My family is learning the history of the Aztecs. The book had nice, vibrant pictures and decent history up until the Spanish arrived. The book mentioned they sacrificed to their gods, but nothing about the tremendous amount of human sacrifice that went on in the culture. It portrayed the Spanish as essentially strolling in on a peaceful people and murdering them. I understand this is a children's book but no mention at all? This is whitewashed. It only portrayed the Spanish in a negative light and only portrayed the Aztecs--an extremely violent culture--in a positive light. Skip it.

Fantastic pictures and fascinating information about the Aztecs. My daughter enjoys the pictures (she's 4) and I was immediately engrossed in the reading. Very informative and well laid-out. Recommended!

Very good short historical work on the Aztecs. I'm glad I got it.

Simple and easy to read

Great resource for building background knowledge.

Great literature

Perfect! Written well for elementary grades. Great pictures.

#13,385 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I'm a great fan of John Lanchester's nonfiction (especially his essays in The New Yorker and the LRB). He's a master stylist with a gift for explaining seemingly dull or abstruse subjects in lively prose. Until now I've been less impressed by Lanchester's fiction, but The Wall is a sturdy and disquieting dystopian novel that deserves a wide readership. It's an unpreachy parable and a post-apocalyptic coming-of-age story that gradually picks up speed and significance as it moves away from the wall.

Read this in one 24-hour period, despite lukewarm reviews here. Interesting how many readers responded to this book so negatively...! It’s also interesting to me that climate change is somehow characterized as a political (liberal) position by many in our society. There are no political ideas espoused in this book. It’s posited on the idea that a cataclysm of some kind caused sea levels to rise, not by a few inches, but by many feet. I’m willing to accept this as a premise, not least because I also happened to be reading The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells, so I was in a climate change kind of mindset. I don’t really need an explanation of how the cataclysm happened, and the “why” is pretty apparent. And that’s a different book—-there are loads of books explaining the why of climate change, if you can take absorbing incredibly terrifying ideas. This book starts with a set of premises that the reader is asked to accept, kind of like Handmaid’s Tale, 1984, and many other speculative fiction books. The story is told without undue extra information, focuses on one person’s story. The narrative highlights the emotions of despair and loss, focusing on the extreme conditions—-life without fire, exposed to the elements, and with food and water a constant concern could be MUCH more uncomfortable than most of uS, reading in our comfortable heated living rooms with electric lights and leftovers in the refrigerator and no armed pirates trying to steal our food and water, want to acknowledge. The reality of climate change has always seemed too big to get my mind around, too hopeless for one person to be able even imagine how to respond. Recycling seems kind of pointless. But this dramatization of how we might end up helped me imagine one possible scenario, and not even a worst case scenario. In the worst case, life on earth is reduced by 90 some percent, as has occurred five times in the past. After reading these two books, one scientific nonfiction and this book, the story of one human being reduced to primitive circumstances and struggling to survive, I feel like it’s time to join whatever forces out there are fighting climate change. For that reason alone, I’m glad I read it. Docked one star because it ends too soon, and unsatisfactorily.

Overall too preachy-not well developed-poor ending.

What makes this story so disturbing isn’t just the world the author created, but even more so, the emotions of the main characters. They are mostly helpless pawns navigating a world that their parents’ generation created and controlled. But when you want to vilify them, you realize it’s yourself.

Surrounding the island of Great Britain, The Wall was constructed after The Change, the oceans rose and the earth was unable to continue to sustain the global population. The Others can attack at any moment; their desire to enter the a semi-working civilization of Britain stokes relentless courage. But the Defenders are there to man the wall in 12-hour shifts. Newly conscripted into his 2-year appointment, Kavanagh must learn the routine quickly. There is talk all over the news about walls, both literal and figurative. Treaties and alliances formed and broken. Strong-willed politicians who drum up support based on fear of the others. And individuals who are sent into the fray in the midst of their debating conscious. Lanchester pushes the debates forward, but in a subtle way. He focuses on that soldier, that individual, who is in turns apathetic, angry, and contemplative.I don't want to give away too much of the plot because it is such a short book. But you can expect the training of the Defenders, which serves as an introduction to the Wall and its history and politics. And yes, you can expect an attack. Now is the time to mention a key rule in the defense of the country: if an attack occurs and the Others are successful in entering the country, those Defenders who are responsible will be pushed out to sea...Lanchester's story is weighing on me hours after finishing. Ultimately, I think this will be a polarizing read. There are many things I liked about it. The premise, the ending, several of the characters. But I wanted a little more out of the main character. I wanted him to have some sort of passion, either for or against the Wall. He more connected with his mates, and was focused on finishing his tenure of service than with anything bigger than himself for most of the book, but there is a change, a realization of sorts. There are some excellent twists and an ending that was something I didn't expect, but loved.

