Review
“A stirring and personal account . . . For all her doggedness, Hanna-Attisha is a goofy, appealing, very human narrator. . . . Hers is the book I’d recommend to those coming to the issue for the first time; the crisis becomes personalized through the stories of her patients and their parents.”—Parul Sehgal, The New York Times“The Iraqi American pediatrician who helped expose the Flint water crisis lays bare the bureaucratic bunk and flat-out injustice at the heart of the environmental disgrace—revealing, with the gripping intrigue of a Grisham thriller, ‘the story of a government poisoning its own citizens, and then lying about it.’”—O: The Oprah Magazine“It’s one thing to point out a problem. It is another thing altogether to step up and work to fix it. Mona Hanna-Attisha is a true American hero.”—Erin Brockovich “A clarion call to live a life of purpose.”—The Washington Post“Gripping . . . entertaining . . . Her book has power precisely because she takes the events she recounts so personally. . . . Moral outrage present on every page.”—The New York Times Book Review“Personal and emotional. . . She vividly describes the effects of lead poisoning on her young patients. . . . She is at her best when recounting the detective work she undertook after a tip-off about lead levels from a friend. . . . ‛Flint will not be defined by this crisis,’ vows Ms. Hanna-Attisha.”—The Economist“Flint is a public health disaster. But it was Dr. Mona, this caring, tough pediatrician turned detective, who cracked the case.”—Rachel Maddow “Mona Hanna-Attisha’s account of that urban man-made disaster reads both as a detective story and as an exposé of government corruption. . . . Her book’s message is that we each have the power to fix things, to make the world safer by opening one another’s eyes to problems. Her book reinforced my belief that the first step to becoming a citizen activist is seeing the world as it should be, not as it is given to you.”—The Seattle Times“Essential for all readers who care about children, health, and the environment. This should be required reading for public servants as an incisive cautionary tale, and for pediatricians and youth advocates as a story of heroism in the ranks of people who have the capacity to make a difference.”—Library Journal (starred review) “She is an unlikely hero—a pediatrician who went up against the forces responsible for poisoning an American city, my hometown of Flint, Michigan. Yet because of her gentle but unrelenting perseverance, she brought the world’s attention to this crime. A story of race, greed, and a crumbling democracy, What the Eyes Don’t See is a brilliantly written book—may it help save every Flint in this country.”—Michael Moore “[A] powerful firsthand account . . . Hanna-Attisha’s empathy for her patients and the people of Flint comes through, as do her pride in her Iraqi roots and her persistent optimism. . . . An inspiring work.”—Publishers Weekly “Told with passion and intelligence, What the Eyes Don’t See is an essential text for understanding the full scope of injustice in Flint and the importance of fighting for what’s right.”—Booklist (starred review)

Back in 2014 the Flint Water Crisis made me furious. When Snyder was elected governor I thought he might be one of those moderates who is fiscally responsible and socially just. But when I (little ol' me!) saw the drinking water coming out of Flint's faucets in 2014 and I heard Gov. Snyder say the water was safe, I spit out the clean water I'd been drinking from my own municipality. It took years, national attention (Rachel Maddow) and moving heaven and earth to get the Michigan Dept of Environmental Quality to even admit there was lead in the water. NO amount of lead is safe. If this had happened in Grosse Pointe where I live, the wealthy people here would've risen up, told their story and would've been listened to. The problem would have been solved within days--not years! The fact that Flint is impoverished make this doubly unconscionable. Reading this book (God bless Mona Hanna-Attisha and Marc Edwards from Virginia Tech), stirred the old fury I felt when it first happened. And that's a good thing. Poor people are getting the shaft on so many levels that shelves of books have to be written on each issue. It's exhausting ME! Don't people understand that if you help people who are disadvantaged it will help everyone? If you give everyone good health care and a good education we'll all pay less in the future? It's so logical I could scream. I'm going to scream, and keep screaming until people treat each other with the respect they deserve. This is one of the most important books of our times.
