Phil does it again. I haven't read one book by this author that I haven't thought was excellent and thought provoking and this one doesn't disappoint.I know absolutely nothing about lawn and landscape care, about pesticides, about plants, and gardening, in fact, I've killed several cacti in my life. All of my friends would leave their kids or pets with me as they know I would take care of them and protect them as if they were my own, but not one friend or family member would leave me to water or care for their plants. I'd end up killing them. For real.My HOA is very strict about aesthetics to the point that we have a special committee running it that patrols the neighborhood looking for infractions. I understand the want, the need, to have residents understand that they can't paint their houses purple or black or pepto-pink, but I think they go a little far with how controlling they are about every aspect of our yards. They even gave me a notice because I had an invisible dog fence put in without getting pre-approval which, apparently, they wouldn't have approved. Did anyone catch that it's an invisible fence? They turned another resident down before we moved into the neighborhood a few years ago. We like our dog Buddy to have the freedom to roam our yard at his leisure and putting up an actual fence we knew for sure was not an option as they are verboten (forbidden in German).Anyhow, Phil points out lots of interesting things, things I never even thought about. I can tell you that I think that my lawn company mowing my lawn every single Thursday for the majority of the year is not necessary. It's the equivalent of a man getting a haircut every other week. You can do it, but it's totally unnecessary. I think I'll have to talk to my landscape company.Now I don't have the properly that Phil has where he can have a permaculture farm and I do have an HOA and if I want to live here in relative peace, I have to pick my battles, but there are things I can do and I will look into implementing what I can.Read the book, you'll learn a lot.If you want to read thought provoking, interesting fiction books and one other non-fiction book, read Phil's other books. He's a very insightful, interesting and intelligent guy and it shows in his writing. Check out his author page and get started on one of his books. You'll be glad you did.Enjoy!

WilliamsHave read other works by this author and he tells you like it is, have loved his works.This is about how to make a yard that will not depend on crucial items because the plants themselves can produce things your yard will need.Love the indepth pars of how the lawn companies are telling you their expert advice even when they know your contract with them will be eternal business for them.Especially like the review at the end of every chapter-the high points. There are also footnotes if you want to do further research.What a treasure this book is, love also the parts where it tells you what plants to grow for what you hope to alleviate, like certain pests, etc.Life and living should not be this hard.

Through ages we were shaped to think and do in a certain way. The end result is a homogenous culture, rules and ways of living and even gardening. In the process we have become poor people. We lost our knowledge. We make similar gardens, poisen the earth and buy all our food. We lost contact with mother earth. We lost our ability to independant thinking and we created rules so that everyone is oblidged to live the same way. Phil shows us in this book that there is an alternative way. That by stop using pesticides and by more careful choosing your plants, you can even be more or less self sufficient. That is, if the HOA will allow you. It was an interesting journey into the word of permaculture and I admit that there is a lot more to learn before I will be able to follow his rules. Even without HOA's in South Africa and notwithstanding the fact that I share his believe in the dangers of pesticides, we still have a long way to go in a journey of self sufficiency. I have now read several of Phil's books and his writing style and interesting topics urged me to seek him out as a favourite writer and look out for his books.

I listened to Fire the Landscaper as an audiobook on the author's podcast at foodproduction101.com where he read it for listeners. It was such a good read (or listen) that I came over to Amazon and bought a copy of the ebook to support the author's efforts. Phil walks the reader through his personal journey from cutting lawns to a multimillion dollar landscaping business poisoning the land to permaculturist healing the land. He also chronicles the tyranny of local governments and HOAs in telling property owners what they can and can't do on their own land while using fines and the threat of force and violence to make the property owners comply with what government politicians and bureaucrats want. Give it a read and checkout the author's podcast and website for more great content.