The Wall. The huge structure of stone, ice, and magic on the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms. Jon Snow's wall at Winterfell that keeps back the Wildlings and White Walkers. Oh that's a different wall.Patrolling 'The Wall' is repetitive, monotonous, tedious, boring, uninteresting, humdrum, mundane, tiresome, wearisome, dreary, soul-destroying, mind-numbing.I get it.Dragons? This book was difficult to review. An interesting premise that just didn't come together. Good writing and well paced but not much happened. I guess that was the idea to show the monotony of patrolling the wall. When will the Dragons show up? Once the 'Others' get over the wall where do the go?Is there an underground railroad that hides them?Where are the drones? Why don't the defenders have night vision infra red goggles? Why don't they have giant spotlights on top of the wall? Submarines patrolling the waters near the wall? No?What does climate change have to do with technology?Just should have been better. What's that on the horizon? Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion?!

Great memory tool. Will take time to learn thoroughly, but we will keep at it. I love this kind of thing. Mneumonics with pictures. It doesn't get better. My kids and I agree...we would take the free Cauliflower with a Sack of Mementos purchase. (Sacramento, California)

We loved The Little Man In the Map so much we were really looking forward to this one. We were a little disappointed, it lacks the same illustration and vibrancy that we loved in the original. It still has clever ways of trying to memorize, just not as riveting and endearing as the States one.

Loved how the author rhymed and described the states. We home school and do Classical Conversations, its a great companion to Cycle 3.

Wonderful teaching tool! My teacher friend's 5th grade boys loved it so much, they were inspired to have competitions to see who could learn the states in record time. Best of all, they were able to retain what they learned.. .

This book is good, not as good as "Yo, Sacramento!" But we can't figure out for the life of us why it is called the Little Man in the Map? He makes absolutely no appearance in the whole book except on the cover. So don't think this is a companion to "The Little Man in the Map" book about where the states are located.

Good book but not nearly as memorable as the MIM states book.

My high school ESL students enjoyed the strategies in this book, and some found success for the first time in memorizing important information in English.

Awesome supplement to the Man in the Map state book i use them to teach states and capitals in my 5th grade classroom.

The cards themselves are good quality. There are 2 sets of 26 different alphabet sounds, one displaying lower case and one displaying upper case so that’s nice to have 2 different words that demo the sound for each letter. BUT, I AM SO FRUSTRATED that the manufacturers of alphabet cards seem to have never had the experience of teaching a child to read. The purpose of the cards is to introduce the concept of letters and to teach their basic sounds to brand new learners. They generally have no prior understanding of letter sounds. We are starting from as basic as you can get. With the vowels, the first sound you teach is their short vowel sound. They SHOULD be teaching the basic short vowel sounds (“a” as in cat, “e” as in envelope, “i” as in igloo, “o” as in octopus, “u” as in umbrella) as this is the place that they’re learning those sounds for the first time. I cannot understand why ABC flash cards in general do not understand this!? Instead of teaching the basics, they will throw other vowel sounds in there. How am I supposed to teach my three year old that “o” says awwwww, when I’m given cards with an orange and even worse an owl. The “ow” vowel combo is taught wayyyy later, after silent E and long vowel sounds. I literally am going to have to craft an O card with an octopus or something to add in to the cards if I want to teach him that BASIC sound. You know, o as in box, doll, pot, mom, dog, fox, hop, frog, BASIC! Why are we tryna teach them ow or Ō? They did better with the “i” sounds, and had a short i and a long i with Iguana and Ice. “U” have umbrella and ukulele, so one short and one long as well. That’s ok, fine, but. There’s only short “a” cards, and only short “e” cards. There’s no consistency, and truly, you’re gonna confuse the kid rather than teaching him. Makes no sense. I suggest either making all the vowel sound cards short sounds, or having a short set and a long set, but they need to have some kinda plan.

Perfect. I love that the uppercase and lower case letters are on 2 different cards to make actually "flashing" the flash card and repetition more effective.

Great cards good quality!

Does the trick!!! Great choice to help toddler learn!

Love it

BUY THIS...I bought two! Great idea, little zones, close up big letter (you can actually read) maps not all confused with teensy print stuff. Ideally, they would make one of these fold out things with bus numbers, but you can look those up. It's small, bigger than pocket but not much, has maybe 8 zones, each with a readable map (I am 66 as of today and I can see the print). Tube map in the back, major cites are drawn in so you see where they are. If you are lost or wandering or wanting to verify grab this baby out of the backpack and voila- clarification. My bro is going to London and needs a 3 day lead and a map to find the bathroom in our house, so this is essential, and I can release him on London with this and a compass and a cell phone and only pace HALF the night...ha ha ha...really, he is HOPELESS. But, then they called my mom "wrong way" all her life so the apple and the tree...

