I didn't see half of this book coming. What a twisty story!!

As a lover of dark romance I have been giddy with anticipation for Corrupt since I first heard the whispered rumors of a whole new direction for a favorite author of mine, Penelope Douglas. I didn't know what to expect from the book except, of course, complex, intriguing, and compelling characters, a convoluted, anything-but-easy romance with an intense and passionate connection, and a different and absorbing storyline that will hold you captive from the very first page. My expectations may have been a bit high, but it turns out they were well founded as I was far from disappointed.This book consumed me. After an eerie and enigmatic beginning that will have you clamoring to learn more about Michael, reveal more of Erika's past, and delve deeper into the mystery of the masked men, I was altogether unable to stop at just one more page or one last chapter. Corrupt will have you so wrapped up in knots, real life, sleep, and responsibilities are sure to be the furthest things from your mind.If you think Jared Trent's mind games and relentless torture in Bully were something, allow me to introduce you to Michael Crist; a man who knows no bounds, a man willing to play the game no matter the personal cost, a man so determined to be strong and powerful and in control, he bends for no one. Or does he? Michael's cold demeanor, his underlying hatred, and thirst for vengeance was intimidating to say the least and even outright scary at times. It is shocking and exciting with so many twists and turns you may very well walk away not even knowing which way is up. It is everything you have come to expect from a Penelope Douglas book with an edge, a mania, and a fervency like never before. An addiction that lingers in your mind long after you are finished and that can only be satisfied with the revelation of more horsemen.

All I can for sure say is, you REALLY need to read this book! I keep saying this is one of my top 5 reads of 2015, but I honestly think it might have secured the numero uno position! I cannot scream enough about how much I am loving this hot new book from Penelope!Sexy, intriguing, suspenseful and twisted are the first words that come to mind after reading Corrupt. But I felt there was so much more to the story than a dark, sexy romance. It was about finding your voice. Figuring out who you are, and what you want out of life. Grabbing the bull by the horns, owning what you are and not being afraid to embrace the darkness that lies within.Penelope has completely blown me away with her latest book! I love everything she has written and I had set the bar extremely high on my expectations on this novel; but she has surpassed my expectations on every page! I loved Rika and how she evolves as the book goes on from a timid, follow the leader type of girl, to the empowered, dark, take no nonsense woman!Michael. What can I say about Michael, except, where can I find my own? He was over the top, take charge in a sexy, but still kinda scary way, and I LOVED it! I also loved the development of his character from the beginning to the end of the book. Watching him evolve into the man he was always meant to be was extremely rewarding as a reader.As for Kai, Damon and Will, I found them crazy sexy, and I wouldn’t mind seeing more from them in the future! Damon has some serious darkness in him, and I would love to see that explored a little bit, if Penelope chooses to explore these characters a bit more. Kai seemed like the one I would connect with the most. Will, I think still has a lot of secrets.I really, really want to tell you about the steamiest scene in the book, but I refuse to post spoilers. Just read it! Probably my favorite scene in the entire book! (And I loved every single scene in the book, just so you know!)The story line was one that had so many twists and turns, I still wasn’t sure which way was up and which way was down. It takes a lot for me to say a book was unpredictable, but this one certainly had so many twists, turns and detours that even I couldn’t guess what was really going on! There were so many times I had to literally set down my Kindle and go back to it later; not because it couldn’t keep my attention, but because I had to process the total mind F that was unfolding before my eyes before I could continue! Off the charts rating!

