From the Author

The idea for this collection of 101 extraordinary tales from the Kruger National Park arose purely from envy. I have never considered myself particularly lucky in the Park - but then nor have I had the misadventure of a breakdown, a close shave or an animal attack. I am, however, always flabbergasted by the tales of other visitors, recounted - with perhaps a smattering of exaggeration - in rest camps in the evenings, or shared through open car windows when I've asked, 'Seen anything interesting today?' Surely, I thought, others would be as interested as I am in the tales of those for whom Kruger has dealt a more thrilling hand? When I first set about collecting stories for the book four years ago, I never anticipated the sheer wealth of incredible tales, accounts and anecdotes I would receive. I certainly never anticipated that the spectrum of stories would extend so much further than just animal sightings. The book this has become is an entirely different beast from my first humble imaginings. Much like the Park itself, the whole somehow feels greater than the sum of its parts: there are stories of heartbreak, tragedy, high jinks, disappointment and astonishing luck; there are stories from the rest camps, the dirt and tarred roads, the watering holes, the picnic spots and the walking trails; and there are funny stories, curious stories, sad stories, creepy stories and stories that you'll find almost impossible to believe. But each one, I hope, captures and shares a little of the wonder and the thrill we all feel when we pass through the gates, full of anticipation of what lies ahead, into the great expanse of one of Africa's greatest treasures.Hundreds and hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds, from across South Africa and the world, took the time and effort to open their memory vaults, pen their Kruger experiences and submit them for consideration. The criteria for selecting the stories were simple: they should all be extraordinary in one way or another; they should all take place in the Kruger National Park itself, not one of the adjoining reserves of Greater Kruger; they should only take place on any of the publicly accessible tourist roads, rest camps, picnic sites or walking trails; and importantly, they should primarily be the tales of ordinary Park visitors like you and me - not game rangers, field guides or any of the other lucky people who work and live in the Park. The result, I hope, is a celebration of Kruger and what makes it so special amongst all the national parks in Africa. That an extraordinary encounter could just as easily happen to a family in a two-door hatchback on their first sojourn into the Park as a hardened Park veteran in a dusty 4x4, or a wealthy foreign tourist on the back of an open safari vehicle, is evidence of Kruger's unique egalitarian streak. Yes, Kruger is the great safari leveller, and this book is the proof of that. Whether you dip in and out of it, or read it from cover to cover, you'll find yourself excitedly optimistic (or justifiably terrified) that the next time you're in the Park, it could be you...

In preparing to go to a South Africa I selected this book as Kruger was our main destination. The stories were so interesting and often times hilarious - especially being from everyday visitors to the park. One can learn the typical animal sighting and what's unusual in the park. I was so excited on our first day in the park to see the remains of a zebra that a leopard had pulled into the tree to eat something I knew nothing about until reading these tales. Learning the mistakes that led to mishaps I felt "better prepared" to not make the same mistakes. On my actual trip when driving into our remote lodge we encountered our first elephant and when he began shaking his head and starting to charge I knew we were in a dangerous situation and told my husband to get out of the way as quick as possible. I was hoping to not see any of the spitting Cobras and can say I saw a juvenile black mamba from the safety of our vehicle. The tales of encounters with the deadliest snake in South Africa were much more colorful so I was delighted to see one safely! If you are staying in a rest camp there are many tales to prepare you - we didn't have time to stay at a rest camp but would have loved to. Warning - do not read if you are a "worrier" as my husband. I chose not to share some of the more frightening tales as he might change his mind about going on this adventure. Use it as an introduction to the geography and animals of Kruger and to better prepare you for what you might see or encounter in the park!! I felt this read made my trip so much more enjoyable!