Several years ago, I started pinning and liking what spoke to my soul, and quickly learned about urban homesteading, radical gardening and permaculture. Permaculture, like every radical idea, has those who are those who oppose it simply because they don't understand it and it challenges the status quo. Mr. Williams' book illustrates the mindset of these people and just how dangerous it could be to have them in low-level but powerful positions, such as on a hoa board. Informative, fun read on how property-owners' fundamental rights to use their own land to grow food is being infringed by quasi-government entities.

All I can say is wow. Just wow. Although FtL reads like a beginners guild on WHY polycultures / permaculture are important, I've learned an incredible amount, things I thought I'd already grasped. I wish I had a photographic memory, so that I could share these truths with the hubs and talk him into creating an ecosystem here in our 1/4 acre suburbia lot that is only months away from a landscape design!Mr. Williams had me in tears a few time with his rich descriptions, story telling, and simplistic revelations of truth to a simpler, richer way of living. A definite MUST READ for everyone - and I mean everyone.

The tenth volume of the Short Cuts series from Wallflower Press is the most narrowly focused and the most modest in intention. John Gibbs claims his task is "...less about saying something new, and more of bringing together in the same place, some of the ways in which mise-en-scene criticism has been brought about and put to use." Gibbs succeeds, offering a good introduction to practical mise-en-scene analysis and a detailed, even affectionate, history of mise-en-scene criticism. The major topics are definitions of mise-en-scene elements ("the contents of the frame and the way they are organized"), how these elements interact to create meaning, the history of Anglo-American mise-en-scene criticism and its relationship to the auteur theory, and the distinctive role of mise-en-scene in film melodrama. Gibbs focuses mostly on directors celebrated in the early days of auteurism--Renoir, Ford, Ray, Sirk, Minnelli, Hitchcock, Ophuls. You can imagine an undergrad raised on high tech blockbusters getting a bit restless. The most important insight for the seasoned reader is how mise-en-scene analysis, as a preferred method of the auteur critics, elevated the role of director and in turn raised the status of narrative film from shallow escapism to profound artform.

Monster books are our JAM. We love them. This one is super great. They are super great. My son knows all of them by heart. I didn't know this was going to be hardback when I got it, so that was a bonus. Can I give it 10 stars?

What a super cute story! My six year old loved it (it was our September book of the month), and we have read it almost nightly since. He asks lots of pertinent questions about the election because of how they are raised in the book, such as voting age. But also came away with the moral of always try to make positive things happen, even if you don't win. Highly recommend!

This may be my favorite Monster book yet! Paul Czajak's rhythmic rhyming combined with a story about Monster running for president will entertain and teach kids of all ages. I read it aloud to the entire family today (7 or us ages 5-42) And we all agreed that the book is masterfully written, clever and all around fun! Thanks Paul, for another great read aloud!!!

Read a review and thought this would be perfect for my 5 year old granddaughter. Nice concept, but the dragon's platform was a bit too confusing. Overall, it was a disappointment. Will keep for the next election

May be a cute story. I can't tell. I purchased the Kindle version, and it did not load properly or it just isn't formatted properly. Words are cut off or missing. There is a slide at the bottom instead of an arrow to click to the next page. On page 10, the words "Monster needs" and that is is. On page 11, "I want to be part of this incredible event." What? Cannot make sense of the story with missing text.

If you like beautiful photographs and little text, this is the book for you. I have not seen the featured rooms in other books. They are often sumptuous and a delight to see. The minimal text is presented in several languages. Sometimes the text is a bit too minimal in that you would like to know more about specific pieces in the rooms. Overall it is a wonderful visual experience.

A little too much of modern and edgy for me. I like traditional and historic Paris, I guess.Still a beautiful book. However, the same photos or apartments appear in other books.So, bummer.

Beautiful style with great ideas.