Ok, I love maps. I don't always trust the cell phone service when I am travelling and I love to have back up. I placed this in my purse and used it for my trip to London. Loved it!! It is compact, easy to read and helps keep you organized as you travel via bus or tube. It is my favorite type of map organization and I am hoping to find more cities from this company and use them over and over. I don't comment on many of my orders, but I felt this one deserved a shout out!!

This little book is a nice combination of guide and map. I'm somewhat obsessed with finding the perfect guidebook every time I take a trip ... I often buy more than one just to be sure I don't miss anything. While it's great to have that kind of information on hand, it's best to have on hand back at the hotel in my suitcase rather than weighing down my purse while I'm out sightseeing. I read through my big guidebooks, then made a few sticky notes with a few things I wanted to remember and stuck them on the relevant pages of this one to take with me. After all, who needs to lug a guidebook containing things like hotel information around all day? This is a great size for carrying in a purse. It's also small enough that my husband can be persuaded to stow it in his jacket. Even better! The book starts out with a double-page horizontal fold-out showing a map of the entire city divided into 10 sections. It gives some very basic information on the city, getting around, etc. Each section then gets its own two-page vertical fold-out, including a larger map. Points of interest are reviewed, including a number of restaurants, bars, shopping, and things to see. There are lots of color pictures on every page. The maps include Underground stations and there's also an Underground map in the back. The section maps are MUCH easier to read than the little maps you can get from the hotels or at the Metro stations. Not only is the print bigger, but the maps themselves are not as unwieldy as a regular map. I felt just a little less touristy reading them. While I wouldn't recommend this as your ONLY guide to London, overall I think they did a good job of balancing the need for information with a manageable size.

I buy this guide for any city I visit and for which a guide exists. Yes, you should do other research, but while you're walking around and maybe the phone is dead or no Wi-Fi or whatever and your plans change, this little guide comes through - with maps, restaurants, and the best places to visit.I bought a new one as a gift and a used one for myself.l for a city I regularly visit. The used one was 10 years old; better to buy the new one for a few bucks more.

This is my sixth city Knopf mapguide purchase and I can't rave enough about them. I started with the Rome guide and was the envy of my travel buddies (all 25 of them) the entire trip. These guides provide the best street detail of any map guide I have ever used. They are small and compact and are really easy to pack in a daypack or medium size purse. The paper is of good quality, sturdy and has held up over multiple used. The small fold out individual maps make your "where am I" a bit more discreet. Also, the fold-out maps make it easy to put back together and store. I have loaned my guidebooks many of my friends and recommend them as a "must have" when they travel.

TERRIFIC. The formatting is brilliant!! Of the suggestions I checked out for restaurants, cafes, shopping, etc. given for each section, every one was worthwhile. Even my friend who has lived in London most of his life was impressed and enjoyed using it with me.

I never got lost in London using this guide. It’s clear, well thought out and the sections are accurate. It’s easy to read and follow and gives nice suggestions. I’m using it again this year when I return to London. It’s actually packed, first thing I did!

I studied this map two months before I went to London for the first time. This map made me think it's a cozy, easy-strolling, pretty, understandable, doable city.Once I was there, when I started trying to navigate using this map, I learned that it had created an illusion of simplicity. It was actually quite useless, as it gives the names of the bigger streets, and omits the tiny myriad side streets. The Tube map should have been integrated into the map, but while the map shows the stations, you don't get the sense of which stations connect. You need to have a Tube map to do a side by side comparison, constantly.I wound up buying a London A-Z map which gives every tiny alley, notes every dead end. The A-Z is "too much information," but it does not attempt to sugarcoat and obfuscate. My recommendation, based on experience: buy the London A-Z and a compass, as there are few North-South streets.

This is a good one. It successfully goes from basic beginner to more advanced concepts.Let me compare it to some other Scratch books:DK Workbooks: Coding with Scratch Workbook --- this is a short book with only an introduction and the most basic projects. It would be ideal for younger children (6 or 7) or as a self-learning introduction to Scratch for kids (9-10). It should be followed up with another book.Coding in Scratch Games Workbook; DK --- this is another good one to introduce Scratch and create some fun games that build skills. Compared to Code Your Own Games, the DK book starts just as easily, but has more beginner and easy games and doesn't progress as far or as quickly.Coding Games in Scratch; DK --- this is a bigger book and progresses to more sophisticated games by comparison. Although it includes more, it also costs more.My kids are learning through a combination of teaching themselves through the book, experimenting with their own ideas, and some coaching from me. One of the problems that came up because of Coding Games in Scratch (DK) and could have come up with this book, happened when my son was attracted to a more advanced game and built it by just copying the code out of the book. Because he didn't fully understand it, he ran into a lot of difficulty and frustration troubleshooting it. I helped him with that, and then directed him back to some projects that build the basics. If you're not supervising their learning, you might choose a short book that teaches only the basics and then follow up with a book that goes farther, after they've spent about four to ten hours coding, which might be in a day or after a few weeks. This book (Code Your Own Games) or Coding Games in Scratch (DK) are both good to introduce Scratch or to follow up after an introduction. After either of these and about 40 to 80 hours coding, they could move on to "Advanced" Scratch books or other languages. If you're supervising their learning or doing classroom-style work, consider "Learn to Program with Scratch: A Visual Introduction to Programming with Games, Art, Science, and Math"

