This book was written by David McCullough, who was the voice of Ken Burns Civil War documentary, as well as the author of numerous biographies, including one on John Adams, which I read years ago, and would also highly recommend. This book starts slowly, as biographies often do, but quickly picks up. McCullough cleverly interweaves stories about the early years of aviation, the Wright brothers, their family, and the large cast of characters involved in making of the aviation industry. It was amazing to find out Orville lived to see jet planes and the breaking of the sound barrier. All in all, it's an impressive treatise, as well as a page turning story of two unbelievably determined brothers. One funny is that it looked to be a real brick on the kindle, but I noticed I was well through the time line, and yet was only 50% through the book. It turned out the book finishes at 58%. The balance is a series of great photos, but mostly is just truckloads of references. So it's not the brick it first looked to be.

David McCullough is one of the preeminent American historians of our times, the deft biographer of John Adams and Harry Truman, and in this book he brings his wonderful historical exposition and storytelling skills to the lives of the Wright brothers. So much is known about these men that they have been turned into legends. Legends they were but they were also human, and this is the quality that McCullough is best at showcasing in these pages. The book is a quick and fun read. If I have some minor reservations they are only in the lack of technical detail which could have informed descriptions of some of the Wrights' experiments and the slightly hagiographical tint that McCullough is known to bring to his subjects. I would also have appreciated some more insights into attempts that other people around the world were making in enabling powered flight. Nevertheless, this is after all a popular work, and popular history seldom gets better than under McCullough's pen.The book shines in three aspects. Firstly McCullough who is quite certainly one of the best storytellers among all historians does a great job of giving us the details of the Wrights' upbringing and family. He drives home the importance of the Wrights' emphasis on simplicity, intellectual hunger and plain diligence, hard work and determination. The Wright brothers' father who was a Bishop filled the house with books and learning and never held back their intellectual curiosity. This led to an interest in tinkering in the best sense of the tradition, first with bicycles and then with airplanes. The Wrights' sister Katharine also played an integral part in their lives; they were very close to her and McCullough's account is filled with copious examples of the affectionate, sometimes scolding, always encouraging letters that the siblings wrote to each other. The Wrights' upbringing drives home the importance of family and emotional stability.Secondly, McCullough also brings us the riveting details of their experiments with powered flight. He takes us from their selection of Kill Devil Hills in the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a flight venue through their struggles, both with the weather conditions and with the machinery. He tells us how the brothers were inspired by Otto Lillienthal, a brilliant German glider pilot who crashed to his death and by Octave Chanute and Samuel Langley. Chanute was a first-rate engineer who encouraged their efforts while Samuel Langley headed aviation efforts at the Smithsonian and was a rival. The Wrights' difficult life on the sand dunes - with "demon mosquitoes", 100 degree weather and wind storms - is described vividly. First they experimented with the glider, then consequentially with motors. Their successful and historic flight on December 17, 1903 was a testament to their sheer grit, bon homie and technical brilliance. A new age had dawned.Lastly, McCullough does a fine job describing how the Wrights rose to world fame after their flight. The oddest part of the story concerns how they almost did not make it because institutions in their own country did not seem to care enough. They found a willing and enthusiastic customer in the French, perhaps the French had already embraced the spirit of aviation through their pioneering efforts in ballooning (in this context, Richard Holmes's book on the topic is definitely worth a read). Wilbur traveled to France, secured funding from individuals and the government and made experimental flights that were greeted with ecstatic acclaim. It was only when his star rose in France that America took him seriously. After that it was easier for him and Orville to secure army contracts and test more advanced designs. Throughout their efforts to get funding, improve their designs and tell the world what they had done, their own determined personalities and the support of their sister and family kept them going. While Wilbur died at the age of forty-five from typhoid fever, Orville lived until after World War 2 to witness the evolution of his revolutionary invention in all its glory and horror.McCullough's account of the Wright brothers, as warm and fast-paced as it is, was most interesting to me for the lessons it holds for the future. The brothers were world-class amateurs, not professors at Ivy League universities or researchers in giant corporations. A similar attitude was demonstrated by the amateurs who built Silicon Valley, and that's also an attitude that's key to American innovation. The duo's relentless emphasis on trial and error - displayed to an almost fanatical extent by their compatriot Thomas Edison - is also an immortal lesson. But perhaps what the Wright brothers' story exemplifies the most is the importance of simple traits like devotion to family, hard work, intense intellectual curiosity and most importantly, the frontier, can-do attitude that has defined the American dream since its inception. It's not an easy ideal to hold on to, and as we move into the 21st century, we should always remember Wilbur and Orville who lived that ideal better than almost anyone else. David McCullough tells us how they did it.

