First of all, I hate that generalized 4-question thing. Like violence, for example. If you there is a war (duh, title) no one is throwing roses at each other. So violence, yes, but in his histories is far less nondescript so how does one answer that? Aside from that, I've only read some of it--as I have the entire Middle Earth Histories and going through them all over and over again for research, so I tend to go in and out of each book. Great work, yes. Finally understanding the "Ages" of Middle Earth better with the Grey Annals. If it is recommended by the Mythopoeic Society, it's always worth the $$$.
Shows clearly the development of several of the stories that JRRT included in The Silmarillion, including a much-better-developed version of the the story of Turin locating Morwen. Very good for people studying the origins of the stories that Christopher Tolkien edited and put into print. There are a great many footnotes and linguistic notes, so this may be for the hardcore Tolkien fan or scholar, but well worth the effort it takes in reading it.
If you loved the Silmarillion this book is for you! On the other hand, if it was not, this book is not going to be for you.
author narrates but much commentary from his son as it is all unfinished pieces of work that he tried to make coherent story from. I enjoyed it but it was still not an easy read like the Hobbit, LOR, or even the Silmarillion
More of JRR's unpublished work. Christopher Tolkien does a great job of patching together his father's works to give you a choice: you can read this book as the story or you can read it to understand how the story changed and developed over time.A good read for any JRR fan. Too bad he never worked it into a final form.

Volume XI of the History of Middle-Earth contains JRR Tolkien's writings of the First Age after the Lord of the Rings was published. Most texts date from the 1950s, but some were written as late as 1970, in the last years of his life. This volume contains the history of Beleriand.Not everyone who has read The Silmarillion will enjoy this work, but if you read The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales and still hunger for more stories and information about the First Age, this book is a wonderful treat. If you don't care for the commentaries, there are still the stories themselves. Even folks who aren't interested in old versions of Tolkien's Middle-Earth writings, as published in the earlier History of Middle-Earth volumes, may enjoy this book, which like the Unfinished Tales mostly contains texts contemporary with or written after the texts that made it into the Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion.Unlike most other volumes of the History of Middle-Earth, much of Volume XI is *NEW* material that is published nowhere else. It also includes some of the actual texts that Christopher Tolkien used to construct the standard version of The Silmarillion."The Wanderings of Húrin" can be considered the greatest gem of Volume XI, continuing the tragic tale of the Children of Húrin in the tradition of the Narn i Chîn Húrin, and further developing Húrin's character. It is a completely new narrative, describing in almost novelistic prose the story of Húrin after he was released from Angband: his travel to Hithlum, and the disastrous fallout of his visit to Brethil. This is a nearly complete story, similar to the narratives in Unfinished Tales."Quendi and Eldar" is a long linguistic work, a completed text focusing on the names for the Elves and their Clans, and the other Speaking Peoples, and many other words, in different Elvish languages. Besides the linguistic material, it also discusses the various Elven clans, as well as telepathy, sign language, the Great March, some information about the Avari and the Petty-Dwarves, and other subjects. Included is Pengolodh's description of the Valar's unique language, plus a detailed account of the Elves' awakening at Cuiviénen. If you’re familiar with the history of the computer industry, you’re no doubt aware that the Internet was conceived and developed by a U.S. Government agency called DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).Chances are that you don’t know that DARPA also invented drones both big and tiny, Agent Orange, the M16 Assault Rifle, sophisticated sensor technology, the F117A stealth fighter jet, MIRVs (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles) that carry nuclear weapons, the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System, robotic soldiers — and a slew of other military weapons systems, most of them still top secret.Remember Total Information Awareness, the predecessor to the massive data collection programs of the NSA that Edward Snowden revealed? DARPA was responsible for that one, too. The agency’s work also gave birth to less lethal technologies, including “real-time video processing, noise reduction, image enhancement, and data compression.†It’s difficult to exaggerate the impact of this little-known agency.All this comes to light in the pages of journalist Annie Jacobsen’s The Pentagon’s Brain, the first full-length study of America’s secretive military research agency.DARPA’s missionDARPA was created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower over the strenuous objections of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and just about everyone else in the military establishment. “Its mission is to create revolutions in military science and to maintain technological dominance over the rest of the world.