This book is a collection of stories about the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Each story is told by the people who experienced the events first hand – some of them are hilarious, some are barely believable and some will make you cringe in fear, but all of them capture the essence of South Africa’s most famous national park – it’s beauty, wildness and exceptional game viewing. Some of the stories are also accompanied by photographs, which further add to the enjoyment. The stories in the book are also a reminder that despite the nearly 2 million visitors to Kruger every year, it is at its heart filled with wild animals who are beautiful and astounding but ultimately unpredictable.I loved this collection of stories, it made me laugh (almost hysterically) at times, it also made me gasp in horror – in particular the picture of the python curled up over the engine of a small car… I think I also learnt a few things, the one that comes to mind is that bats like to live in thatch and snakes like to hunt bats, and the last thing you want to run into in an enclosed space is a Mozambican spitting cobra…I would recommend this book for anyone planning a visit to the Kruger and also for people who have already been lucky enough to experience all that Kruger has to offer. In fact I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good read, whether they have plans to visit the Kruger or not – it is filled with great and real stories and makes for a fun read.

A fun and interesting read, especially because I am currently living for six months about half an hour from the Punta Maria gate for northern Kruger Park. We have visited the park three times while in SA and the book adds highlights to any Kruger visit. The stories are real, true, and typical of Kruger. The book is easy to read and great for short bursts as each story is brief and stands alone. 101of them is super! I liked that the author sectioned the stories geographically because the park is huge and I was able to read about the separate areas I went to prior to going.. Obviously, a book this specific in topic will not perhaps appeal to everyone. However, I recommend it to anyone who likes animals and their interactions with humans. Makes a great bathroom reader. The book is compiled from actual people's personal experiences in their own words so is a bit unusual to its credit.

Having had the privilege of traveling from the US to Kruger National Park in South Africa numerous times I thought I had seen my share of great sightings and experienced once in a life time events in the park but Jeff Gordon has collected tales that had me gasping in astonishment, laughing out loud and even shedding a few tears. If you have been to the park, are thinking of going to the park or if you just love reading great real life stories of those who have gone before you, this is the book to read. I read it on Kindle but will definitely purchase the book in soft cover as well to add to my collection of great books!

If you haven't bought it yet you should be ashamed! 101 stories --- mostly memories of people who have had experiences in-situ --- brilliantly told in short (really short and crisp and to the point --- well done) stories about individual or family events while visiting the world's greatest wild life reserve. Some dramatic and some light-hearted, but all of them colorful and awash with the smell and sounds of --- the bush! Will some of the proceeds benefit the near-extinct Rhino? Not sure but here's hoping. My greatest fear is that soon we shall only see the rhino in zoos, and the rhino will only experience existence in cages. Kruger is the last room in Nature's House and, it needs attention.

As a frequent visitor to South African parks we found this book most entertaining and fascinating. A very good light read proving that anything can happen in the parks but one always seems to come out on the right side! It also reflects the gross stupidity of some visitors to the parks who will hopefully heed these warnings and obey the park rules in future. The reason park rules are made becomes abundantly clear as one reads through the book! We wish we could have had some of the experiences written about in the book, and are equally grateful NOT to have had some of them! We would recommend this book to anyone visiting game parks in Africa.

The Grain of the Clay: Reflections on Ceramics and the Art of Collecting

Review

“Weiss himself is a genuine aficionado. He writes with knowledge and enthusiasm about many aspects of Japanese aesthetics, from its core principles of seasonality, sensuality, and ‘equilibrium of disequilibrium’ to regional ‘clay flavors’ (tsuchi-aji) that he interestingly compares to the notion of terroir in French wines. This book will gratify those who share Weiss’s sensibilities.” (Crafts)“The book is an engaging exploration of the meaning and practice of collecting through Weiss’s own personal relationship with Japanese ceramics. It provides a critical examination of how and why we collect, encouraging us to deepen our appreciation of the art of ceramic objects.” (Ceramic Review)“In a book both well-written and highly descriptive, the author transcends the object, the guinomi (a small ceramic sake cup), to question its relationship to all its surroundings. The guinomi comes to represent art and nature. . . . I highly recommend this book to those interested in collecting, ceramics, or seeking insight into an art collector’s world.” (Kyoto Journal)“Weiss urges readers to make collections part of their lives. . . . Collections tell us more about owners, institutions, and even governments than the objects themselves, their acquisition reflecting everything from discerning taste and refinement to venality. This book gives us the chance to ponder all these things—to make an orderly collection of our thoughts.” (Japan Times)

