The second installment of the Circle Trilogy did not disappoint but managed to choke me even more than "Black" - the first book that everyone should read prior to experiencing "Red". It has been a long, long time since a book made me tear up and this roused up with emotions and abyssal feelings that only very skilled writers can exude from their reader. This is a fascinating installment that takes Thomas Hunter, the man who lives in our reality when awake and also in another world when he dreams at nigh, on the wildest ride of his life. This can only be described as a new form of allegory; characters who understand our world are reflected in the dream world which is engulfed in a battle of massive proportions, people are no longer standing for an idea, they are someone else in the other world and if they die then those consequences spill over and threaten everything that Thomas and his sister ever knew.America is in the hot seat with the release and spread of a deadly virus, and Thomas must use his dreams to find answers and ways to stop it before he is eradicated and he can dream no more. Those who oppose him want him dead and want his dreams to stop but others who love life have nothing left but the hope that he can save them - easier said than done, Ted Dekker likes to swing his heroes and foes as deep as his mind allows, and this is one hairy book, it takes a lot of sweat and guts to take this ride.In the dream world those who rejected Elyon's waters have turned to Desert Dwellers known as Scabs, dry and disease stricken nomads, their minds and eyes are ashen with sickness and visions of death and conquests, the worship Teeleh and the Shataiki and will stop at nothing until the remaining forests and their people are destroyed. In real life Thomas is on hot pursuit to find and rescue the one person who can stop the Raison Virus; the creator of the vaccine herself - Monique de Raison. Her role in the story is much deeper than the reader might think of and I actually guessed part of her secret, it felt amazing thought to live with the characters are see how they developed and how some changed for better and some for worse. Carlos and other mercenaries of death are on hot pursuit and the reader is in for a delicious treat of intrigue, some romance and countless twists and turns. In this book Ted Dekker writes an ultimate showdown between good and evil, and it's been done to the death in books and movies but this novel is simply astounding. I read it in two days and would have read it in one sitting if I wasn't sick with a bad cold, it was truly a book that I know will stay with me forever and I am simply dying to read the last installment "White". These books are so deep and moving they are impossible to describe in a review, instead they should be enjoyed like a fine meal, one that serves more than one purpose to feed, it enriches the user forever and I feel blessed to have taken this journey with Dekker and his friends and foes. So please enjoy and take away from the riches that make the heart beat faster and the head spin - these books read like nothing else and are extremely satisfying.- Kasia S.

I enjoyed the novel "Black" immensely. It was a fulfilling read. Then, as I was getting deeper into "Red," I could feel that it was even better than Black. It didn't make Black any less of a gem, but it was really good. I suppose the word to describe it's quality would be "substance." Ted Dekker's talent as an author really came through in Red. I have never gotten into war stories before, they just weren't my cup of tea. But this thing was very good because of the fantasy. Dekker makes impossible things believable to the imagination. The ending may not appeal to the tough guy, but I felt that it struck to the heart. It went to the core of emotions. I loved it.I don't like the graphic novel of Red that came with the book. If it didn't consist of so many pages I would rip them out of the back of the book. But, that's just me because I don't get into comic books.Yesterday I read a Ted Dekker interview where he stated more than once that his books are not "Christian Fiction." You can find the interview by searching his name on the internet.

This is the 2nd book in the Circle Series. It is a continuation of the journey of Thomas Hunter who lives in 2 realities. When reading the book you begin to see common elements that mirror each other in both realities. Thomas of Hunter dreams and wakes up in the alternate reality but both realities feel real. One character in a reality may mirror a different person in the other reality. You will begin to recognize parallels to the Bible. It is an amazing book. Now on to book 3 - White.

When it comes to "Christian Fiction," I have always hesitated (outside of Frank Peretti). This series came recommended by my Mom. So, trusting her, I picked it up and when I began nearly put it down in the first couple chapters. Something kept me going - and then I was had.Dekker writes a dual reality story and powerfully engages the heart in the story of love, sin, grace, betrayal, temptation, and hope. This story is wrapped in thriller format - and tells of the surrender and sacrifice of Christ. Dekker had me bitting my nales, shedding a tear, yelling at characters, and longing for more grace in my life.If you are longing for a tale of the power, the beauty, and the danger of life connected with the Divine - this is the series for you!1. Black2. Red3. WhiteBe sure to get them in that order! And look, they are only a couple bucks on Amazon - worth it!Go on the journey - get wrapped up in the thriller.