McCullough has written a serious and riveting review of the lives of Wilbur and Orville. His writing style is concise, thorough, and unpretentious. I was able to read it easily and enjoyably and learned many things about the Wright family that I didn’t know. The book was thus valuable to me.FAMILYMcCullough makes it clear that the Wilbur and Orville were a product of their family environment. Their father was the major influence. Milton Wright was a minister and finally a bishop in the United Brethren Church in Christ.McCullough writes — “He was an unyielding abstainer, which was rare on the frontier, a man of rectitude and purpose— all of which could have served as a description of Milton himself and Wilbur and Orville as well.”His strict values molded and focused the views of the three younger Wrights (Katherine, Wilbur, and Orville). In addition to his strictness, he was a true classical liberal in his beliefs in the scientific method and equal rights for all people, no matter their race or gender. For example, Milton wrote to his sons when they were in Paris trying to get support for their flying machine: “Sons—Be men of the highest types personally, mentally, morally, and spiritually. Be clean, temperate, sober minded, and great souled.” As grown, experienced, and highly successful inventors, they responded: “Father — All the wine I have tasted since leaving home would not fill a single wine glass. I am sure that Orville and myself will do nothing that will disgrace the training we received from you and Mother.”McCullough writes — “Years later, a friend told Orville that he and his brother would always stand as an example of how far Americans with no special advantages could advance in the world. ‘But it isn’t true,’ Orville responded emphatically, ‘to say we had no special advantages . . . the greatest thing in our favor was growing up in a family where there was always much encouragement to intellectual curiosity.’ ”BUSINESSMcCullough records Wilbur’s thoughts on being in business in a letter to his brother Lorin in 1894:“In business it is the aggressive man, who continually has his eye on his own interest, who succeeds. … There is nothing reprehensible in an aggressive disposition, so long as it is not carried to excess, for such men make the world and its affairs move. . . . I entirely agree that the boys of the Wright family are all lacking in determination and push. That is the very reason that none of us have been or will be more than ordinary businessmen. … We ought not to have been businessmen.”In 1911, Wilbur wrote:“When we think what we might have accomplished if we had been able to devote this time [fighting patent infringement suits] to experiments, we feel very sad, but it is always easier to deal with things than with men, and no one can direct his life entirely as he would choose.”The Wrights never built, or even tried to build, an industrial empire as Ford or Edison or their Dayton neighbors John and Frank Patterson (National Cash Register) had done. The Wrights were intellectual men and women.ENGINEERINGMcCullough's book is quite light on technical discussions. But the Wrights' unique approach to technology development is the essence of who they were and why they were such successful engineers when others better funded, better educated, and better connected failed. For example, McCullough ignored the following examples.Wilbur and Orville were superb engineers, though neither went beyond high school. They found by trial and error that the existing data held by the science of aeronautics was flawed even though its principles were generally correct. They zeroed in on weight, power, control, lift, and the propeller as the main technologies that had to be solved. What is so astounding is not just that they solved these technical problems and reduced them to practice, but that they did it in record time. In a matter of three years, they invented or reinvented virtually the whole field of aeronautics. For example, the wind tunnel had been invented thirty years before, but Wilbur and Orville developed it into a precise quantitative instrument. With it, they developed not just the wing configurations, but coupled with the understanding that a propeller is simply a wing on a rotating shaft, they rewrote the rules of propeller design and optimized its efficiency dramatically. These two men had an insight into, and a reverence for, quantitative empirical data that was unique in aeronautical engineering at that time.McCullough shows how that reverence for truth (data) grew out of their family standards. But there was more to it than the principles of a strict Protestant upbringing. It also has to do with time and place. The late 1800s and early 1900s was a period of great minds applying the rules of The Enlightenment and the experience of science to practical problems. The place was an industrial axis, which was anchored by Dayton and Detroit and included Flint, Toledo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and many other cities in the Midwest. This is where Edison, Ford, Dow, Firestone, the Patterson Brothers, and the Wright Brothers lived and created their technologies. There was a culture of boundless innovation and an infrastructure that included materials and support equipment that fostered great invention. It was similar in many ways to Silicon Valley today.REINFORCE THE NARRATIVEAnother area that could be strengthened in the book is its niche. There has been so much written about the Wrights that each new book needs to distinguish itself in some way with a different point of view, a new set of facts, or a fresh interpretation of old facts. For example, McCullough writes — “In early 1889, while still in high school, Orville started his own print shop in the carriage shed behind the house, and apparently with no objections from the Bishop. Interested in printing for some while, Orville had worked for two summers as an apprentice at a local print shop. He designed and built his own press using a discarded tombstone, a buggy spring, and scrap metal.”That last sentence about building his own printing press defines so much about Orville and his simple pragmatism. To reinforce that point requires some expansion of that event or similar other defining events in the lives of Wilbur and Orville. I wanted to read more about Orville's compulsive act of invention, but it wasn't there. The 81 photos McCullough includes in his book are treasures. Many of them are familiar, but so many are new looks at the Wrights. I wish there were greatly expanded captions below each photo, for each one is a story in itself. One source of knowledge about the Wrights’ approach to aeronautics is the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. It is normally overshadowed by the more popular Air and Space Museum in Washington, but the exhibits at the Air Force Museum walk you through the Wrights’ engineering exploits with a degree of detail and insight I have found nowhere else.

