unexpectedly loved this book! Lizzy Hawker is an amazing athlete, yet she writes in an unassuming way - not falsely humble, but with a genuine love for running long in gorgeous but challenging terrain and a matter-of-fact delivery that makes it seem like she is recounting her adventures to friends. She is able to evoke the feeling of her races and runs along with the places she runs through. and She is an amazingly accomplished athlete without the big ego you would expect.
In the last 48 hours I dove into the mountainous world of the Alps and the Himalayas running in spirit for hundreds of miles along rocky mountain trails. I stopped to sleep and eat and use the bathroom. It is extremely rare that a book pulls me in as this book did and I have the luxury of time to finish in in almost one solid sitting. It is a wonderful read, a great love story for the sport of running, for the mountains, and for life. The challenges we set ourselves or that life presents us with are what make Lizzy's story and our own individual stories rich and worthy of sharing. We each have a story to tell and we belong to each others stories. Lizzy tells hers very eloquently. Thank you for sharing it with us!!
Lizzy hawker has done a great job catching the spirit of trail running and putting it down on paper. This is not just a story of success, rainbows, lollipops and happiness - Lizzy talks through her hard times and challenges, what drives her, what made her keep going and how she achieved it. A well written narrative with a storyline suitable for a movie. If you like to dream big, read this book
I read a lot of books written by and for runners, but this novel from Lizzy Hawker is exceptional. It is very inspiring, and makes you think about what are the real important things in life.If you are into running, its a must, if not, its still a good read.
I found the beginning of this book to be quite engaging -- the story of a woman starting on her journey as an elite ultrarunner, and discovering that she had talents she didn't know she possessed.I read on, and on, and on ... and the rest of the book was filled with more of the same. After a while the stories become dull and repetitive, the tone becomes increasingly arrogant, and one starts to wonder why this book was published at all. Here's a synopsis: She goes to Nepal, runs the same exact route at least three times -- each of which is told in excruciating detail -- and stops at the same inns for the same food. And she's an amazing runner and always wins races except when injured. The beginning would have made for a great magazine piece. Unfortunately, the story in its entirety is just not all that compelling. And to make matters worse, the editing is slipshod and the book is full of odd grammatical inconsistencies. One shining note came very late in the book, with a discussion on the spiritual implications of long-distance running. I found that section to be interesting and fairly thought provoking. If you encounter this book, my recommendation is that you read the first chapter, then skip to the end. You'll not miss out on much by passing over the detailed descriptions of her various running feats. You can look them up on Wikipedia if you're bored.
Bought as gift.
Fantastic chronicle of this woman's venture into endurance running, i.e. ultra marathoning in amazing locations. Her writing is strong and good, the insights into life and running very rewarding and motivational.
Running, adventure, mountaineering, with an introspective dialogue that focuses on a Buddhist approach living life to its fullest, enjoying the moment, living simply, connecting with the world wherever and whatever one is doing...truly inspiring!

I received this book on time. My class just started this week and the book is falling apart. I hope I am not charged for this when I return the book. I have only used the book once. I plan to keep this book until my class is over since it’s an online class and I do not have time to ship it back to get another one.
this was an all right text book to use. I did not have too much trouble comprehending what I read.
The book state was inacceptable to be honest, shouldnt be listed to be sold.
Incredibly boring, required class reading.
Great!!!
After reading the basic "insurance of dummies", I wanted something with greater depth and detail. This book achieves this purpose, yet it is very easy to read. The layout is excellent with thoughtful advice. As a consumer it has enhanced and my respect for the business of insurance and immunized me against the usualmedia diatribes against insurance companies and the insurance consumer.
For an entry level class on insurance this is a good book to start with.
I love this book,so easy to understand

From the Author
The idea for this collection of 101 extraordinary tales from the Kruger National Park arose purely from envy. I have never considered myself particularly lucky in the Park - but then nor have I had the misadventure of a breakdown, a close shave or an animal attack. I am, however, always flabbergasted by the tales of other visitors, recounted - with perhaps a smattering of exaggeration - in rest camps in the evenings, or shared through open car windows when I've asked, 'Seen anything interesting today?' Surely, I thought, others would be as interested as I am in the tales of those for whom Kruger has dealt a more thrilling hand? When I first set about collecting stories for the book four years ago, I never anticipated the sheer wealth of incredible tales, accounts and anecdotes I would receive. I certainly never anticipated that the spectrum of stories would extend so much further than just animal sightings. The book this has become is an entirely different beast from my first humble imaginings. Much like the Park itself, the whole somehow feels greater than the sum of its parts: there are stories of heartbreak, tragedy, high jinks, disappointment and astonishing luck; there are stories from the rest camps, the dirt and tarred roads, the watering holes, the picnic spots and the walking trails; and there are funny stories, curious stories, sad stories, creepy stories and stories that you'll find almost impossible to believe. But each one, I hope, captures and shares a little of the wonder and the thrill we all feel when we pass through the gates, full of anticipation of what lies ahead, into the great expanse of one of Africa's greatest treasures.Hundreds and hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds, from across South Africa and the world, took the time and effort to open their memory vaults, pen their Kruger experiences and submit them for consideration. The criteria for selecting the stories were simple: they should all be extraordinary in one way or another; they should all take place in the Kruger National Park itself, not one of the adjoining reserves of Greater Kruger; they should only take place on any of the publicly accessible tourist roads, rest camps, picnic sites or walking trails; and importantly, they should primarily be the tales of ordinary Park visitors like you and me - not game rangers, field guides or any of the other lucky people who work and live in the Park. The result, I hope, is a celebration of Kruger and what makes it so special amongst all the national parks in Africa. That an extraordinary encounter could just as easily happen to a family in a two-door hatchback on their first sojourn into the Park as a hardened Park veteran in a dusty 4x4, or a wealthy foreign tourist on the back of an open safari vehicle, is evidence of Kruger's unique egalitarian streak. Yes, Kruger is the great safari leveller, and this book is the proof of that. Whether you dip in and out of it, or read it from cover to cover, you'll find yourself excitedly optimistic (or justifiably terrified) that the next time you're in the Park, it could be you...

