs lead to the deferral of completion of critical safety work that had been mandated after the loss of the Thresher. The alternative to longer time in the shipyards and higher costs, both of which were unacceptable was to put the ships to sea with problems and deferred work and depend on the crews to keep them going. It's a timeless recipe for disaster and for new operating procedures, written the the cold blood of those who were lost to gain the wisdom. In the long run the overall cost was probably higher than to have done it right the first time. Perhaps part of the problem is that for political or other reasons the Navy just tried to push too much work through too few shipyards. Another nuclear shipyard located in a different area might have provided some much needed competition to both the Electric Boat Company and their unions. However, it's easy to be a Monday Morning Quarterback.Within the tragic story is the highly successful story of how the submarine was located and surveyed over a number of years. It is a triumph of engineering, leadership and achievement spread across many commands. The book would be highly recommended for these sections alone, but there is more.In the end the author presents the evidence and leaves the reader to either accept the Navy's official explanation or embrace the position of Craven or others.Overall a very good book and highly recommended. Lots of interesting photos.

Tana French takes on the fraught atmosphere of a girls' boarding school in the leafy suburbs of Dublin in her fifth entry in the Dublin Murder Squad series. As with the earlier books in the series, this one features a different detective but one that we have met before in an earlier book, Faithful Place, and it includes other characters that we've met before, as well as a new female detective in the Murder Squad, Antoinette Conway. The detective that we met before is Stephen Moran, who, when we encounter him this time, is working Cold Cases. He is contacted by Holly Mackey, Undercover chief Frank Mackey's daughter, who has information about a murder that took place a year before.Moran met Holly when she was a nine-year-old and he and his partner were investigating a murder in Faithful Place, where Frank Mackey grew up. Holly is now a 16-year-old and she is attending St. Kilda's School. She is part of a tight-knit group of four girls. The previous year, a handsome, popular young man from the boys' boarding school next door was killed on St. Kilda's property. His murder was investigated by Antoinette Conway and her partner but they never solved it. Now, Holly brings Stephen a card that she found posted on the school's board called "The Secret Place" where students can post things anonymously. It features a picture of the boy who was killed with the caption, "I know who killed him."Detective Moran takes the card to the Murder Squad and meets with Detective Conway. She asks him to work with her (she no longer has a partner) and be a fresh pair of eyes on the case to investigate. The two head out to the school to interrogate students once again. The rest of the action in the book takes place on this one single day with flashbacks to the events of the year before. Most of the investigation is focused on Holly and her three friends and a rival group of four girls. The rival group is the popular clique in the school and Holly and her friends are considered the "freaks."Recreating the world of teenage girls and their relationships, filled with insecurities, envy, raging hormones, and occasional cruelties must have been a daunting task for French. To accomplish it, she immerses us in teenspeak replete with "OMGs," "awesomesauce," "totes amazeballs," "hello?" at the end of sarcastic statements, and every sentence seems to end with a rising inflection of a question like the stereotypical Valley Girl. Considering the rich inner lives that these girls had, the use of such trite and cliched language was a bit jarring and sometimes downright irritating.Another thing that irritated me even more about the book was the supernatural aspect to it - the telekinetic powers that some of the girls supposedly had and the appearance of ghosts, none of which really seemed to have a point or to add anything to the plot. The ghosts might be explained by mass hysteria induced in suggestible young people, but still...The plot was an interesting one. It followed the pattern of French's previous books in that it started ever so slowly and built tension and suspense throughout. I also liked the characters. Conway and Moran made an intriguing team. I wonder if we'll see them again. Holly and her group were a captivating group of teenagers and their relationships with their rivals and with the boys from the neighboring school made for some riveting reading. And in the latter part of the book, we again get to observe Frank Mackey do his thing which is always diverting. But.But there was just something missing here. It wasn't really up to the high standard that French has set for herself. My initial thought was to award the book three or three-and-a-half stars, but since I don't usually do things by halves and since I am such a generous soul, I decided on four.
This is the first novel I've read by Tana French, and I loved it! Though crime fiction/thrillers aren't a genre I've read extensively in my reading career, this is one of the best ones I have read. (Dark Places by Flynn is another one of my favorites.) In previous crime fiction type novels I have read, it felt like a drag reading the interviews of suspects and waiting for them to figure it out, but I was really stumped the whole time during this novel and wanted to keep reading to find out the truth. French does this intricately by weaving a story that is difficult to put together when none of the teen girls will talk. The concept of friendship in the novel is authentic: teenage girls feel like friends are everything, and sometimes they will do anything to protect their best friends. I laughed at the dialogue between the friends and between teenagers and parents because it was so realistic and I could imagine them saying those things with the inflection that French wrote it with. The girls are sassy and brutally honest (not about everything), which made the dialogue really authentic for me.I don't know that the girls in the novel would honestly avoid talking about such a big elephant in the room like they did in the story, but there are definitely always secrets in friend groups, and I think French highlighted that appropriately and realistically. I felt for Selena's heartbreak, but again, I thought it was unlikely (as did the detectives) that her friends would do nothing to comfort her.I didn't understand some of the supernatural things in the story like the thing with the lights and Chris's ghost, but those things seemed to play out and fit in the story in the end, so I appreciated the closure.French created memorable characters across the board--detectives to teenagers. The plot kept me reading, and it was surprising to me to find out the truth when all the stories were untangled.
Because I so liked French's other books, I looked forward to this one. Imagine my surprise when about halfway through, I found myself thinking, "This is truly boring," and fighting the impulse to skip ahead to the ending just to get it over with. The story, which not only alternates between the points of view of the police and two groups of adolescent girls in the claustrophobic, mean-girl world of a boarding school but also between chronological markers, is cleverly structured. Essentially, the police investigation takes place over the course of a single day, but the section involving the girls, and the crime, arcs across many months. French is skillful in making the past collide with the present. But in the end, I found it hard to sustain an interest. Two things struck me as particularly distracting: The introduction of the paranormal--as a strategy by the murder police and as a type of power by some of the girls--didn't seem to me to move the story along. Rather, it made me think more than once, "Oh, come on!" The other distraction was the language used to describe the ways adolescent girls experience themselves and the world--another kind of mystical "we are as blooming flowers shot through with sparks of lightning" thing. While French does a good job evoking the often-chaotic interior world of young girls, she does way too much of it in this book.If The Secret Place was the first French book I'd read, I would never read another. But since I've been reading her work from the beginning, I can hope that this was an aberration, and that her next one will be better--more tightly written, more deeply drawn characters (and with every use of the word "totes" edited out!).

I have the box set and while this is a good story, the three together in the order of the box set makes it a little hard to follow. Each book follows a certain character in the books, but they do not flow smoothly. It takes a few chapter in each book to figure out where your at. Good books though once you get past the confusion of where you're at.
I read the first story and was disappointed that it was a cliffhanger. Later I found the box set on sale and I am glad I purchased it. I read all three stories in a single night because they were excellent. When do we find out if there is a hea for Slider and Sally?
Have greatly enjoyed reading these books over again since released in the box set. Worth the read, wether it’s the first or second time around.
