This was an enjoyable read. The characters, Kevin and Ember, were interesting, well-developed and have chemistry. The story is interesting and well-written with a happily ever after. In addition to receiving an arc, I purchased the book for my collection.
I really enjoyed Ember and Kevin's story! It's well written, a good plot with great characters. The story is fairly fast paced and quick read. Their story reminds me somewhat of a Cinderella story. Ember has had a tough life. She has done the best she can. She manages to get tied up with a not so good guy and finds her self on the street in England with no food, no money and no place to live. She manages to find an abandoned place to sleep. She goes to the park just to be surrounded by people and not feel all alone. She is sitting playing her guitar and focused on her music; realizing people are throwing money in her case. The poor girl has not eaten in three days when a man sits to listen to her play. She does not realize he is there. This is where the real story starts. I really enjoyed this story and loved the end. It's some what sad but there is a lot of joy and love. The real question is can she learn to trust again?*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.*
Her Protector by Summer Cooper is a light, fun read.Ember was in a difficult relationship with Graham. She is rescued by Kevin who uses his wealth to change her life. The story is cute, sweet, a little hot, but left me a little wanting?Kevin has a couple of dreams that don’t really have a purpose in the story other than for him to have a dream. The situation with Graham is never fully resolved. It just seemed a tiny bit unfinished…all of their problems just disappeared, but the resolutions weren’t fully explained. That said, I did enjoy the premise of the book and the happy ending.I voluntarily received an Advance Reader Copy of this book for an honest review.
i read this book as part of an arc program This is the love story between Kevin and Ember. Ember was a young woman who survived being raised by her drug addicted mother after her grandmother died. When Ember was old enough she left with a boyfriend named Graham and he was not a good guy. when she went to London with him, she refused to sell drugs for him, so he kicked her out and left her homeless and broke in a foreign country. Ember was a musician and decided to play in a park in hopes of making enough money to eat. One night she was playing and she met Kevin. Kevin was the son of a successful businessman who owned hotels all over the world. When they talked, Kevin realized Ember needed to eat, so he took to the closest restaurant. While she was eating, Kevin offered her a room at his hotel and told her he expected nothing in return. He told her his father thought he was too selfish and he wanted to help her. Ember knew she needed help and agreed to go with Kevin. When he showed her the room, she didn't want to be alone and begged him to stay. They had an instant connection and Kevin spent the night, but he had to fly to the US the next morning. Kevin arranged for clothes and a plane ticket to be sent to Ember and told her there was a room for her at his hotel in the US. Kevin also arranged an interview for her at the hotel in Nashville as a singer in the hotel's bar. Ember was having a lot of success singing and her and Kevin started seeing each other when he was there., but Kevin was called away a lot for business at the other hotels. Things were going well until Ember heard things about Kevin and she started to doubt his feelings. Kevin loved Ember, but he never told her or asked what she wanted, he just did everything for her as a surprise. When he found out she left, he vowed to find her and get her back. This was an emotional read. I felt for Ember and everything she went through. I think Kevin and Ember really loved each other, but he was so used to having things done when he wanted and done his way. I think he didn't realize how much he loved her until she was gone. Good one.