†No doubt there are many in the military and in conservative circles who are thrilled at how successful the agency has been in fulfilling its mission, their original unhappiness notwithstanding. The rest of us should be scared. Very scared.With its origins in the debates over the use of the hydrogen bomb and the policy of Mutual Assured Destruction in the 1950s, DARPA’s R&D programs have consistently been found on the far frontiers of military science. Among its least savory efforts (among a great many) were a project in 1958 to shield the United States from Soviet attack by exploding nuclear weapons in the upper atmosphere and the use of the herbicide Agent Orange to defoliate the South Vietnamese forests sheltering Vietcong troops. DARPA scientists actually did detonate nuclear weapons in the atmosphere — and you know the story of Agent Orange.Unpleasant surprisesThe Pentagon’s Brain was the product of exhaustive research. Much of the book is based on formerly classified materials that have only lately come to light. Author Annie Jacobsen turned up startling new information in the course of her research. For example, she learned that the world came even closer to Armageddon during the Cuban Missile Crisis than anyone outside top government and military circles was aware: “four nuclear weapons were detonated in space†during those tense days, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union stood on the brink of total nuclear war. (Two of those were the aforementioned bombs sired by DARPA.)Though born in the grimmest days of the Cold War, DARPA’s work for more than a decade focused on the war in Vietnam. (The agency was originally called just ARPA until Congress got into the act.) That conflict led to the development of the M16 rifle and many other, less celebrated weapons of war. But much of the work involved the social sciences, subcontracted to the RAND Corporation, a name that will be familiar to anyone who lived through those times. ARPA contractors working for RAND helped to justify the notorious Strategic Hamlets program in which South Vietnamese peasants were forcibly removed from their villages and their lands and moved into heavily guarded new settlements. In fairness, the first round of ARPA social scientists found that the Strategic Hamlets were alienating peasants, but their findings were simply rejected by Pentagon leaders and more amenable researchers hired. Similarly, “the agency did not want to hear that the Vietcong could not be defeated. [Administrators] took the position that [the social scientists] had gone off the rails.â€The electronic battlefieldThe high profile of many DARPA inventions notwithstanding, what may be its most significant creation was a “system of systems†that is known today as the electronic battlefield. Jacobsen calls it “the most revolutionary piece of military technology of the twentieth century, after the hydrogen bomb.†This concept encompasses the use of remotely piloted attack drones and technology that enhances the ability of individual soldiers. Ultimately, DARPA research is expected to extend the concept into “transhumanism — the notion that man can and will alter the human condition fundamentally by augmenting humans with machines and other means.†One such effort is the DARPA exoskeleton, which bears an uncanny resemblance to The Terminator and Robocop. Another is an effort to “allow future ‘soldiers [to] communicate by thought alone.â€The Pentagon’s Brain is crammed with chilling examples of the brave new world envisioned by DARPA scientists. I would like to think that every member of Congress would read this book — and then take a much more careful look at funding for the Pentagon. Building from research in her previous books as well as her past careers as an LA Times Magazine historical reporter and a PJMedia investigative reporter, Jacobsen covers what is for her familiar ground. She follows it up with impeccable research and then brings together all the seemingly disjointed pieces into a cognitive whole. The effect is a book that is as thorough as it is fascinating. Will better books about DARPA be written in the future? Undoubtedly, but only because future journalists will have Jacobsen to thank for showing them the way. Jacobsen writes with the puritan objectivity that sometimes gets her in trouble with readers and subjects that have strong biases but it works well in this book. Some readers may disagree with some of her conclusions (her battle of Mogadishu assessment misses the mark). But it's nearly impossible for an outsider to thoroughly capture all of the right stuff when researching classified history. And she closes the book with her signature personal appearance in the last chapter. Because after all, good writers not only write history, they sometimes become a part of it. Highly recommended. Especially for those interested in Cold War history, intelligence operations, technology, US government secret programs, government conspiracy, futurism, research and development, military affairs, and scientific innovations. I loved this book. I purchased it in KIndle form and then recently purchased the hard copy to reread with notes.The book gives you a history of the Pentagon, inception of alphabet agencies of the government and the origins of psychological warfare as well as past and some contemporary research into weaponry. The portion on the Vietnam war was very enlightening.I recommend this book as well as her Area 51 book.

A couple of systems such as the AR 15/M-16 rifle, drone aircraft, night vision goggles, and robotics are in use today and have been updated since the book was written. I highly recommend the book.