I liked Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha after reading just a few pages of her new book, "What the Eyes Don't See." Almost immediately, I started calling her Dr. Mona in my mind, meaning no disrespect by being overly familiar with a woman I have never met, but simply reflecting my growing, and now immeasurable, appreciation for her commitment to do all she could for "her" children -- the kids of Flint, Michigan who were being poisoned by lead in their drinking water. She is a kind person, and the kind of person who I would like to have as a friend, with whom I would like to be on a first-name basis. Not until page 273 did I learn that "Dr. Mona" is what she tells her kids to call her.Dr. Mona is the kind of doctor we all would want for ourselves, and especially for our children, or grandchildren. She is a teaching doctor, smart and professional, a trainer of pediatricians, but sees patients in her clinic as well. She cares about them as for her own. She views it as both a personal and a professional obligation to look out for them. And as a public health professional, she knows the importance of getting ahead of a situation, of protecting children from harm before they show up in clinics and hospitals with symptoms of devastating disease."What the Eyes Don't See" chronicles how Dr. Mona became aware of the Flint water crisis and immediately jumped into a maelstrom of political denial, blame-shifting and responsibility ducking. Using rigorous science and stubborn passion, Dr. Mona and a small circle of her colleagues were finally able to to prod resistant government officials into doing their jobs. Without their activism, the public health crisis would have continued. As it is, thousands of children were exposed to lead in the Flint water. No amount of exposure is safe, and the damage done to developing brains and bodies is permanent. Dr. Mona's team scored a victory of sorts, but it is a victory no one would ever wish for: the situation was completely avoidable and should never have occurred. An important theme of the book is the power of government, for good or for ill, and the democratic necessity that government serve all citizens, especially those who need it most. The lead water crisis in Flint was the result of a hasty and sloppily implemented decision to change the source of the town's water from Lake Michigan to the Flint River without adequate testing for, and without legally mandated treatments to address, higher levels of corrosiveness in the new water supply. The switch was instituted by an unelected city manager who was exclusively focused on "austerity" measures, placing cost-cutting above all other considerations. In the ensuing efforts to avoid responsibility, numerous other government agencies and individuals responsible for public health also lost their ethical bearings.Another inescapable theme is that our country is stronger because of immigrants like Dr. Mona and her family. She was born in England while her Iraqi father studied there. Rather than return to Saddam's brutal regime, he brought the family to Michigan while Dr. Mona was a young child. We are all better off because he did.The title, "What the Eyes Don't See," suggests many meanings. One is that our empirical knowledge is constrained by our cognitive categories. If you think that the only source of lead in children's' bloodstreams is lead-based paint, then you don't look for it in water and dismiss the possibility out of hand. Also, lead in water is not only colorless and invisible to the eye, it is also odorless and tasteless; it is a silent and unseen killer. And the devastating effects of lead exposure on intelligence, behavior and other outcomes are often latent, lying in wait potentially for many years.Dr. Mona is an elegant and graceful writer, and even those who know the basic outlines of the Flint story will find her account a page turner. She interweaves the main story about Flint with her own family story very effectively. It is an outrage that this book ever needed to be written, but given what happened in Flint I am very glad that Dr. Mona wrote it.
This book is good for teaching science, integrity, family values, persistence, the importance of good government and the virtues of public service, while also revealing the depths of depravity and carelessness sometimes found in our actual governments.