Review

NATIONAL BESTSELLEROne of the Best Books of the Year: The Washington Post, NPR, and Esquire“[A] beguilingly irresistible book. Like a lost lover, it holds on tight long after the affair is over.” —The New York Times Book Review“Classic Murakami. . . . [His] voice—cool, poised, witty, characterized by a peculiar blend of whimsy and poignancy, wit and profundity—hasn’t lost its power to unsettle even as it amuses.” —The Boston Globe  “Time and again in these seven stories, Murakami displays his singular genius.” —Los Angeles Times   “Intimate, captivating and poignant. . . . A short story is brief enough to be perfectible—and Men Without Women showcases that.” —The Kansas City Star “Beautifully rendered.” —Financial Times“Affecting. . . . Murakami is a master of the open-ended mystery. . . . His meandering, mesmerizing tales of profound alienation are driven by puzzling circumstances that neither his characters nor readers can crack—recalling existentialist Gabriel Marcel’s assertion that ‘Life is not a problem to be solved but a mystery to be experienced.’” —The Washington Post   “[Murakami] remains in top form.” —San Francisco Chronicle   “Each of the seven stories here [is] a gem in and of its own right, but strung together they’re a sparkling strand of precious stones, the light refracted from each equally brilliant but the tones varying subtly. . . . I have something of a love/hate relationship with short stories. Too many mediocre offerings leave me despairing of the genre, but then a collection like Men Without Women comes along and all is forgiven, my faith restored in the recognition of how utterly perfect the medium can be—in the right hands.” —Lucy Scholes, The Independent   “Charming and funny.” —Vulture   “The best of these stories hold the excitement of a quest: These odd episodes of awakening desire show men startled into an awareness of how they have shorted themselves on life.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune   “Murakami’s greatest strength is his creation of environments just eccentric enough to wrong-foot you—not exactly magical realism, but perhaps enigmatic realism. . . . When his writing is at its best, his characters act as a fisheye lens through which to scrutinize a slightly off-kilter world that surrounds them.” —The New Republic   “Masterful. . . . The mundane gives way suddenly, like an ice floe cracking under our feet, only to reconstitute itself a moment later and swallow up that brief glimpse of what lies below.” —Vice   “A whimsical delight. . . . Sanity might be overrated, but Murakami is surely not.” —The Christian Science Monitor

I've been a huge Murakami fan for years. I've thoroughly enjoyed his short stories, especially those from "Blind willow, sleeping woman". This is a short to medium length collecting of stories that are decidedly uneven.'Drive my car' begins the collection in a good way. It's simple, easy Murakami, a great way to get into the groove. This eases the reader into 'Yesterday', arguably the second best story of the collection. But of course this story was published in the New Yorker, so I've read it a couple of times. It's still available free online.Next we have a couple of rather ordinary stories (by Murakami standards): 'sheherazade' and 'an independent organ '. Both are written in the Murakami style, but neither really serves to grab the reader's attention.Following these is 'Kino', which is certainly the best story in this collection and arguably rates among the author's best short stories, in my humble opinion. This story alone pushes my rating to four stars instead of three. I pondered this story for days. It really sticks with you.Finishing the collecting are two stories that are good, but really pale after reading 'Kino'. 'Gregor Samsa in love' is a fun twist on the old Kafka story. It's a nice tribute to one of Murakami's biggest influences. And finishing the collection is the title story, little more than a few pages of musings by a vague protagonist. All in all average compared to previous collections by Murakami. I'd say read this if you're a fan, otherwise start out with earlier collections. But as a Murakami fan, it's worth the purchase just for Kino.