An interesting history of DARPA, DOD's advanced research arm. It is heavy going at times but very substantive. Some of the early chapters stuck me as a bit sensationalist, looking back 50 years after the very different times. The book might not be of interest to someone with little knowledge or interest in Defense issues

Amazing description of H-bomb and subsequent nuclear race. Scares the Dickens out of you as it exposes crazy strategies studied but thankfully rejected. Ends with believable speculation of brain control research. Would rate higher but for slow mid-book coverage of well understood events . Could eliminate 30% without loss of significance.

Stumbled across this book by accident and have to say that it is a gem. A fantastic book - no fluff here and certainly not like the rest of the books out there on the subject where you find the same high-level info that really doesn't apply to a pentest today. Only 1 or 2 things in this book that I don't already use in my own pentests, which was quite surprising considering that, until now, I hadn't come across a single book with these techniques - techniques that I can profess to use daily in my line of work.By no means is this book an exhaustive look at penetration testing techniques, but it most certainly includes material that will get you the 'keys to the kingdom' on your target environment 90% of the time [personal experience]. Highly recommend this book for professionals just starting out in the field as well as for any veterans who may have received their penetration testing training from 'traditional' sources.
This book gave a very comprehensive overview of certain tactics and methods by which people hack. I found the information to be extremely helpful as well as easy to follow. Anyone interested in this topic can certain find the material in this book to be accessible. There are a few programs and references that a little hard to follow if you have no background at all in this field, but definitely manageable. However, overall I highly recommend this book! It gives great insight into the hacker's mindset as well as ways in which they do what they do.
The Hacker Playbook is written very well, with Kim laying out concepts and strategies in a clear, concise, and methodical manner that makes it very easy to learn from. He is very up-to-date on the techniques and tools utilized in the field of penetration and he draws from many real-world situations to present applicable examples. From beginning to end, it's clear that Kim's years of experience and successes in the industry have given him a unique perspective on methodology which has shaped the toolbox he employs. I especially enjoyed the sections on social engineering and the more unconventional aspects of hacking. Both beginners and veterans alike can learn something from this book!
Really great guide that I recently used as a base for a pentest. The book does an excellent job of starting out slow so that you approach pentests slowly - and with a solid methodology and game plan in place before you do anything else. The book also does a great job of helping readers build a diverse toolkit. Many of the tools I hadn't heard of before, so it was fun to expand my toolset and knowledge even more. Keep an eye on the author's site as they have a page where some corrections are posted (i.e. I had problem with a few tools such as peepingtom, but the author squared me away).
I bought this book as a gift for my boyfriend and he loved it! He started reading it right away and hasn't put it down since. I've overheard him having a bunch of "aha moments" so I'm guessing it's been a great tool for some of the side projects he does. Super glad I got this book for him!
This is one of the best books I purchased on the subject recently. As an aspiring security professional, I appreciated the no nonsense approach to pentesting. Kim does a fantastic job covering the basic tools he uses when pen testing. It feels accessible to those just getting started, while having useful information for those looking for a faster way of doing some of the steps of a penetration test. A worthy read!
Peter Kim (the author) has written a great collection of useful items for penetration testing, from writing python scripts, to bypassing antivirus with the Veil Framework. The items are not extremely detailed and hand-holding so I would recommend this book for anybody with intermediate experience in metasploit or using Kali.

This book was written by David McCullough, who was the voice of Ken Burns Civil War documentary, as well as the author of numerous biographies, including one on John Adams, which I read years ago, and would also highly recommend. This book starts slowly, as biographies often do, but quickly picks up. McCullough cleverly interweaves stories about the early years of aviation, the Wright brothers, their family, and the large cast of characters involved in making of the aviation industry. It was amazing to find out Orville lived to see jet planes and the breaking of the sound barrier. All in all, it's an impressive treatise, as well as a page turning story of two unbelievably determined brothers. One funny is that it looked to be a real brick on the kindle, but I noticed I was well through the time line, and yet was only 50% through the book. It turned out the book finishes at 58%. The balance is a series of great photos, but mostly is just truckloads of references. So it's not the brick it first looked to be.