(My review from Goodreads.)I pre-ordered this book the moment it was available, because I knew it would be incredible, and I wanted to support Dr Mona — who I consider a friend, mind you. Owning this book, however, meant that I took a few extra weeks to get to it, because the pressure of not having a due date meant I kept putting it off in favour of library books that did have due dates.Having said that, I began it just a few days ago and devoured it eagerly. Some aspects of this books are not news to me — as a pediatrician with an MPH like Dr Mona, I'm well familiar with what lead does to children's developing brains, and also with toxic stress and the ravages of poverty. I've also visited Flint and seen firsthand some of the abject ruin in many neighbourhoods. (I was there to speak at a conference — what I saw was simply what I saw while out for a long morning run.). And, of course, I've heard about Dr Mona's role in this whole affair from the first time it hit the national news. Yes, she is as incredible as she appears from this book. Also, the story she tells of her own family is somewhat familiar — while I am not Chaldean, I'm a South Asian who was also born in the United Kingdom and whose family emigrated to the United States. Again, aspects of story I found familiar. So what did I find enthralling? Honestly, it was the drama of institutions. Not so much the state agencies that more or less blew it when it came to protecting the people of Flint. It was of the institutions that, in the end, decided to be on the right side of history: Hurley Medical Center, Michigan State University, etc. Dr Mona's descriptions of how people's names are dragged through the mud because they chose to speak up are not inaccurate — and far more common than we'd like to know. For me, this book was about that critical moment — what institutions would stand with her, and which would either hound her or choose to stay silent? There are many lenses through which one can read this book, and I would not presume to tell readers what their lens should be. Consider the above as you read this story—which you really should read—and ask yourself if the places you venerate in your own community will stand up for what's right when it becomes inconvenient.Ultimately, that is the story Dr Mona imparts to me.(PS Mona — well done.)

I was drawn to this play after watching “Shakespeare in Love.†Early in the movie lines are recited from the play that are quite entrancing: “What is light, if Silvia be not seen? // What is joy, if Silvia be not by? // Unless it be to think that she is by // And feed upon the shadow of perfection. // Except I be by Silvia in the night, // There is no music in the nightingale; // Unless I look upon Silvia in the day, // There is no day for me to look upon.†Alas, these words from Act III, and the song in Act IV, (“Who is Silvia? What is she, // That all our swains commend her?â€) are the highlights of a play that most critics place at or near the bottom of the Shakespeare canon. The play is a comedy and therefore a love story, but the focus is on the friendship of two men--two buddies as it were--as in the plot of a Paul Newman/Robert Redford movie. Also, the heroine is not Silvia but Julia. The buddies are “The Two Gentlemen of Veronaâ€â€”Proteus and Valentine. Proteus loves Julia and she loves him, while Valentine is destined to fall in love with Silvia. This being a comedy, Proteus falls for Silvia too, and Julia must disguise herself as a boy to win him back. If you’re familiar with Shakespeare’s comedies, girls disguised as boys is often part of the plot, but it was with this play where cross-dressing began. Valentine goes to Milan to be “tutor’d in the world.†Soon after, Proteus follows to meet up with him in the court of Milan. There, Proteus forgets about his love for Julia and falls head-over-heels in love with Valentine’s girl Silvia, and to entice her affections proceeds to disparage his best friend. Nice guy, huh? This betrayal leads to Valentine’s exile from the court. Determined to win him back, Julia dresses as a boy and sets off to find him. The plucky and fetching Julia; the wit of Launce, the clown, and his dog Crab can’t save the plot’s absurd and implausible twist wherein Valentine offers the love of his life (Silvia) to Proteus, just after Proteus was about to rape her. How’s that for friendship? And how’s that for love? Valentine doesn’t bother to ask Silvia how she feels about being offered up to his friend as so much chattel, never mind that she would have been raped had not Valentine and Julia arrived in the nick of time. As you might expect, “Two Gentlemen of Verona†is among the bard’s “problem comedies,†and is not performed all that often. In the introduction to the Pelican Shakespeare, Mary Beth Rose of the University of Illinois at Chicago sums up the play with: “In the ‘shallow story of deep love’ (I.I. 21), about which Valentine taunts Proteus at the beginning of ‘The Two Gentlemen of Verona,’ the actual ‘deep love’ is that between male friends.†Indeed. She also cites the plays “exquisite lyricism†as the play’s saving grace.