As I read these stories, they felt familiar to me. I've read a lot of Murakami books, so I have a grasp of how he writes, but it seemed like more than that. They were comfortable, sort of like visiting with old friends. I definitely enjoyed these stories. There is a bit of range in the styling of these. They do carry a common theme of men on their own, even when other characters, particularly women, have strong parts. Even though there are some related elements, such as infidelity, each one is distinct. The central male characters, their situations, and even the tone of the stories feel different. One thing that I love about Murakami's works is that they prominently feature the characters. Sometimes I will read things and the writer seems to be focused on an idea or plot point more than the character. Murakami is almost opposite of that. I love how we can delve into the characters' mindset and understand the pain, joy, confusion, etc. that is the crux of these moments. This might just be the best collection of Murakami stories.

On a scale of awkward to surreal, this compilation of Murakami short stories leans more towards the awkward end. In true Murakami style, you'll be exposed to subtle themes on dichotomy - the dueling contrasts within oneself, the contrasts between a man and a woman, and the contrasts between our personal microcosm and the external macrocosm. I like how Murakami balances these stories by interchanging characters throughout. For instance, he starts the book with a story of a man who befriends his late wife's lover, and ends the book with a story of a man who learns of the death of his ex-lover through her husband. Perhaps all the characters in these stories are all the same, and are stuck in an alternate reality/parallel universe, also known as the Murakami purgatory. Maybe Murakami is holding a mirror to our own reality showing us how sometimes we experience the requited and sometimes the unrequited. Or that none of us have "love antibodies" and that we'll eventually play the part of the weird, secretive and lonely protagonist found in many of his books. Perhaps he's showing us that love makes us blind (one character in the book literally has a "blind eye"); that love can cause so much pain we experience things that possibly never happened (Kino); or that we will never fully know or understand someone no matter how intimate you are with them (another common theme in Murakami's books.) Great easy read, simple storytelling with so much subtext. And that's what makes Murakami THE GREATEST writer of our times. In case you're wondering, yes there's a prostitute, a bar and a cat. It wouldn't be a Murakami book without them.

I love Murakami novels, big opuses, like 1q84, and smaller ones, like Sputnik Sweetheart. I picked this one up with a little hesitation concerned that shorter stories might fall short of what I am used to getting from Haruki.I am glad to tell you this: that worry turned out to be just a typical worry.. Just like that man who said: Who says worrying doesn't help. Whenever I worry about something, it doesn't happen! 8-)These are not short stories. Each is about 30 pages long. Not the novella size, probably (oh, gotta get to that last story that gave the collection its name) but just enough to make you feel content when you get to the end.Samsa like the others is a gem of a story. Wonderful sequel to the infamous novella from Kafka (not the one on the shore). So much more to say, but, "space" is much better as M., the woman we men all lost, declares aptly.. That wonderous nothing that is the beginning, the joyful middle and the ending of everything. Thanks H. M. Keep writing!

I thought I had it figured out, almost put the book down because of the fact it seemed so obvious. The only reason I continued is because I know Agatha Christie is anything but predictable. Let's just say there's a nice surprise for you at the end and you definitely won't expect it. I can honestly say she never disappoints. I prefer her writing to modern mysteries any day.On another note- This isn't in my top favorites by AC, but it's still a good (& quick) read. It also is not a Poirot or Marple mystery, for those wondering.

