This is the size of a children's book, so beware of the size dimensions before purchasing. I was hoping for a comprehensive picture book of the most well know jewels (diamonds specifically) with close up detail. What I got was a poorly written description of a handful of diadem's with some of the photos poorly placed over two pages or cut off entirely. Waste of money.
A great little book to add to your library if you don't want to buy the Queen's Diamonds book by Hugh Roberts. It will also work as a companion if you already have the big book (as I do). The book is perfect in information, photos, price and size so it is a pleasure to read or to give (X-mas is coming). Enjoy!
The jewels are beautiful. The settings are fabulous. I have always appreciated the jewels worn by Her Majesty the Queen and how they can be put together in many different combinations. Stones may be removed fron one piece and easily replaced with other gems. Tiaras become necklaces or headbands, etc. I love their versatility. The photographs are marvelous and the detail shown is amazing. I have one little quibble: a photograph is attibuted to Antony Armstrong Jones, b. 1893. He was born in 1930. I also wish there had been descriptions of the emeralds and rubies, etc. shown in the detailed enlargements. Only the diamonds were described. All in all, a very beautiful book and well worth the price.
I realize this book is pricey, but well worth it. Filled with portraits and royal history as well as fantastic photos of the items. I am an antique jewelry appraiser and gemologist. So, I admit to having a special interest in adding this book to my shelf of reference books.
Very nice book, focuses mostly on the tiaras rather than the smaller jewels.
My wife read it from cover to cover.
Absolutely gorgeous pictures and stories about the jewelry.

I bought this book assuming I'd read it to be an encouragement to the author - but I also found it an incredibly encouraging and edifying read. I know it sounds like a niche topic - but I found the writing to be clear, engaging, and relevant to all Christians. Eric does a great job weaving in Puritan history and also applying it to the struggles every Christian has faced, i.e. how do I know God has accepted me and loves me, even when I screw up? If you've not wrestled with this, you will, and it's encouraging to know that smart and godly people 400+ years ago (i.e. William Gouge) wrestled with this as well. He quotes extensively from Gouge, which was helpful, especially since Gouge seems much more of a pastor's writer than an academic. A quick survey of the titles of his works shows he was focused on equipping his church members in their Christian walk.

It also helped pioneered use of the Internet for community and Silicon Alley in NYC. And, believe it or not, but for a little irrational exuberance it might have been a viable community.Stephen Paternot and Todd Krizelman started theglobe.com while they were students at Cornell. A Very Public Offering is Paternot’s account. It was originally published in 2001. This new edition includes a new intro and afterword (it probably isn’t worth the purchase price if you already own the original version). Paternot landed on his feet: he got into film producing and founded a film finance startup.The prose and the narrative are a little rough, but it is too good a story for that to slow it down. It was a heady time. theglobe.com IPO was priced at $8 but its share hit $97 on the first day. The even crazier part is that sixteen million shares traded hands the day of a three-million-share deal. The initial run up gave Paternot, who owned a million shares, a net worth of $97 million . . . on paper. Fourteen months later the stock price was down to $7. Paternot and Krizelman stepped down as co-CEOs when the stock dipped all the way to $2. (Most of Paternot’s shares were locked in, but Paternot did manage to sell enough shares to not lose everything.)theglobe.com comes off as a little snake bit. Its pre-IPO road show came right as the NASDAQ dropped bigtime. It never got the truly crazy valuations of some other dot coms and didn’t raise as much money as later companies. It turns out that their investment bankers Bear Stearns screwed them. A secondary offering closed days after Alan Greenspan issued his famous warning about “irrational exuberance†and raised rates. Despite having at one point 30,000 paying subscribers and later a user base sufficient to bring in real advertising revenue. Maybe snake bit isn’t the right term. On one hand, theglobe.com had more actual revenue than a lot of Internet companies with far higher valuations. Does it make any sense for a company twenty times bigger than at its IPO date to be worth one-hundredth as much? On the other hand, it still wasn’t undervalued.It was a fascinating time. But maybe it wasn’t all that different. Paternot complains (maybe a little too much) about how unfair the press was to him (but, then again, you shouldn’t be hitting the clubs every night when you’re CEO of a public company, and you should never be wearing plastic pants). Coming from the middle of the Silicon Valley, and being part of the "boom" made this a must read 20 years ago. I was fascinated then, however, I just finished listening to the audible version and found it's message more relevant than ever. But even more, Stephan Paternot's personal performance was captivating. You could hear the passion in his voice underscore the roller coaster of a journey he took. I felt it, I related to it. It was like sitting in a coctail bar and sitting accross from him as he told the story. The lessons are especially important to newbie entrepreneurs! Be wary of Investment bankers who's job it is to exploit someone else's success; don't give away your control to investors only interested in short term profit; recognize that insecurity isolates you from your people and never wear plastic pants out in public. Don't miss the epilogue! It brings it all full circle and seems to find closure for the 24 year old CEO who found his way back, stronger and now well armed to win in his new journey.
This story is an amazing look at an incredible time in the history of “new media.†These guys were blazing a trail towards the many things, especially social media, that we take for granted today. But it’s really a story about what I believe makes America great. It almost sounds cliche, as it seems to happen over and over: A couple of guys meet in an Ivy League dorm room and the world is forever changed. But what is often missed is the journey upon which they embark. All the hits, misses, joys, tragedies, and moments of doubt on the road to success - however that might be measured. Stephan’s story captures the journey and it’s so exciting to be along for the ride. Oh, and by the way, I was along for the ride! A must read for any entrepreneur. And a blast of a story for anyone else drunk with the American dream.

