All throughout the year I spend as much time as possible in the woods of Vermont where I live, and this book has been a great help in interpreting and understanding the forest. Not all woods are the same - a day's hike in the woods can bring you through second growth, third growth, and old growth forest - each change distinctive and easily seen but almost always ignored by the hiker. Why is this part of the forest all second growth and a half-mile away there are few trees but much ground cover? Why is another part of the same forest covered with many ancient trees yet there is a large section of nothing but saplings right in the center of it? Tom Wessels has written a fine book that will make you curious and then knowledgeable about the changes you see in the woods.Every chapter starts with an etching that illustrates the type of forest disturbance that's explained in the chapter. The etching actually is a forensic illustration loaded with clues that you can examine and use to determine the past history of the forest and the types of events that caused it to be the way it is. It could be logging, fire, beavers, blowdowns, blight, or even farming. Some of the clues are almost Holmesian in their simplicity. For instance, some old, low damage to a tree may not indicate much, but if the damage is to a number of successive trees, they may indicate disturbance by logging since the tree wounds could have been caused by logging skidders; and that may give the reason only first growth or ground cover is to be seen.There is an excellent appendix with a New England chronology, reading list, a good summary of disturbance types and clues, a list of plant indicators, and a glossary.Use this book as a guide and interpreter of what you've seen in the forest, and I guarantee you will never look at a forest the same way again. The woods will be loaded with messages and clues and stories that only you will be able to see and decipher.Note: Even though this book is centered on New England forests many of the lessons it teaches can be applied to forested areas in other parts of the country as well.

This is, by far, the best book I've read about analyzing what you see in the woods. It's explained very clearly, and I must say, I felt much like Dr. Watson to Tom Wessels' Sherlock as I read it. It all seems so obvious after he explains the evidence, but before reading the explanation of each scene depicted, I felt it would be impossible to guess what the history of the landscape was. Thank you for this excellent, informative read!

This is an amazing book, you will never look at the forests around you the same way again. I read it over two years ago and still notice things in the woods which I normally would not have, and can still explain to people why a tree is growing a certain way. Probably still interesting if you don't live in New England, but with varying degrees of practicality depending on your location.

I'm from New England and I like to get out into the countryside. The woods and fields here are filled with all sorts of history and I expected that this book would help me put some chronology to what I can see. I've gotten only into Chapter Two so far, and it's been a fascinating trip!Even though the title says A Natural History of New England, it really focuses on central New England, which is perfect for me. Still, it can be used just about anywhere that people have settled (though some specific points may not apply).The book is more of a forensic guide to what has happened. The reader is presented with simplified, but elegant, drawings of landscape at the beginning of a chapter, and the author then presents questions about what is represented and what may have happened to create the particular landscape. Then, bit by bit, he explains that the type of scarring on this tree may have been caused by fire, or it may have been caused by logging. Now, which one is it? Look at this other clue here. And notice how that apple tree has many branches down low, but then has a strong trunk above them with few branches. What do you suppose that means.Step by step, looking at a myriad of little things, he leads you to the solution of the mystery. It's like Sherlock Holmes taking stock of a crime scene and the possible suspects and witnesses and finally exclaiming, "It's you! Your cattle herding caused this landscape!" (Yes, I know Holmes never actually said the title quote.)

Not a page turner but to be read slowly and piecemeal. I am already looking at forests differently after the first 3 chapters. Very specific little nuances you would never think of now stand out and become the center of your attention on a walk. Just as keeping bees has made me look at flowering plants differently this has transformed the way I look at forests in a fun way

This elegantly laid out book is a delightful survey of forest ecology from the POV of a prof who loves traipsing about Vermont woods near his rural homestead. Though the format is essentially pedantic - each chapter being a tutorial exploration - the author's sense of ease mitigates classroom malaise. Wessels includes a lot of specific information about both plants - particularly trees - and history, including the doings of the pre-colonial Indians, in respect to his environs.A pleasure until the last chapter when the author misguidedly gets into global warming which he doesn't know much about, thus diverting the reader from Walden's Pond reverie to political ideology.Even most Yankees don't understand the ubiguitous stone walls in the middle of the forest, not realizing the whole region had been practically clear-cut (for Portuguese Merino sheep!), or that New England's inland population has only recently equalled what it was in 1840. All those towering oaks are relatively new. (He might also, for example, have added, as was reported on WXCI recently, that the grand total of white-tailed deer in Connecticut in 1896 was twelve.) The writer imparts this and similar fascinating information with great deft.Great gift book for an exurbanite or any lover of nature.