Highly recommended for anybody interested in looking behind the pure esthetic appeal and fascination of Japanese ceramics.Great combination of several points of view and cross-linking several fields.Somehow brought me back to my enjoyment and pleasure of reading "Gödel, Escher, Bach" years ago. Finally, I would like to recommend Malte Härting's "Einfachheit: Eine kulturphilosophische Untersuchung der japanischen Kaiseki-Küche" to anybody interested more in the culinary aspects and references described in the book.

A uniquely insightful book on what distinguishes "excellent" Japanese ceramics from "good" pieces. Suitable for both general readers and specialists, especially those with a background in philosophical aesthetics.

I love both of the main characters. Faith is an incredibly strong woman. She has learned how to survive without a man in charge of her household because of her strength. She knows how to lead and she expects those around her to follow her instructions. She helps immensely in the difficult situations that she faces during the beginning of the war.Matthew is everything you can ask for in a hero in a book. He is strong, handsome, and very dedicated to his beliefs and doing all that he can to support the cause. Throw in there the fact that he is always willing to protect Faith is just perfect. The storyline is captivating. I was drawn into it and anxious to find out how things turn out for Faith and Matthew. It was a nice fictional story built into the history of the Revolutionary War. Seeing George Washington and Benjamin Franklin brought into the story and interacting with Faith and Matthew was wonderful.I thoroughly enjoyed reading the author’s note at the end of the book to see what she had to say about the use of actual historical characters in her book. It was great to read her thoughts and see a glimpse into how she views history.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. I have chosen to write this review to express my personal opinion.Disclaimer: *Disclosure of Material Connection: I received a copy of this book for free in the hope that I would mention/review it on my blog. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. Another great installment in the Daughters of the Mayflower series. I loved The Patriot Bride. Faith and Mathew were great characters and I enjoyed getting to know them. I enjoyed the strong willed faith and her courage to be a messenger for the Patriots. I also enjoyed the relationship between Faith and George Washington. I really got a kick out of the part with Ben Franklin when he helped Mathew, you'll understand when you read the book. I enjoyed this Authors writing and look forward to reading more of her books.I give The Patriot Bride 5 stars for its enjoyable read.I would recommend this book to lovers of Fiction/Christian/Romance/Historical reads.

Good, light, well researched historical fiction. Likeable characters.

My thoughts: I do love to dive into a good book that takes me back in time to experience in my mind's eye events complete with imagined sights, sounds, feelings, smells. That is just what Kimberley Woodhouse has done with this short novel about the time just before the American Colonies declared their independence from Britain.War was brewing. People were not sure who could be trusted and what to say and to whom. It was a fearful time.Woodhouse deftly weaves towering historical figures such as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin into this tale. She has gracious ladies who hold Bible studies and Bible readings in their home whilst gowned in beautiful silk gowns and sipping tea. She has these same gracious ladies slipping out into the night on errands to carry messages to spies. It was a dangerous time, but also a glorious time when the American colonists overthrew the tyranny of Britain. This is a short, gentle read with a nice helping of romance thrown into the mix. And it is another opportunity to read about descendants of those who journeyed to America aboard the Mayflower.I received a complimentary copy from the publisher to facilitate this review. Opinions are my own and are freely given.

I was so excited to read another of Daughters of the Mayflower Series. I knew The Patriot Bride would be exciting because Kimberley Woodhouse also wrote the first in this series, The Mayflower Bride. If you like a well written romantic, historical, fiction book, with lots of excitement and adventure, this is a must read.Faith Jackson, a very rich widow and Matthew Weber, a close friend of George Washington are both spies for the Patriot cause. If you have read the other books in this series, Faith's maiden name is Lytton. That is where she fits in the family tree that connects her to the Mayflower ancestors. Faith was best friends with George Washington growing up, even though he was several years older. Their farms were next to each other and their fathers were very close. When Faith was orphaned due to a fire in her home, she became the ward of George. He was only 20 at the time and his father too had passed. The story contains several other characters from history. Benjamin Franklin, William Franklin, and Paul Revere, to name a few. Whether parts were actual or written using artistic liberties, I found this story exciting and entertaining. I would recommend this book.I received this book from Barbour Publishing through NetGalleys. The opinions expressed in this book are my own

Love this book so much that I started gifting them to new employees when they start. I am in event and catering industry and this book gives GREAT advice and breaks it down into easy bullet points and also gives great references.

