I've been eagerly awaiting the publication of Janine Marsh's memoir, My Good Life in France, and was honoured to receive an ARC for an honest review. It's no surprise that this book is everything readers hope it will be. With her sharp insight after many years as an ex-pat in France and her engaging sense of humour, Marsh takes us on the bumpy road of highs and lows restoring a "truly awful" (her words) property in the north of France that captured her heart.Through the author's eyes and experiences we discover the (relatively unknown to tourists) Seven Valleys area in the Pas-de-Calais, which is now on my "must visit" list. Easily drawn into Marsh's entertaining narrative by her sharp observations and warm-hearted nature, we get to know her neighbours, the local traditions and her growing family of dogs, cats, and assorted feathered friends.Thank goodness for an understanding husband who is also an enterprising craftsman. There are challenges that would deter most from staying the course. Yet not only do the Marshes survive, but a brilliant new career path is born. This book is a delightful read that I highly recommend.

I have not read a book in a very long time (shame on me) because I care for my aged mother and have a small chicken farm AND a brain injured son, which keep me hopping. For the past 4 years, I would de-stress at night, by hopping into bed with my laptop and looking at real estate in France. I saw major projects, like Janine and Mark's barn-home, and some old, stone homes that needed upgrading but not to the extent that their's did. I always got lost in the fantasy of moving there....growing a few veggies, herbs and flowers....raising chickens, learning the language and leaving the stress of American politics in the dust. While reading Janine's book....I was living vicariously through her. Her description of the first house they looked at had me chucking out loud...I had seen so many houses that fit that description. I even wondered if I had seen THAT house on the Legget website! I learned so much...laughed out loud, and got incredibly anxious when I saw there was only one chapter left. Now what to do? Read it again??I do hope Janine will write another...and soon. I love her style, wit and knowledge. I doubt I will ever move there....much to my chagrin, but do hope to go back again. (I was there with my late husband for our honeymoon, in '99) Funny, I was only there for 2 weeks, but felt homesick once I came back to the states. I get that homesick feeling whenever I watch a French movie....and got it while reading the book. A great read. Seriously! Vive la France!

Love this, love this, love this. From the first sentence Janine sets the reader up for a journey into the joys and tribulations of of becoming an Expat. On a "whim" she and her husband embarked on the challenge of restoring a dilapidated building in northern France. With minimal language skills, small budget, and the frustration of dealing with the French bureaucracy, she found a way to maintain her optimism and sense of humor. The reader gets a reality check of what it takes in time, effort and money to take on such a project. Along the way you learn about the climate and culture of this region-the things that would endear you or terrify you. While I never planned on setting up a future home in northern, rural France, I discovered I will need more money and patience and a never ending sense of humor to successfully maneuver my move.I found myself chuckling out loud! Can't wait for a sequel.

I've purchased over twenty books about France this year and My Good Life in France by Janine Marsh is my #1 favorite. This book details, without providing long, drawn out details, the author's decision to leave London and live in France. I love how creative the author is with words and the storyline. At times she made me feel as if I was right there observing her adventure in person. Filled with rich details and stories about French people, the French culture, French foods, and language, as well as French customs and landscape. Love, love this book and would highly recommend it to anyone hungry for details about what it is like to relocate one's self to France.

I had been so looking forward to this book and when I downloaded it on kindle I started it immediately and literally could not stop til the end. Brits Janine Marsh and her husband impulsively bought an awesomely dated, rundown house in northern France. This books is an accounting of that renovation over many years. It is also an exploration of very loving relationships in her family and with the many people who have become her "family" in France. Marsh writes very well indeed and her writing captures her persistence, curiosity, courage, intelligence, always good humor and most important her love of all things French and of all animals, especially discarded ones. She never liked to cook but fortunately her husband does. Despite the trials (and there were many) they are still in the house in France and friends and family still visit! She still loves all things French and admits she is still learning though she studied French in school for years. She writes an ongoing blog that now has more than 500,000 followers! I am now rereading The Good Life in France.

Amazon.com Review

When Henry and his friend agree to go to Fitchburg to see the country, they each choose very different methods of travel, based on their very different approaches to life. This charming little story illustrates through minimal text and fantastically stylized paintings the concepts Henry David Thoreau spent his life trying out. While Henry (the storybook Henry is a bear) collects flowers to press, strolls on stone walls, finds bird nests, and gathers blackberries, his friend toils and sweats to earn enough money for the train fare to Fitchburg. With subtle nods at Thoreau and his real-life pals Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne (Henry's friend cleans out Mrs. Thoreau's chicken house, moves the bookcases in Mr. Emerson's study, and pulls weeds in Mr. Hawthorne's garden), D.B. Johnson cleverly introduces young readers to these important historical figures. No moralizing here, just a gentle, humorous look at the different paths each person may choose in life. Johnson chose a passage in Thoreau's Walden (the passage is included in the informative author's note) as inspiration for this delightful picture book, which Thoreau himself would probably be proud to read. From Publishers Weekly