Ember is stranded in London when her boyfriend kicks her to the curb, she flew to London from the U.S. to sing but her boyfriend had other ideas. Now she has nowhere to go, no money and just her guitar so she ends up peddling in a park, playing her guitar and singing while people throw money into her guitar case. Kevin hears her voice and is captivated and knows he wants to get to know why she looks so lost. He finds out her story and helps her out, putting her up in one of his family’s hotel and buying her ticket back to the U.S. Even though Ember is wary of Kevin because of her ex, she trusts him and brings her back to life and in the meanwhile she brings meaning back to his. But his constant travel and not sharing what he has in store for her brings her doubts especially when someone comes and decides to ruin what they have....will he find her before it’s too late.A good read with steam that started out great but lost something near the end. Too many things left up in the air to make it complete for me, such as what happened to the stalker, did they ever talk about was bothering her such as him leaving for weeks with no contact. There were too many things left unsaid between them when he finally shows her that she’s the one. I would have liked a heart to heart between them first. I did enjoy the little drama between them and the quick resolve, it was just missing the talk. I did like the flow of it and loved Ember’s strength and determination, drawing a line when it came to her ex. The characters were good and even though Kevin was still a bit of a mystery to me, I did enjoy his revelations about himself and when he finally stopped wallowing and went after Ember.*I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*

American author Christopher Castellani has written an almost epic novel about male authors and the men who loved them. The book, "Leading Men", features real people - Tennessee Williams, Frank Merlo, Truman Capote, Jack Burns, among others - while adding to them a cast of fictional characters. (It's handy to read this book on an Ipad or other devise which makes it easy to refer to Wiki when you have a question about a character in the book.) The book is perhaps a little too long, but the relationships between the characters need a fair amount of space to develop.Castellani has invented characters as he is writing a fictionalised version of real events. Not an easy concept to either write or read, it's the only way he can tell his story. The book takes place in the 1940's to the 1960's Tennessee Williams and his lover/aide Frank Merlo live the good life in Italy. Williams is writing during the day, while Merlo keeps Williams' life and household in running order. The two men are not necessarily faithful to each other and they do fight a fair amount, but the reader can easily discern the love between them. Their friends (and rivals) Truman Capote and Jack Burns - both with their own lovers - come in and out of the story. And added to the story as fictional characters are a Swedish mother-and-daughter, Bitte and Anya Blomgren - who meet up with Williams and Merlo in Portofino and are sort of added to their lives. Anya is based on Liv Ullmann, the Norwegian actress and director. Frank Merlo and Anya become life-long friends. But Frank Merlo, who I think is the main character in the book, does not have a long life-time. He dies of lung cancer in a New York hospital in 1963, after his relationship with "Tenn" has withered. Tennessee Williams knows and acknowledges his creative juices flourished during his 20 or so years with Frank Merlo. Still friends with Anya - who has go on to become a highly regarded actress - he writes a short play about Frank he gives to Anya. What Anya does with this not-particularly-well-written play is explored near the end of the book.Christopher Castellano's book is character-driven. A bit of a plot but what's there mainly exists to service the characters. The Frank Merlo character is a particularly well-drawn, nuanced look at a man who is comfortable with his sexuality but is uncertain about his place in his world. He may book airline tickets to Spain for Williams, but he has not-so-secret desires to become an actor/singer/dancer and find success in his own right.Castellani's book is a wonderful read, though not for every reader. Make sure you read all the reviews you can before you buy the book or take it out of the library. As always with well-written fiction, I'm left with the urge to find out as much as I can about the "real people" and their stories.
Leading Men by Christopher CastellaniThis a very dull attempt to make something of the relationship between Frank Merlo and his lover Tennesse Williams that lasted from 1947 to Merlo's death in 1963. The book opens in July of 1953 when Truman Capote throws a party in Portofino, Italy. There, the mother/daughter duo Bitte/Anja Blongren become part of the story. On the writer's note at the end of the book, the author states: "Ironically, it was only after the entirely fictional Anja entered the narrative that the plot began to take shape..." However, it does not. The plot is a mess. There are at least four timelines: 1953, 1963--Frank's death, 1983, and the present. Chapters run back and forth without any rhyme or reason. The narration is a somewhat third person point of view which leaves the reader without a voice to concentrate on. The plot is very boring-- it's as if nothing happens at all. The characters themselves are one dimensional--I never cared for any of them.Once again, I was swayed by the New York Times to buy a book. Once again, I was very disappointed with their recommendation. I strongly recommend you stay away from this book--for that matter stay away from anything the New York Times recommends!
Christopher Castellani writes with fierceness and beauty. “Leading Men†is a fascinating story, filled with romance and moving prose. There’s nothing better as a reader than to be transported in time and space, to empathize with the characters, to never want to put a book down. Castellani accomplishes all of that and more with his rich, weighty, heartbreaking renderings of Frank Merlo and the constellation of characters swirling around Tennessee Williams. Grazie.