The author has some outdated notions when it comes to sales techniques. In particular, she only discusses extroverts and seems to go out of her way to focus on exteaverts and their ability to sell. If you're going to market a book to an entire industry of professionals, take time to include a variety of personality types or change the title of the book so it reflects your focus on extroverts.

I've been in the event industry for 35 years, 9K events later I purchased Booked It! for my sales staff as Meryl Snow is an icon in our industry. This book was actually two separate stories: the Franklin expedition (and various others around the same time) then the story of the 1984 scientific endeavor to investigate the tragedy. The first part is good enough though not particularly well written. The second part of the book went in to far too much detail about the scientific team's efforts. The book could have used a much better editor as it seemed at times it was simply trying its best to get to 250 pages. Ironically, probably the best part of the book is the 10 page epilogue at the very end. It wraps everything up nicely and puts it into context with other exploration disasters (namely De Long) of the time. Why could the other 250 pages not be as clear and succinct?

A classic of Franklinology. If you're interested in the fate of Franklin's men, this is a very readable place to start. The authors performed autopsies on the only three men for which complete skeletons and identities exist, because they died early in the expedition. Their discovery of very high lead levels in the bodies took the investigation in what must have happened to Franklin's men in a then-new direction--lead (probably) in the canned provisions. Not everyone agrees, I understand, but no one can doubt the rigor of their work.

Overall a worthwhile review of the history of 19th Century artic explorations, and the likely fate of the Franklin expedition. My minor gripes concern the 3rd person perspective of one of the authors (Beattie) and the somewhat ostentatious and annoyingly self-congratulatory description of the work by the forensic team. A lot of tangential detail hailing work of specific team members along with some lame attempts at creating drama by including a few situations faced by the modern investigators. A good read but could have been more concise and more scholarly in tone.

I'm a polar exploration junkie, so I've read an ungodly amount of books about Sir John Franklin, James Clark Ross, Charles Francis Hall, and other famous explorers. Somehow, I always come back to this one.Even an interesting event like the Franklin Expedition can fall victim to history writers who make their subject boring. This volume is not like that. It's genuinely entertaining and informative. It packs a lot of facts at you from the beginning to (what is doubtfully) the end, but it doesn't feel like a textbook. I just wish it was longer! Hopefully another volume will be released as developments are made in the case. You were probably introduced to this subject in some way by seeing or hearing about the Beechey Island mummies. But do you know their stories? The archaeological section of this book goes into detail about the three bodies and how analysis of their tissues has helped archaeologists understand what happened to their fellow crewmen. In all, this is one of the few historical nonfiction books I'd recommend even to people who aren't fond of the genre. It can be gruesome, as the subject itself is gruesome, but it's a good read.