OK...I agree with previous reviewers with regard to the photography in this book...it is spectacular! I am a fan of the "french style" of decorating and have several interior design books that reflect that aesthetic. Upon receiving this one, I voraciously went through it on the day it was received and did enjoy the beautiful pictures, however, I knew almost immediately that this would not be a book that I would refer to often in the future. I get inspiration for my own interior by referencing ideas from others and expounding on them to come up with new and different style options. This book wouldn't offer much inspiration for my purposes since all the rooms pictured are on such a grand scale. I will hang on to it and maybe pull it out periodically for entertainment, but this one may collect a little dust on my bookshelf in the meantime! Knowing what I know now, I would probably have chosen to spend what I spent on this lovely book on TWO less glamorous but more informative volumes! Put simply, if you are looking for books on interior design to aid you in feathering your own nest, don't bother with this one unless you have deep pockets and/or cavernous rooms to fill!

My first reaction to the lavish, oversized LIVING IN STYLE: PARIS is that the photography of Reto Guntli is absolutely impeccable. While there is commentary (in five languages) about each of the twenty-two living quarters, this book, as you would expect from one about interior design, is all about the visual. Exquisitely printed, it is one that I would hesitate to let a visitor in my cluttered home even leaf through. It is that beautiful.My second reaction, the one I always have when viewing such splendor, is a question: does anyone really live like this? I suppose the answer must be yes. But I always wonder where they hid the newspaper and do they have a household pet?But back to these outrageously beautiful photographs. Perfectly lit and composed, they are a visual delight. Surely no one does better architectual photography than Mr. Guntli.While neither I nor anyone I hold dear will ever come close to having a dwelling like any of these, what we mortals can take from such a book is ideas on how to improve our own interiors. For example, I know now where to hang my pen-and-ink drawing of my cat: by my bed. (p. 177) And I want that 19th Century brass bed on the same page, along with those gorgeous African armchairs (p. 22).In "Country Home in Paris" Terry de Gunzburg (p.54) says that "what is most important for a home is its soul, the life it lives rather than it being a mere showcase of beautiful objects." I could not agree more. I would argue that some of these homes have one art object too many, but then I could be wrong. In any event, LIVING IN STYLE: PARIS will make you want to visit or revisit, as the case may be, that city when you see all the exterior scenes from the windows of these homes. While you probably will never see any of these interiors, you can certainly take in all the beauty of one of the world's great cities.

I love to splurge on magazines such as Elle Décor and Architectural Digest to get ideas for what to do with my own space. (No Better Homes & Gardens for me!) My friends make fun of me all the time for spending so much on those publications. I was so happy when they surprised me with this wonderful book for my birthday! I love it! I loved getting a glimpse inside the homes of famous personalities like Diane von Furstenberg. Each space is sophisticated, and all the captions explain the history of each unique space and what the decorators did to give it a personality of its own. A great peak into the prestigious homes in Paris, this book is great inspiration for the pied-à-terre I aspire to.