The gentlest peace always falls over me as I read one of the Mitford Years novels. The humor, the sense of community and family reaches beyond the pages. I want to be friends with all the characters, I have no problem identifying with each person's dialog.It had been years since I last read book seven. I jumped into 'Shepards Abiding' and instantly was home again. What more can you want from a series? Nothing.

I reread my favorites of Jan Karon's books each year and try timing this one to be read during the Christmas week because it always warms me up to the joys of the season - especially for those of us who have prayed the prayer surrendering our life to the Most High! All the delights of small town friendships, long term loving relationships, the beauties of advent church events and Christmas giving! That is quite a bit for a book, but it is so...both for my sad Christmases when I have felt lonely and for those when I am feeling blessed. A marvelous Christmas addition to the Mitford cannon!

There is not a one of the Mitford/Father Tim books that I've not read more than three times--many far more than that. I don't know what more I can say that will express my delight in these books. I've noticed that I often pick them up when I'm feeling low or anxious. They're very restful.I like spending time with these folks, even the wicked Edith is eventually redeemed. All of them have their own very human flaws and their own blessings to share.

Again, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. There is a problem, though I didn't mark it down since it appears it's a publisher problem & not content for this book and the last one I read. In this book there are letters substituted for the letter it should be - always at the end of the word. For example, the word "so" would be spelled "sa." In the last book it would abruptly drop off at the middle of a sentence in the middle of a paragraph, and take up somewhere else. In a few paragraphs or a few pages, the part that dropped off would show up just as unexpectedly. I've called to complain, and the last book they swapped it out with a new/different copy, and it was fine. This one they haven't figured out yet, and here I've already finished reading it! Since this time it was only one letter, I could usually figure out the word but it was not fluid reading. Amazon said they've put a note to supplier that they'll not sell any more books until they hear back & it is resolved.

I love this series. It's a glimpse at the characters who live in a small town, and how they learn to grow together as a community in faithfulness and love. Maybe a cliche idea these days, but I like the simplicity of it. Yes, it can be a little schmaltzy, but we all need a little schmaltz sometimes. And the truth of love shines through. In a world where we tend to think cynicism is sophisticated and smart, a little old-fashioned sweetness can remind us that the light is no less real and true than the darkness.

As a self-admitted Christmas junkie, I'm always on the lookout for movies and books to make my own personal holiday experience a little richer. I found that in "Shepherds Abiding", even though at that point I had not read any of Karon's other Mitford novels. The story is fairly simple and uplifting, but something about it appealed to my soul so much that I now make it a point to reread the book every year when fall comes and I can feel the holidays beginning to stir (which happens early on with crafters--so much to do and so little time to do it!) I also have it unabridged on cd so that I can listen to it if my hands are otherwise occupied, and I don't have that many books on cd. I've given copies of this to almost all of my friends in case their spirits need a little renewing during this time of year. If you are looking for an easy, comfortable read, this is it and it stands alone quite well without having to read the entire series. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

On this first Sunday of Advent, 2011, I decided tolisten once again to SHEPHERDS ABIDING. Actually I have heard it every year during the Christmas season since its 2005 release. The publisher's blurb sets the scene: "Since he was a boy growing up in Mississippi, Father Tim has lived what he calls 'the life of the mind.' But then he finds a derelect nativity scence that has suffered the indignities of time and neglect. Can he give ths small assemly new life, restore the camel's ear, repaint every piece? Imagining the excitement in the eyes of his wife, Cynthia, he steps up to the plate, beginning a small journey of faith that reaches every one around him." The good people of Mitford help, of course, many in unexpected ways. When you listen, you will know what I mean. Dooley is put on camel detail, however, and he does not help as he should have. Out of character for him. Please do listen. One of Karon's favorite choirs sings. And, one of my favorite narrators, John McDonough, reads. If you have not read the MITFORD series, start at the beginning with: AT HOME IN MITFORD. Follow it with book two: A LIGHT IN THE WINDOW. Then move to book six: A COMMON LIFE: THE WEDDING STORY. It is the story of the wedding of Father Tim and his Cynthia. And SHEPHERDS ABIDING is the continuation of that story of love. There are nine books in the Mitford sereis. I hope there will be more. Karon has written two books in the Father Tim series as well. Other authors have been praised as another Jan Karon. Patrick Taylor and his country doctor series, for example, and Gail Fraser and her Lumby series. Do not be fooled. Simply enjoy Karon and hope she continues to write for us. thank you.