After reading Black, I was so glad that I got these books at the same time instead of having to wait months for the next book. Red picks up right where Black leaves off. Kind of. Thomas is now 15 years older after the colored forest has been destroyed. He is now a respected leader of the Forest Guard, but remembers a time when he had dreams of The Histories. He goes back to what he thought was his regular world a changed man. He has the knowledge that he hopes can help him win the battle against Svensson and Fortier. This series does everything that a good novel should do - I felt every range of emotion from laughter to tears, anger to compassion, but most of all, it made me think. The last few chapters of this book left me speechless. I still have no words to describe how those last few chapters made me feel - almost a week after finishing the book!! This is definitely a series you need to read in order and in it's entirety, but I don't think you'll have that problem once you start.

Decent read just not exactly what I like or was looking for. The predictable back and forth makes me forget the importance of events often.

My niece loaned me a copy of the first of this trilogy named Black. After reading it, I just had to purchase books 2 and 3. Great story. One of those that you hate to put down.

Most people don’t keep their New Year’s resolutions. According to a commonly cited statistic, 92 percent of resolution-makers become resolution-breakers. The odds may not be ever in your favor, it seems.Of course, most people don’t accomplish their goals, period. It doesn’t matter to your body whether you resolve to eat right and exercise on January 1 or July 17, for example. The only thing that matters is whether you eat right and exercise. You can start doing those things — or not doing them — any time of the year. The same goes with any other goal.So why do our resolutions fail? Why don’t we finish what we start? There may be any number of reasons, but Jon Acuff thinks that perfectionism is “the ultimate villain.”He writes:"The problem is that perfectionism magnifies your mistakes and minimizes your progress. It does not believe in incremental success. Perfectionism portrays your goal as a house of cards. If one thing doesn’t go perfectly, the whole thing falls apart. The smallest misstep means the entire goal is ruined."Perfectionism also messes us up by making us aim too high. There are perhaps a thousand reasons 92 percent of resolutions fail, but one of the greatest is also one of the most deceptive."When we create a goal, we aim for something better. We want to look better. We want to feel better. We want to be better. But then better turns into best. We don’t want small growth. We want massive, overnight success."The key to keeping your New Year’s resolutions and accomplishing your goals starts with kicking perfectionism to the curb. This is easier said than done, however, so Acuff recommends taking six action steps:1. Cut your goal in half.2. Choose what to bomb.3. Make it fun if you want it done.4. Leave your hiding places and ignore noble obstacles.5. Get rid of your secret rules.6. Use data to celebrate your imperfect progress.Again, this looks easy, but while Acuff keeps the tone of the book light — he’s a very witty author — there are sound motivational principles behind his advice. And he fleshes out how to take each action step with concrete examples, diagnostic questions and helpful suggestions.Reading a book isn’t a magic wand. Accomplishing your goals requires work, often hard work. But the work doesn’t have to be impossible or joyless. In fact, it should be doable and tap into your deepest hopes. As the New Year begins, don’t let the best get in the way of the better. Don’t let perfectionism hinder progress, however small. Be realistic, be patient…and get ’er done!

Finish acts as a no B.S. guide to getting things done as it helped me quickly identify the barriers, self-imposed and external, that stand in the way of completing what I’ve started. I highly recommend this book to professionals looking to be more effective when it comes to their productivity and better managing their ability to execute. Finish is particularly applicable to creative creators who are writing, podcasting, shooting video or developing any other format of content as there’s a lot of particular tips for helping simplify your goals to ensure you’re able to reach the finish line and get things published. Here are my three big takeaways from the book and why I recommend giving this a read:1) The pursuit of perfectionism keeps you from reaching your goals. Acuff suggests coming to the realization that your goals won’t be perfect and that you’ve got to develop a tolerance for imperfection. There will be failures along the way as you navigate your tasks, but that doesn’t mean you should stop because of a misstep or two or maybe even three.2) Reduce your goals to ensure you reach the finish line. He suggests cutting your initial goals in half to make them more attainable as we typically fall prey to planning fallacy, the tendency to make plans unrealistically close to best-case scenarios. A researcher at the University of Memphis studied the members enrolled in one of Acuff’s courses and found that “90 percent of the people that cut their goal in half said they had an increased desire to work on their goal; it encouraged them to keep going, and it motivated them to work harder because the goal seemed attainable.” He found that people were more eager to continue forward and finish their projects when their goals became manageable and the pace was adjusted accordingly.3) Identify the made-up rules that hold you back and break them. “Perfectionism is a desperate attempt to live up to impossible standards,” according to Acuff. These impossible standards are secret rules or limiting beliefs we all abide by that direct our work and make it more difficult to complete the tasks we’ve committed to. A common secret rule is that only miserable, difficult goals count says Acuff like running to lose weight because that sounds more taxing than Zumba, which you’d rather be doing in the first place. He recommends replacing any cumbersome rules with new ones that are flexible, reasonable, healthy and truthful. If you’re looking to better understand your behavior when it comes to time management, goal setting and productivity, than I highly recommend reading Finish. It’s light, funny and easy to read with strong takeaways you can immediately act on.