I have read many books on polar exploration, & while this may not have had the gripping intensity of those written by early explorers & their incredible fights for survival (which many lost), I still read it in an afternoon, because I didn't want to put it down. I am also intrigued by books on forensic sciences, so those with both interests will find it a real treat. It discusses the various early attempts to find evidence of the Franklin expedition, and nicely segues into the recent (1980s+) finding of the three known graves & the scientific work done on the remains. Beattie treats the frozen men with respect, and the examinations & reinterments are admirable. The writing is quite arresting, especially for a non-fiction book, such as when Battie describes moving one of the bodies; As they carry the body of the first man exhumed, John Torrington, his (Torrington's) head lolls on Beattie's shoulder & the two end up eye-to-eye; the scene is remarkably affecting & eerie for Beattie & for the reader (at least this reader). There are several photographs of the bodies, which may be hard on the excessively squeamish. But they are amazing.I was really curious at seeing Margaret Atwood listed as an author...I haven't read much of hers since "Handmaid's Tale" & she seemed a bizarre inclusion. However, her Prologue & Epilogues really add to the book.At one point, Beattie describes a sample of a Clostridium bacteria sample that was taken from one of the men's intestines; they cultured the bacteria & it lived just fine after being frozen for nearly 150 years. What is really frightening is that it turned out to be antibiotic-resistant...even though it first lived long, long before antibiotics were developed. The theory is that resistance to such a powerful toxin as lead gave the bacteria broad resistance. Terrifying to think that we're not only developing strain after strain of Ab-resistant bacteria from overuse of Antibiotics, but could be creating even more resistant strains than we know from all the toxins we pump into our ecosystems. It is truly fascinating, in a horrible way, to find that most/many of the hideous ailments & some of the bizarre decisions in polar explorations (i.e. Greely's apparently bumbling leadership) turn out to perhaps be a product of a "great new technical advancement;" tinned food with lead solder....lead poisoning. As Atwood mentions in her Epilogue, the book demolishes the romantic assumption that "...great men die only of great causes." For many men who braved insanely difficult conditions to be laid low by canned goods just seems...wrong.

If it wasn't for melatonin, I would have kept reading it until the morning. (I have read a number of books, about the challenges of the Southern Pole) It started with the classic "Endurance". Shackleton's story was amazing to read. Then I watched "The Terror" on AMC, and wanted a more factual account of what happened to Franklin. This book helps answer questions from over 150 years ago! Back to searching for my lost sock.

I watched season 1 of Terror. Afterward, found it's based on true events. Not sure why I never knew this amazing story but now I do. This book is incredible at the history and factual information about the Frankin expedition and others of the time, those who tried to find them, and those who eventually did find them...so may years after they died.

It took me a while but I finally finished Donald Kraybill's The Upside-Down Kingdom. Kraybill is Distinguished College Professor, and Senior Fellow of Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, which is a pretty impressive title, at least for its length, and one of the foremost experts on Anabaptism and especially the Amish in the world. The Upside-Down Kingdom (UPK for short) is not a book on Anabaptism per se but rather a look at the way that Christ's Kingdom is in every respect the exact opposite of what the world values. Up is down, great is least.UPK is a fascinating book and challenging to boot. Some of the background information that Kraybill shares is absolutely incredible and really fleshes out portions of Scripture. He does a great job of drawing out from Scripture some crucial points regarding status, power, wealth, etc. that we take for granted and showing the reader where we have strayed far from the intent of Scripture. It is a pretty devastating indictment of our traditional church culture in the West and should make any open-minded Christian ask some serious questions and take a deep introspective look. There are a few slow points but the book as a whole flows beautifully and reads easily while still be meaty. That isn't to say that I don't have concerns. I do with every book but UPK has some issues that are especially concerning. First Kraybill seems pretty comfortable with traditional church structures. He certainly has criticisms of them but he seems to miss in places that the very traditions we cling to in many ways hamper living as citizens of the Upside-Down Kingdom. He also takes great liberties in assigning motivations and emotions, especially to Christ, that are absent from the text. What Jesus, the eternal God, is thinking in a situation is not a topic I am comfortable making definitive statements about. My bigger concern has to do with how Christ is represented and how His cross is understood. The language about the deity of Christ and the relationship between God the Father and God the Son is a bit sloppy and imprecise. Someone could read this book and perhaps get the impression that God is the Father is God and that Jesus is something less than God. His treatment of the cross is even more troubling. Statements like this for example... "...Jesus demolished the entire sacrificial system when he announced full forgiveness, direct from God - any time, any place without a bloody sacrifice." (The Upside-Down Kingdom, pg. 248)Kraybill seems to be saying that the sacrificial system was overturned symbolically and finally when Jesus overturned the money changers tables in the temple and that the cross is primarily the result of the social unrest caused by a life of radical service. The problem is that this is doesn't match Scripture which tells us that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins (Heb 9:22) and that Jesus brought peace between man and God by His shed blood on the cross (Col 1:20). So there are certainly some places where red flags popped up in an otherwise outstanding book.So in summary I would absolutely recommend The Upside-Down Kingdom to most Christians but I would add a note of caution. Read with your eyes (and Scriptures!) wide open and be discerning in places where Kraybill starts to stray from orthodox teachings. I would caution a newer believer who is not solidly grounded in the Bible to be very cautious here. Perhaps read in the context of a study group UPK would work but I would be concerned that a new believer would miss some of the red flags I saw. I don't want to give the impression that this is not an outstanding book because it absolutely is and one I highly recommend. Just read with caution, which is good advice for any book!