This a review of Agatha Christie's "Sparkling Cyanide." Unfortunately, Amazon has posted it to "Sad Cypress" as well. I'm sorry for the confusion.Agatha Christie wrote a dozen "stand-alone" mysteries that feature neither Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple. They're largely overlooked, which is a shame. Some of them are among her best books.I don't think this one rates that highly, but it's a good read. It has more romance than most of her books and I think Christie generally handled romance very awkwardly. But this book has several interesting couples (married and single) and the author's insights into what drives their relationships is a fascinating look into her own experiences and what they taught her. It starts out slowly, so you'll have to be patient, but I think it's worth it.This book was published in 1945, but it's set in pre-war London. There's some talk of espionage and armaments, but the war that almost destroyed England is ignored. The players are all ladies and gentlemen although their behavior is not always exemplary. Only one has a job. The rest are either independently wealthy, married to wealth, or own their own businesses. No one here is standing in line at the grocery store or walking to save bus fare.Rosemary Marle Barton is the quintessential society lady. Beautiful, seductive, and self-centered, she married an older man with little to recommend him but his good-natured devotion. And she didn't marry him for the obvious reason since she inherited a large fortune of her own. She married nice, dull George Barton because she wanted to be "safe and taken care of." Would a romantic young girl who lives for flirtations marry for that reason? Seems improbable to me, but then when she finds a man she DOES want, she's ready to abandon her marriage with no remorse. So maybe it makes sense. In 1930's London, divorce was no longer particularly shocking. Easy come, easy go.Having fallen deeply in love, Rosemary inexplicably commits suicide at her birthday party at a luxurious restaurant . Her husband is crushed, her younger sister (who inherits her money) is stunned, and the man with whom she was planning to elope is secretly relieved. But which man was it?There are enough cliches in this book to fill a football stadium. There's the dull, stolid businessman, the flirtatious, self-absorbed society beauty, the secretary in love with her boss, the obscure politician who's gained prominence and power by way of a shrewd marriage, there's the elderly widow who dithers mindlessly and her ne'er-do-well son, and there's a mystery man of whom nothing is known except the obvious - that he's good-looking, charming, and well-financed.The plot pivots around the death of Rosemary Barton. Would a beautiful, wealthy, selfish young woman kill herself in such a painful way, even if she was suffering rejection for the first time in her life? The police are satisfied with the suicide verdict, but her widower has other ideas. And he's determined to do his own detective work.Christie never met a red herring she didn't like and she throws several into this story. And yet, as she always did, she supplies all the clues. But which is which? At one point, I was convinced that two mystery men were the same person. Was that Ms. Christie's intention or was I over-thinking the whole thing?Christie was a craftswoman who recognized her own limitations and stuck to her strengths. Her only goal was to write books people would enjoy reading. I think she succeeded with this one.

Another of my favorite Christies. Like I said in another review, Christie does very well groups of people, be they family (Crooked House) or fellow travelers (Murder on the Orient Express). The characters are all individuals.Hercule Poirot is vacationing at the Jolly Roger Hotel, Smugglers’ Island, Leathercombe Bay, in southern England. Also present is Arlena Stuart Marshall, a beautiful former actress, her husband, Captain Kenneth Marshall, and his teenage daughter, Linda Marshall.Arlena loves men and men love her - and she sees no reason why just because she's married she shouldn't have some fun. Of course, for Arlena this means flirting - and more. Meanwhile, her taciturn husband - the epitome of the British gentleman - suffers in silence. Linda, though, is not so silent and her feelings are very obvious. To complicate matters, Kenneth Marshall's childhood friend, Rosamund Darnley, is also at the resort. Then there are the Redferns, Patrick and Christine. Patrick quickly begins a relationship with Arlena that sets the stage for murder. This is one of the more enjoyable Christies. The characters are well drawn and interesting. Linda lonely, unhappy, and struggling with her feelings about her stepmother's death. Even Arlena is sympathetically drawn. Once I learned her story, I could not help but feel sorry for her. There is an interesting twist at the end. The murderer and the motive are both rather surprising, and I really did not suspect either.Very well done.

Christie pulls out all the stops in this one. The story is told mostly in flashbacks or remembrances of the main characters. They are all the suspects in the death of Rosemary Barton, a beautiful socialite who seems to have everything. There are many plot twists in this one all centering around a dinner party given at a famous London restaurant. Rosemary has money and beauty, her little sister has none of these. Rosemary is in love with a married man, does his wife know, does her husband know? There's a darkhorse character whom she gets the goods on. Is he angry enough to kill her? Rosemary's husband's secretary is secretly in love with him. Is she the killer? Just when you think you have it figured out, Christie turns the tables.