It took me almost two entire books to finally get it. Adam Glass is trying to make a political statement and not a pleasant one. Amanda Waller is essentially a black, female Dick Cheney. She's fighting a terrorist organization, Basilisk, there is the literal ticking time bomb scenario, there is torture to get information about the bomb and Glass even evokes the Conservative boogie man, the New World Order. Even before I figured out the message I already recognized Waller as a ruthless Machiavellian and likely a sociopath so when Waller's life is threatened by a traitor in her midst why would I care. She's an awful human being and inspires traitors because she inserts nano bombs in peoples necks and constantly threatens to kill them. Dick Cheney would drool with envy.The argument is that Waller NEEDS to use nano bombs because the Suicide Squad is composed of ruthless killers who would turn on her at a moment notice. SO WHY IS SHE USING THEM!?!? Her response would be because her squad has nothing to lose and everything to gain. Here's an actual example of her squad in action. The Suicide Squad breaks in on a Basilisk agent who is holding half a dozen hostages and he threatens to kill one unless they back down. Deadshot responds by straight up murdering every hostage removing any bargaining chip. This was undoubtedly done to show that Deadshot is rutheless but it shows him to be a murderous psychopath and no one on the team raises a voice of complaint despite the fact that there was absolutely no reason for him to do mass murder. Our Heroes, folks. Deadshot has murdered, in cold blood, two members of his own team, one by order of Amanda Waller. Meanwhile, Adam Glass tries to make us sympathize with Deadshot and Waller.Here are two examples of how dumb this series is. At the end of book 1 Deadshot shoots Harley Quinn in the belly and you can see a gusher of blood erupt from her back. She is left lying in a pool of blood, eyes open, looking quite dead. In book two she is presumably rushed to the ER off panel and completely fixed up resolving the cliff hanger in the blink of an eye. Since in the New 52 Harley Quinn has more skin showing we get to see that her midsection miraculously has not a mark on it. Why even bother with the stupid bullet to the gut.In book one we are introduced to a really silly, forgettable villain named yo-yo whose name is an allusion to a yo-yo dieter with weight that can go up and down. For some reason King Shark consumes his fellow Suicide Squader in a torrent of chewing and blood and yet later it turns out yo-yo is still alive in King Sharks' gullet. In this book King Shark gets an electrical shock and regurgitates the still very much alive and entirely whole yo-yo whom we find out later had been in King Shark for A MONTH!!! Make no mistake King Shark is BIG but yo-yo is a full grown man. It would be like me swallowing a child and having him lodged in my throat for a month. But that is not the stupidest part. Yo-yo returns to take revenge upon Amanda Waller because he suspects she was behind him being ingested and she smugly admits to it. At this point yo-yo's powers have perhaps altered because his body is morphed similar to Plastic Man and he appears to be literally stepping out of a shadow. Oh, and it looks like the month in King Sharks digestive juices have mangled his face. This apparently was all part of Waller's plan to show that yo-yo is indestructible. WHAT??? HUH??? This was the best way possible? She couldn't simply tell him her suspicion about his invulnerability? So Waller is insanely cold hearted AND stupid and yo-yo appears to buy it. Our Heroes, folks.

This book is a fun read, with a bunch of DC baddies trying to work of their prison debt by doing insane missions for Amanda Waller. This book collects issues #8-13 of the suicide squad plus issue #0, and #9 of Resurrection Man, 8 issues total. This book begins with the recovery of the team members from the events of Suicide Squad Vol. 1. If you haven't read Vol. 1, you will most likely not understand a lot of the comments as these two book are interconnected and many references are made.Here we see a small cross-over with Resurrection man, with whom I was completely unaware of as a DC comics character, but found his power to be super interesting and a good challenge for the Squad. Now I want to know more about him, might check out his series in the future.Also I for some reason love the character of King Shark, and man/shark who is hinted at being more than he appears to be. Deadshot was someone I never really cared for, but after this series am a huge fan. I would like to know more about both of these characters.Amanda Waller takes a large role in this storyline, showing a bit of her personal life, as well as the birth of her idea of the Suicide Squad in issue #0. She proves herself to be pretty bad-ass, and her hinted relationship with Regulus and Team 7 makes me want to know more.Overall I feel the art in these books is absolutely fantastic, and greatly support the fun and action packed writing of Adam Glass. I would definitely recommend this to friends, but Vol. 1 is a must!! Obviously I would like to know more, and I think I will start with Vol. 3 which is already out!!

This is a general review of the entire New 52 Suicide Squad series. Suicide Squad is a great comic book series. Plenty of action, twists, romance? and it can be dark. The best part of the series is you are always learning something new about the characters or being introduced to new characters. It isn't the same old stories you find with the superheroes.I bought the first volume and as soon as I finished the first issue, I immediately order volume 2. If you are looking for a new series to get into, I highly recommend getting into Suicide Squad, you won't be disappointed.