As with his previous books, Chris Castellani drops you into the picture: you are there and you are part of the novel's world. His writing, as always, is awesome! I do agree with those who have labelled this a page-turner but I recommend that you settle in and turn the pages slowly.
Christopher Castellani imagines a world in which Tennessee Williams and his lover, Frank Merlo, travel to Portofino to attend a Truman Capote party and encounter a young Anja Blomgren. This chance meeting then changes the trajectory of their fictional lives, with Anja and Frank forming a deep and tender bond, and Tenn later writing for Anja a play about Frank that goes undiscovered until after both his and Frank's deaths. Moving between 1950s Italy, 1960s Manhattan and an undisclosed city decades later, Castellani's imagination and lush prose carry this novel seamlessly through time and through this alternative history of love, jealousy, ambition, loss and heartbreak.
I so wish I could love this book as much as I wanted to. I've read just about everything Williams ever wrote, and was immensely moved by John Lahr's magnificent biography of him, so I had high hopes for this. The sections devoted to Tenn and Frank's relationship and to Italy in the 1950s and Truman Capote et al are sometimes lovely and often evocative. But then the novel gets cluttered up with far too many scenes involving a fictional Swedish film star, about whom I couldn't care less. I actually found myself skipping past her scenes and just reading the other bits, which are often truncated and move back and forth in time, which disallows a full-throated emotional connection. Ah well.
It wasn't. The characters felt hollow as they acted out the lives of the rich and famous. I barely reached the quarter-mark when I'd had it. Just plain dull.
Leading Men is proposed as fiction centered on Tennessee Williams and his long-time lover. It instead veers off to other characters in prose that seldom rises above the pedestrian. Anyone who sticks this novel out needs a larger social circle and/or a literary mentor.

NLP is an explicit and powerful model of human experience and communication. Using the principles of NLP it is possible to describe any human activity in a detailed way that allows you to make many deep and lasting changes quickly and easily. A few specific examples of things you can learn to accomplish are: (1) cure phobias and other unpleasant feeling responses in less than an hour, (2) help children and adults with "learning disabilities" (spelling and reading problems, etc.) overcome these limitations, often in less than an hour, (3) eliminate most unwanted habits - smoking, drinking, over-eating, insomnia, etc., in a few sessions, (4) make changes in the interactions of couples, families and organizations so that they function in ways that are more satisfying and productive, (5) cure many physical problems - not only most of those recognized as "psychosomatic" but also some that are not - in a few sessions. Actually, NLP can do much more than the kinds of remedial work mentioned above. The same principles can be used to study people who are unusually talented in any way, in order to determine the structure of that talent. That structure can then be quickly taught to others to give them the foundation for that same ability. This kind of intervention results in generative change, in which people learn to generate and create new talents and behaviors for themselves and others. A side effect of such generative change is that many of the problem behaviors that would otherwise have been targets for remedial change simply disappear. We are on the threshold of a quantum jump in human experience and capability.

Slow read. Not much beef to this book. Says its going to be like this in the intro so you slowly figure it out as you go along and you may or may not understand it in the end. I prefer blunt and to the point. I dont readfor entertainment, but to learn. This book could have been a quarter of it size, maybe even a pamphlet. Cant really sell pamphlets though... be warned
This was the book that started it all. ...at least it was for me. I forget exactly how I stumbled upon the work of Bandler and Grinder, but the result was an explosion in my awareness of interpersonal communication. It was quite a wakeup call for a callow young man still fresh out of high school! The content mainly consists of lecture transcriptions taken from a seminar conducted by the authors in the late seventies, so keep in mind that there are parts wherein group exercises are described with feedback offered from both the authors and volunteer participants that may seem to bear little relevance to the reader. Nevertheless, the theories here presented are timeless. That being said, I would not recommend this as the best book on the subject. Yes, it is a classic, and yes, it is an excellent introduction to the subject, but remember that this was written now decades ago and that both of the authors have made quantum developments in their studies since then. The prospective reader might be advised to look into more recent works by the authors and their students. My discovery of the work of Bandler and Grinder was important to me for several reasons. First, it introduced me to the concept of modalities as presented by family therapist, Virginia Satir. Even more importantly, it led me to the work of Milton H. Erickson and his work concerning the amenability of the subconscious mind to suggestion. This laid the groundwork which would ultimately serve as my foundation to later spiritual practices. As a point of interest, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Bandler while working in a bookstore that he happened to be shopping in several years back. To this day, he was one of the most magnetic personalities I have ever encountered. His voice was raspy and he gave an odd handshake. I only had a moment to speak with him, so I had to make my question count. I mentioned how his theories bore resemblance to many of those postulated in the Western Esoteric Tradition, and asked if there was any conscious relationship between the two. In response, he leaned in and told me that he was in possession of what he imagined to be one of the largest occult libraries in North America. At that, I decided that his work had served its purpose in my life and I chose to devote myself completely to my esoteric practice instead.Regardless, this is an excellent book that is well worthy of the attention of those who wish to play a more active role in their communications and to sit in the driver's seat of their lives.