In preparing to go to a South Africa I selected this book as Kruger was our main destination. The stories were so interesting and often times hilarious - especially being from everyday visitors to the park. One can learn the typical animal sighting and what's unusual in the park. I was so excited on our first day in the park to see the remains of a zebra that a leopard had pulled into the tree to eat something I knew nothing about until reading these tales. Learning the mistakes that led to mishaps I felt "better prepared" to not make the same mistakes. On my actual trip when driving into our remote lodge we encountered our first elephant and when he began shaking his head and starting to charge I knew we were in a dangerous situation and told my husband to get out of the way as quick as possible. I was hoping to not see any of the spitting Cobras and can say I saw a juvenile black mamba from the safety of our vehicle. The tales of encounters with the deadliest snake in South Africa were much more colorful so I was delighted to see one safely! If you are staying in a rest camp there are many tales to prepare you - we didn't have time to stay at a rest camp but would have loved to. Warning - do not read if you are a "worrier" as my husband. I chose not to share some of the more frightening tales as he might change his mind about going on this adventure. Use it as an introduction to the geography and animals of Kruger and to better prepare you for what you might see or encounter in the park!! I felt this read made my trip so much more enjoyable!
This book is a collection of stories about the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Each story is told by the people who experienced the events first hand – some of them are hilarious, some are barely believable and some will make you cringe in fear, but all of them capture the essence of South Africa’s most famous national park – it’s beauty, wildness and exceptional game viewing. Some of the stories are also accompanied by photographs, which further add to the enjoyment. The stories in the book are also a reminder that despite the nearly 2 million visitors to Kruger every year, it is at its heart filled with wild animals who are beautiful and astounding but ultimately unpredictable.I loved this collection of stories, it made me laugh (almost hysterically) at times, it also made me gasp in horror – in particular the picture of the python curled up over the engine of a small car… I think I also learnt a few things, the one that comes to mind is that bats like to live in thatch and snakes like to hunt bats, and the last thing you want to run into in an enclosed space is a Mozambican spitting cobra…I would recommend this book for anyone planning a visit to the Kruger and also for people who have already been lucky enough to experience all that Kruger has to offer. In fact I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good read, whether they have plans to visit the Kruger or not – it is filled with great and real stories and makes for a fun read.
A fun and interesting read, especially because I am currently living for six months about half an hour from the Punta Maria gate for northern Kruger Park. We have visited the park three times while in SA and the book adds highlights to any Kruger visit. The stories are real, true, and typical of Kruger. The book is easy to read and great for short bursts as each story is brief and stands alone. 101of them is super! I liked that the author sectioned the stories geographically because the park is huge and I was able to read about the separate areas I went to prior to going.. Obviously, a book this specific in topic will not perhaps appeal to everyone. However, I recommend it to anyone who likes animals and their interactions with humans. Makes a great bathroom reader. The book is compiled from actual people's personal experiences in their own words so is a bit unusual to its credit.
Having had the privilege of traveling from the US to Kruger National Park in South Africa numerous times I thought I had seen my share of great sightings and experienced once in a life time events in the park but Jeff Gordon has collected tales that had me gasping in astonishment, laughing out loud and even shedding a few tears. If you have been to the park, are thinking of going to the park or if you just love reading great real life stories of those who have gone before you, this is the book to read. I read it on Kindle but will definitely purchase the book in soft cover as well to add to my collection of great books!
If you haven't bought it yet you should be ashamed! 101 stories --- mostly memories of people who have had experiences in-situ --- brilliantly told in short (really short and crisp and to the point --- well done) stories about individual or family events while visiting the world's greatest wild life reserve. Some dramatic and some light-hearted, but all of them colorful and awash with the smell and sounds of --- the bush! Will some of the proceeds benefit the near-extinct Rhino? Not sure but here's hoping. My greatest fear is that soon we shall only see the rhino in zoos, and the rhino will only experience existence in cages. Kruger is the last room in Nature's House and, it needs attention.
As a frequent visitor to South African parks we found this book most entertaining and fascinating. A very good light read proving that anything can happen in the parks but one always seems to come out on the right side! It also reflects the gross stupidity of some visitors to the parks who will hopefully heed these warnings and obey the park rules in future. The reason park rules are made becomes abundantly clear as one reads through the book! We wish we could have had some of the experiences written about in the book, and are equally grateful NOT to have had some of them! We would recommend this book to anyone visiting game parks in Africa.