Following the breakout of DC's New 52 Suicide Squad, the story of the team slows down a bit as the team is confronted with a religious zealot, who wants his suicidal cult to usher in the end times. Without writing any spoilers, the roster changes dramatically, traitors on both sides are revealed, and death comes to many, thus the name Suicide Squad. The Suicide Squad publication is a great title to read, but it peaks right around volume 3-4.

Great read if you like.... volume 1, super vilians, a good laugh, violence, plot twists, and a surprise ending.Side note: Sometimes you finish reading something and all you can say is Holy s***...this is one of those time. Besides loving the story line, most of the artwork was incredible and just stunning. Def love love these so far.

DC has dared to create complex story lines and characters and mash them all together in this exciting second installment in the Suicide Squad graphic novel series. I may have enjoyed this one more than Vol. 1, which I loved as well. I highly recommend this volume. Enjoy the ride!

The story is great for continuing the arcs of the series and you get more than enough of each character. Fantastic art and coloring with a good balance of light and dark art work really matching transitory. I was a big fan of the Amanda Waller story, it was nice seeing her be in the field.

I'm brand new to reading Comic books and started with Vol. 1 of Suicide Squad. I thought Vol. 2 was harder to follow and the drawings weren't as good. Certainly didn't stop me from ordering Vol. 3 before I was done.

Dr. Bynum is one a kind! The revision and rerelease of this book is timely in this hour. This is a time where we need to draw closer to the heart of God and His presence like never before. This book helps you go deeper to that place and reassuring of who we are in the Father. A must have if you want to go deeper in your prayer life and if you watch her live on Facebook. I've bought over 10 copies and have blessed others including my pastor with this. Sow it into someone's life including your own.

Very great book! I have definitely experienced heavier presence and glory of God learning the pattern of prayer. Dr. Bynum has out done herself with this book! I thank God for the revelation He has given to her. The only thing is that I wish she would have written beyond the Most Holy Place and told us how to get Behind the Veil, ultimately into the presence of God. But, I am glad that she didn't at the same time because I told myself that if God could give her revelation and it's right in the word of God, I just have to read the same thing she did to figure out how to get to the presence of God. I love this book!

Dr. Bynum really has a great understanding about prayer. God has blessed her as a vessel to share this revelation with us. I think it’s time we, as a Body of Christ, spiritually consider what is important to God as a top priority in our lives such as prayer. Coming before our Father, God, takes passion, consistency and ORDER. This revelation is a blessing and all we need to do is ask Holy Spirit to lead us into this sound truth.

This is a very important book to have for all praying people that is ready to go to the next level in prayer or just want a stronger effective prayer life with God.

This is a good book. I love and follow Dr Bynum's ministry for many of yrs. The only thing that was a distraction is the spacing between the words kept throwing me off. Too many typing errors. But I love the book. It should have been put together in excellence for the price. Nice pic on the front cover. Still love what she was saying.

I have purchased about five copies of this book! One for myself and others for friends and family! I also just recently received my workbook! I’m thrilled! This book is more than just a read. For the people that griped about a few minor misspellings... Had I relied upon their review, I would’ve missed my blessing (carnal Christians). Funny thing is, they missed the message. Disappointing book :(

The most intriguing piece of this collection of critical essays on Stephen King films was Michael A. Arnzen's "Tonka Terrors" on Maximum Overdrive. One for giving some good perspective on the faults of that slogger of a movie, but also begging the question of how King translates so well to film by looking at one of the failures...and a failure by the author himself, which of course presents the notion that King's success lies in part in the hands of others, but not wholly, as it isn't just any writer who has collected such a grand collection of directors, actors and the efforts of others to make such at times magnificent films. While this collection doesn't explore that top in in depth, tending to note differences between story and film rather than why and why it is necessary to do so, Tony Magistrale's choices, including his own contribution, bring us perspective as to how feminization is the saving grace of Shawshank, sneakers prove central to Stand by Me and the social hierarchy of Carrie.