As a motivational speaker I read this book to glean some knowledge to give my clients and it did not disappoint. I am big fan of Jon Acuff’s writing and this book is chock full of practical advice as opposed to another book full of platitudes. Jon challenges you to figure out what your roadblocks are and gives you practical ways to tackle them. Trying to lose 20 pounds? Cut that goal in half- lose 10 and then do it again! He also asks you to examine your « why » which I think is crucial in reaching goals. He also talks about the secret rules you have for yourself, e.g. “Success is bad” , “Skinny people are slutty” and asks you to examine what “limiting beliefs” you have that might be causing you to self-sabotage."Goals you refuse to chase don’t disappear, they become ghosts that haunt you."That’s the line that is really resonating for me. As a four time auditioner for NBC’s "The Voice" I love that it is referenced in the book, this last time I auditioned, I started thinking about the “reality” of what I was chasing, realized I don’t want to “catch” that so it “freed” me from chasing it down. You definitely will not be disappointed in this book. Click to buy! Go FINISH what you keep putting off!

This book badly needed editing and barely clears the threshold of being a proper book. There are grammatical errors, fonts change randomly, etc. Most disappointing of all, all the pictures that looked so beautiful on-line are printed in black and white and often distorted because they were not formatted correctly for print! Given that the "Look Inside" feature claimed to be showing the print edition, I think this is deceptive advertising by Amazon. In terms of content, it is not a travel guide as much as a somewhat random collection of tips. Sure, some of the tips look pretty good, but you will not get by with just this guide. There are very few maps, there is no index, and very scant information on basics, like getting around by train, etc. I am really disappointed and almost sent it back, but my husband had already started marking in it.

A great travel guidebook anyone could ever read. I usually used google for guidance during travelling because I thought could find the simplest, easiest, and quickest ways to plan my itinerary but this book is better than any typical travel guidebook on google. It does not simply list things-to-do or must-go-places, it helps you make the most of your trip to the Land of the Rising Sun. Interesting travel tips and exact times for certain areas should be toured are really helpful.

This is probably the simplest (in a great way!) and easiest to read travel book I have ever purchased. My favorite thing about this e-book is that it has brilliant pictures that show you the culture and sights in Japan. The book really has all you need for a short getaway to Japan and if you’re feeling overwhelmed in trying to figure out where or how to start planning your Japan trip. I definitely recommend this book if Japan is on your travel list or even if you’re just thinking about going there on day! I’m excited to start planning my trip to Japan soon.

Decent enough and inexpensive supplemental guidebook with some useful tips, and some not so great.... The maps mostly aren’t legible, so that’s a shame, though you can find most anything online with good resolution now. This should not be your go to book for a trip to Japan, but it can help whittle down destinations if you’re feeling overwhelmed. I wasn’t thrilled with the last 15 pages being excerpts and adverts for other publications, I can see a page or two of other products, not 15. I am also in complete disagreement with one of the bonus tips too, it is suggested in the Kyoto section to skip the Ginkaku-ji (Silver Temple) in favor of the Kinkaku-ji (Gold Temple), they are not “almost the same” and I would argue that anyone with half a soul would prefer the less gaudy and beautifully serene Ginkaku-ji....

Great book, very interesting, good writing and great illistrations. Glad I took the time to read through it. Even though I don't intend to travel to Japan anytime soon I still enjoyed this a lot. It's always nice to have the knowledge available. I especially enjoyed the illistrations in this book, made reading this more enjoyable.

This book is just what we need. It will accompany us with Must-See Japan by Tom Fay. I'm disappointed in the Westerner's review of this book as poorly written grammatically with non-color photos. This is a little book written by Japanese natives, not Westerners. The insights and tips are more important than non-essential grammar and flashy photos. The price is cheap by comparison to other travel books and it gives just the information one needs to negotiate Japan - by Japanese tour guides themselves! Bravo!

This book provides a light amount of detail on the most important places to visit on a trip to Japan. But it is lacking in 3 important items that I could not believe were missing from a travel guide. There is not a single map of any area discussed or even a map of Japan itself. Second, there are no page numbers?! Third, which goes hand in hand with the lack of page numbers, there is no index of what is in the guide. The Table of Contents list chapters but without page numbers you have to constantly fan through the pages to find a chapter. OK, so I added color coded tabs to everything which made it more acceptable, but why should a reader have to do this? Can't recommend it.

Filled with great tips to travel in Japan. This book is not the typical travel guide that simply listed things to do and places to visit with no consideration for travelers who travel on tight or flexible budget. This book gives you tips on how to experience the full fun of Japan as well as gives you estimation on how much it will cost. I recommend it to people who are looking at a complete guide to travel in Japan.
