G. Pascal Zachary is a journalist, author, and teacher. This book is a 2008 update to the original 1994 release. Unfortunately even that is a bit dated now with references to Nokia being more influential than Microsoft in setting new digital standards especially in the wireless arena. That hat was passed to Apple and Nokia is now owned by Microsoft. In addition, the book mentions that David Cutler went on to work on the Cairo project but no mention is made in the update that the project was canceled in 1996.Overall it is an enjoyable read and reminds me a lot of "Soul of a New Machine" by Tracy Kidder. It is interesting to see the personalities at work on the NT project and the various clashes between the various teams. Much like what happened at Data General with the development of what become the MV/8000.
Excellent story on how a revolutionary operating system was developed and delivered. This tells all the hurdles and sacrifice that the team that developed Windows NT went through. David Cutler was the leader of the team that brought about the revolutionary changes that resulted from the innovation of NT. As a side note, the story includes a look back into the early 90's PC industry. It was fun to note that it was considered extraordinary that NT required 16 Megabytes of RAM. In today's terms this isn't very much but back in the 90's, with RAM prices high, it made the computer needed to run NT very expensive. Overall, really enjoyed the walk through time and all the issues that were faced by a team of 250+ people. The way that the development was brought together and the bugs finalized. It is a really good story if you are interested in the history of the computer industry.
Reading this book, pretty much in one go, felt like a mix of "Pirates of Silicon Valley" and "Inside Windows". There is enough technical content to prevent this book from being shallow (although the distinction between "code writers" and "testers" is ultimately wrong because testers in MS are not people who aimlessly click around, but write elaborate test suites instead - this is mentioned in the book but is not very clear), but the real value is in the personal angle. Author describes the life of NT project through people's stories about the development of the product - direction changes, added features, bug fixing marathons - and the big personal toll it takes on their lives.As a former MS employee, many situations feel familiar to me, however, many things are different now. Teams are bigger, stock options are gone and the culture has changed dramatically towards Dilbert-style, however, there are still teams with great leaders who can rally people to deliver great products.Finally, use of real people's stories and especially their conflicts to describe the process of building complex software is very valuable to anyone who follows MS since many of the young eager people who worked on NT went on to become big shots at MS - from Bob Muglia to Dave Treadwell. Also, this book finally explained to me why Dave Cutler's red jaguar was parked at the spot closest to the entrance of the building.
This was an interesting read overall, especially if you're a computer person. Learning about the personalities and the principles behind the world's most ubiquitous operating system was very enjoyable. I struggled with the structure of the book somewhat and the afterword added for the digital edition felt a little airy-fairy. Also there was quite a bit of profanity in the quotes which I did not enjoy, either. Even so, it is written in a manner that should be accessible to the non-computer-geek and I commend Mr. Zachary for taking something that could be incredibly boring and making it very interesting, especially when portraying the various individuals involved in the birth of NT.
Essential reading for the geek minded. One of the best books written about Microsoft. Really well written and detailed about how an OS was created from the ground up and given a face called Windows NT.I was disturbed by the updated authors comments at the end. He seems to have jumped ship and taken sides against MS at the end. Even though MS lost its way for a bit, it is WAY back in the game. A basic reality lost on the authors comments at the end. Pity, and sad, and shows what is really going on in the tech press today, and how the press in general can and will go out of it's way to shape the opinions of people that don't necessarily have good information to go on.
This book gets better with every reading. even the updated comment by the author was a pleasant surprise. Having grown with the industry, attending lots of computer meetings and computer shows in the early and late 80's I find Showstopper brings back many very pleasant memories.For the newer computer enthusiasts the book should be very interesting and fun.Most of all there is a clear illustration of just how brilliant Gates and his people were then, a trend they clearly have maintained inspite of some very determined efforts against them.Great read.

I purchased this book because I first checked it out at the library. The library copy was larger in size and it had color pictures inside. The book I received is not the one pictured, it has no color pictures and on the cover, it says "Compliments of the Merck Journey for Control Program". The recipes are the same. This is the only reason I kept this book. If you receive a book with the authors wearing green on the cover you could have paid for a "free" copy, compliments of Merck which have the same recipes, no pictures but priced as the book shown. Now about the recipes, the sodium and carbohydrate grams are too high in almost all the dishes. I had to make my own adjustments. Not what I expected.
The meat recipes were good I will be trying many. But I was just shocked to see so many carbohydrates and recipes calling for sugar. Maybe the book is dated but I don't see any mention of sugar substitutes. I expected more from this book. No substitutes for flour smh I was looking for healthy options for soul food. There are some good recipes in here don't get me wrong. There just isn't enough diabetes friendly recipes for me.
Im a type 2 diabetic and these recipes are AWESOME! Flavorful and healthy. Did i mention i can still eat the things i love!
Lots of information and recipes for diabetics. One of the best cookbooks I have purchased. Recommended by a nutritionist- that is how I learned about it.
So many times we purchase cookbooks that have dishes we have to go out and purchase ingredients we have no clue what else we would use them for except this "particular" dish. This cookbook uses items we already have available and use on a consistent basis. It is just what the "bodies" in this house needs. Thanks you both from the bottom of my spice rack. Just kidding...but thank you for your insightfulness.
I bought this for a friend whose father has diabetes. The recipes in it are simple, contain the nutritional info a diabetic needs to know, and look delicious. Just reading them made my mouth water. This is apparently almost the only soul food diabetic cookbook in existence. There is another listed on amazon by the same authors but it is much more expensive and has fewer recipes so I have not even considered it. For anyone who is diabetic and likes soul food, I highly recommend this cookbook.
I have several recipes that I am shopping for this weekend. I'm excided to see how they come out.