This is one Agatha Christie that I had not read, for some unknown reason, for some time. I had even forgotten whodunnit, which is unusual. A lot of times that's ALL I remember. This one surprised me. There's some real darkness at its core that's very different for a Poirot novel. There's a lot about politics (mostly radical), innocent people being harmed, and a very cold-blooded psychopathic killer just full of excuses for their behavior. I really loathed this killer for their flippant disregard of other people's lives.“Yes, we are all human beings. That is what you have not remembered." (Hercule Poirot)The story starts simply - and humorously - enough with Poirot going to his dentist, Dr Henry Morley. Later, Poirot learns that Dr Morley is dead - supposedly a suicide. When another of Morley's patients, Mr Amberiotis, dies of an overdose from a dental anesthetic. Did Morley commit suicide when he realized what he had done? Of course, it's not that simple - it never is with Christie. Then another patient of Morley's, Mabelle Sainsbury Seale, vanishes. To say anything else would ruin the fun of reading this excellent Agatha Christie. Very recommended.

This is a decent textbook. There's not a lot of "fluff" where the authors use unnecessary words to make the text sound more important than it is. This book gets right to the point and summarizes well. I will be keeping this book after I complete the class as it is a good guide on research methods.

Complete waste of money, useless information that you can get with google for free. Got through the class without it.

This was a required book for an epidemiology course that I was enrolled in at my university. The book was very easy to read and the chapters were very short. It laid out pretty much everything you would need to design your own study, including which study design to select, what resources would be needed and considerations for each type of study design. This book however did not cover statistical analysis, but did direct you to other resources for that information.

I thought that this book is a good purchase if you have no previous background with public health research. When I took my Research Methods class this book wasn't very helpful for me, but I had already worked with writing public health publication writing so there was nothing here that helped a lot. What I did like about the book is that it is easy to read and addresses some issues that are important that one may not necessarily think about on his/her own.

Useful (and required) for my Research Methods class.

Rented

Hate research but this book broke down topics and process in digestible, understandable pieces.

Nice book. It's useful for learning research method.

The book was an eye opener. Fortunately, most of the safety flaws mentioned in the book were addressed by Volkswagen by the time my 1974 Super Beetle was made.

First Read this book in middleschool while trying to find a car to drive. Did wind up getting a bug and yes, blew off the road. Just wanted to re-read it since I am now (25 years later) looking for another bug.

A very interestiong book on the history of the beetle in the USA. And of the safety hazards of this small car...

If you've ever tired of all of the wannabe, pseudo intellectuals going on about how great the original VW Bug was, this is your book. I'm not the biggest Ralph Nader fan, but he hit a home run with this book. Nader is better known for his other book that torpedoed the Corvair, "Unsafe at any speed". That's because VWoA had the advertising muscle it took to keep this book quiet. If you don't think the VW bug was junk, read this book. This should shut up all of the burnouts who long for the "good old days", when they could work on their own cars. And if you love VW bugs, but are really a masochist, read this book as a form of self flagellation.

(I've red this book very long ago, and since I've red also other books by Ralph Nader on this topic, I'm not sure if the part on the Ford Pinto is in this one)Ralph Nader has obviously been payed by Ford Motor Co.!!!!His critics of the Ford Pinto (alibi-car!), was only a maneuver dictated by Ford, for turning away suspicions from the one who started the secret war against all rear-motored cars! The fact is, that rear-motored (oversteering) cars are at least five times safer than the front-engined (understeering) ones! And the (original!) VW-beetle is the safest car on Earth!!Why have almost all rear-motored cars vanished, if much safer than the front-engined counterparts? The cars producers have found out, through secret statistics, that the more accidents there are, the more cars they sell!!!! And if someone is injured or dies because of their deadly traps, "well", -tough luck-!!!!!!!!Do you remember what Preston Tucker said about the maker of the front-engined cars?........ Well it's actually -worse-!!!!!!!!(Now you know!)Renato G.F. Naso

This is a very persuasive book in which Mr. Nader is trying to get you to take every single aircooled Volkswagen off of the road forever. There are solid facts about old Volkswagen's safety shortcomings. However, some of these appear to be missing exact facts(which worked in favor of Mr. Nader) The handling characteristics seem a bit exaggerated to me. I love how he goes on and on for pages about a defective gas cap. I think it is worthwhile for an aircooled Volkswagen owner to read this. I would advise, however, to take it with a grain of salt. As I think it is one-sided in many places and maybe some factors are not explained.Plus how can a man hate cars so much yet never have been behind the wheel of one? :)

This is the book that did for the Volkswagen what "Unsafe At Any Speed" did for the Corvair. Ralph Nader had a significant role in the creation of this book, although he is not given author credit. It is a tell-all on the safety problems inherent in the design and engineering of the VW Beetle and Transporter. It is not good news for the VW enthusiast, which I am one, but it has caused me to drive it much more safely and carefully.