This third in the series. Enjoy the many characters an the way they live. Honest people who don't swear or have extra marital affairs! Lots of simple pleasures along with living this life for our Lord.

Good book. Made me finally write down my "behavioral" answers instead of winging it. Nailed my next 2 interviews.

I was seeking for a new job and went through a series of interviews. Although I was not a job hunting newbie, this book still helped me quickly mitigate some worries and imagine potential questions in my most recent job interviews for a software engineer. Especially, the questions are well organized into individual chapter topics, and the answer strategies provided by the author assisted me to create my own answers to interview questions. This book is by all means worth for job hunters. Whenever you want to have a job change, you certainly need to have a copy of this book in hand.

Rife with grammatical errors that really hurt the author's credibility and make the book difficult to read.Helpful list of questions to expect in interviews, and some basic strategy on what to think about in structuring your answer, but I don't find it too profound. There are plenty of better purchases out there.

Helped prepare me for my flight attendant face-to-face!

Good structure, clear info, great to challenge memory and find examples from your own professional experience. I highly recommend it.

Concise, clear presentation with straightforward answers. I've read few other interview preparation books but this one is simply my favorite because it not only asks all the questions I was asked in the past interviews but it gives clear examples of how to answer and how not to answer. I only wish i read it earlier.

I'm usually one who can't stand to read a book that hasn't been edited well, but I decided to push past the many strange idiomatic quirks (the author, I'm guessing, is not a native English speaker) because the content is so good. There's a very thoughtful theme to this book: analyze every question first to determine what the interviewer is seeking; then apply a story-telling strategy of scenario-attack-outcome. It's very simple and therefore very usable. I made myself a crib sheet with all the stories I plan to prepare before my next big interview, and I'm grateful for this book's wisdom.

My husband wanted a book about this highway (with pictures) for his birthday. It stays by his chair and he is always reading something to me. He loves it!

This is the road that made adventure by vehicle a reality in the U.S., whatever we may think of it now. Vehicle sales exploded when this bumpy, awkward, muddy road went coast to coast. There's a nice documentary film on this road also.

Very well detailed history lesson. The Lincoln highway is coast to coast, San Francisco to New York and I am planning on taking this route and route 66 to and from Sacramento on one round trip. The author obviously spent a great deal of time on the details and made the trip himself. It was published in 1988 and all photo's are in black and white some dating back to 1915.The only issue I had, was I bought it used through an Amazon third party and I feel my book was maybe mis classified as far as condition by the bookseller. It had a page or two ripped out and was a library book. Bookseller had very good ratings so possibly this just slipped by. Since I am just using it for my own research I will keep it. You get what you pay for, usually and in this case I did. If it was a gift for someone I would have bought new.

I'm a history junkie and I admit it. And this book feeds my habit superbly. Drake Hokanson has done an excellent job of documenting the birth of the concept of a national road across the United States. It was the dawn of the motor age and the car makers realized that the future of their business depended on more than just regional travel. The visionaries of the Lincoln Highway saw their concept as unifying the continent, much as the transcontinental railroad had done 50 years before. The job of selling an idea, the politics of route locations, the romanticism and danger involved in striking out across no man's land to "see the country" and the techniques of keeping people motivated are all part of a well-woven story. His narrative mastery in describing what it felt like when he camped out where others had camped in the past had me feeling like I was right there with him. I love it when writing pulls me into the flow. In addition, Hokanson includes some beautiful archival photos from the University of Michigan as well as some he himself shot during research trips for the book. I wound up a little sad when I got to the last chapter because it was soon to be over. I think that's the mark of a good writer.

It wasn't as thorough as expected and the photographs were minimal.

It's fine, but I wish it had more on the highway going through Echo Canyon Utah.

The book arrived in good condition, however it appears to be a book from a public library. I wonder if I have the right to own the book.