The item description has now been fixed. When I bought it it said that there was a copy of the original text and on opposite pages the modern translation. However, when I got it it was the original text, but you could click on the text to get the translation. When it worked it was awkward and annoying. However, it often didn't work and the translation would be messed up (gibberish) or would be for the wrong verse. I ordered it about 10 months ago. I wonder if so many good reviews are from the print version or if the issues have been fixed. Hope you have better luck.
"The Tempest", Shakespeare's play about betrayal, magic, and revenge, gets the graphic novel treatment courtesy of Campfire Classics, adaptor Max Popov, and illustrators Amit Tayal and Manikandan. This graphic novel nicely captures the essentials of the play: its drama, its love story, its humor, and its magical ending. When a sudden storm drives the King of Naples and the Duke of Milan and their followers near a mysterious island, the mighty magician Prospero grasps an opportunity to avenge an old wrong. The nature of that ancient wrong is revealed to Prospero's beautiful and now grown daughter Miranda, that her father was once himself Duke of Milan, but was betrayed by a usurping brother and a neighboring king. Prospero and his young daughter were exiled and left to die at sea.Now Prospero finds all his old enemies under his control. Using his magical powers and those of the spirit Ariel, Prospero unleashes an ambitious agenda, to punish his enemies, to find a suitable husband for his daughter, and to escape the island. With the shipwrecked party scattered around the island, Prospero shifts his focus from task to task, using his magic to change people's hearts and minds."The Tempest" is a complicated drama, but this graphic novel delivers the story in an understandable and entertaining way, including the author's essential point that change and not revenge is Prospero's ultimate objective; recommended.
I really can't speak highly enough of this version of The Tempest. The notes on the text, the layout, and the modern typeface combined with First Folio spelling and punctuation make this the most actable version of a Shakespeare play that I've seen. They've even laid it out so that each page of text is faced with a blank page, perfect for writing blocking, text, and direction notes. The only small gripe I have, and it is a minute one, is that the binding could be sturdier - the cover of mine is busily in the process of falling off, and we're not halfway through the rehearsal process yet. But even given that, I would rate this 6 stars if I could. In the future, I will be using the Applause First Folio versions of any Shakespeare plays where the definitive text is FF.

As an experienced engineer and programmer, this pocket reference has many of the essential syntax I need to write and maintain PERL scripts. There is ample blank pages in the back where I have jotted down several good notes and one line code examples that I commonly use. I purchased 3 extra copies of this book for my coworkers. They love it.
You buy these books to have a quick way of finding the right syntax in a specific language. They are less helpful as a teaching guide or a cookbook of solutions ... so you need a different book for that. But these pocket guides definitely help a little and they don't sot much. For what it is, I give it 4 stars. It would be 5 if the info was a little less dense with more short examples for context.
as expected
Good pocket reference; used it several times in the past few weeks since I received it.
Great, handy Reference
Great quick reference for Perl
I bought this as a gift for a co-worker. It is a great language reference for anyone that is going to be looking at a lot of perl
The reference book is good in size and content without too much required reading. Just as I expected from a pocket reference book from O-Reilly.

I have all the books that Robert Morris has written. He was one of our pastors when I attended Shady Grove Church in Grand Prairie, Texas some years ago. He was always my favorite pastor. He talks on my level which is simple and is easy to understand. God has given him much wisdom in many areas.I haven't had a chance to read this book, but I know it will help me to remember what comes out of my mouth. So often negative words issue forth before I can think about how they represent the kingdom of God. We are judged by the Lord for our words as well as by other Christians. I think most Christians who understand the concept judge those of us who speak before thinking as to how faith-filled our words are. It may not be that we don't know better, we just speak before we think! The book came really fast and is a new book.