Bowen's been playing a number of computer games during the summer, and would frequently ask questions like: "How come this boss monster could change his shape?" That sort of thinking led me to believe that he was ready for the next step: learning to program a computer so he could make his own games.I had originally thought of building a "game construction kit" out of something like Unity, but a few attempts at the tutorial made me realize that this was way too complex. I'd heard about Scratch before, but the online tutorials left me cold. It wasn't that I couldn't figure out the programming language, it was that I was bereft of ideas as to what to do with it that would make interesting projects for Bowen that wouldn't bore him to death. (For whatever reason, it takes a heck of a lot more than "Hello World" to interest a kid used to modern computer graphics!)I bought Code Your Own Games! with relatively little expectation that it would actually be good. It's relatively cheap, and was spiral bound so it would lay flat, and with Amazon purchases I figured returns are easy if it's a piece of junk. When the book arrived, Bowen picked it up, and with the alacrity of a child flipped past the "introduction to scratch" page and jumped straight to the first project. My heart sank when I saw that the book was simply of the format: "Step 1: draw this sprite. Step 2: drag this code to the script tab". Then I noticed that each piece of code was explained with text (not that Bowen would bother reading those!). The projects immediately always did something fun, and half of the project would involve drawing rather than coding (which is about right when it comes to modern game implementation). What was interesting to me was that Bowen didn't learn so much from the book's coding, but from finding "bugs" in the resultant game behavior and modifying the project so the game behaved the way he wanted it to!For instance, in project 8 (Catch the Donut), he noticed that even when the game was over, you could keep clicking on the donut and score points. So this became an opportunity for him to learn how to implement boolean flags in a language that didn't have them, and how to use those flags. In project 4 (Drive me Crazy), he didn't like that the car would move when the throttle wasn't pressed down, so he fixed the code so that the throttle would have to be down for the sprite to keep moving. The language is never formally taught. It's used and the child's expected to pick it up (which is great, that's how programming languages should be taught). Scratch is an object-oriented language with event-driven features, and the unstructured nature of the "drag and drop" code tab gets kids used to the idea that multiple things could be happening at the same time for a sprite. The environment is kind of crude, with copy/paste, etc not really implemented well, but it works. Everything happens online, but you have to manually do your own saves and backups, and more than once Bowen lost some work because he forgot to manually save.Overall, for a 5 year old, this is not a book you can just give to him and expect him to solve major problems. You'll have to help and coach him (including teaching him to make backups), and lead him through some of the problems. But for $7.12, this is a great introduction to programming, doesn't require a powerful computer, and has shown Bowen that the only thing more addictive than a video game is writing one. Highly recommended.

At first I was a skeptic and thought the book would never be able to teach a child anything; there were too many graphics, visuals, colors, etc. that would distract from coding. However, when I actually went through the first 10 game exercises, I was amazed at the approach. The book takes you on very simple 2-3 page game coding exercises, with each being a full game, and from game 1 to 20, there is a natural progression (you build upon previous code/games). In two pages, a child learns to "code" (if you can call visual programming coding), and a full game is created; this gives the child a tremendous sense of confidence. Of course, I've had over 15 years of professional software engineering experience, and that may have contributed to my initial skepticism and eventual affinity (I had to ask myself, how would I teach a child through a book, and could not really come up with something competitive and found it near impossible!). It may be that teaching a child to program requires a reference point like this book and a patient, experienced adult to step through; I am not quite confident of how much the progress was due to me and/or the book; nevertheless, the book gave me confidence in teaching and guiding a child. Overall, well done to Mr. Wainewright, it was well worth the investment. There are two things I did not like about the book: the spiral binding and the difficulty in standing the book up (at an angle) to look at and use it while teaching/learning. I do wish in the future, books like these that focus on children learning to code are more ergonomic in their packaging/binding.

Hidden gem! Awesome second book about coding games in Scratch, if you already have one like Woodcock's one. Lots of ideas even for experienced games-coder :)