Frogs into Princes (1979) is the first-ever comprehensive book on Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). It's a seminar transcript [or "trance"-script, to be punny (since its co-founder Richard Bandler is also a hypnotist)] that was edited and published by John Stevens [a.k.a. Steve Andreas, who studied under Abe Maslow (hierarchy-of-needs) and Fritz Perls (founder of gestalt therapy)].It's so well organized and presented, together with a detailed introduction, that you feel like you're a part of the live-audience. This leads to the paradoxical problem of reading the book too casually, similarly to passively watching a performance, as opposed to treating it as the actual manual of techniques and profound concepts that it really is (which are based on extensive research that began in 1973). The paradox is that that's exactly how the authors (Bandler and John Grinder) want you to read it - because you learn more, as they tell you, subconsciously - without attempting to consciously analyze or memorize the (otherwise overwhelming) new terminology and ideas. Ideally, you should re-read the whole book immediately after you're done with your initial reading, so you could finally completely understand the proper attitude and approach that the authors are trying to instill within you (yes, you must read it twice).NLP is not a household name as such - whereas, its most famous teacher, for example, is: Tony Robbins, who was trained by co-founder Grinder [pronounced as in "grin", not "grind"]; it also is the scientific foundation of popular TV shows like "Lie to Me", which exemplify how to read subtle "eye accessing-cues" (and other body-language) found throughout Frogs Into Princes. As they write (on page 47): "Eye movements and body movements will give you information about process. The proper domain, in our opinion, of professional communicators is process. If you indulge in content, you are going to unavoidably impose part of your belief and value system on the people you communicate with. The kinds of problems that people have, usually have nothing to do with content; they have to do with structure, the form of how they organize their experience."Bandler and Grinder say (on page 9): "Our job is to figure out what it is that effective therapists do intuitively or unconsciously, and to make up some rules that can be taught to someone else." They have done a phenomenal job of that over the years. In addition to educating you, they will also humor you - as in the following interspersed witticisms:(page 9): "[Academics] are not interested in the real world, and having lived in it I can sometimes understand why."(page 32): "You can't even spell 'phonetics' phonetically!"(page 114): "...remembering to breathe; oxygen is essential for this whole process."(page 166): "It's important for some people to have the illusion that their conscious mind controls their behavior. It's a particularly virulent form of insanity among college professors, psychiatrists, and lawyers."Towards the end (page 190) of this pioneering 194-page book, they ask rhetorically "How can I make things really groovy?" - which is the above title of my review [that you've probably noticed at the subconscious level, right?] - after which they proceed to briefly discuss the limitless potential within NLP for "generative" change. For those of you who might only want the latest, condensed, quick-and-easy, "self-help" version of NLP, I highly recommend Bandler's "Get the Life You Want" (2008). That one, you don't have to go over twice - and you could use it as a "pocket-guide", too. Frogs Into Princes - and especially, The Structure of Magic (vol. 1: 1975 & vol. 2: 1976) - is intended more for researchers or serious students of NLP.Great books!
While I ordered it a few weeks ago, I've only just started reading it. What I've read so far is quite interesting.