David McCullough is one of the preeminent American historians of our times, the deft biographer of John Adams and Harry Truman, and in this book he brings his wonderful historical exposition and storytelling skills to the lives of the Wright brothers. So much is known about these men that they have been turned into legends. Legends they were but they were also human, and this is the quality that McCullough is best at showcasing in these pages. The book is a quick and fun read. If I have some minor reservations they are only in the lack of technical detail which could have informed descriptions of some of the Wrights' experiments and the slightly hagiographical tint that McCullough is known to bring to his subjects. I would also have appreciated some more insights into attempts that other people around the world were making in enabling powered flight. Nevertheless, this is after all a popular work, and popular history seldom gets better than under McCullough's pen.The book shines in three aspects. Firstly McCullough who is quite certainly one of the best storytellers among all historians does a great job of giving us the details of the Wrights' upbringing and family. He drives home the importance of the Wrights' emphasis on simplicity, intellectual hunger and plain diligence, hard work and determination. The Wright brothers' father who was a Bishop filled the house with books and learning and never held back their intellectual curiosity. This led to an interest in tinkering in the best sense of the tradition, first with bicycles and then with airplanes. The Wrights' sister Katharine also played an integral part in their lives; they were very close to her and McCullough's account is filled with copious examples of the affectionate, sometimes scolding, always encouraging letters that the siblings wrote to each other. The Wrights' upbringing drives home the importance of family and emotional stability.Secondly, McCullough also brings us the riveting details of their experiments with powered flight. He takes us from their selection of Kill Devil Hills in the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a flight venue through their struggles, both with the weather conditions and with the machinery. He tells us how the brothers were inspired by Otto Lillienthal, a brilliant German glider pilot who crashed to his death and by Octave Chanute and Samuel Langley. Chanute was a first-rate engineer who encouraged their efforts while Samuel Langley headed aviation efforts at the Smithsonian and was a rival. The Wrights' difficult life on the sand dunes - with "demon mosquitoes", 100 degree weather and wind storms - is described vividly. First they experimented with the glider, then consequentially with motors. Their successful and historic flight on December 17, 1903 was a testament to their sheer grit, bon homie and technical brilliance. A new age had dawned.Lastly, McCullough does a fine job describing how the Wrights rose to world fame after their flight. The oddest part of the story concerns how they almost did not make it because institutions in their own country did not seem to care enough. They found a willing and enthusiastic customer in the French, perhaps the French had already embraced the spirit of aviation through their pioneering efforts in ballooning (in this context, Richard Holmes's book on the topic is definitely worth a read). Wilbur traveled to France, secured funding from individuals and the government and made experimental flights that were greeted with ecstatic acclaim. It was only when his star rose in France that America took him seriously. After that it was easier for him and Orville to secure army contracts and test more advanced designs. Throughout their efforts to get funding, improve their designs and tell the world what they had done, their own determined personalities and the support of their sister and family kept them going. While Wilbur died at the age of forty-five from typhoid fever, Orville lived until after World War 2 to witness the evolution of his revolutionary invention in all its glory and horror.McCullough's account of the Wright brothers, as warm and fast-paced as it is, was most interesting to me for the lessons it holds for the future. The brothers were world-class amateurs, not professors at Ivy League universities or researchers in giant corporations. A similar attitude was demonstrated by the amateurs who built Silicon Valley, and that's also an attitude that's key to American innovation. The duo's relentless emphasis on trial and error - displayed to an almost fanatical extent by their compatriot Thomas Edison - is also an immortal lesson. But perhaps what the Wright brothers' story exemplifies the most is the importance of simple traits like devotion to family, hard work, intense intellectual curiosity and most importantly, the frontier, can-do attitude that has defined the American dream since its inception. It's not an easy ideal to hold on to, and as we move into the 21st century, we should always remember Wilbur and Orville who lived that ideal better than almost anyone else. David McCullough tells us how they did it.