My 9 year old daughter loved this book. It was definitely below her reading grade level but it was fun to see a new spin on an old story. It represents the black experience as a whole so I had to explain different religions that were represented in the book. She looked forward to seeing everyone character and called out with excitement "I can't wait to see what the mad hatter looks like and the......". She's a reader so she curled up with the book, went on her adventure then shared with her friends and family than her school. There was a voodoo part that could have been left out in my opinion. We used it as a teachable moment. There's a glossary in the back of who the people are in the pictures

Love this book! It's so rare to find children's books that represent a diverse audience and this one definitely does a great job of that. Plus it's such a creative take on the Alice in Wonderland story—I especially loved the twist on the traditional characters like Tweedledee & Tweedledum, which modernizes the adventure and makes it more relatable for kids today. It's such an engaging approach to re-telling this classic that also incorporates many important figures in African American history, adding that educational element. I bought it to give to my 9-year old nephew and my niece's baby, who are all of mixed African American heritage, and everyone (including the adults) enjoyed it. The illustrations are really cool too and as a creative professional I also appreciated the book's visual design and dynamic layout. The art itself is just beautiful. I highly recommend it and it definitely makes a great addition to anyone's children's book collection / library!

This book is fantastic! This is an amazing remix of a classic American story. The artwork Is simply outstanding and the cultural references teach African American history and offer opportunities to educate throughout the book. I got the book for my nieces who are stuck at the hip (4 and 5) years old and this is the only book they want to read now! I cannot wait for more books from this amazing company. This book is well worth the purchase, it’s educational, and I just love to see my nieces smile and garner a true love for reading.

There are about 4 typos in this book. I spent 20 dollars for this book as a gift and when I went to read it with my sister I sounded like a first grader, trying to figure out what the book meant. What a disappointment. I was so excited to support this book and author but the typos were just sloppy. I was so embarrassed reading this. I spent so much money on books and this was the most expensive and only one that was entirely messed up.

This book is absolutely beautiful and amazing. I am so VERY VERY impressed. The Glossary is everything. Educational, entertaining, abd a fun spin on a classic.

As a parent who reads a plethora of books to our children, I must tell you that this is a must-have book for your collection. It’s entertaining, sweet and educational. I like how this book appeals to children of every ethnic background whether you are white or Hispanic or African American or mixed race. Love it and can’t wait for more from the author!

I really love this book and so does my daughter. Buy it if you are AFAM for your family... Really like it.

just picked up a copy of this book at local used bookstore. bought without really looking at it because I own a pizzeria and whenever I'm in berkeley I go to the cheese board and am always in awe of the 40 minute line they have all night every night for two choices of take home pizza. i figured it would have something interesting to make it worth buying. thumbing through it today, it's a much more interesting find than I expected. there is an in depth sourdough and yeasted bread section but also all sorts of stories and insights into the behind the scenes stuff of a bakery and their business practices that I find particularly interesting. this book is definitely worth checking out from the library or picking up a used copy. several used copies on amazon for less than $5.

This is one of the best cookbooks that I own. The bakery from where these recipes come from is in my neighborhood and after eating many of the items whose recipes are in the book I was delighted to find that I could purchase the book. I have had a weakness for their Cherry Corn Scones and when I tried the recipe I was delighted that they turned out so well. The directions are excellent especially for making the yeast breads. If you love baking a variety of pastries, cookies and breads with easy, helpful directions then this is a great book to own.

While I was lucky enough to live in Berkeley, the Cheeseboard was a legend in every sense of the word. The Cheeseboard is THE place by which I judge all other breads and baked goods. I made the scones and they were declared "f@%*ing amazing" by people who normally eschew "dry, brittle" scones. Next, I made my own sourdough starter and it's awesome. Afraid I'd screw it up, I emailed the coop to see if I could buy some of the Cheeseboard starter the next time I was in town. Their reply: "We offer starter as a neighbor would offer a cup of sugar." This is more than a business, it's a community project. These people are Berkeley at it's best. I never made it back to the Bay Area, but I did start my own as per their directions and it's really, really, really good. This book is awesome and everything I've made (scones, sourdough, focaccia) has exceeded expectations. It's well-written and contains excellent instructions for fool-proof bread. The only time my bread failed is when I struck out on my own. I make the City Bread on weekends and enjoy a slice every morning with some butter and jam. It is moist and lasts about 5 days without losing too much texture. The older it gets, the longer I toast it. I actually get cranky when I miss out on it. My thanks to Cheeseboard for writing this great book for those of us who are no longer able to walk to the "Gourmet Ghetto" but keep a place for it in our hearts.. and stomachs!