Temper is about twin brothers, Auben and Kasim Mtuze. Set in a fictional analogue of southern Africa, they live in a society that is made up of primarily twins. As a coming-of-age ceremony, these twins are assessed and assigned a mixture of the seven vices.Normally, it's common for the twins to split along a three to four ratio. Sometimes, it can be five to two. The Mtuzes are rare in that Auben has six and Kasim only has one.Kasim has embraced his bad-boy lifestyle. He flirts with the girls. Classes are meant to be missed, right? Also, he isn't afraid to supplement his lifestyle with a little bit of theft.But, as the year turns, Auben starts to hear voices. They're pushing him to go beyond petty fun-seeking and move into more serious misdeeds. Also, he's starting to crave the taste of blood.Overall, I really liked Temper quite a bit! This was Nicky Drayden's second effort, and I'm going to add her to my category of "to-read-upon-release."First, I loved that the story was a standalone. There's nothing wrong with a series. But, sometimes, looking at the book store's shelves, I think that the stand alone speculative fiction novel is a lost art. It's nice to find a story that fits into less than four hundred pages.I also liked the social structure of the world. Peoples' social status depended on how many vices they had. Since Auben had six, he wasn't looking at the rosiest of futures. Kasim was looking at the reverse. He expects to climb to a respectable position on the social ladder. Auben, though, can expect to live in a ghetto called a comfy.Also, I liked the idea of a society of twins. There's a very specific world building reason that this happens that I won't get into here. But, in addition to the male/female paradigm, the twin effect has added the kigen gender, which was an interesting thing to think about.The world of the story is going through an intense debate about religion and secularism. The two sides have very strongly drawn boundaries. Also, mechanical devices are verboten, due to cultural exploitation from machine-using conquerors.The Mtuze's mother is strongly secularist, and she's raised her boys to be such as well. When they choose to explore religion as a means of understanding what's happening, she reacts strongly.I love the sense of humor in the story. Auben revels in the funny. His uncle-in-law, Pabio, illustrates not-safe-for-work "childrens" books, such as an octopus with mouth-herpes. There are other examples, too, but some of them give away a bit too much of the story.I was a little less thrilled with the use of language in the book. It's written in the first-person, present tense. No issues with the first-person voice -- I love it in general. It's just a touch jarring to read at first. Whenever I came back to the book, it took a few minutes to get back into the swing of the text.Also, the chapters were really long. It was sometimes hard to find a good stopping point, particularly when I started dozing off in bed. If the chapter subsections had been a bit more clearly labeled, it would have been easier going.Overall, though, those are some minor nitpicks. I highly recommend this for people interested in reading fantasy set in Africa (something sorely lacking at the moment), and also people interested in drama between family members.

Set in a world where virtues and vices are traits split between twins, people are split by class, and where a teenage boy, just coming into his own along with his brother, become gods. Incredible world building here just as in Nicky Draydens previous novel, The Prey of Gods, along with well written characters that I could not help but really fall in love with. It is most definitely a little dark, damn funny and a real joy to read. Kept me guessing right up to the very end. I received an advance ebook for an honest review

Almost all children are born as twins. Each set split the virtues and vices in some way. Those who have more virtues/less vices become the Greater Twin and those with more vices/less virtues become the lesser twin, Once they are slotted as such, their ability to move up in the world is set. Greater twins become CEOs and run cities while lesser twins become middle managers at best.Auben and Kasim are one such set of twins born of a lesser twin mother, therefore, they live in the comfy (poor neighborhood) and attend a private school there paid for by their mother. When they make a discovery that rocks their world and changes their trajectory.I did not see the twist coming and it was AMAZING!!!!Excellent plot development and world building. Wonderful, rich characters.

I was not really a sci-fi/fantasy fan until I read the books by Nicky Drayden. The Prey of the Gods was the first and now Temper. It has a little of everything from a little humor, terror and most of all the bond and emotional connection of the twin brothers. I definitely would recommend this one.

Temper reveals a brilliant world filled with magic, both good and evil, that paints a vivid portrait of a deeply flawed society. Drayden’s use of class structure examines the struggles of the real world and the implications of poverty on a child’s future. Complete with an epic clash between religion and science, and a fast-paced narrative, Temper is a must read.

This has a superhero feel with a little more depth. Not normally a genre I read, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Enjoyed writing style, original story line and subtle humor. Also listened to audio book which was great. Will read a third time because it required me more than one reading to understand some key points, especially the social commentary.