Freelance illustrator Johnson models his striking debut on a passage from Walden, in which Thoreau advocates journeying on foot over buying a ticket to ride. Henry, a brown bear attired in a brick-red duster and wide-brimmed sun hat, is a kinder, gentler fellow than his cantankerous inspiration. His ursine friend, wearing town clothes and conspicuously toting a pocket watch, makes plans to meet him in Fitchburg, a town 30 miles distant. Spreads contrast the pair's respective travel strategies: on the left, Henry's friend does chores for unseen Mrs. Alcott, Mr. Hawthorne and Mr. Emerson to earn train fare; right-handed pages picture a leisurely Henry examining flora and fauna, admiring the view and excavating a honey tree as he strides toward his destination. At the end of the summer day, "His friend sat on the train in a tangle of people./ Henry ate his way through a blackberry patch." Johnson inventively demonstrates Thoreau's advice with kaleidoscopic illustrations in variegated colors and gently skewed perspectives that weigh fast-paced urban existence against an unmaterialistic life in the woods. Both bears make it to Fitchburg, but Henry's friend wears a blank stare, in contrast to Henry's bright-eyed, curious gaze. Johnson implies what money can and cannot buy, and encourages slowing down to experience nature. With graceful understatement, he presents some complicated ideas assuredly and accessibly. Ages 4-8. I've loved the writings of Henry David Thoreau since I was in my late teens, so I was very excited to read about Henry Hikes to Fitchburg when it was published in 2000. I bought the book immediately and read it as soon as it arrived. Not only was I not disappointed, I felt as if I had been given a chance to re-experience parts of Walden in a new way. D.B. Johnson takes a one-paragraph passage from Walden and extrapolates it into a beautifully illustrated story that brings to life Thoreau's point -- the journey is its own reward. In this picture book Henry and his friend are both bears, dressed in 1840s New England clothing. The illustrations tell the story of the tedium of working for wages versus the enjoyment of nature. I especially like the illustration which shows Henry crossing the Sudbury River. Highly Recommended.

I find this book to have a good solid moral foundation and a decent flow to the overall story. The illustration in this book is top-notch and love looking at it. My son loves it as well. I wasn't sure if the story would be boring to him, but it is not. He asks me to read this to him for bedtime. Whether you read Henry David Thoreau back in the day, or not, it is still a good book and I would recommend it to a friend.

Best children's book to introduce the ideas of a great American author, Henry David Thoreau.

I'm simple-minded and easily addled, so Henry's simple approach to getting to Fitchburg reminds me that it's not all bad to leave some of the technical complexities to solve themselves, and to travel light, examining the rewarding beauties and curiosities of nature along the way, instead of speeding headlong to a prosaic goal, where we'll likely spend at least 10% of our time waiting for something or someone.

This is a fantastic book, based on the writings of Henry David Thoreau. Great for kids and adults alike.

With a wonderful art style, this book presents an excellent story that my kids love to this day, and can be read and reread with the same enjoyment each time. It’s a great gift for new parents, and I highly recommend it.

Don Johnson's clever book contrasting Henry's smell-the-roses approach to life with his friend's more conventional idea about the value of efficiency would make a good addition to any child or school's library. Based on a quote by Henry David Thoreau, the book is a welcome antidote to the plethora of books aimed at the aspiring "Tiger Mom" market. The illustrations in the author's distinctive cubistic style lend an almost otherworldly and inviting element to the story. My wish for every child of high-pressure, well-meaning helicopter parents is that they have a relative or friend who will read "Henry Hikes to Fitchburg" to them at an early and impressionable age.

Bought it for school but it's a nice children's book with local history for me.

“The kimono has long been a symbol of Asian femininity and Japan’s national identity. In the profusely illustrated Kimono: A Modern History (Reaktion), Terry Satsuki Milhaupt, one of the world’s leading experts in Japanese textiles, offers insights into the culture of modern Japan as well as the evolving status of women. . . . Is the kimono art? Is it fashion? It’s both, and much more.” (Boston Globe)

Highly recommended for anyone interested in textiles, their history, and use throughout Japanese recent (18th century to today) history. Knowledgeable, scholarly, but with the general reader in mind, the late author put together an outstanding book with many color photographs--not just the usual, but many from not only museum collections, but also private collections. This book is being considered the catalogue for the current "Kimono: A Modern History" exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City that will run through January 5th. While not all the kimono are featured, those in the exhibit can be viewed on the Museum's website. More detailed history of how today's young Japanese began to reclaim their traditional dress, but also adapt it to their own particular fashion needs, with comments on their creativity. A worthy addition to anyone's library as an additional special insight to the traditional dress in Japan. It includes the influence of kimono on not only present-day Japanese designers but western designers like Bonnie Cashin.

I bought this to learn more about kimono after a trip to Japan (in which I fell in love with the artistry and ended up buying two). It's written as a scholarly text, but is engrossing and interesting. For those who haven't read the author's note, the original author sadly died before completing the work, and her husband and publisher finished it for her. It clearly meant a lot to the author and that brought a tear to my eye.

This book helped me write my final research paper for my cultures of east Asia class. Love reading about the Japanese and the history of the Kimono.

this is the the catalogue of the show at the Met, A bit hard to wade through, but definitely a worthwhile addition to akimono library.

Amazing book. The pictures are beautiful and so colorful. Beautifully written and the history is very interesting. Anyone who owns or wishes to own or is curious about Japanese kimonos should buy this book.

a fantastic book, scholarly, complex, and fascinating

A definitive work to accompany a magnificent show.

This should not be mistaken for a coffee table book on kimono (though it would look good there too) as it is the first true history of the modern kimono. Rigorously researched and accessibly written it should be enjoyed by anyone interested in kimono.