The first is generosity of table where what is put before you food wise reflects time, effort, attention and care. Memorable meals, hosts and foods all show a generosity of the table.What is harder to find is generosity of knowledge where a cook will give you their prize techniques, recipes and knowledge for no other reason then to spread knowledge and pleasure though it might dilute their "brand" or mystique. You know people who never let go of a prize recipe because it is too valuable, too precious; something to be passed on to generations.I am happy to say that this cookbook reflects both kinds of generosity. The Collective really tries to convey the table type of generosity by providing a lot of blurbs from members and clients. Trying to give the atmosphere of a cheese shop where you and the seller spend time establishing trust and tasting models one thin cheese slice at a time.This book displays the generosity of knowledge by providing ALL the recipes loved by customers of the Cheeseboard. I spent a fortune buying the Olive Provolone bread, zampanos and other heady bread goodness that could be bought every time I left home and returned. When I left Berkeley sometimes I would think back longingly to bread from the cheeseboard during my travels.Now to the technical aspects. The book is definitely designed for people who have had previous experience with baking though they do show some rudimentary things like the window pane for gluten development. Still I would say that this book is not for the beginner but someone already comfortable with the bread making process.It is not as technically exhaustive as Silverton's _Breads of La Brea Bakery_ or Rheinhart's _Baker's Apprentice_but it does provide basic ideas and recipes that are used.Layout --The layout is not as user friendly as I would like with clear break-out steps so it is highly recommended that you read the recipe before using because the movement of the eye is not broken with subheaders and lines.The color of the paper is cream with use of black and red typography. It is done as a paperback that with use will become the scratch and sniff type of cookbook easily. If you bake and collect consider getting two copies because one will get quite a beating.Recipes -Solid gold for those who know how to bake and have the necessary equipment, like a baking stone. For those who have no patience to spend DAYS doing a sourdough starter this is not the book for you. Also, if you are a newbie to baking bread use Reinhardt's _Baker's Apprentice_ as a way better introduction since this book assumes you know what tacky and elastic dough refers to.I recommend this book highly with its anecdotal style, generosity of knowledge for any baking collection especially, a collection specializing in the northern California food revolution. However, for those just starting the adventure of baking there are way better teaching books.

If you have ever lived in (or even just dreamed of visiting) Berkeley, California, you are familiar with The Cheese Board's delicious breads and know why this is an absolute must for any baker's kitchen. I have had a lot of success with this book, and I am definitely just a casual baker.

However their responses are fairly uniform across the board.Yes, there might be a problem and we are doing very little to prepare.The book is short, I read it on a Sunday afternoon. It seems to have a good list of references but there are not a lot of details in the recommendations. Three chapters and about 27 pages are used to discuss the Mormons, which can be summed up as they are prepared.Based on a TV interview I expected more details, Such as a ranking of which geographic areas are most in danger. Are here areas of much older facilities likely to be difficult to repair? Actions to take if a problem occurs, rather than just "have a plan". Hard examples of major recent power outages and time it took to recover, instead of just a few examples.For instance if 1 major transformer is lost do we stay or do we go?If you know nothing about the grid and the potential for it failing, nothing about cyberwarfare and the possibilities, this might be a good introduction.It's a very easy read without a ton of details. And it shows what the government is not doing. If you remember the Northeast blackout of 2003 in which a software bug plunged 55 million in to the dark then you know the possibility of computer failure taking down the grid.

I bought this book on my phone. I have read it probably 3 times now. I usually read it when I am waiting for something--> you know the car repair, oil change, doctor's appt, airport, picking people up or for a meeting to start... I saw one negative review that there is no new information... and maybe that is right... but, the information is good. What we do with the 'awful truth' is the difficult part in the book. What do we do with the very real likelihood of something very terrible happening?A good friend is responsible for planning for a county in the event of a catastrophe. He told me of the dire realities after even a few days. I have read accounts of the things that transpired after Katrina. I have no real way to explain away what is likely, so, now it is to try and figure out how a small family makes it through and to seriously consider if it is even something that we should desire.This is a book worth reading and acting upon. If you cannot grasp that... the book will only puzzle you.