This book is the one thing that was missing from my understanding of the power of words. We live in a spirit world and what we say, has reactions that either are good or are bad. I now understand that what I say is what I will get. If I am healed then I must say it. If I am baptized in the Holy Spirit then I must say it .Robert Morris nails this way of life in this book. I encourage anyone who has questions about this word filled world we live in to get the book and let God reveal his kingdom laws to you.
I am always curious about what other authors have to say about words and Mr. Morris has a lot to say and its all good information for all of us to take hold of. So many people don't realize how they have hurt their children by saying whatever is on their minds if only they would think before they would speak. Sure our parents have done the same but hopefully most of them were kind with their words, encouraging and with love. Well anyway today is no different because so many people of all different walks of life are missing the boat. We got slang and we got ghetto and we got teenagers whose languages I don't even know what they are saying forget about what they mean. Mr. Morris gives great insight to how words can impact your life for the better. Even when you speak you can speak better and think better because you are more aware of your words. Even God said renew your mind, you will bless your life with goodness with a positive outlook on life when you learn to speak truth.
This is a good reference for a very important subject. For most of us we do not realize the great power our words have with in what we say. The book has helped me to watch more carefully what I'm saying and even how I'm expressing something. Robert has a lot of scripture to go along with what he is saying. I recommend we all take more care in our words and this book helps to make one aware of ones words.
I think most believers know their words have power, and everybody understands that words can hurt or help...but this book takes you to a place of greater understanding. I was convicted and I was encouraged- most importantly I am changed. This book proves the concept of the power of our words because Robert Morris' words did some surgery on me- and they would you too.I love Pastor Morris' writing- he writes to educate, build up and edify and this book is another example of his God-given skill. I have copied small portions of this book and put them on facebook and twitter for my friends, and emailed privately some others- it's that good. I am certainly encouraging my teens to read this. It will save them so much grief!
More people must hear this practical, down to earth, teacher who makes the Bible come alive and challenges us not to leave our minds and God'given brains at home when we discuss and study God's Word/ the Bible. He makes the scenes come alive and makes one think, this is fun/ I am receiving something from this teaching. this makes sense. Listen to Robert Morris. He has been through a lot in his life before Christ/ and now knows the Lord has given him a heart for people who are struggling and the Way is not as difficult as it might seem through the grace of God.
Excellent Book! I need to recommend it to everyone!
I bought this book because I watched Robert's sermons on The Power of Words on TBN for several days in a row. He makes sense! It is a good book and I'm enjoying it. I thank the seller for providing a top-quality used book - it was in pristine condition & I am more than pleased.
This book is my first exposure to Robert Morris, and I am glad I bought this book. Its writing style is one that a reader can go through quickly, but it's loaded with Bible-based truths.I particularly liked the chapter in which Morris lists and describes 10 ways the tongue can be used to sin, and here too Morris uses solid Scriptural backing.Very, very good book; I liked it also because thanks to it, I learned of new verses I had not encountered before.Read it - you'll learn how dangerous an unbridled tongue can be, but you'll also be encouraged by how much life and fruit can come about if you submit your tongue to the Holy Spirit.