The strategies provided and the stories used to illustrate points are not necessarily (by necessity) faith driven, and even if they are, I am pleased to say non-Christians will feel welcome and will be able to take the lessons to heart. People who do real heart work to heal communities and create transformation will feel affirmed while picking up new nuance and perhaps even additional skills & tactics. After beginning this (expensive) hobby this past winter, I found it painful to work my way through all the details. Despite the many forums available, there is, in my opinion, very little guidance that is structured. To make matters worse, and quite frustrating (and not just for "newbies") there is a plethora of very poorly written manuals by telescope, mount, and other accessory vendors. You would think that after spending a couple thousand bucks, you'd be able to read a decent manual. The forum sites are full of queries and topics because of this sore lack of useful structured introductory manual information.But if you get the bug, there's no going back and you just learn to deal with the very disorganized information you find. There is ultimately no better teacher than experience (i.e. trial and error). Hopefully you won't break anything along the way! My information breakthrough for me came on visiting Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. The biggest treat was seeing Orion's sword -- the clearest I've ever seen including nebulosity directly without any scope-- but they also carry an excellent selection of books for beginner thru advanced astronomers. I first came upon the Firefly series there. Highly recommended for Newbies! Finally- structured direction including learning the night sky!The "best" astrophotography books out there include MAKING EVERY PHOTON COUNT (Steve Richards), Allan Hall's LONG EXPOSURE ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY, and ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY (Thierry Legault). The COMPLETE GUIDE TO STARGAZING by Robin Scagell (and the smaller Firefly binocular and telescope series are perfect for commuting) is a more general encyclopedic overview of astronomy that's well illustrated and written. The available books are not ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY for dummies books. All of them can be quite dense, even when covering topics in a general sense. They all give a necessary overview that is indispensable, and more fruitful than scattered forum bites for me. Legault's book is the outstanding technical primer but doesn't really cover image processing specifics and the others which do deal mainly with PC ASCOM, the powerful Maxim DL software package, and Photoshop when they venture into processing specifics. The vendor Starizona has a series of online tutorials on image processing which are Photoshop oriented which I found quite informative.I think Chris Woodhouse's new entry is the most modern entry. He covers hardware and accessories as well if not better than the others, and has included an entire section on Image Processing that, unlike previous books, focuses on PixInsight. Very little structured PixInsight teaching material is available despite the many video tutorials that can be found online. There's a dedicated Patrick Moore series volume due out by Warren Keller. Ultimately there are two groups it seems, the "haters" and the "lovers". The best online tutorial resource is Kayron Mercieca's Light Vortex Astronomy as well as the PixInsight website material (ADDENDUM: I forgot to mention Harry's ASTROSHED!). The PixInsight material in this volume is the best available right now in book form, and frankly sets the standard. It places the wealth of video online tutorial material I've gone through in context.The editing quibbles mentioned in a separate post are not horrible and I believe this book will only get better on future editions.Kudos to Mr Woodhouse and thanks for sharing!