"The Upside-Down Kingdom" by Donald B. Kraybill is an excellent book challenging all Christians to radically live out the Sermon on the Mount and other teachings of Jesus Christ. Mr. Kraybill, a sociologist and Christian of Anabaptist/Mennonite background, correctly and lovingly challenges Christians to abandon the philosophies of this world in order to accurately represent the Kingdom of God on earth. The Upside-Down Kingdom shows that the Kingdom of God really is opposed to any worldly system of thinking or government. To win, you must lose. To live, you must die. To gain, you must live. Every one of Christ's commands are the direct opposite of those taught by the leading thinkers of the world. If Christians are to impact their generation for the Kingdom of God we must start living like true ambassadors of the Kingdom.I give this book four starts because I thought it was slightly repetitive at points and not quite as conservative in some of its views as I would have liked. The main instance of this is when the author contrasts the Greek definitions of "love" in a way that I think stretches sound exegesis. This is common in modern evangelicalism but is really not as significant as Mr. Kraybill would have us believe. However, this book is still a great, easy read and will certainly challenge those who want to live like Jesus did.

In order for us to have a clear understanding the theology of Kingdom we have to know who Jesus are without any cultural, theological, spiritual, or philosophical assumptions, or what the author calls detours around Jesus. We have to know Him from his own story and words. Therefore, Kraybill's the theology of Kingdom is based on the story of Jesus Christ and centered on His ministry. He provides a biblical framework for understanding the kingdom. The author calls the Kingdom that Jesus preached the upside down kingdom of radically different principles and values, because its realization stands in contrast to the common ways of this world. The king of this Kingdom is God (the author uses Jesus sometimes), and its principle are Jubilees, Sabbath and Shalom that were insinuated in Jesus' words and message, and their main goal is to elevate men and women from the social, political, religious monarchal, economical labels or boxes to the level of siblings in the Kingdom. However, these principles contradict with the principles of the world. He explains that the political and religious power plays had drastic effects on the economic life of the majority poor. Therefore, Jesus himself has to face the three spheres of social power: politics, economics and religion. The author believes that Jesus teaching on kingdom is personal and realistic, and it is not to be lived aggregately but collectively. By personal, I mean that God rules in believer's heart and relationships to elevate them to a new status. By realistic I mean it could be applied to our live wherever and whenever human live. We can envision this in the church as assembly of people who are citizens of the Kingdom, and who adopt the idea and the values of the Kingdom in any culture they reside in. Because believers are, like any other human beings, social, they need a social structure to meet their needs and the needs of others. The church is the social structure that the values and culture of the Kingdom are practiced and passed on to others. Therefore, church as a "social vehicle" of the Kingdom culture uses its "servant structure" to accomplish Kingdom's mission, which is church's work. Its mission is to be the prophetic voice in the world against social discrimination, political oppression, religious scandals, and economic injustice according to God's purpose and will. In another level, the author criticizes the institutional church. He believes that Kingdom of God is above any place, nation, and culture. However, as the author get to the end of this point, he ultimately realized that we need to periodically evaluate the rule and purpose of its activities.Being from an Anabaptists background, the author articulates very well the Kingdom children's respond to the violent. Responding to violent with violent will naturally produce greater loss for both parties. A quick peak to the history, we will find that violent never solved problems. When we do not respond violently, we might think it is weakness, but according to Jesus Teaching it is power. Responding to violent with love serves many purposes. Firstly, we do not give the perpetrator what he or she intended by acting violently. Secondly, we teach the aggressor a lesson that some of them might not be familiar with. Thirdly, we are showing our ultimate obedience to our Master who commanded us to love our enemy. The author bases his argument