A Merciful DeathMercy Kilpatrick, Book #1Kendra Elliot5 StarsSynopsis:FBI special agent Mercy Kilpatrick has been waiting her whole life for disaster to strike. A prepper since childhood, Mercy grew up living off the land—and off the grid—in rural Eagle’s Nest, Oregon. Until a shocking tragedy tore her family apart and forced her to leave home. Now a predator known as the cave man is targeting the survivalists in her hometown, murdering them in their homes, stealing huge numbers of weapons, and creating federal suspicion of a possible domestic terrorism event. But the crime scene details are eerily familiar to an unsolved mystery from Mercy’s past.Sent by the FBI to assist local law enforcement, Mercy returns to Eagle’s Nest to face the family who shunned her while maintaining the facade of a law-abiding citizen. There, she meets police chief Truman Daly, whose uncle was the cave man’s latest victim. He sees the survivalist side of her that she desperately tries to hide, but if she lets him get close enough to learn her secret, she might not survive the fallout… (Goodreads)Review:The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. Mercy is one tough lady. She has had a rough childhood and she left home many years ago. But she was able to make something of herself and she is one tough FBI agent. When she is on a case, she does not back down and she will do whatever it takes to solve the case. Truman, the police chief, also has a past that he is trying to overcome. For him, the killings are personal because his uncle has been murdered. He will do anything to find the killer and bring justice for his uncle’s death. He knows that teaming up with Mercy will improve his chances immensely. I enjoyed the interactions between Mercy and Truman, and we got more of an insight into their personalities through these interactions. The secondary characters were also well developed and add another dimension to the story. The writing styles flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book, I felt like I was seeing things through the eyes of a bystander. The mystery was carried on well throughout the book and there were enough red herrings thrown in that I kept changing my mind about the murders.I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted romantic suspense. I have read many books by this author and they have all been top notch. She is at the top of my list as a must read author.I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I felt like this book was just ok. It was actually very depressing. The town was depressing, family that doesn't act like family, the thing with the sister, the thing with the brother. I didn't dislike Mercy, but I didn't love her either. Her character just didn't stand out. I don't know how to explain it. Not standoffish but something. I guess it's because of the way she was raised. I can understand that, but I still didn't like it or warm up to her. Unfortunately, there was no loving in this book except a couple of little kisses. The thing with Levi made no sense to me. He seemed bright so his secret seemed ridiculous. The stuff with Rose was hard to take and it was way too much!!! Good grief it was WAY too much. Grrr, it's hard writing this without spoilers but the story seem to fall apart during this time because of the Levi issue. It just didn't make sense that there are things that he knows, yet waits hours to say anything.Anyway I didn't care for it. I will probably give the next book a try just because I usually love this author's books. Right now I feel like I need to go read something to get myself out of this depressing mood.
The author was doing fine, introducing her characters and their backgrounds and developing a decent whodunit. Then all her main characters, including cops and FBI agents (for pete's sake) developed stomach issues and weak knees every time something even vaguely surprising or threatening occurred. From the halfway point on virtually every chapter had someone with "knees turned to jello" or instant acid reflux of some sort. That, combined with the bodice ripping style of writing about the increasing romantic involvement of the two main characters, made for an unintentionally humorous ending.
The story was just "ok". There were just too many soft spots in the way the investigation went. The interviews of witnesses was weak. I could think of at least 10 other questions that should have been asked and I'm certainly not in law enforcement. I couldn't really love the main character either. She was supposed to be tough but was usually crying or shaking . Also, there was no real detective work. They just sort of fell into every clue. What FBI agent would yell from the driveway "hello, anyone home" toward the house you think a murder suspect and his hostage are in? Probably won't read the next in the series.
This was a fantastic book I would have gladly paid $15 for. It has great character development, well thought out plot and writing, and good twists and turns. I love that the strong woman character could still have a softer side eventually. I am so sick of reading other books with a woman as the main character who never gets hurt or barely shows emotion until book 7 haha! This had such a great balance that it felt more realistic. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be buying the second book immediately!! Great job Kendra Elliot!
Lately, I've been bogged down with books that are oh-so-simplistic, what with the torrent of folks self-publishing. Many of those writers are great, of course - but some books I encounter could've been written...far better...to put it kindly. This is NOT one of those. It is smartly-adapted, with excellent character development to match the fast-paced story at hand. I am going to purchase and download the second Special Agent Mercy Kirkpatrick novel immediately!!! ðŸ‘💯👌â¤ï¸
It takes quite an author for me to drop everything and read with no breaks. This was my first foray into Mercy Kilpatrick’s world and it most certainly won’t be my last. Great character development, interesting storyline. I felt drawn into this world right from the start. Now I’m off to start book 2!