This is a very good book which I would characterize as a survey aimed at the advanced level. In a nutshell, it is an Astrophotography book for those who already are accomplished astrophotographers! The author is well versed in advanced topics such as plate solving, remote control of the telescope, PixInsight post processing software, and the modeling characteristics of high end mounts such as Software Bisque’s Paramount and 10Micron’s GM1000 HPS.The content of the book is augmented by useful tables and charts. Early on there is an Astronomy Primer, and the nice aspect of it is that it is written from the perspective of astrophotography. The heart of the author is clearly with the deep sky, however. Imaging of planets does not seem to hold his interest, but for completeness, he does include an example of imaging Jupiter among the seven worked out “First Light Assignments” at the end of the book. However, the word planet does not even appear in the book’s index. The few sentences describing planetary imaging in the book are also covered in the aforementioned Jupiter First Light Assignment. Even a picture, Figure 28 on page 110, is duplicated in the Jupiter assignment (and larger to boot) as Figure 2 on page 244. By the way, this is not the only figure that is duplicated in the book. The FocusMax dialog box screen shot, Figure 10 on page 47, is also shown as Figure 2 on page 127.Nits aside, I learned a lot from this book. There is a great amount of useful information on all aspects of astrophotography, from mounts, to optics, to cameras (both DSLRs and CCDs), filters, focusers, field flatteners, mount calibration, autoguiding, control software, and of course, post processing software and techniques.However, no book is going to turn you into an accomplished astrophotographer, just as no book will transform you into a competent pilot or surgeon. It takes practice. And although there is an extensive table in the Appendixes on Diagnostics and Problem Solving, you are probably going to have to follow the path the author took to become accomplished in the field - practice, and go to the forums to get help.It is a very expensive book. The hardcover version costs close to $150, and the paperback version, $50. Yet some of the charts, pictures and tables are printed small and therefore hard to read. On the other hand, the physical execution is excellent. The quality of the materials, the printing and the images, at least in the hardcover edition (I have not seen the soft cover edition), is excellent. The Kindle edition is just as nice (some people complain that other books do not fare well when brought over to Kindle). The only disappointment is that there is no way to enlarge the too small figures or tables even on a large 27 inch Macintosh monitor. This is not an issue with Kindle - as I mentioned earlier, these figures and tables are also too small in the print edition.I deducted one star from my rating because of the number of editing issues in the book. Given the quality of content and execution, and the price point, I had hoped the writing would also be top notch. Perhaps the author should have availed himself of an Editor. Maybe it is churlish of me to criticize typos, but they do distract from the reading of the book. I will not list every instance of a typo, but in just a few pages I found the following (hard cover and Kindle editions):Page 93: “,like DeeepSkyStacker that calibrates, aligns and stack exposures.”(should be “,like DeeepSkyStacker that calibrates, aligns and stacks exposures.”)Page 93: “One reason is that many editing functions are limited to 16-bit processing and the initial severe manipulations required in astrophotography are more effective in a 32 bit.”(perhaps the sentence should end “are more effective in 32 bits.”)Page 95: A fork-mounted telescope needs to be accurately leveled and aligned with true north.(not true for all fork mounted telescopes - this is a quote from the Celestron CPC manual: “Remember SkyAlign does not care where the optical tube is pointed at the beginning of the alignment. So to make the alignment process even faster it is acceptable to move the telescope to the first alignment star manually by loosening both clutches.” All current Celestron fork-mounted telescopes use the SkyAlign procedure, so none of them need to be aligned to true north)Page 96: “Some use a method that compare the position of two or …”(should be compares.)Page 100: “Rotate the dovetail plate so that it horizontal and open up the jaws,”(should be “Rotate the dovetail plate so that it is horizontal and open up the jaws,”I checked the book’s Errata at [...] on March 31, 2016, the date I wrote this review. The Errata page was blank.In summary, this is an excellent but advanced book, and you should probably not let yourself get too annoyed by the lack of editing.If you are not quite ready to dive into the deep end of the pool, you could consider “Astrophotography” by Thierry Legault, and “The Deep-Sky Imaging Primer” by Charles Bracken. Both are available on Amazon, and the first one is also available on Kindle. Both are excellent - you can read the reviews. I will just mention that “Astrophotography” starts out with a simple chapter of photographing the sky without a telescope, and “The Deep-Sky Imaging Primer” does not cover planetary photography; its subject matter is, as the title implies, deep sky objects.

I'm very impressed with this book. I've read about a third of it so far. It is pleasant to read and is easily understood, goes into enough depth that I find it useful even after 2 years of astrophotography.

Good information! It augmented and affirmed what I was filtering out from many online sources ... too bad I didn't start with this book! I wish there was more dedicated coverage of solar system imaging (i.e. planets, moon, sun). It wasn't that it was absent, I just don't feel there was as much attention as DSO, and about the significant differences in the equipment and processes between the two.

Gives a great look at the overall process and points out the pitfalls. It provides some great resolutions to problems you wouldn't think are problems but are. Defines some of the terminology usually gained thru tribal knowledge. Written by an engineer in plain language that is easy to understand. This is a great addition to you PixInsight library.

This is one of the best novels I've ever read. The suspense was excruciating. Several plots meshed and pulled me through varied scenarios until I was literally drained. I could not put the book down for long until I had to begin reading again.The climax was brilliant and left me enthralled with the ability of this writer to capture an audience, actually grab the reader in a firm grip and not release until the reader was completely exhausted. As a long time lover of Forsyth's novels, I wonder if Bernal will take his place. Looking forward to his next book

Even if you get past all the typos and grammatical errors, there is nothing wonderful about this book. The plot is seriously flawed, and pretty much unbelievable. Author is living in fantasy land. James Patterson should be ashamed to have his name associated with this mess.

Extreamly helpfull and inexpensive. Great review of twelve Lead ekg it definitely helped me get it down and if you buy the book on Kindle it's super cheap with the added bonus of saving the environment buy not buying the physical book.

I bought this book to brush up on my EKG knowledge before a medical mission trip. The book does give the basics of EKG's as far as content, but it was printed upside down and backwards (to pages read right to left), so not a quality book.