McCullough has written a serious and riveting review of the lives of Wilbur and Orville. His writing style is concise, thorough, and unpretentious. I was able to read it easily and enjoyably and learned many things about the Wright family that I didn’t know. The book was thus valuable to me.FAMILYMcCullough makes it clear that the Wilbur and Orville were a product of their family environment. Their father was the major influence. Milton Wright was a minister and finally a bishop in the United Brethren Church in Christ.McCullough writes — “He was an unyielding abstainer, which was rare on the frontier, a man of rectitude and purpose— all of which could have served as a description of Milton himself and Wilbur and Orville as well.â€His strict values molded and focused the views of the three younger Wrights (Katherine, Wilbur, and Orville). In addition to his strictness, he was a true classical liberal in his beliefs in the scientific method and equal rights for all people, no matter their race or gender. For example, Milton wrote to his sons when they were in Paris trying to get support for their flying machine: “Sons—Be men of the highest types personally, mentally, morally, and spiritually. Be clean, temperate, sober minded, and great souled.†As grown, experienced, and highly successful inventors, they responded: “Father — All the wine I have tasted since leaving home would not fill a single wine glass. I am sure that Orville and myself will do nothing that will disgrace the training we received from you and Mother.â€McCullough writes — “Years later, a friend told Orville that he and his brother would always stand as an example of how far Americans with no special advantages could advance in the world. ‘But it isn’t true,’ Orville responded emphatically, ‘to say we had no special advantages . . . the greatest thing in our favor was growing up in a family where there was always much encouragement to intellectual curiosity.’ â€BUSINESSMcCullough records Wilbur’s thoughts on being in business in a letter to his brother Lorin in 1894:“In business it is the aggressive man, who continually has his eye on his own interest, who succeeds. … There is nothing reprehensible in an aggressive disposition, so long as it is not carried to excess, for such men make the world and its affairs move. . . . I entirely agree that the boys of the Wright family are all lacking in determination and push. That is the very reason that none of us have been or will be more than ordinary businessmen. … We ought not to have been businessmen.â€In 1911, Wilbur wrote:“When we think what we might have accomplished if we had been able to devote this time [fighting patent infringement suits] to experiments, we feel very sad, but it is always easier to deal with things than with men, and no one can direct his life entirely as he would choose.â€The Wrights never built, or even tried to build, an industrial empire as Ford or Edison or their Dayton neighbors John and Frank Patterson (National Cash Register) had done. The Wrights were intellectual men and women.ENGINEERINGMcCullough's book is quite light on technical discussions. But the Wrights' unique approach to technology development is the essence of who they were and why they were such successful engineers when others better funded, better educated, and better connected failed. For example, McCullough ignored the following examples.Wilbur and Orville were superb engineers, though neither went beyond high school. They found by trial and error that the existing data held by the science of aeronautics was flawed even though its principles were generally correct. They zeroed in on weight, power, control, lift, and the propeller as the main technologies that had to be solved. What is so astounding is not just that they solved these technical problems and reduced them to practice, but that they did it in record time. In a matter of three years, they invented or reinvented virtually the whole field of aeronautics. For example, the wind tunnel had been invented thirty years before, but Wilbur and Orville developed it into a precise quantitative instrument. With it, they developed not just the wing configurations, but coupled with the understanding that a propeller is simply a wing on a rotating shaft, they rewrote the rules of propeller design and optimized its efficiency dramatically. These two men had an insight into, and a reverence for, quantitative empirical data that was unique in aeronautical engineering at that time.McCullough shows how that reverence for truth (data) grew out of their family standards. But there was more to it than the principles of a strict Protestant upbringing. It also has to do with time and place. The late 1800s and early 1900s was a period of great minds applying the rules of The Enlightenment and the experience of science to practical problems. The place was an industrial axis, which was anchored by Dayton and Detroit and included Flint, Toledo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and many other cities in the Midwest. This is where Edison, Ford, Dow, Firestone, the Patterson Brothers, and the Wright Brothers lived and created their technologies. There was a culture of boundless innovation and an infrastructure that included materials and support equipment that fostered great invention. It was similar in many ways to Silicon Valley today.REINFORCE THE NARRATIVEAnother area that could be strengthened in the book is its niche. There has been so much written about the Wrights that each new book needs to distinguish itself in some way with a different point of view, a new set of facts, or a fresh interpretation of old facts.For example, McCullough writes — “In early 1889, while still in high school, Orville started his own print shop in the carriage shed behind the house, and apparently with no objections from the Bishop. Interested in printing for some while, Orville had worked for two summers as an apprentice at a local print shop. He designed and built his own press using a discarded tombstone, a buggy spring, and scrap metal.â€That last sentence about building his own printing press defines so much about Orville and his simple pragmatism. To reinforce that point requires some expansion of that event or similar other defining events in the lives of Wilbur and Orville. I wanted to read more about Orville's compulsive act of invention, but it wasn't there.The 81 photos McCullough includes in his book are treasures. Many of them are familiar, but so many are new looks at the Wrights. I wish there were greatly expanded captions below each photo, for each one is a story in itself.One source of knowledge about the Wrights’ approach to aeronautics is the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. It is normally overshadowed by the more popular Air and Space Museum in Washington, but the exhibits at the Air Force Museum walk you through the Wrights’ engineering exploits with a degree of detail and insight I have found nowhere else.