on the principle of non-reciprocal love (agape). Agape is a love that does not expect something in return. It is like God's love for us.What Kraybill makes it clear is that the kingdom is not compromising to culture, powers or convenience; rather, its main goal is to transform them. The only way to that is through what he calls them the triple symbols, basin, cross, and tomb. The symbol of basin represents what is known recently by the servanthood leadership. Serving others without any regards to sex, nation, religion, and ethnicity is the core of the Kraybill's Kingdom Theology. This is not an easy task, because it will lead to the cross. But because we trust God, and we are accomplishing Kingdom's mission, the final word is for God. When the church adopts the triple symbol concept, its journey toward accomplishing its mission is not going to be a comfortable one.Looking at the political climate during the time, we will realize that the Jewish people were in desperately waiting for a king to liberate them from Romans. In the wilderness, Jesus had faced that temptation. He did not accept political authority that was offered to Him by the tempter. Instead, He chose to be a revolutionary. He was a revolutionary not in the Zealous type of rebel that used violence, but in violating Pharisees' laws and regulations that were above God's law, criticizing the false political tranquility of the Romans, and condemning the right-wing Sadducees lucrative temple operation. Serving others out of love was His policy. The second sphere that Jesus faced was religious power. The religious practice grew stale, empty, and lucrative. Jesus was tempted to reveal His Messianic secret to influence people to make a new movement or create a new religion. He might have struggled with this thought during His mission. Instead, again He preferred the role of the servant Savior. The third sphere was the economic power. Again and again Jesus preached against economic injustice that trampled the poor to benefit the rich. Jesus was tempted to use His power to feed the hunger and end the economic unjust. Instead, He chose to be the bread of life for all nations. His life, His way, and His teaching will form a new foundation of living.I read the book entirely, and I, without any doubt, can say that it is one of the most transforming books that I have read in English. It presents a universal theology of the Kingdom that could be applied to different contexts and understood in any given situation. The strengths of the Kraybill's theology of Kingdom is that it is a biblical theology, which could be applied to any church in any place in the world within their current context. Just as he provides context for the reader, he allows for contextual interpretation for those that wish to apply what they have learned from the text. And this might be the genius of this book. It never imposes context but rather exposes it. Moreover, the author incorporates his sociological education to bring to life in a very articulated and easy to understand language the historical, political, and social culture of the New Testament. My criticism of this book is that Kraybill seems to be ambivalent in his argument about the church. In one hand, he sees it as a servant structure for the Kingdom's mission. In the other hand, he does not seem happy with concept of the church. I believe that all human being's effort will fall short in living the faith. However, I also believe, that the church with all its shortcomings will remain the beloved bride of Christ. We cannot disvalue the rich meanings of the symbols of the church. At the same time, I agree with the author that we have to evaluate the meaning and purpose of these symbols periodically. The author also seems to accommodating from time to time for those who may yearn for personalized version of the Gospel of the kingdom and find this kind of interpretation repelling. The author theology fits best into the Anabaptist perspective of Church, State, and Public Justice. By taking Jesus words to heart, the church can become the prophetic voice in the community. Jesus called his disciples light and the salt of the world. Its mission is to add Kingdom's value and speak God's truth by loving the other and caring the community. The church already has a great deal of influence on people and communities' values. It is not expecting to benefit from this task financially, nor try to gain power over people whom she is serving. Rather to transform them to the image of Jesus. It is not going to be an accomplishable task. However, it is going to be an earthly time process. The test will show how faithful she will remain to her Master, "but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved."