This is the second book in the Mighty Jack series and was an absolutely amazing read! I am a huge Hatke fan and really enjoy both the Zita the Spacegirl series and the Mighty Jack series. My 10 year old son also reads these graphic novels and they are his absolute favorite right now. This is a very fun and feel good story that’s an absolutely pleasure to read.In this book Jack and Lilly chase the ogre who kidnapped Maddy into another dimension; a sort of floating crossworlds between the worlds. It is incredibly creative and fun to read about with lots of adventure and action.I love Hatke’s illustration; the drawing lines are fairly simple but the color is spectacular and the creativity behind the illustration is amazing. The illustration really makes the whole amazing story come alive.I also like there are some interesting topics covered in here. Of course this storyline continues with the importance of supporting and protecting family. It also covers some about struggling with finances, not taking things at face value, friendship and responsibility.There is a nice big surprise at the end of the book too, which absolutely thrilled both me and my son.Overall this was an amazing read and I loved every moment of it. This is a fantasy graphic novel that is aimed at middle grade readers but is great for readers of all ages. Everything about this graphic novel is perfect from the story to the illustration. Highly recommended.
For those who love a fairy tale inspired fantasy Mighty Jack and the Goblin King - the sequel to the must-read Mighty Jack is perfect. So, if you haven’t read that one yet - first of all - get on that. And second of all, I’m about to reveal a spoiler for the first book so…. you know, you might want to skip ahead a few seconds if that would bother you. Okay - Mighty Jack and the Goblin King begins with Jack and his friend Lilly in pursuit of the ogre that abducted Jack’s sister, Maddy, and carried her up the beanstalk into another realm. Now, I’ve read Jack and the Beanstalk so I thought I knew what they would discover in this other world. But, no…. completely and wonderfully different than what I was expecting! Here are three things to love about Mighty Jack and the Goblin King.1. Lilly’s story with the goblins. At the very beginning, she and Jack get separated and she ends up rescued(?) by a clan of goblins and on the brink an arranged marriage with their king. And the goblins are this weird mix of cute and gross and sweet and disconcerting.2. The magic eight ball and the old mustang that Lilly finds in the goblin’s junk heap. And how both of those objects come into play later on in the story.3. That surprise ending!! I finished this book in the waiting room of doctor’s office and I embarrassed myself by squeaking loudly when I got to that page.The Mighty Jack books have been a huge hit with my students and my kids. And I love them because they have depth paired with a lot of action and humor. So if you have kids who loved Amulet or Hilo - this would be a great series to introduce to them next.(Excerpt from the Books Between Podcast Episode #38)
My son is rather obsessed with Ben Hatke's books, it really started with Zita the Spacegirl, but all of his books have been favorites in our house, and we would highly recommend them. But after reading the first Mighty Jack book a few months ago, my eldest has been eagerly awaiting the next book. It came today, and he was itching to open it and read, but he waited until after dinner and we read it together.This book picks up immediately after the events if the previous Mighty Jack book, do it would be helpful to read that one first. We hadn't read it in a while, but my son's were right back into the middle of Jack and Lilly's search for Maddy.As always with Mr. Hatke's books, the art is gorgeous. The story is fun, the humour is nuanced, and the interpretation of the Jack story is fresh twist on the classic. And there are the inevitable cameos from his other works.We picked up three copies, so that we can donate them to our library and ensure they are in circulation, but I'm sure Mighty Jack will be coming home with us again.
B.Hatke has made a wonderful follow-up to “Mighty Jack†that has the action and suspense needed to really update the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale. Jack, Maddy and Lilly are back in action along with a wink-n-nod to “Nobody Likes a Goblin.†I especially like the ease of world-building in this story, and especially appreciate B.Hatke’s careful connections of plot to frames in this graphic novel - The flow is smooth. It was an interesting choice to create a small rift between Jack and Lilly, but it doesn’t seem to be hindering anything in the story. I also like the cliff-hanger in the epilogue when the cast from Zita the Space Girl come back to throw in a new twist. Apparently, there will be a third story, and I look forward to it.
My family and I have read and love most of Ben Hatke's books (The Might Jack series, Zita the Space Girl, Nobody Likes a Goblin, the the one about the home for homeless creatures) are all fantastic. This is a great second book in the a series with a nice twist ending only readers of Hatke's other books will get. The story is great thought there is one weird thing which my 5 year even pointed out: the girl character does everything in this book - and then towards the end Jack is told 'You did a great job saving everyone Jack!"
This is an absolutely marvelous book! I can't believe how wonderful it is, even though I had high expectations after loving book one. The art is gorgeous, the humor is brilliant. The characters are endearing and admirable, and they're believably mistaken sometimes as they try to do their best. Read it. It's a charming and imaginative adventure, and a must-read for kids or grown-ups like me. I recommend first reading Mighty Jack book one. There are plenty of nods to his other stories, so you'll be rewarded for reading the author's other comics and children's books, though it's not necessary in order to enjoy this book.

If you live in Louisiana and don't understand usufruct, read this book. It's an awesome tool for Louisiana residents in that usufruct has a huge advantage over a Qtip trust that estate planners in the other 49 states use.