And, I must admit, I've was somewhat skeptical of Sheldrake's previous books on "morphic resonance". But being an open-minded person, I am glad when I can change my mind, and I am glad to report that this is a worthy book--because of its practicality. Sheldrake confronts some of the outstanding questions facing "PSIence"--and proposes level-headed experiments that readers themselves can become engaged in. Science has often made its greatest advances not when areas of the unknown were summarily dismissed--but when a proper balance between paradigm shifts and experimentation fell into place. It is conceivable that books such as this may help with the evolution of PSI to science.

Rupert Sheldrake (born 1942) is an English biochemist and plant physiologist who has also written or co-written books such as A New Science of Life: The Hypothesis of Morphic Resonance,The Presence of the Past: Morphic Resonance and the Habits of Nature,Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home: Fully Updated and Revised,The Physics of Angels: Exploring the Realm Where Science and Spirit Meet.Natural Grace: Dialogues on creation, darkness, and the soul in spirituality and science, etc.He wrote in the Preface to this 1995 book, "The idea of writing the present book arose ... (when) I was asked what I would do if I ... wanted to support interesting and productive research with limited resources. My answer was to draw up a list of simple, low-cost experiments that could change the world, and then to encourage this research program... I finally selected the seven in this book. So, this is not just a book, but a broad-based research program, with an open invitation to participate."Here are some additional quotations from the book:"Committed Skeptics tend to equate the mechanistic worldview with reason itself and are passionate in its defense. Parapsychologists are so accumstomed to these critical responses that they are unusually aware of the pitfalls of experimenter effects and other sources of bias. But conventional science is not subject to a similar degree of skeptical scrutiny." (Pg. 172-173)"Many scientists carry out experiments with strong expectations about the outcome, and with deep-rooted assumptions about what is and what is not possible. Can their expectations influence their results? The answer is yes." (Pg. 210)"I cannot foresee the outcome of the experiments proposed here, but I think there is a good chance that at least some of them will yield very interesting results. I would not have written this book otherwise." (Pg. 244)
I picked up this volume because its title suggested that it would encourage hands-on science activities that are essential to good teaching and effective learning. Unfortunately, I discovered on reading it that the author combines a deep antagonism for the scientific "establishment" with credulity for numerous fringe ideas. The first experiment that he suggests tests the hypothesis that your pet uses psychic powers to tell when you'll be home for dinner! Sheldrake frequently presents anecdotes as "evidence". The "do it yourself" promise of the title is broken for the reader who doesn't intend to begin raising homing pidgeons or doesn't happen to work in a laboratory capable of measuring the physical constants (such as the speed of light) to nine significant figures. Far too few cautions about the pitfalls of psychic research are given (in chapters about the feeling of being stared at, or "feeling" the touch of a severed limb). Despite the nearly fatal flaws of the book, I liked a part of its message, that important science can still be done by amateurs. That's about the only aspect of this book that is commendable.
Neither a skeptic nor a believer in science, the author was searching for an opponent to box with -- more like friendly sparring. His theory of morphic resonance states that all matter and energy is governed or shaped by some sort of evolutionary habit or cumulative memory. If his perspective were broader he would fit in with David Bohm and other science mystics, but Rupert chose to fence himself in the "little science" surrounding pet dogs, homing pigeons, migrating birds, termite colonies, phantom limbs, evil eyes, and the placebo effect. Why Rupert thinks that clearcut experimental results in these areas of anecdotal, imaginative tall tales would support his morphic field theory, I haven't a clue. What is more likely is that these animals and insects have the hidden ability to detect Gaia's gravitational curved space (much like air and ship LORAN navigators read lines of position).The author was forever hinting that chaos theory, Jung's collective unconscious or other ideas would someday reveal the whole story without telling what that would gain us (for instance, if we accepted that the fundamental constants were slightly variable). Although I would encourage new viewpoints such as morphic fields to shape the matter of the universe, I was left with the impression that this writer bit off way more than his dog could chew.
